A Nigerian senior army officer who was kidnapped over the weekend was found dead Tuesday night. Col. Samaila Inusa’s body was found near a village in northern Kaduna state, where he was abducted, and investigators believe he was killed the same day he was taken, the Nigerian army said. “The Nigerian Army wishes to regrettably inform the public that Colonel Samaila Inusa who was kidnapped on Sunday 27th March 2016, was found dead today at about 6:00 p.m.,” Nigerian army spokesman Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman said in an online statement Tuesday. “Preliminary investigation revealed that most likely the late senior officer was killed same day he was kidnapped by his abductors. This is because the body was found already decomposing around Ajyaita village off Eastern Bypass Kaduna, Kaduna state.” Inusa, a serving officer at the Nigerian Army School of Infantry in Jaji, was in his car with his wife when unknown gunmen intercepted his vehicle Saturday night near the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corp.’s refinery junction in the Chikun local government area. They later dropped off Inusa’s wife and drove away with him in his car, heading toward Nigeria’s capital of Abuja. It remains unknown how many abductors there were and what their motive was for the kidnapping. The Nigerian army has offered a 1 million naira reward (about $5,020) to anyone with useful information that could lead to the arrest of Inusa’s abductors. It also launched a manhunt to rescue the colonel, but the operation has proved unsuccessful. His kidnappers reportedly never communicated any demands, according to Nigerian newspaper THISDAY. The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, a minority Shiite Muslim sect in the north, has denied any involvement, after THISDAY quoted a “reliable intelligence officer” saying the kidnapping might be revenge against the Nigerian army over the deadly raids last year in the northern city of Zaria in Kaduna state. The military raids ended in the reported killings of several members of the group and the arrest of their leader, Ibrahim Zakzaky. The Islamic Movement of Nigeria called the claim “false, unsubstantiated and mischievous” and condemned all forms of violence, saying its members would never use crime to meet any of its objectives. “Crime and criminal activities are fundamentally sinful and are not in our character,” Ibrahim Musa, a spokesman for the religious group, said in an online statement Monday. The raids on the Shiite sect occurred a day after members tried to block a convoy carrying Nigerian army chief of staff Lt. Col. Tukur Buratai to an inauguration ceremony for recruits in Zaria, witnesses had told Reuters. At least seven people, including Zakzaky’s deputy and chief spokesman, were apparently killed in the clash. Usman, the Nigerian army spokesman, accused Islamic Movement of Nigeria members of trying to assassinate Buratai and said soldiers were forced to shoot in defense when the group’s members refused to move out of the convoy’s way. www.ibtimes.com/nigerian-army-officer-kidnapping-update-col-samaila-inusa-found-dead-kaduna-state-2345029 |
Officers of the Nigerian Police Force on Sunday disrupted the stakeholders meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at its secretariat in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital. The team of mobile police officers were said to have informed the PDP state chairman, Alhaji Musa Ibrahim Dan -Illela, that they were acting based on instruction from Abuja, ordering the meeting to be stopped due to “security threats”, stressing that the police uncovered plot by suspected All Progressives Congress, APC, thugs to attack the party stalwarts during the meeting. Dan Illela, however, described the alleged plot to attack the party members as stated by the police as baseless and unfounded. The State party Chairman wondered why the police could disrupt its meeting after formally notifying all security agencies and was granted permission. “I wonder how after granting us permission the police could still come to disrupt the meeting and deprive us of our constitutional right of peaceful assembly and association.” Dan Illela further stated that the APC chairman in the state, Alhaji Attahiru Maccido, when contacted denied knowledge of such alleged plot by his party to attack members of the PDP. “The APC chairman denied any knowledge of such plot,” Dan Illela said. dailypost.ng/2016/03/28/police-disrupt-pdp-stakeholders-meeting-over-claims-of-attack-by-apc-members/ |
