This is an app I always in mind to develop or partner with a microfinance bank. Very good for people who don't like repaying loans. I hope the person loaning out does not have to give out his bvn, only the person who is repaying leaves his BVN. suoaz: Originally published on medium.com/middletrust
My name is Tunde, a medical doctor at a Nigerian teaching hospital (don’t ask me which). A couple of weeks ago, my colleague Chris came up to me, it was month-end and salaries just rolled in and we were all high on alerts and very happy as though a cure for the COVID-19 had been found. “Tunde, help your boy, my rent go expire this month-end and my car just develop fault, salary wen dem just pay, I wan use am settle the rent but I just need small extra cash to fix my car. You fit give me small loan? Na small money, e no reach you do, I go pay back when salary come next month” he said. “I am not lending you anything! I don’t trust you and everyone knows you are crafty. I don’t have a car myself or you think I like walking in the sun? You are not my boy, we are just colleagues” I thought. If only he could read my mind, he would have strangled me with his stethoscope. By the way, I have a problem, I am too nice. I think I got this habit from my mum, we both have a problem saying No to others. I looked at him while he awaited my response, I wanted to say no but a small voice in mind said “maybe he has changed” as if a leopard could ever change its spots. No problem, how much” I stuttered. Just ₦50,000” he quickly replied. "₦50,000 is not a small amount but no problem, please I will need it back by month-end oh” I said. You no trust me? No worry, this one no be FG when promise palliative” he said with a smile. Of course, dude, I don’t trust you” I thought. As he turned around to walk away, Middletrust came to mind (It is an online escrow company I had used for the first time the previous week to make payment for a phone I bought from an online store, the seller even seemed less crafty than Chris. Middletrust acted as a middleman to ensure I got what I paid for before sending the seller his money.) Yes, I need to use this service again. “Chris, I will send the money to you using Middletrust” I said. “Which one be middletrunk?” He asked. “Middletrust not middletrunk. Visit middletrust.com, if you have questions, text me on WhatsApp” I added. “Afterall, these patients waiting are not going to see themselves.” Again I said this in my mind. That evening, I texted Chris to sign up on Middletrust, then I created a loan transaction and Middletrust sent him a notification. In summary, when he realized that on the due date for the loan repayment, ₦50,000 would be debited from his Middletrust account and if unavailable, would be automatically debited from his bank account, Chris called me and said Tunde, no worry, I no need the level again. I jumped like I just won a trophy, so he had no intention of paying back. Thirty minutes later, he called back and said he needed it after all. “So I just celebrated like Arsenal won the Champions League for nothing! Am I a joke to you?” I thought. Anyways, he accepted the transaction, and the money was transferred from my account to Chris via Middletrust. Fast forward to a month later, it was month-end and we were awaiting our salaries or waiting for it to rain, as we liked to call it. Just about that time, Chris stopped replying to my "Good Morning" greetings, he continuously frowned at me and avoided me like he just found out I was COVID-19 positive. No doubt, he was using the fact that I refused to cover a shift for him at work as an excuse to keep me silent and not pay me back my money. I tried talking to him whenever we saw but he always claimed to be busy. At last, the date for repayment came and nothing happened, he didn’t have the money in his Middletrust account or bank account, I assumed. On a Friday afternoon, I was seated at the doctor’s lounge when it began to rain, with the alerts rolling in. Everyone was smiling. I quickly scanned the room to find a frowning face staring at his phone like he just credited someone with ₦200,000 instead of ₦2,000. Then, my phone buzzed, I checked my inbox and saw a message “₦50,000 has just been credited to your Middletrust account as loan repayment.” I looked up and Chris was staring at me, I raised both hands and with a smile from ear to ear, I shouted, “Baba, your boy loyal oo!!”

