Igbos have suffered in the hands of the northerners more than any tribe in the country, one thing everybody should always have in mind is that no tribe has monopoly over violence. There are a lot of Northerners in the eastern part of the country on which a reprisal could be aimed at but the Igbo are peace loving people but i know if they are pushed to the wall as it happened in 1999/2000, the rythm of the game might change but we dont pray for that. We want one Nigeria.
PoliticsJos Crises: Ndigbo Warn Against Fresh Attack by omamokta(op): 10:31am On Jan 18, 2011
NORTHERN Igbo traditional leaders have warned that their people are not afraid of war over the current happenings in Jos, Plateau State. They have, therefore, called on their kith and kin in the north to be prepared for any eventuality.
They stated this during a courtesy visit to the State Governor Jonah Jang ,who quickly appealed for calm and restraints as the Federal Government was doing everything possible to arrest all those who had been disturbing the peace in the state and other parts of the country.

The Eze Igbo One of Abuja and the Chairman of Igbo leaders in the 19 states and Abuja, Chief Ibe Nwosu, said he was making this position known because the Igbo had never caused any problem any where they are and wondered why they had consistently been targets of attacks?

He said: "We are not trouble makers, but any where trouble finds us, we must defend ourselves."

Chief Nwosu then advised the governor to always be in contact with the Igbo leadership in the state to find out their worries, saying that would assuage their hearts because "it?s a known fact that "Igbo are peaceful and don?t believe in war but business."

"We are not happy with what is going on in Plateau. All the 19 states and Abuja asked me to come here and say sorry on what is going on. We have lost 40 or there about and are Igbos," he said.

Responding, Governor Jang said: "Something serious is being done and people behind all this will not find a hiding place in this country."

According to him, "people must be prepared to defend themselves, it is only by this that attackers will be afraid and these nonsense will stop." He pleaded with Nigerians to be patient because no government would sit and fold its arms and watch lawlessness being perpetrated.

He said the Igbo nation had suffered more than any other region in this country, but regertted that it is not the right of anyone to take the live of another, "but the hoodlums are delibartaely trying to distabilize this country."

Atiku does not deserve to be our president, from his utterances lately, he has lost it. If he thinks he can rule Nigeria without the south, he should ve asked the late MKO what he said about the Igbos during the 1992/93 presidential elections. He should remember there are alot of ABN today. He should thread softly instead of setting the country on fire.

Hi NLanders, i ve been married to my wife for about six years now but my problem with her lies on my cousin we ve lived with for about three years. This girl (my Cousin) was in elementary 5 when she came but had to loose one year when she was registered in her new school but right now she is in jss2. My wife does not want to live her again cos she said she does not respect her and her siblings enough, i ve noticed that this complains intensifies whenever any of her sisters comes around. Of late, it has always been one fault or the other on the girl which i know are allegations to send the girl packing. She has gotten to the extent of blackmailing me of having intimacy.u.a.l relationships with my cousin because i do not beat her when she wants me to or scold her when she tells me to do that. How do i handle this cos if this girl goes, the home chores will be much for us to bear and will not send the right signal to my family cos this is the second person she is sending home in our six years marriage. I had advised her to get any of her relatives to stay with us instead of employing a househelp but she could not and that is how my cousin came to live with us. Now the girl will be going and the pressure will be on me cos i know my wife cannot cope with the chores at home alone and am a very busy person. I need your advices please

PoliticsBash Ali Takes Title Bout To Libya by omamokta(op): 2:31pm On Dec 16, 2010
AFTER making fruitless effort to see that his home country, Nigeria host the Guinness Book of World Record fight with American Bobby Gunn, World Boxing Federation, WBF Cruiserweight champion, Bashiru Lawrence Ali a.k.a Bash Ali has decided to take the fight to Libya.

Bash Ali, who is currently in Tripoli to have audience withPresident of Libya, Maummar Ghadaffi, said that the frustration he went through getting the Nigerian government picking up the bills of the fight, forced him to seek solace with Ghadaffi, whom he said has opened door for discussions on how the fight venue would be changed to Libya.

In a letter dated 2 November, Bash Ali wrote to the Libyan leader that "the Guinness Book of World Record fight has met all kinds of obstacles created by some top officials of the federal government in Nigeria who are bent on not seeing the bout coming to reality.

"George Foreman set the world record as the oldest boxer to win a world title in his country, America. Joe Bugner broke the world record in his country in Australia.

Help me make my dream a reality to rewrite boxing history as the oldest boxer to win a world boxing title in my continent Africa," he told Ghadaffi in the letter.