For describing those calling for the removal of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele over secret recruitment, Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole , has come under heavy bashing. A civil society organization, Advocacy for Societal Rights Advancement and Development Initiative (ASRADI), described Oshiomhole as “the governor of a state in Nigeria who looks, dresses, talks and behaves like a palm wine tapper.” In a statement issued by its Executive Director, Mr Deolu Oyinlola, ASRADI said that while it refused “to be dragged into a mudslinging war with the garrulous character who assumed the role of spokesman for both President Muhammadu Buhari and the CBN governor”, it would not allow Oshiomhole to obfuscate issues with his muddle-headed musings. The statement reads: “In order for the public to decide who – between those calling for Mr. Emefiele’s removal and the classless state governor – is politicizing what ASRADI believes is a straight forward case of abuse of office and betrayal of public trust, we would like to pose the following questions: “Is it ‘faceless and shadowy’ groups (according to the loose cannon and his fake coalition of “CSOs”) that forced Emefiele to unlawfully release raw cash of forty seven million dollars ($47m) in 17 suitcases to Sambo Dasuki as part of what is now famously known as Dasukigate? Is a CBN governor who is suspected to be deeply involved in what, clearly, is money laundering, standing on any moral high ground to remain in that office? “Is it our loquacious pigmy’s ‘palm wine drinkers’ that scandalously employed the sons/daughters/ nephews/nieces/wards of people like President Muhammadu Buhari, former Vice-President Abubakar Atiku, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’aba. Internal Affairs Minister Dambazzau, IGP Arase, Customs CG Hameed Alli, NNPC GMD Ibe Kachikwu, governor of Adamawa State, the deputy governors of Delta and Bayelsa States; to mention but a few? “At the last count, Emefiele has secretly employed 909 privileged Nigerians without advertising a single vacancy! Which CSO worthy of that appellation would support such a patently anomalous and egregiously corrupt exercise? Little wonder, no individual’s name was associated with a release that was attributed to a phoney ‘coalition of CSOs’ ! It is, in all probability, safe to conclude that Emefiele and the state governor in question – between them – created the ‘coalition’ out of desperation.” The group said it was at a loss as to what the connection was between the aforementioned cases of indiscretion on the part of the CBN governor, and the introduction of Biometric Verification numbers, the addition of 41 items to the import prohibition list or the re-organization of the operations of BDCs as preposterously suggested by the governor and his suspicious coalition of CSOs. “It is a shame and an embarrassment for someone who became governor of a state based on a reputation of being a comrade, would curiously make it his business to be defending the indefensible so senselessly?” the group asked. It stated that with leaders like ‘this interloping fellow who seems to suffer permanently from verbal diarrhoea,’ Nigeria was in deeper trouble than previously thought. The group advise Emefiele, to jump rather than be pushed because if he had any decency, he would by now have tendered his resignation and turned himself in at the offices of the anti-graft agencies. It stated: “One gratifying fact, though, is that there is no statute of limitations on criminal offences.” www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2016/03/28/oshiomhole-under-attack-for-defending-cbn-governors-secret-recruitment/ |

Northern youths under the auspices of
Arewa Intergrity Youth Forum have taken a
swipe at Sen. Bola Tinubu over comments
berating the Minister of State for Petroleum,
Mr. Ibe Kachikwu concerning the on going
fuel crisis in the nation. The group while addressing newsmen in Abuja today, expressed their support for the ongoing reforms in the oil sector noting that the advent of Kachikwu has cleansed the oil sector of hawks which have over the years held the sector hostage. Speaking on behalf of the group, the Coordinator, Mallam Ibrahim Abubakar, expressed dismay over the comments credited to Tinubu who had earlier in the begining of the administration had advised Nigerians to be patient with the government as it is trying to undo damage caused by the previous administration. According to him, Nigerians perfectly understand the current situation in the supply and distribution of fuel to reach everyone and this is the major reason why there have not been any form of protest or uprising as was done in the past. He therefore warned that any attempt to trigger Nigerians to embark on any mass action will be rejected by the Nigerian people without any further delay. “we are today bewildered at the manner of double talk a revered leader in the calibre of Tinubu could engage himself, not minding his stand and position in the polity. Has he so soon forgotten that he advised nigerians to be patient with thus government because the previous administration had caused so much damage which had to be cleared ? What has changed soon?” He querried. The group has further accused the All Progressives Congress (APC), leader of fronting for sinister interest whose intention is to continue in the mold of the dismantled cabal and continue the looting of the oil sector, at a time when his party is begging for funding to move the party forward. It has also warned Tinubu to steer clear the petroleum sector as all his actions point to the fact that he intends to discredit the good works of Kachikwu in order to instigate his sack thereby making way for him to plant a stooge to continue in the looting regime as experienced in the previous years. He said “Kachikwu has brought sanity into the oil sector, which is what is first needed to engineer development in any sector particularly that the present administration inherited a messy economy whose only cell is oil revenue. Meanwhile the group has declared its support for the ongoing measures to sanitise the oil sector and called on nigerians to bear with the hardship as according to them it is aimed at producing a solid institution. http://www.thebreakingtimes.com/flash-arewa-youths-berate-tinubu-over-kachikwu/ |

