webstradamus: How exactly do you mean by that? These are 2 different scales we're talking about here. Are you trying to say if one has a GPA of X/5.0, WES would always evaluate it to some Y > X?
We have two variables...X and Y.

The only constant(K) is Naija 5.0 and US/WES 4.0 scales.

If varaible X falls within 2.4 - 2.7 , be sure that Y>X.

Where Y is the WES final CGPA. This is from experience with WES.

This doesn't also mean that Y will be greater than 4.0 if X = 1st Class.

bigfrancis21: In my school, 2.2 starts from 2.40 to 3.49. Though, it wasn't like that when I entered. It was revised recently like 1 or 2 years ago. Was surprised when I even found out. UNN released a second batch list recently. Some of my friends from my class who didn't make it with the first batch had their names on this second batch list. I checked for a friend through somebody and he made 2.42 and I assumed he made 3rd class. Rang him and told him he made 3rd class. It was a shocker for this my friend because he really struggled in school hoping to make 2.2. Only for him to travel to Nsukka from his base, Enugu, the next day to check the list and found his name under 2.2 list! Miracle! He was so overjoyed. Of course, you can imagine his joy. smiley

So yes, 2.2 degree now starts from 2.40 to 3.49. Its a recent development though.
GBAM!!!

webstradamus: Why are you so sure about that?
I am sure because with a Naija 2.2, Your WES CGPA can't be less than 2.50. I have seen more than 6 WES evaluated transcriptS of folks with Naija CGPA between 2.3 and 2.5.

Second, WES does not reduce CGPAs, instead it increases. What do you think would happen to a CGPA of 2.40 when converted?

Don't mind me, I was just kidding there... grin grin grin
Lol....that's funny. Well, the point is that SmithJanet's cousin WES evaluated GPA will not be less than 2.50.

It varies,look at these,

iamchux: Hey dear, I guess you are a bit wrong there....Got this from www.wes.org
She is not totally wrong. Some schools such as OAU Ife second class lower starts from 2.5. Schools like Lautech and Adekunle Ajasin University recognises 2.4 as a second class lower.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part4 by OjaP: 10:32pm On Aug 04, 2013

I think it varies from school to school.

OjaP: His uncle is just 0.5 away from Naija Second class lower. All he needs to do is convert his transcript through WES. He will make 2.5 on a US scale of 4.0, especially if he has good grades in his last 60 semester units.
2.4 CGPA is actually a 2.2 - A very good female friend here just corrected me. grin

With this at the back of WES's mind, his brother may end up with a CGPA of even 2.6 on a scale of US 4.0.

webstradamus: The uncle had a 2.4/5.0. I believe that's somewhere around 1.9-2.0/4.0 or maybe less. The case is bad for grad school acceptance.

Good GRE + Strongly worded SOP + Strong recommendation letters + Research interests should augment his chances. Be warned that your uncle may not get any form of funding from the schools. Check out for schools that require a minimum 2.5 GPA for a MS in Mathematics. That should work.

You will get your money. All you need is to call or email them and ask for your refund when school starts. It is your money, your account and none of their business where the money came from. Expect your refund check in the mail. Hope they have your US address on file?

Something is definitely not working for you. I would re-write the TOEFL, change my school to a better one and visit the embassy again. If this do not work, then work on MS later in life just like Imperiouxx advised.

You sound so desperate. Take it easy bro and you will be fine.

foohard: Not sure though.. Just my thought along the statement in the terms and conditions.. If so, I still dont have problems, would have gotten my green card before i finish my masters and my job is still waiting here as i am going on a study leave pay for 2 years... So, can easy come and invest in Naija for 3 years and go back to USA if i wish...
@ bolded : You get mouth sir. If you can get a high paying job, you can pay them back the money...shouldn't be a biggie.

If I were you, I would defer my admission by a semester so you don't spend that much on school. This way, your number will be in line for Adjustment of Status to green card through marriage since your wife started the process already. This shouldn't take more than 3-5 months. You get your 1year work permit within 30-60days. This will allow you to work.

I would then demand a refund of the remaining money from my school since I will be paying in state. The refund will then be put into good use by investing. So many ways to go about this. Plan well bro.

Good luck!!

All they stated was to return to naija to work for 3 years which is not difficult for me cos I dont plan to die in the USA.. All I need is gather enough knowledge in USA through schooling and working as long as I wish and return to Nigeria to be a director at a very good agency like NITDA and serve for as long as I can which would surely be more than three years
Are you sure of this? Most people who get similar scholarships are always told to come back and work immediately after schooling, usually for 2 years. The only exception is if you are willing to pay back whatever amount they spent on you with interest. This may be different for NITDA sha.

vivysparkles: House, and those currently in the US, can I carry gala from naija, will the customs nd immigration people in Yankee allow it? And indomie too as I hear the noodles in Yankee is different an not so loved by nigerians.
I flew Virgin Atlantic few weeks ago. I had some "kilishi" in my hand luggage and plenty of it in one of my checked in bags. I had no problem with the Custom officials both in the UK and the US, and Naija. I even spent a night in the UK to go see my friend and checked in my hand luggage again the following morning. Those machines don't pay too much attention to food-stuffs. I think what they are most concerned about is "cokes".

Some people are not so lucky though. The machine detects the food sometimes. Na like baba Ijebu...try your luck. I would say go with whatever you want to carry. Patapata they seize it.

