Seunolumonday,

Sorry to hear about your denial. I have been waiting for long to hear the good news. Anyways, you already know what the problem is. And just as gurus here advised, please defer the admission and go back to the embassy again. You have a good heart and someone like you deserves the best.

The VISA is yours.

Ms Nas: As you said....it has a clause.
It says on the website that "Students are not eligible for on-campus employment in their first semester, unless they have written approval from the Department Chair, Director, or their Advisor, stating they need the job". Convincing your advisor you need a job isn't a hard thing to do. My advisor got me my job undecided

Lol...Web is correct. I have been researching ways of legally changing a status from F1 to GC ever since I stepped into this country. Adjustment through marriage is just one of them and the most common. I have friends who passed through that route and are happily married today with their wives. I learned a lot from these guys. And for me, I thank God for where I am today. Only HIM deserve all the praises.

shynepapin101: His wife should know better, moreso, all that is needed is provided online, Google has been my best friend.

I'm nt sure about this, though; it might depend on the state but I know it's their investigation that matters, even if you ain't followed, you could be watched, depending on your present status.

Last time I checked, all happened there not to me though but my brother, change of status took him 3 months, but got his gc took 6 months to authenticate. According to him all payment totalled $4k5, despite everything being real, there's eyes everywhere.
- His wife may not know better. You will be surprised that many people in the US don't even know anything about visa or how to help friends or families with visa parole. How would the wife even know better when she is not an immigration lawyer?

- Since you are not sure on your second point, I won't hold you on it. But for record purpose, Biometrics + Form I-485 cost a total of $1070. The poster already have a form I-130 (costs $420) that has been approved. This summed together is less than $1500. The only thing he would be paying for aside I-485 is medical examination which in most cases is between $200-$500 depending on the surgeon. Assuming a medical examination of even $1k (not even possible), the poster would still be spending less than $2500. You should ask your brother how he got to pay $4k5. Well, maybe he paid a lawyer, I can't rule that out. Again, if you will file yourself without a lawyer, you will never spend up to $4k5.

- What do you mean by change of status and GC? Your status can only change when your application is approved, when you pass the interview. And like I said earlier, this usually happen within 2-6months of filing. I have seen people get it in 2months. You should get your green card in the mail within 2-3weeks after you have been approved. I don't understand what you meant by change of status and authenticating. Please explain better.

- Lastly, we are all watched in the US if you don't know and not only people adjusting status. Although, they conduct a background check on these sets of people but why would you care about who is watching you or even investigating if your marriage is genuine? More reason why I said the poster's case is straight forward and doesn't need a lawyer. He only needs to file properly and go for interview.

Let's always get our facts right before coming here to confuse people please.

foohard: Hello house,

Quite a long time. Trying to understand the system. Wish you all NL members the best.

Does anyone know the process of changing to permanent resident from an F1 VISA, the cost and how long it takes to get the green card. My wife filed I-130 for me in march and was approved in August 2013, before I travelled with an F1 VISA.

Thank you all as I await your response.

Again, wish you all the best.
Now, you need to file forms I-485 (Application to adjust status), I-1765 (Application for employment eligibility) and if you want to travel in between, form I-131 (Advanced parole). When submitting these, do not forget to include form I-797(Notice of action that your I-130 was approved).

You shouldn't spend more than $2k to file. This includes payment to a surgeon for the compulsory medical examinations. I would advise you not to use a lawyer since your case is straight forward. All supporting documents needed to proof legit marriage can be found on the USCIS website.

All things being equal, you should expect to be a LPR between 3-6 months of filing. All the best.

TravelRe: You want to COME TO AMERICA - Do You REALLY Know America? by OjaP: 11:56pm On Oct 04, 2013
You all have spoken well. I have learned one or two things from both sides. However, I would say someone who is educated here with a work permit will do well no matter what. If I am not mistaken, many Nigerians who come here for advanced degrees do well after their education. If any one is in doubt, please visit NL USA Student Visa thread. To some extent, I would say plan before coming to America, a Nigerian coming here for school will never regret his/her decision no matter what. For others who fall in other categories, I don't know.