Palpable tension on Friday enveloped Gbaramatu kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State as men of the Nigerian Navy recently deployed to the area following renewed vandalization of oil installations, were alleged to have shot dead a sand scooper on Thursday. The victim identified as Bernard Pius was allegedly killed at a jetty in Tebujor Okpelama community, a Gbaramatu enclave where wanted ex-militant leader, High Chief Government Ekpemukpolo alias Tompolo hails from. Since the incident, anger is reported to be building up among the people as the fragile peace existing in the kingdom was said to have been threatened by the killing. Tebujor Okpelama community chairman, Moses Yabrade told journalists at the village that the late Pius was scooping sand at the jetty when a naval officer he identified as Izonfade Kenneth led other naval men to the area and shot at their son unprovoked who fell into the river where he struggled to death. The Navy officer who is incidentally an Ijaw, regularly patrolled the vicinity in a gun boat following recent vandalization of major pipelines in the waterways of Warri South West Council, Yabrade narrated. Tebujor Okpelama community chairman ex plained; “The incident happened at about 10pm Thursday night. Pius was scooping sand and it is a normal commercial activity at such quiet time when fishermen also ply their trade. The victim was alerted by folks that his sand boat on a 40 horsepower engine at the Jetty was drifting. “He then rushed back and was pulling it back ashore with another boat. That was the point Izonfade patrolled in with other colleagues in a gunboat. After shooting and killing him he moved into the community bragging about the act and threatening to shoot another person if he does not get gratification. “He was offered N5000 before he joined his colleagues in the waiting gunboat and they disappeared, leaving us to mourn our dead. Incidentally, the shooter is an Ijaw man we initially see as one of us, but he and his col leagues have been terrorizing us. The officer must be brought to book or we will take to self-help.” A prominent Gbaramatu Chief, Chief Godspower Gbenekama, the Bebenowei (Chief Mobilizer) of Gbaramatu kingdom lamented the incident calling on the federal government to ensure that the naval officer was arrested and persecuted. Gbenekama who conveyed the corpse of the middle age man to mortuary said if nothing was done by the government the situation may snowballed into crisis in the Niger Delta region. But in a swift reaction to the allegation, Com mander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, Commodore Raimi Mohammed said it was too early for him to give true picture of what transpired, noting that his men may have followed standard operating procedures www.thebreakingtimes.com/army-kills-one-in-gbaramatu-as-hunt-for-tompolo-continues/ |
A massive fire that began late Friday at the
Sabon Gari Market in Kano, is still raging
more than 12 hours after. The fire started at about 10 PM, and is believed to have destroyed properties worth millions of naira by Saturday morning. It was not clear what caused the fire. But witnesses said it started around the Sani Abacha Mosque where books and other items are sold, before spreading to Gidan Magge. Fire Service personnel initially found it difficult to access the market because of the large number of shop owners and suspected hoodlums working to either salvage or loot goods. Residents accused the fire fighters of arriving the scene almost five hours late, and not coming with enough water to stop the blaze. The Sabon Gari Market fire is coming less than three months after fire gutted the Singer Food market also in Kano, destroying goods and shops. www.thebreakingtimes.com/flash-fire-ravages-sabongari-market/ |