One way of learning how to handle failures is to be involved in sports. I remember playing table tennis, football, volleyball, basketball, track and field. In all of those games, they will be days you will lose and days you will win. On the days you loose, your friends could mock you which could motivate to try harder next time so as to be able to win. It is in games like that that you know that some people will naturally be better than you in some things and you better than others. One needs to have a balance of things in life in order to handle bad times. Sholapey: To all parents
There was a very brilliant boy, he always scored 100% in Science. Got Selected for IIT Madras and scored excellent in IIT. Went to the University of California for MBA. Got a high paying job in America and settled there. Married a Beautiful Tamil Girl. Bought a 5 room big house and luxury cars. He had everything that make him successful but a few years ago he committed suicide after shooting his wife and children.
*WHAT WENT WRONG?*
California Institute of Clinical Psychology Studied his case and found “what went wrong?”
The researcher met the boy's friends and family and found that he lost his job due to America’s economic crisis and he had to sit without a job for a long time. After even reducing his previous salary amount, he didn't get any job. Then his house installment broke and he and his family lost the home. they survived a few months with less money and then he and his wife together decided to commit suicide. He first shot his wife and children and then shot himself.
The case concluded that the man was Programmed for success but he was not trained for handling failures.
Now let's come to the actual question, What are the habits of highly successful people?
First of all, there are many people who will tell you about success habits but today I want to tell you that even if you have achieved everything, yet there is a chance to lose everything, nobody knows when the next economic crisis will hit the world. The best success habit according to me is getting trained for handling failures.
I also request every parent, please not only program your child to be successful but teach them how to handle failures and also teach them proper lessons about life. Learning high-level science and maths will help them to clear competitive exams but a knowledge about life will help them to face every problem. Teach them about how money works instead of teaching them to work for money. Help them in finding their passion because these degrees will not help them in the next economic crisis and we don’t know when the next crisis will hit the world..

If you read my comment again, you will find we are very much aligned. afroxyz: Nobody is disputing what you are saying. Some pages back, there was mention of a woman who connived with her pastor to kill her husband who was a staff of NNPC. I'm sure the man had the same thoughts as you outlined above. Just the way nobody wishes death on himself, you also have to prepare for it. But I still ask, if the coin is flipped who would the woman state as the beneficiary? |

So far the argument has been men making a will, no discussion about women making Will's also or is there a law against that. Men always thinking when they die, women always thinking when they enjoy. Each entity is granted his thoughts. Statistics shows that it happens exactly like that. Whether or not you write a will, always have a positive outlook about life. Spend time with your kids. Never accept that your wife make request to you on behalf of your kids, you are not a blood sucking demon they cannot approach. Encourage them to talk directly to you also otherwise in old age, you will become a lonely man who was never there. Fatherhood is more than just an ATM pin. If you make it all about what you provide, the kids will be distant from you and have no relationship with you as soon as they can meet their own needs. afroxyz: The problem is not with the woman remarrying. The problem is the type of man that she marries who may deprive his children from his wealth. Besides if it was the other way round, would the woman name the husband as a beneficiary? Emotions kill business |

Oga is it star, guilder, malt, fanta or bottled water you want, please take two bottles. Ubde come pay. DigitalMallam: Good for you and stick with that practice. The fact that it works for you doesn't mean it will work for all. As human beings we are wired differently and can never act or behave same way. There's no such thing as one size fit all behaviourally in marriage. As we advance in marriage, we grow and learn more of each other. For me, I will never keep a joint with my wife. That's my style and the way I want to live with my wife. Neither have I request to know how much she has in her account. I've seen and witnessed what those who keep joint accounts do to cook thier books in other to conceal vital information from the other half. Some hide 50% of their salary in VSS and Coop deductions, print an entirely different payslip & emoluments letter to take home. A woman once beg me to issue a dummy letter stating that her official/status car must be seen or driven daily to work. I asked why, she said her husband has hijacked the car from her which she doesn't like because they do share common acct. Perhaps the practice was working for them at the early stage of the union, but destiny and luck differs. Along the line the woman became a high flier and way above the husband.
Marriage is about trust trully, but trust alone is not enough, understanding of each other, perseverance and ability to let go of your ego need to complement the trust. And more importantly financial strength. In the case of death, both should have a will. I can't allow my wife to inherit my estate alone when I'm long gone. What if I die early, she can still go and marry another man, what happens to my siblings and parents? |

Those are the extreme macho men. emmanuelewumi: He should set up a business for her, but some men are afraid the wife's business can become so big.
An electrician set up a bukateria for his wife, the woman made good morning from this business. And wanted to assist the man with the house rent, school fees and other domestic expenses, but the husband refused. He is the sole provider and will not accept any assistance from his wife
They were living at Ajegunle, the woman used her excess funds to buy a plot of land at Iyana Iba and started building a bungalow of two flats . Which was completed in five years.
Meanwhile the husband the sole provider does not have a house in Lagos.
It got to a time when their house at Ajegunle was sold and the family had to relocate to another part of Lagos
Do you know that the man paid house rent for 2 years before he got to know that his wife was his landlady . |

Except this case is exactly like that but some men when they reach a certain social status feel it is belittling for their wives to be under some form of employment. Some see it as a way of protecting their investment. A man that can pay a wife and income 1.8m per annum is not a poor man, what business can the woman do that she would quickly be able to be ahead of the man when she does not have the experience. Some men also feel that their homefront should not be abandoned by both father and mother. emmanuelewumi:

