The United Nations Children’s Fund on Monday said the high prevalence of female genital mutilation in the South-East was a cause for concern. UNICEF said it was worrisome that there was no significant reduction in the rate of the practice, despite sustained awareness campaigns. The Chief Field Officer, UNICEF in Enugu, Mr. Charles Nzuki, disclosed this at a state mid-year review and planning meeting with implementing partners for the South-East zone. According to figures released by Nzuki, Ebonyi State has the highest number of female genital mutilation cases among the South-East states with a 62.3 per cent prevalence rate. Imo and Enugu states followed with 58.4 per cent and 45 per cent prevalence rates, respectively. Abia State has a 44 per cent prevalence rate, while the level of the practice in Anambra State is 30.8 per cent. The meeting reviewed results recorded in the implementation of the 2015 work-plan, and also considered plans for 2016. The UNICEF officer urged representatives of the various South-East state governments to ensure that the programmes discussed at the meeting were integrated into their different states’ year plan. “UNICEF does not have a programme on its own but supports both federal and state governments’ programmes,” Nzuki added. Interestingly, most of those at the meeting said they were not aware of the country’s anti-female genital mutilation law. Nzuki also said it was worrisome that infant mortality was still high in the country despite improved antenatal care.http://www.punchng.com/news/female-genital-mutilation-high-in-south-east-unicef/ |
Casual sex is not just for fun. An interesting study has revealed that casual sex with new partners improves the sperm quality! Researchers at College of Wooster, Ohio have found that men produce healthier and higher volume sperm in a shorter amount of time when exposed to a new woman. Men produced higher quality ejaculates when exposed to novel, rather than familiar women, the researchers found. "Additionally, men ejaculated more quickly when viewing a new woman after being exposed to the same woman repeatedly," added the team from the College of Wooster in Ohio. http://www.hindustantimes.com/sexandrelationships/casual-sex-can-guarantee-healthier-better-sperm-study/article1-1378738.aspx |
omrade Bede Opara is the national president of the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC). In this interview with Taiwo Ogunmola-Omilani, he speaks on issues bedevilling power generation in the country. Excerpts What is your union’s position on the federal government’s recent renewal of the management contract of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) with Manitoba Hydro International (MHI) Limited of Canada? Well, we read in the national newspapers about the extension of the contract awarded to Manitoba Hydro International Limited (MHI) to manage the operations of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). This extension according to the report, was for a period of one year, which will expire on 31st July 2016. This was after the expiration of an initial three-year contract under which the company managed the transmission arm of the power sector in Nigeria. We are not comfortable with the renewal of the agreement because there is more to it. We are of the opinion that before the extension, government should have carefully and clearly evaluated the assignment and job carried out by MHI in improving transmission and the wheeling capacity of the transmission lines with measurable milestones as contained in the contract. We wonder why so much emphasis was placed on the contract renewal rather than an assessment of the impact that the MHI has had on improving and strengthening the operational capacities of TCN. Are you saying government didn’t assess the level of job done by MHI before signing a renewal of the contract? It is not enough to lay claims to improving the power generation capacity that peaked at 4545mw recently, which was as a result of better and improved supply of gas to the thermal stations. It is necessary to ask how to raise the wheeling power of TCN to accommodate and sustain increased or improved generation. It is also necessary that we know the structure the MHI has put in place to accommodate this increased generation in the nearest future because we are aware that a lot of generated megawatts are lost due to the inability of TCN in some locations to evacuate them into the grid. We note that during the last contract period of three years, there was a glaring lack of coordination between the expatriate and Nigerian teams in TCN. There was no team spirit among the management contractors, and also, between the management contractors and their Nigerian counterparts. We expect a better-coordinated work regime, which regrettably is absent. We also expect amongst other matters, serious and committed training programmes of Nigerians – an assignment that constitute part of the MHI contract. There is an urgent need to look inwards in order to identify any challenges that might negatively affect the schedules and plans by Nigerian operators or the management contractors. We expect the TCN as a technical arm of the power sector to be independent and insulated from partisanship political interests and influences to meet the nation’s overall target for the power sector of installed power generation capacity from 6,000MW in 2009 to 20,000MW by 2015 and 35,000MW by 2020. http://leadership.ng/business/451482/power-generation-may-increase-to-7000mw-by-december-opara |

FRANKFURT (Bloomberg) -- Volkswagen Group has resumed building vehicles in Nigeria for the first time in 25 years in a bid to foster sales growth in Africa. Assembly began Tuesday in Lagos of models that will include the Passat, Jetta and CC sedans as well as the Amarok pickup truck, Stallion Group, VW's manufacturing partner, said in a statement. VW confirmed the start of production without specifying planned volumes. Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation with about 170 million people and has the continent's largest economy. The country is emerging as a key growth driver for the entire continent. Global automakers have been expanding manufacturing outside traditional car markets to benefit from tax breaks and avoid import duties. Additional sales in those countries would also cushion the effects of slowing growth in China and contractions in Brazil and Russia. http://europe.autonews.com/article/20150708/ANE/150709894?template=mobile02&X-IgnoreUserAgent=1 |
Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has signed into law a controversial marriage bill legalising polygamy. It brings civil law, where a man was only allowed one wife, into line with customary law, where some cultures allow multiple partners. Controversy surrounded an amendment to the bill, supported by many male MPs, allowing men to take more wives without consulting existing spouses. Traditionally, first wives are supposed to give prior approval. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-27206590 |

Nobel Laureate and foremost social critic, Wole Soyinka, is of the opinion that Nigerians of Igbo extraction are the only people in the country who can be predicted accurately. Delivering a lecture titled ‘Predicting Nigeria, Electoral Ironies’ at the Harvard University Hutchins Centre for African & African American Research, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, the revered scholar described people from that part of the country as “greedy”. source http://newsrescue.com/igbos-vote-based-on-their-stomach-soyinka/#axzz3ZIIlZi00 |