President Muhammad Buhari on Thursday responded to growing criticisms of his administration’s performance, saying his government still has years to go. Addressing leaders of the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abuja, the president acknowledged his government was facing increasing attacks 10 months after taking office “I know you are being harassed since the election that they haven’t seen anything on the ground,” the president said at the APC’s National Executive Committee meeting. “Well, if you have any explanation that could be accepted, (it) is that you have three more years to go.” Mr. Buhari spoke about his government’s efforts to strengthen the economy, fight insecurity and improve the electoral system. He also defended his frequent trips abroad. “ For globetrotting , sometimes, you need to present your case on personal basis to your economic colleagues and neighbors. “Nothing is better than personal touch and I believe that we are learning a lot and eventually, the nation will realize so.” The president concluded by again, urging party members to accept criticisms in their strides. “I don’t envy you on the harassment you are going through from your constituencies. Take it with a lot of determination and we will be all right, God willing,” he said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/200760-buhari-replies-critics-says-i-three-years.html |
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members in the House of Representatives, on Tuesday urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately release results of re-run elections in Rivers. Briefing newsmen in Abuja, the caucus led by Minority Leader of the house, Rep. Leo Ogor, condemned the suspension of the election, saying it was strange to the country’s electoral laws. According to it, in accordance with section 27of the Electoral Act, the Constitution and all Supreme Court judgements, elections were concluded, and results had been announced at the unit levels. “In this context, anything contrary to the announcement of the result is a breach of all our electoral laws and evidently a coup against the people of Rivers State. “It is very sad that it is the umpire, that is, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that is spearheading this illegality abetted by law enforcement agencies, particularly the military whose attention is needed in the North-East,’’ they said. The caucus also said that the conduct and actions of INEC did not just show incompetence but a regression from gains of the reformed electoral system. An officer of the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) contracted by
Rotimi Amaechi, Nigeria’s minister for
Transport to help the All Progressives
Congress (APC) to rig the Rivers rerun
election of Saturday, March 19, 2016 has
been arrested by detectives of the Nigeria
Police Force.
The officer, Mrs. Ekwi Adebisa (pictured),
was apprehended with three fake results
after vigilant voters raised an alarm at the
collation centre of Ward 10, Port Harcourt
Local Government Area where she was
presiding.
When the voters sighted her with fake result
sheets and she was trying to switch the
original with the fake to announce the
falsified results, the voters raised alarm and
prevented her from changing the result
sheets. Soon after, Rotimi Amaechi stormed the collation centre with over 100 soldiers and abducted Mrs. Adebisa from the collation centre at Ward 10 in Port Harcourt. Her abduction suspended the collation of results at the Ward. According to an inside source who spoke with The Trent , The INEC officer was taken to Novotel Hotel where Amaechi and Dakuku Peterside, the director general of NIMASA, and Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, the managing director of the NDDC were lodged and the plot to doctor the election results for the Ward was perfected. But, unfortunately for Amaechi, the voters had lodged a complaint with the police over the matter and the police trailed the INEC officer to Novotel Hotel where she was arrested by the Nigerian Police and taken to Mile 1 Police Station in Port Harcourt. According to citizen reporters at the ward, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mrs. Blessing Asiegbe for the House of Representatives seat had won the election overwhelmingly. However, Rotimi Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and chieftain of the APC swore to steal her victory by all means because of a long- standing standoff with her late husband. Mr. Asiegbu. Mrs. Asiegbu has openly accused Rotimi Amaechi of killing her late husband leading to a bitter rivalry between she and Amaechi. Leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) including the Governor, Nyesom Wike got wind of the the arrest of the compromised INEC officer and visited the police station for explanations. Immediately, Governor Wike and PDP leaders arrived at the police station, more than 400 soldiers stormed the station in the company of the minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, Dakuku Peterside, and Ibim Semenitari and ordered the police to release Mrs. Ekwi Adebisa to them. The police resisted the order and Mrs. Adebisa, now a suspect of electoral fraud, has been transferred to the Force CID Headquarters of Rivers State for further investigation. |