BTW, is Seun Osewa second handle Nobody ? That username is unique and I still can't open the person's profile. Is that person enjoying a special privilege from NL? Only Seun would enjoy that probably.
PoliticsRe: Nigeria At 53 - What Has Been Your Story So Far? by OjaP:
Though we are not there yet. But with prayers, hard-work and sincerity on the part of our leaders, we will surely get to the promised land.
Nigeria is so difficult to rule due to the diversity in culture, language and religion. So, it may take more than we expect for us to fully become a developed nation.

We are always in the habit of running the government or the folks at the helms of affairs down each time we have the opportunity, this is not so good. While it is good to criticize, let us also make it a habit to do it constructively. Whether you are a Christian, a Muslim or even a traditionalist, let us all make it a duty to remember the nation called Nigeria in our prayers whenever we call on God or Allah. God can give us incorruptible leaders who will turn every thing around for us. How many times in our lives have we all said "God bless Nigeria"? All we do is speak negative of the country not knowing that prayers can move mountains. I know that one day, very soon, we will get there.

I wish my dear country a happy independence day. All roads lead to Houston, Texas this weekend to celebrate. Happy 53rd Naija.

flynbird: Huh? undecided Does this mean If I can't get a job then I can't apply for the SSN, and without the SSN I can't get a drivers licensehuh? Or what does OjaP mean by DL in his reply? Does DL mean drivers license? Me I'm still a JJC/ novice here oh! Please enlighten me Sir's. smiley
You don't need a SSN to obtain a driver's license. Your SS card will only make it easier as I explained earlier. With your SS card, you won't have to show so much docs such as visa page, I-20, debit card etc. (as the case may be). Each of the docs you show are assigned certain "points". If you earn the minimum points to obtain, then you are good to go. If not, they ask you for more to meet up.

See Olawale's post above.

flynbird: Been so busy with studies and settling down here. What's the importance of SSN? Do we need it as studentshuh?
Not compulsory but necessary. Some of the benefits include but not limited to the following:

- Allows you apply for credit cards.

- Buy things on credit.

- Helping in getting a DL or state issued ID with ease without going through points counting as obtained in some states.

Some jobs also require you to fill in your SSN when applying for jobs. These are just some of its benefits.

An American that choose to go for a PhD will certainly be seen as a good seed by their government. Why won't he be accepted easily by many schools when the Indians and other int'l students dominate the grad schools. School ranking matters when it comes to PhD (being the highest level of education), this is the reason why I must get that Harvard admission by fire, by force..... Syenite: Just as you rightly said, you are putting the cart before the horse.
First thing first, make sure you graduate with a good grade (minimum of 2.1).
I am a geologist in the Oil and Gas Sector and must confess that it is one of the most rewarding Oil and Gas careers.
Attempt at getting a Job with ur 1st Degree. Your company's operations and ur job function will help show u a path-way.

I had a B.Sc in Geology and M.Sc in Petroleum Economics though I currently work as a Geophysicist.
I would like to connect with you. How best can I contact you?

damaris k: Identify the various aspect Q̸̮̮̃f geology n choose the one dat best fits ur interest n go 4 it in ur masters. All aspects are relevant in the oil industry but one thing remains dat U̶̲̥̅̊ must make a 2.1 in ur first degree.

Anyways, I dragged myself to the Prometric centre, head pounding, eye throbbing.
I must say, I feel like giving Syahboy a punch in the gut for making the Quantitative section seem so easy- That stuff is trickier than ingesting 'ogbono' with chopsticks.
At a point, I started misreading on the Verbal section. I got stuck for like 3 minutes pondering over a word that looked like 'altristic'. Alas, it was 'artistic'.
In all, I thank God. His name really is a. Stron tower. I managed to score 158 in the Quantitative Section and 164 in the Verbal Section.
I would like the gurus to suggest schools that could match this profile. I'm looking at a PhD in Biology. I should also add that I had an Undergraduate GPA of 4.60 on a scale of 5.
Thanks in advance...
With that kind of CGPA and GRE scores, I would apply to the following Unis.

John Hopkins
Harvard
Stanford
UC Berkely or Davis
Yale
Penn State

After picking 4 schools from the above, I would then pick 3 other safety schools in case. I wouldn't settle for less.

Congrats!!
