Nasarawa State University has been shut down following alleged brutal murder of four students and wounding of seven others by soldiers who were brought in to quell a protest by the students of the institution. Spokesman of the university, Jamil Zakari, confirmed the closure of the school, saying he heard of the shooting of students, but added that: “I cannot officially confirm that now.” The students had embarked on the action, which was in its third day, to protest water scarcity. Some students who confirmed the incident to Channels Television claimed that they were on a peaceful protest over the shortage of water supply within the university when suddenly some military men stormed the university campus amidst sporadic gunshots. “They came from nowhere and opened fire on us during which 15 students were shot at, out of which four later died,”a student who participated in the protest, said. According to the president, the National Association of Nigerian Students, Yinka Gbadebo, the protest started at about 8am on Monday. “We don’t know who sent them because the university’s CSO (Chief Security Officer) confirmed to me that he had no idea that the military had interrupted the peaceful protests,”Mr. Gbadebo explained. The NANS president also confirmed to Channels TV that the university has now been closed down on the orders of the university authority and that the military men as of 3pm Monday were still harassing any students they saw within the premises of the university. The Federal Ministry of Education has refuted reports that President Goodluck Jonathan had made a U-turn on the change of name of the University of Lagos. It said on Friday that it had yet to receive any categorical statement from the Federal Government on such a decision. Reports had quoted the new Chairmanof the Governing Council, University ofLagos, Prof. Jerry Gana, as saying President Goodluck Jonathan had changed his mind about renaming the institution after the late Chief MoshoodAbiola. But the Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Olu Lipede, told our correspondent in Abuja on Friday that the President had yet to issue any statement on the matter, noting that the position of the government about the name change remains. He said, “The reports that the government has made a U-turn on the renaming of UNILAG are untrue and misleading; what Prof. Jerry Gana said was that the President was observing the rule of law by not forcing his decision to change the name of the university on the people, but followed the due process by allowing the court to decide the matter. “The President has not issued any categorical statement on the matter and the ministry of education has not received any directive either; so, the directive of the President on the schoolremains the same.” SOURCE- www.informationnaija.com/unilag-remains-maulag-ministry/

The terrorist groups Boko Haram and its splinter group, Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis-Sudan (Ansaru, for short) has commenced a recruitment drive in the South-West with the view of establishing cells preparatory to launching attacks in the zone. The idea is hinged on identifying fundamentalists in the zone who will then coordinate attacks in the zone. According to a top security source, South-West, especially Lagos is attractive to the terror groups because of the economic importance of the zone, and an attack there would affect the nation’s economy. They are also hoping attacks there would instigate ethnic clashes. Other major cities pencilled down for attacks are Ibadan, Abeokuta and Osogbo. The groups had previously found it difficult to penetrate the zone. Presently, it was targeting Northerners living in the zone as potential members as well as people from the zone. According to the security source, the groups were hoping that by targeting people from the zone, cells would be set up easier in the zone. “There is no doubt terror groups have their eyes on the South-West. Their plan is to spread their activities to the zone, which has ahigh Muslim population. “People they are planning to recruit include Northerners living in the South-West as well asYoruba that have the same religious belief with them. It is part of their plan to spread Jihad to Africa,” the source said. On Thursday, a source within the State Security Service had informed this correspondent that the intelligence agency was aware of the efforts of the terror groups to infiltrate the South-West. The source said that the SSS and its sister agencies had long anticipated the high possibility of the attacks extending beyond the North, evidenced by the recent smashing of an Iranian-sponsored terror cell. But another security source said there was a growing discomfort among security personnel that the arrangement put in place by the police authorities madepenetrating other partsof the country easier for the terror groups. They felt that the collapse of road blocks across the country in this era of terror was a security miscalculation as the decision would encourage the movement of arms and ammunition and other weapons from one part of the country to the other. The security source stated that those behind the acts of terror could have easily taken advantage of the loose security situation in the South-West to launch similar attacks in thezone from the Sabo settlements being inhabited chiefly by northern Muslims. Top police personalities confirmed that police authorities were aware of the plot. However, the Force Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, was evasive as he refused to comment on what he described as a sensitive security issue. Security experts opine that these attacks by the groups are part of measures to protest Nigeria’s intervention in the Malian crisis. Ansaru had on January 19, 2013 claimed responsibility for an attack on Malian-bound Nigerian soldiers near Okene, Kogi State. In the statement they issued, the leader, Uba Usamatal Ansary warned Nigerians and other Africans to be ready for ‘more difficulties’ as they embarked on the mission to restore peaceto Mali. The statement had read, “We, members of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis-Sudan, are gladly informing the general public, especially those in black Africa, that with the aid and guidance of Allah, we, on January 19, 2013 at Itape, Ekehi Local Government Area ofKogi State, successfully executed our first attempt in attacking the Nigerian troops that were aiming to demolish the Islamic Empire of Mali. “We are equipped and waiting for any slightest attempt of Nigerian Army moving towards the Islamic Empire of Mali. And we arewarning African countries to stop helping Western countries in fighting against Islam and Muslims; if not, we are sternly assuring them, particularly the Nigerian government, tobe prepared and be ready to face difficulties from JAMBS anywhere and anytime. May Allah help us and grant our wishes.” SOURCE- www.informationnaija.com/boko-haram-ready-to-bomb-lagosibadan-and-abeokuta/ |

It’s confirmed! After months of denial and hiding, R&B-Pop singer Tiwa Savage and her manager Tunji ‘Tee Billz’ are now officially engaged! Tee Billz made a formal proposal to Tiwa Savage on February 5, 2013, her birthday, andjust nine days before Valentine’s Day. The romantic moment was witnessed by a few celebrity friends, including Tiwa’s Mavin Records boss Don Jazzy, Dr SID, Banky W, BeatFM Personality Toolz and several others. The pair had consistently denied the relationship, and when marriage rumours surfaced weeks ago, their denials became even more vehement. But the past few days proved they had gotten tired of living a lie, with photos and tweets from Lagos and Dubai confirming what they’d been trying to hide. ‘I am not engaged and I am not dating Tee Billz. If I am, you would have seen a ring on myfinger indicating that I am engaged. It’s just a rumour ’, she told Encomium in December 2012. But the rumours re-emerged when the pair flew to Dubai and checked into the luxurious Burj Al Arab Hotel , spending time together, taking boat cruises and seemingly enjoying a luxury couples vacation. Sources even suggested that Tiwa and Mr Balogun had gotten married, and that the Dubai trip was their honeymoon. On the morning of February 5th, 2013, Tiwa’s 34th birthday, Tee Billz reportedly updated hisBlackBerry Messenger status to ’ Happy birthday Mrs Billz. ‘ Tiwa also posted two cakes on her Instagram page. The inscription on the first cake read ‘ Happy birthday Mrs Billz ‘. ‘ The power to deny their relationship grows weaker by the day, they are really in love with each other’ , a source close to the couple told us. ‘Now that they have announced their status to everyone, the tension will cease.’ Congrats guys!