The Osun State government has announced that it will be unable to pay State workers their March salaries. Osun State received only N6.23m in funding for the month of March. According to Governor Rauf Aregbesola, the government will not be able to pay the State Secretariat’s electricity bills, let alone its N2.6bn wage bill. March’s federal allocation represents a significant decline from February’s allocation of N1.677bn. Additionally, Osun State received N19.418m and N726.1m from the exchange rate gain and value added tax, bringing the total February allocation to N2.423bn. The reason for Osun State’s insufficient funding comes from debt obligations amounting to over N2bn. The debt payments included external debt and an irrevocable standing payment order (ISPO). Every other state was granted a March allocation of at least N1bn, with Akwa Ibom, Delta, Lagos, and Rivers States topping the list with N8.557bn, N6.062 bn, N6.612 bn and N5.427bn, respectively. saharareporters.com/2016/03/18/osun-state-will-not-pay-state-workers-march-salaries |
Elder statesman, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, has called on Christians in Nigeria to rise against any move to Islamize the country. He warned that the secular status of the country must be respected. In an interaction with journalists at his Lagos home on the recent move by President Muhammadu Buhari to drag Nigeria to the Saudi Arabia-led Coalition Against Terror, Prof. Nwabueze said: “We have had this kind of thing before when Gen. Ibrahim Babangida took Nigeria into the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC). “You remember that and that nearly tore this country into pieces and I remember the crisis created by this. The secular status of this country must be respected. Religion is one of the things that arouse so much bitterness. People regard their religion, their faith as an essential part of their being, both in life here and life after; they should not play with the religious character of this country. That’s why it’s said that no religion must be adopted as the religion of the state. “Now this thing about coalition of countries headed by Saudi Arabia against terrorism, this country is not a Muslim country. It’s not a Muslim state. If they are forming alliances of Muslim states, okay but don’t drag Nigeria into it,” he said. While he applauded Christian in the north ern part of the country for rising against the move, Nwabueze said: “Christians in the North are not strong enough to challenge the action. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Christians all over the country should be up in arms as they were when Babangida took us to OIC. I’m surprised that the action so far has not engulfed the whole country.” Answering question on the reputation of the President and having what it takes to fight corruption, he said: “They are two issues; the will is one issue, you may have the will and I think he has the will but is he going about it the right way? Is perversion not an aspect of corruption? You pervert the constitution, institutions all in the name of the war against corruption, what is that? Is that not corruption? www.thebreakingtimes.com/flash-resist-plot-by-buhari-to-islamize-nigeria-prof-ben-nwabueze/ |
World oil prices rose for a third straight day today
with traders brushing aside news of a rocket
attack by jihadists on a gas plant in OPEC energy
producer Algeria, the AFP reported. The development sees the price of Brent crude, against which Nigeria’s oil is priced, rise to $42.29 dollars, $4.29 higher than the country’s proposed benchmark of $38 for the 2016 budget. According to the AFP , with confidence growing that the world’s biggest crude producers will hammer out a deal to curb output, investors piled back into the commodity after they toyed with 13- year lows last month. Qatar’s energy minister, Mohammed al-Sada, confirmed this week that exporters from within and outside the OPEC cartel will meet April 17 in Doha, stoking hopes of an agreement to ease a global supply glut. Around 1215 GMT on Friday, United States benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in April was up 72 cents at $40.92 a barrel. Brent North Sea crude for May delivery won 75 cents to $42.29 a barrel compared with Thursday’s close. WTI had advanced 4.5 per cent Thursday, closing above $40 for the first time since the start of December. Buying in recent days has been fuelled also by the Federal Reserve, which on Wednesday halved its forecast for US interest rate hikes this year. The outlook, citing a global slowdown and market turmoil, sent the dollar plunging, which in turn makes oil cheaper for holders of rival currencies. “The expectation that the leading OPEC oil producing countries and Russia will agree on binding production caps on 17 April is lending prices additional buoyancy,” said Commerzbank analyst Carsten Fritsch. Elsewhere Friday, jihadists launched a rocket attack on an Algerian gas plant jointly operated by foreign companies, three years after a deadly hostage crisis at another facility in the Sahara desert. There were no reports of casualties in Friday’s attack, companies and workers at the site said. Algeria is one of the world’s largest exporters of natural gas, with revenue from fossil fuels accounting for 95 per cent of its exports. www.punchng.com/41207-2/ |
