the funny thing is even the small company themselves are not willing to hire anybody even if it is for free just to get experience thy prefer experience people who will bring productivity to thier enterprise,i think the problem here is that the curriculum in our university is not industry based,unlike the curriculum u find at universities abroad where u do research with a company so that after the program you are directly hired to continue with the project,the best one can do in this situation to start attending specialized courses that meets the industry demand.

well music is spiritual and it affects the mind in what ever state it is,,for me when i want to meditate i play Enigma,deep forest,adiemus ,when i fall in love or want to toast a chick i play luther vandros - nothing better than love ,keith sweat,james ingram,peabo bryson,uncle sam etc.

well i never wanted to comment on this thread but some comments from some people has made me to do otherwise
first and foremost we have to differentiate those u did engineering becos of the interest for the course and those who did just 4 the money.engineering is one of the best courses to be taught in the university,look around you everything that makes a man comfortable has been produced by engineers!,the problem with nigeria is that our leaders are not ready to face the technological challenges that the engineering profession requires,everything is politized,just as you have engineers working in banks so u have some people that read sociology working in these big oil companies based on man know man,and also if you really love the profession and you want to get more out of it by way of high salary,then you should be ready spend more in acquiring certificates in some specialist courses,its quite worrisome to know that these courses is not attainable in Nigeria and the governmnet is shouting about local content!
western nations spend millions in research and when they get a break through they inturn sell this product to other nations at a high profit! Nigeria inclusive ,if you want to get the best give your best and find the best,

In saudi arabia the annual salary for a professional driller with 8 years + experience is about $1m plus and will go higher by the end  of 2007,its becos this country knows the value of highly trained engineers they spend money on training so they invest more on research .

Its just recently that the nnpc is just training some engineers on hysis,pdms and other oil and gas software and i hear the selection is still politized so that is the problem we are having in this country everything is politized even football.Do not be surprised that after the training notting will be heard from this people ,no recruitment will take place and all the training ,time and resources will be one BIG WASTE.they will end up recruiting expatriates for the same job!

I for one has lost faith in the nigerian dream for engineers ,if there was ever one .
I am concentrating in improving myself and find a foreign country that is willing to pay for my service.
There r lots and lots of option outside this nigerian shores ,like benin republic they have started licencing their oil blocks about 30 of them ,liberia ,congo,gabon,angola,sudan,libya, egypt and lots of other african countries ,these countries have started serious oil exploration as such they is need for recruiting engineers at  all levels.

Its quite worrisome to note that a professional body like NSE is doing nothing ,what do u expect them to do ,to me i dont see the need in being a member cos it will not improve ur skills ,it might on paper but that is just where it ends,the NSE in Nigeria do not command respect thats y some companies high enginers and pay them 15k ,take it or leave ,the brains behind the banking industry did their home work well that is y the banking industry is booming but what is NSE doing?

Men its better to be a member of a foreign society like SPE society of petroleum engineers than being a member of NSE,when u do get to be a member u will really understand what i am talking about ,latest update on new technologies ,latest business idea and strategies,wide network of professional friends and peers,international connections and seminars and lots more ,it beats being an NSE member!
as for the banking industry,they have really worked hard to bring around a boom in their profession ,it is a challenge to the Engineering societies in this country to do the same .
I will stop here until some one tempts me again.

Hi guys ,i have been following this thread and i want to say here that mermaid really do exist !!!.
i have 3 personal experinces to tell ,i will say one here and the rest later

1.In 1998 ,in victoria island around november,a fisherman mistakenly caught a mermaid  under the bridge that links ikoyi with victoria island at ozumba mbadiwe street.

he spread the net at night only to come in the morning around 11.00 to check on what he has  caught, indeed he caught alot of fish and more interesting was that he caught a very big fish because he saw only the tail end of only the mermaid, the body was covered with smaller fishes and weeds from the lagoon.

on close examination he found that the "big fish" was indeed a MERMAID!!!
he raised an alarm that could be heard as far as ajah !  and before u could say what the hell! people started gathering ,there was pandemonium everywhere and it caused a heavy traffick that lasted for 5 hours!.

people were coming down from there vehicles to have a glimpse of this creature,meen i tell u if u see this thing u will have a mixture of fear and attraction!

fear that this thing is not human but yet appears to have both human and a glittering fish tail for legs and attraction that the creature remains a mystery that makes you want to discover more about it.

all the drawings of the mermaid having a long hair ,fish tail and feminine are all true!

back to my story,people made frantic efforts to get the NTA to view the creature,some suggest that it should be taking to the school of oceanography,but the fisherman begged them that it should be returned  back to the lagoon where it came from as he is afraid of a reprisal attack from the mermaids family,since he is a fisherman and fishing is what he and his family does for a living ,he and some other fishermen then used long canoe paddles to push the mermaid back into the lagoon and immediately it slipped into the water it regaind its strenght and went deep into the lagoon with speed. in a flash!

when this mermaid was brought out it was covering her face because of the sun and it was very weak to move because the sun was kind of draining her strenght,, ,,,,,

its something that happens maybe once in a lifetime and i was once a doubting thomas when it comes to the supernatural but seeing what i saw that november 1998,i ve stopped going to lagoons alone not to talk of bar beach,if i see any beautiful babe with long flowing hair ,i take to my heels!!!

If you are doubting if these things exist go to those fishermen at the lagoon between ikoyi and v.i and ask them ,they are in good postion to tell u

i want to use this medium to pray that God should forgive us our sins,grant us our heart desires,strengthenthe unity among us ,bless our families,grant long life and length of days to our parents and destroy heresays and jealousy among us ,I ask this through christ our Lord

It is the country that will be worse for it ,look at US there is a big decline of graduates studying engineering and oil related courses ,due to the massive retrenchment the oil and gas industry is known for ,now they are recruiting returning soldiers,mechanics,retired athletes,wrestlers e.t.c and training them as field engineers,it will soon get to that stage in this country when they will start begging people to study engineering courses with great incentives.

The old guys are getting near to their retirement and when they retire who will mann all the multimillion dollar oil and gas facilities in this country (thats is when they start working).
And i feel its because of the decay in the infastructures in this country ,the 4 refineries are not working ,ajokuta steel ind,is grounded and many other small and medium scale industries grounded coupled with the falling standard of education especially technical courses in the tertiary institutions,what do u expect?

After spending 5yrs + in school u cant just fold ur arms and let ur brain go dormant ! the banks are helping but that will not bring us at par with the industrialised nations of the world,Nigeria have the brains the resources and the capacity to be an industrialised nation ,but with ENGINEERS WORKING IN BANKS!!! it will take some time to achieve that.

The government has no plan for the Nigerian youth let alone graduates,there are some engineering graduates that will prefer to keep lookig for that oil and gas job were he knows he will be very relevant than work behind a counter or go begging for people to come and open account with their banks,but when the government has no plan in place for such dreams to be actualised u cannot blame the poor graduate,who wants to start reaping the fruits of his labour as they say "when the desired is not available ,the available becomes desired".

We engineers should take heart ,time will come when we will be the toast of the oil and gas ,manufacturing companies in Nigeria and beyond,things will definitely change ,just keep attending certification courses,cos when it starts ,its going to be another "HURRICANE GET ANY AVAILABLE ENGINEERING GRADUATES".

Nigeria is really not a tourist heaven but you cant run away from your native country 4 life .
i think u can come for an exploratory visit first,stay in abuja two weeks ,stay in lagos for two wks and jugde 4 ur self ,although it might be a very short time to get the much needed info but you can always ask knowlegedable people about business opportunities before coming full time .
