Ethiopian-American Nasa research engineer Berhanu Bulcha is aiming to find a solution to the problem of locating water on the moon, to help humans set up a permanent base there.

Without water there can be no life.

Whether humans are on the Earth or elsewhere in the universe, that axiom remains the same.

Nasa's Artemis 1 rocket was finally launched this week - the start of an ambitious space exploration programme that is designed to take humans back to the moon and beyond.

Addressing the issue of how to get hold of water beyond Earth is crucial. The lunar base being planned would be impossible without the precious liquid and Dr Berhanu is leading a team working on how it could be found on our planet's only natural satellite.
Water can be transported from Earth but this is expensive and highly inefficient. Significantly lunar water could also be used to make rocket fuel, allowing the moon to be a platform for further space travel, which would bypass the need for the huge rockets required to overcome our planet's gravitational pull.

'Million-dollar question'

Dr Berhanu and his team are developing a prototype light-weight compact spectrometer that could definitively identify where water reserves are on the moon.

"It's the million-dollar question," he tells the BBC by phone from one of Nasa's offices in the US.

Since getting to graduate school at the University of Virginia 12 years ago, Dr Berhanu has been focussing on developing space instruments that would solve problems for Nasa - and arguably the search for water is the biggest problem of all.

The presence of some water on the moon has already been confirmed. But the issue with most methods of detection is that they cannot tell the difference between water, which is made up of hydrogen and oxygen, and hydroxyl, another hydrogen-containing compound.
The device assisted by the laser that Dr Berhanu is working on emits particles of light at a frequency specific to water, which can be used to pinpoint its presence.

His team is developing what are called quantum cascade lasers to reach this frequency that has been hard to achieve in the past, Nasa's news service reports.

Dr Berhanu describes it as a novel technological development that will enable astronauts to use a hand-held device to find both the location and volume of water - something which has not been achieved before.

The tiny instrument could also be deployed on a remotely operated rover. Reducing the size and weight of any objects designed to go on a lunar mission is crucial as space is at a premium.

Asiwaju Tinubu was the one who got Lagos State to be part of the owners of Econet and unlike Delta State where the shares were sold and funds pocketed, Lagos State Shares were warehoused with professional investors in the state investment agency called Ibile holdings.

Asiwaju Tinubu increased bursaries to students of Lagos State origin (NULASS) and made public schools free for all Lagosians regardless of your tribe, religion or political party affiliation after his administration had successfully returned missionary schools to their original owners( other states later copied Lagos) . It was during his tenure that Ikeja General Hospital became a teaching Hospital, upgraded most of the clinics to General Hospitals giving free health to the 5 years and below and Lagosians of 65 years and above age group. .

The fund that BRF used to quickly build infrastructures were the LGA funds withheld by Pa Obasanjo and despite that Asiwaju Tinubu never owed salaries.
When the purchase of FG refineries by Alhaji Dangote was cancelled by HE Yardua, Alhaji Aliko Dangote ran to Asiwaju Tinubu after most state governments and governors in the SS gave Dangote a cold shoulder. Today, through the assistance Asiwaju Tinubu gave Aliko Dangote, Dangote Refinery is taking off to help us stop the petrol subsidy killing our naira and public finances.


Asiwaju Tinubu is loyal to those who paid the ultimate price for our democracy and today heroes like Bagauda Kalto, Pa Alfred Rewane, Pa Abraham Adesanya etc are immortalized in Lagos . One of the most memorable achievements of Asiwaju Tinubu for me was helping to stop the blood letting and recurring Hausa-Yoruba/OPC war in Idi Araba and Agege. Those hellish period of unrest defied even the effort of past military state administrators of Lagos but Asiwaju Tinubu was able to solve it.

That Lagos State Government civil service is regarded as the best in Nigeria is due to the hardwork Asiwaju Tinubu did to reform it, create Tutors General offices, improved harmonized pay structure, best pension scheme for civil servants etc.

Interesting. I am also an AI enthusiast and my interest is on the Microcontroller programming (TinyML). Interestingly I don’t like Pytorch, I use Tensorflow for deep leaning and neural network. I’m currently working a traffic light(Computer Vision) model to be deployed to PyBoard and Arduino.

I want to go into electronic programming too. Though have started with Arduino using c/c++. I also want to use raspberry pii and pyboard. My only challenge now is I don't have any knowledge about electronic but I'll learn it as soon as am able to have a source of income.

The pledge by Ugandan animator Hamid Ibrahim to the BBC that his team's work is "going to kick Disney's ass" certainly got the company's attention.

Two years on and Disney - instead of battling Ibrahim and his colleagues - has announced a collaboration.

It is the first time that it will work with African storytellers to create an animated series set on the continent.

Iwájú will be a long-form series "steeped in science fiction" based in a futuristic Lagos, Nigeria, Disney says.

Ibrahim, along with Nigerians Ziki Nelson and Tolu Olowofoyeku, created the company Kugali to tell "stories inspired by African culture using comic books, art and augmented reality", according to their website.

"This show will combine Disney's magic and animation expertise with Kugali's fire and storytelling authenticity," Nelson said.

They work in the Afrofuturism genre, referencing African history and tradition, which in part tries to address the absence of Africans within mainstream science fiction.

"The idea was that in science fiction there were hardly any black people - it was as though they were passing on the message that there are no black people in the future," Nelson told the BBC in 2019.

Now, with the Disney collaboration, he says that "Iwájú [which means "the future" in the Yoruba language] represents a personal childhood dream of mine to tell my story and that of my people".

Though at this stage the creators are not giving anything away about the plot, Disney says the series will explore "deep themes of class, innocence and challenging the status quo".

Walt Disney Animation Studios' chief creative officer Jennifer Lee said it was the BBC's short film about Kugali that caught her attention, entertainment website Deadline reports.

She said she was intrigued by Ibrahim's "ass-kicking" comment.

"Here were three talented comic book artists. Their dream was to bring African stories created by African artist to the world, highlighting the diversity of cultures, histories and voices across the continent," she is quoted as saying.

"Their talents as storytellers blew us away."

Disney says that not only will this be the first time one of its projects will be set in an Africa "that is envisioned and told by filmmakers from the region", but it is also the first collaboration with another creative company "to bring a project to fruition".