The Kano State House of Assembly on Thursday removed its chief whip, Zubairu Mamuda, for recognizing the immediate- past governor of the state, Rabiu Kwankwaso, as the state leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC. Mr. Mamuda represents Madobi constituency, where the former governor hails from. The impeachment followed a motion moved by a member representing Nassarawa Local Government Area, Ibrahim Gama, on the floor of the house. Mr. Gama, alias Lugard, argued that the removal of the chief whip had become imperative in view of the legislator’s disloyalty to the governor, Abdullahi Ganduje. The house unanimously adopted the motion and immediately removed Mr. Mamuda. The members then replaced Mr. Mamuda with Labaran Madari, a member representing Warawa constituency. Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES after the sitting, the chairman, House Committee on Information, Salisu Ibrahim, justified the removal, saying it was carried out within the purview of the law. He added that APC constitution is clear on who is the leader of the party in a state. Mr. Ibrahim explained the party constitution says the governor is the party leader, except where opposition party is in government. On Tuesday, 36 out of 40 members of the house pledged allegiance to the governor, deepening the estrangement between Mr. Ganduje and his predecessor. www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/nwest/200314-kano-assembly-impeaches-chief-whip-recognising-kwankwaso-apc-leader.html |
Increasingly, the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim
Sulu-Gambari, is becoming a tool in the
hands of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola
Saraki, SaharaReporters sources in Kwara State
say. The Senate President, who is facing prosecution for alleged false declaration of assets and possible loss of his exalted position, is using a variety of weapons to fight his political battles, and the most prominent of his battle axes are the Emir and State Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed. A recent victim of the onslaught is Alhaji Ibrahim Oniye, Makaman Ilorin, who was suspended by Governor Ahmed as Chairman of Kwara State Parent-Teachers Association. The suspension of Oniye, who was also barred by the Emir from stepping into his palace, did not come as a shock to many people in the state. The man, although blind, is a reputed straight talker, who is not afraid to speak the truth to those in authority. His fearless nature was said to be one of the attributes that endeared him to the late Emir Aliyu Abdulkadir, the 10th Emir of Ilorin, who appointed him the first Makaman of the Ilorin Emirate in 1993. Our sources say what got Oniye into trouble was his decision to tell Alhaji Sulu-Gambari that more people in Kwara are angry with Saraki and are actually cursing him. Oniye was said to have told the Emir that those cursing Saraki are mainly the poor, who see the Senate President as one who has taken what belongs to them and continues to do so through Governor Ahmed, who is seen as a stooge. Alhaji Oniye was said to have made this observation known to the Emir at a meeting called by the latter to find out why huge financial outlays on prayers by Saraki failed to stop the Supreme Court from halting the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) from going ahead with the Senate President’s prosecution. In attendance at the meeting were prominent Muslim clerics and Ilorin title holders, who preferred to deodorize the real situation until Oniye spoke and told the meeting about the anger of Kwarans with Saraki. The treatment of Oniye by the palace and the governor has sparked disquiet in the state and invited scrutiny of the Emir. SaharaReporters sources said that as word leaked that Alhaji Oniye had been suspended and that his PTA chairmanship would be taken away, the political establishment in Ilorin reversed the decision. By the time SaharaReporters reached Alhaji Oniye, it was apparent he had ready-made answers. Carefully picking his words, he denied he had not been suspended and blamed the news on those that might be jealous of his many titles and prestigious position within the Ilorin Emirate. He also said he was never removed as the PTA chairman at the state level. He stressed that as he had never been “queried or indicted” for any malfeasance, he couldn’t have been removed. Asked if he had spoken up for teachers whose salaries had remained unpaid in the state, he waxed philosophical saying he is the “father of all” and then asked rhetorically if there are no unpaid teachers in Osun, Bauchi, Kano and other places. When SaharaReporters pressed Alhaji Oniye regarding the Saraki trial in Abuja, he gave interesting answers. First, he said it was his duty not to allow the image of Ilorin to be dragged in the mud by the trial since Saraki was Ilorin’s son, and later, that he would advise people not to jubilate over Saraki’s predicament unless he is pronounced guilty by the tribunal. When our reporter read this portion of his statement to him he asked that it be taken out completely saying he had no comment on Saraki because he doesn’t want to be dragged into politics. SaharaReporters then asked Alhaji Oniye about the reason he worshipped at a local Mosque last Friday as opposed to the Central Mosque where he has always worshipped. On