This your story. It's the reason why men sometimes act the way they do. First, in credit to woman, she has a good savings culture after all she didn't waste the money. Since she asked for investment advise and not marriage counseling, you gave her the very best advice. However, she just lost an opportunity to earn the complete trust of her husband. If she has presented her husband with that 5 million and told him that she has been saving it from the 150 for the family, I can almost swear that oga will increase the amount to 200k per month and brag to all and sundry that he has a very good wife. I think she missed an opportunity. Women and secrets Sha. I fear people that don't fear them. emmanuelewumi: author=Theconglomerate post=89333528]People that can't trust their wives usually feels so because they make zero income and probably came from a place that could use a lot of help,in other words make them no use their money take solve family problems of their in laws.. That is why it is always good to be on a certain social strata before getting married, not just to raise a comfortable family but also increases one's reach in the kind of families he will pick a wife from. No be that kind family weh you go Marry wife and you hear say them don roof house weh their late father abandon 25 years ago just after you marry her, instead of you to be happy for them, you go start to wonder why it happened immediately after you marry their daughter. "Could it be coincidence?"you will ask yourself Or did I just marry a BIG FAT FÙCKING RAT that I will be stocked with for the rest of my life Immediately your hair will start falling off in your early thirties due to over thinking and the inevitable financial mishap that awaits you. One will stop eating, start daydreaming, losing focus and start exhibiting symptoms of poverty even before it starts and then the shocking news will come Guess what it is; The mother in law that had 2 lazy grown up sons and semi frustrated daughters that could barely fix their leaking roof for 7 years just took delivery of a new SUV and now wear only gold necklace and now tie hollandis wrapper to sit at home. And then yours truly, the angel God personally sent to rescue a generation out of poverty will pay a visit one day to them, stays dumbfounded, goes back home with his wife and die of heart attack leaving behind all what he has toiled for,for a people he don't know.. I will be the last person to date or marry a poor woman This story is very generic and refers to no one in particular, take it to heart at your own risk cos I won't bother responding to criticism. It is not an advise!
So you want to marry a woman that is not poor? What is your definition of a poor woman?
I think one should not marry a lazy woman, with the wrong attitude about money. This include making of money and management of money. Avoid women and people with an entitlement mentality.
Avoid selfish people.
A lady once got in touch with me on Nairaland, she is a full time house wife. She wanted to invest N10 millon. I always ask people the source of their funds The woman said her husband placed her on a monthly salary of 150k every month, she inflated house expenses and the children school fees. Which she claimed she uses in settling her parents and siblings expenses.
I now told her to first of all discuss with her husband, because my wife always seek my advice whenever she wants to invest.
But this woman said she could not tell her husband, she said if the husband should know that she has that type of fund, the husband might reduce her salary, reduce house upkeep allowance, start paying the school fees himself and scrutinize all expenses.
Apart from that she said her husband was currently broke, he needed a loan of N5 million from his bank that will fetch him a profit of N2 million.
I sha advised her to buy money market funds, but whenever I remember that encounter it makes me to fear and respect some women.

Exactly, all those scams where the ladies will willingly hand over her jewelries to a gang and add transport. All those guys that their wives have access to their vault, I'd say be grateful especially if you have been married for at least 15years. The ones that don't trust their wife with their funds do so for a reason, better not to judge them. You can trust someone in one thing but not in another, so it's not usually that the wife is a thief, it's usually a complex situation, difficult to explain. Barrytone: Its easier to defraud a lady than a man. That type of fraud that says if you tell the next person you are dead. |

You have a very strong point here, as long as it is not part of the norm in the society, it becomes an uphill task. Your own children can end up revolting against you because everywhere outside they hear something different from what you are teaching them. LordAdam16: It has to become a cultural thing for it to be pervasive enough to engender lasting change.
Confucius harped on saving. He was born in 551 BC. Saving is an integral part of the Chinese identity to this day. Indians are infamous for being thrifty. The Japanese are infamous for their discipline. The Jews are infamous for being thrifty and creating wealth. The Germans; well we call them "machines" for a reason.
All 5 ethnicities represent the best of humankind. And if anything catastrophic were to happen, it'd be a bad choice to bet against any of the 5 re-emerging to take a leading role in world affairs.
Teaching your kids the tenets of saving and investing is as important as giving birth to them; but we need a vast societal support system to make it not seem like a losing fight.
If you've ever attended a Bar Mitzvah or Bat Mitzvah or Chinese New Year gathering, you'd understand why.
Our culture is too consumerist. It's a consequence of a few things I wouldn't go into; but the worst part is we simply do not yet appear to have the ability to correct course.