GboyegaD: No, but remember that students are paid from the research grants of their professors thus, if a professor chooses to pay the student's tuition from his grant, the school can't stop that.
Exactly my point. BigFrancis, that the state sets a rule doesn't mean you still can't get full waiver. You may have missed these good Texas schools because you didn't talk to the profs if you can get a grant.

Overall, the rule doesn't apply in most cases because the profs/dept. are the ones who pay most times and not the graduate school.

Thanks for clarifying Gboyega.
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part4 by OjaP: 4:48pm On Aug 01, 2013
GboyegaD: Like I said earlier, the tuition fee thing is dependent on your research professor however, by rule, they only waive out of state tuition and if your professor wants, he could get you a full tuition waiver.
Thanks GboyegaD. I can fully understand now.

But wait oo. Can we say the Profs are breaking the rule? In that case, it becomes no rule or law.gringrin
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part4 by OjaP: 4:14pm On Aug 01, 2013
@ BigFrancis and Gboyega

I have talked to Geology Professors in many of the TX universities in the past. The only thing common with what they all said was free tuition + RA/GA which benefits come in form of a monthly stipend. They said I won't have to pay a dime if given admission. Same thing goes for MS candidates. Only UT El Paso told me I will have to pay in-state while they offered a RA.

I am still surprised about this 50% law as I know many geologists who got in to those schools without paying a dime. Most of the Geology departments have substantial endowments, foundations and grants from government agencies and oil companies. This is where they get the millions used in bank rolling this from. If the fund is from NSF, they want to make sure they spend all the money before the expiration of the grant else it goes back to NSF. So, they freely offer you free tuition and the rest. Or is it that departments of geology in these schools simply do not follow the 50% rule?
TravelRe: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part4 by OjaP: 6:32am On Aug 01, 2013
bigfrancis21: If obtaining graduate assistantship plus full tuition waiver is your priority, then know that UT Austin, Texas Tech and all schools in Texas give only 50% tuition waiver if given scholarship or GA. They don't give 100% tuition waiver. Its a general state of texas law. Just be aware.

UT Austin is a terrific school. If I were you, I'd go for it.
Is this true for a MS or PhD in Geology at Rice, UofH, UT Austin and TAMU? Just curious.

I understand UT El Paso Geology dept. lets you pay in state + GA though. And this is because the department does not have a lot of funds.

@ the guy that is schooling in Ghana.

Ivy League schools are good but doesn't translate to automatic job especially for an int'l student. If in doubt, attend the next SPE conference and you will be amazed by the thousands of Ivy league graduates looking for jobs.

Advice: Whichever school you attend, make sure you get good grades and don't be a LEARNER in the US. I rest my case.

I really need advise 4rm all nairalanders I applied for F-1 visa early this year and I was been denied 3times around jan-feb now I'm planning to apply again with d same school kindly advise me on what to do
I am a graduate of Business Information System 4rm mdx uni uk want to study management info system @coleman university in CA .pls kindly advise me
I am so sure Coleman did not ask you for a GRE before they begged you with their admission. Please, don't go to the embassy with that school admission again.

I will advice you to write the GRE, find a better school, and go to the embassy again. If you graduated from Middlesex with a Distinction or Merit, then apply to any of the UC's, Stanford, Caltech OR any of the CSU's if you want a cheaper tuition (this is if you really want to come to CA).

Good luck.

Walspring: I8 years old, Well i dressed coperate with a tie but no suit, Can you just send me list of great schools you know i can apply to or the UC's.. Thanks so much
WtF!!! Who is telling you that your school is not too good? YES, the CSU system may not be highly rated as the UC's but I can tell you that they are also good. I can name 10 NL'ers including my very self who presented CSU I-20 at the embassy and got their VISAS.

CSU Bakersfield used to be the only university in the West offering MS Petroleum Geology. Only recently did CSU Long Beach started offering it. Even the so called UC's still don't offer it as a course. Many people I know including myself got a job with a CSU diploma. So?

You said they asked you if you will be taking any exams when you get to the school. Your response wasn't so good enough. I don't think it is proper to tell the V.O that the answer to that is in your admission letter. You should know it off hand and start telling them the exams you will take and what will happen after you take the exams. That will show that you really know what you are going there to do. Last time I checked, freshers take some English Placement or Mathematics exam, I am not sure if that is what the V.O wants to hear. If you took the SAT, I don't think that should even come up at all because you would just tell them you already took the SAT and TOEFL and won't be any need for that. And if you are still considering any of the UC's, you better be ready to have a perfect SAT score because they are so picky and highly competitive. On top of this is that, it is *effing expensive for Int'l students.

Fresno state which you applied to is a good school. You tried your best at the interview, don't blame it on school or whoever you gave your prayer quotes. Today isn't just your day. Go back and reapply.

Best of luck.
CareerRe: What Course Should I Choose For Masters As A Geology Graduate.. by OjaP: 3:55am On Jul 27, 2013
Emmy,

Please don't feel discouraged. Go ahead and plan towards working on your Masters in Petroleum Geology or Sedimentology. If you like Physics, you can do Geophysics.

I will only advise you to try as much as possible to do this in the US. You will get some good geology schools who will give you a scholarship with your 2:1. This comes usually in the form of free tuition and monthly stipend.

I wish you all the best.