this question he was slightly upset, saying it was stupid of anyone to read meaning into that, claiming that since the Emir went to Ira for the anniversary of the Oba of Ira without taking him along, he was not under any obligation to worship at the Central Mosque. The Emir is currently viewed as simply carrying out the wishes of Saraki and nothing else. Sources in Ilorin said issues in the emirate hardly get the Emir’s attention unless they have the potential to enhance Saraki’s fortunes. Also sucked into the Saraki scheme is the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) led by Alhaji Abdulhameed Adi. The IEDPU showed its true character when it went to present a Qur'an and Alkayba to Saraki in the Senate shortly after his indictment. The union, at the prompting of the Senate President, scrapped its Ilorin branch, which comprised younger, better-educated and radical members. The branch had been opposed to Saraki’s stranglehold on the affairs of the state. Members of the branch decided to go to court, a move that was leaked to the Emir, who called them to a meeting. On arrival at the palace, the Emir informed them that the most important issue was how to ensure that Saraki does not lose the Senate Presidency. He followed that up with an order that they should return to their homes and pray for Saraki. Those at the meeting expressed shock at how the Emir had begun conflating Ilorin well-being with Saraki’s. The bigger shock was witnessed last week when Saraki visited Ilorin. The Emir left the palace and followed Saraki to his residence, telling those obviously surprised by his abominable conduct that he was escorting his 'son' home. Currently, it is said that the Emir rarely attends meetings of Northern Emirs. He is said to be fully occupied running errands for Saraki, leaving many displeased with the way the Emir conducts himself in the community. Many, however, link the Emir’s servile conduct to a rumored prophecy that the 11th Emir would be deposed. The current is the 11th Emir and he is said to believe that it is the Saraki family that can stop the predicted deposition. In the meantime, sources say copious sums of money are being spent on marabouts and traditional diviners to ensure that Saraki escapes justice. Many marabouts are said to have been sent on trips to Saudi Arabia to pray for him. Locally, some others were contracted to say special prayers on Sobi Hill in Ilorin. They were said to have been told to come down and immediately slaughter a camel. They, however, met a dead camel when they came down from the hill, which was viewed as an indication that the prayers said had no effect. Traditional diviners are said to have been hired for Saraki by the Emir of Okuta, in Baruten Local Government Area. Saraki is said to have promised to elevate the traditional ruler to the status of a First Class Emir. Three weeks ago, three diviners were brought in from the neighboring Republic of Benin. All these activities are being funded with state resources, which are controlled by Saraki, with Governor Ahmed said to be no more than a mannequin. Through state resources, judicial officials, security operatives, media practitioners and politicians are being bribed. The unsurprising consequence is that the state is unable to pay its workers or meet basic obligations. saharareporters.com/2016/03/13/how-saraki-turned-emir-ilorin-‘houseboy’ |

ABUJA - The Presidency has refuted some media
reports that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo's trip to
India tomorrow had been cancelled following the
journey of President Mohammadu Buhari's to
Equatorial Guinea. The Vice President is billed for Indian/African summit. Some online media had reported that the Vice President cancelled his trip to avoid the Senate President, Bukola Saraki from taking the mantle of leadership as Acting President in the absence of the president and his vice. The report added that the protocol officers made a blunder by scheduling the two trips to Malabo, Equatorial Guinea for the President and India for India at the same time. But in realizing that Saraki would assume office as the number three citizen in the hierarchy of government, the Vice President cancelled his trip. But reacting to the development on Sunday, the presidency through the media aide to the Vice President, Mr. Laolu Akande said the report holds no water. He said that the minister of industry, trade and investment, Mr. Okey Enalemah would be leading a delegation of Nigerians to the Summit. "Nigeria has been invited to the Indian/African summit and the minister of industry, trade and investment will be leading a delegation to the event. "There is nothing like cancellation. Remember that the visit of the Vice President to any country is not treated in secrecy. "Whenever the Vice President is to travel out of the country, we inform Nigerians. "So, this story in question is a bunch of speculation. There is no cancellation", he said. www.vanguardngr.com/2016/03/osinbanjos-trip-to-india-not-cancelled-presidency/ |

Nigerians have set aside Tuesday, March 1st to boycott bank transactions and activities all over the country in order to protest excessive charges introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which banks are using as an avenue to extort money from unsuspecting customers. The boycott is being initiated by the Consumer Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria (CAFON) and the Coalition of Nigerian Consumer Protection Associations. According to CAFON founder Sola Salako, the boycott is tagged as “No Banking Day” and is aimed to register Nigerians’ anger over outrageous charges on deposits, transfers and withdrawals. Ms. Salako is asking Nigerians to stay away from the banks on Tuesday and to shun any transactions either on the counter or online with any bank. Ms. Salako then said that the CBN gave the directive with a caveat that those charges are negotiable but wondered why banks have refused to give the opportunity to customers to negotiate it. “They just deduct money from our accounts because they have access to it. The charges may look small, but when you put them together they add up to a lot. So they sit there and declare huge profits at the end of the year,” she said. Ms. Salako also noted that the banks have not contributed anything meaningful to the country’s economic quagmires and instead inflicted untold hardship on common people through their unethical practices. The group described the charges as unacceptable, “what we are saying is the boycott will let us reduce their income for one day as a warning. If we don’t patronize them they won’t be in business. So respect us when we say this is not acceptable to us,” Ms. Salako said. Ms. Salako disclosed that the boycott is the first phase of the protest and the group is planning to take to the streets to pressure the banks and relevant authorities to rescind their decision on the outrageous charges It will be recalled that public outcry has followed the introduction of the Current Account Maintenance fee by the CBN, saying that this amounts to legalizing illegality. Many customers have also complained about inconsistency of the stamp duty charges from the Commission on Turnover (COT). saharareporters.com/2016/02/29/nigerians-boycott-banks-tuesday-over-excessive-charges |

Nigeria has donated 15 cars and 100 motorcycles to the electoral commission of neighbouring Benin. The Nigerian Ambassador to Benin Republic, Lawrence Obisakin, during the donation, lauded President Muhammadu Buhari's efforts at asserting Nigeria's leadership in Africa. Mr. Obisakin said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Cotonou on the sidelines of the donation of 15 Hilux vehicles and 100 motorcycles to the Independent Electoral Commission of Benin by Nigeria. The outgoing ambassador said the gesture would further strengthen the excellent bilateral relationship between the two countries. "I want to say bravo to President Muhammadu Buhari, the government and the people of Nigeria, and the diplomacy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria." The diplomat said the donations were made despite the financial challenges facing Nigeria. "We know the economic conjuncture of Nigeria, However, our president, in his wisdom in spite of the economic difficulties, has been able to be sensitive to the dire need of Benin. "President Buhari, in his wisdom, has been able to find a way of helping a country that needs by far more assistance," he said. Mr. Obisakin said the people of Benin were grateful and will continually show appreciation over Nigeria's support. "You heard the Chairman of Benin Electoral Commission saying this is the most welcome gift that they've ever received because the election is next week Sunday. "It is a presidential election and it promises to be very keen and very serious and they need the means because Benin is one of the least- developed countries. "So, Nigeria is lifting up Benin just like Europe, Germany and Britain, did to the Southern countries. "This goes to show that Nigeria is indeed a friendly nation, Nigeria is a country that is sensitive to the needs of others," he said. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bulus Lolo, also commended Mr. Buhari, saying he had given visibility to Nigeria's contributions to African countries since his assumption of office. "As far as I know, we have supported several countries but visibility being given is only under the Buhari's administration. "The quantum of support may even be more by previous governments, but they did not take the necessary step to make it public. "You can see that marked on these vehicles is an inscription: 'Donated by the Federal Republic of Nigeria', that is an advertisement that you are making. "Clearly, wherever these vehicles go, everyone seeing them will know that they have come from the Government of Nigeria. We made donations in the past but we did not declare." Mr. Lolo had earlier presented the items to Tiando Emmanuel, President, Commission Electorale Nationale Autonome of Benin toward the March 6 general elections in the country. africabusinesscommunities.com/news/despite-cash-crunch-nigeria-donates-vehicles-motorcycles-to-benin-republic.html |