Bash Ali listed the gains of staging the fight in Libya to include the establishment of nine sports academies as promised by International

Boxing Union, IBU, unprecedented level of publicity because the historic fight will be watched live on Pay Per View television in 132 countries by over 10million people. This according to the Nigerian boxers would yield revenue of $500m.

"The 182 country members of IBU and the WBF would be in Libya to watchthe fight and they include not limited to former and current world boxingchampions like George Foreman, Mohammed Ali, Smoking Joe Frazier, Mike Tyson,Larry Holmes, Evander Holyfield, Ken Norton, Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns and Joe Bugner," he said.

Bash Ali concluded that he is soliciting the support of Ghadaffi to ensure that the fight is not taken out of Africa to America as the IBU and WBF are under intense pressure to get another venue for the fight if he fails to come up with a suitable venue before the year runs out.

Which party does this Audu Ogbe belong to? Last time he was among the nine "wise" men that nominated Atiku Abubakar as the consensus canidate of northern PDP, now he is the campaign Co-ordinator of Ribadu of ACN. These politicians are not to be trusted.
PoliticsRibadu Declares For Presidency, Momodu Quits Lp by omamokta(op): 12:35pm On Dec 16, 2010
THE former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, yesterday formally declared his intention to contest the 2011 presidential election on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

Declaring his ambition, Ribadu cited misgovernance as the main reason the country’s growth had remained stunted.

His views were corroborated by a former National Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Audu Ogbeh, who is now a chieftain of the ACN.

Also, presidential hopeful, Dele Momodu, has resigned his membership of the Labour Party (LP). Until Tuesday, he was the most prominent presidential aspirant on the platform of the Labour Party (LP).

In a letter addressed to the national chairman of LP, intimating the party of his resignation, Momodu said it was against the backdrop that the party has no plans to field a presidential candidate for the 2011 presidential election.

The Ovation Magazine publisher also based his decision on a recent media report (not in The Guardian), which claimed Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State was under pressure to dump LP for the ACN and also a media report in which the national chairman of LP, Dan Nwanyanwu, also foreclosed the possibility of the LP fielding a presidential candidate in the next election.
Ogbeh is the Director-General of the Ribadu for President Campaign Organisation.

Addressing his supporters at the Abuja International Conference Centre (ICC), Ribadu said that unless a leadership that was focused, selfless and disciplined was installed in the country, Nigeria will continue to be in search of good leadership.

According to him, Nigeria has another opportunity to lead in the quest for a meaningful change in terms of political and socio-economic development, adding that with the cooperation of all Nigerians, the stage will have been set for a dynamic society that will be the vanguard of efficient and effective utilisation of the huge endowment of natural and human resources of the African continent for rapid economic growth and development.

In an address entitled “A New Nigeria is possible,” Ribadu who was flanked by Ogbeh and his spouse, Zahra, said the first port of call in his vision of re-structuring the economy for development was the simple challenge of returning humility to government, adding that last year alone, Nigerian earned about N86 billion in revenue, the bulk of which went into imports that included some of the most exotic vanities that a developing nation like Nigeria should encourage.

“This is not a path to progress, because already we are running a scandalously shameful budget ratio where overhead is at a staggering 75 per cent of annual spending and where the 25 per cent balance is disappearing through the notorious corruption chute. Therefore the pervasive poverty in Nigeria can be attributed to the inefficient utilisation of our abundant resources, characterised by poor leadership, gross mismanagement, nepotism and most insidiously, corruption.

“Poverty reduction, therefore, will be an underlying factor in addressing the challenges of development in the 21st century. The structures and institutions that underpin the economic development would be thoroughly overhauled starting with the development of human capital, knowledgeable, healthy, creative and hard working people that will be the pivot for the new Nigeria.”

He identified quality and efficient health care system, functional education, viable economic policies as well as the creation of jobs for the people, especially the teeming youths as some of the agenda that would be pursued by his administration if voted into power. He added: “We shall budget within our means, reduce poverty, reduce over-spending and plan for a steady and attainable economic rate of 7 to 8 per cent for the next five years and 8 to 10 per cent per year for the years following that.”

He added, “we will invest in infrastructure, in health and education, and in creating an enabling environment for thriving investment in all key sources of growth and development, namely agriculture, the extractive industry, manufacturing, financial services, information and communication technology (ICT), arts and culture as well as housing construction. We believe that these sectors hold the true key to genuine economic recovery.

“To give a just instance, while the current housing crisis requires investment in 16 million houses, a smart annual investment in one million houses could yield 30 million jobs. But these measures cannot be attained without adequate supply of electricity.”

He said Nigeria has a private sector that is capable of great enterprise, adding that there is need to streamline the process that will tend to escalate the cost of doing business in the country.

“We will also minimise the time required to start a small business.
“In doing all these, we must be mindful of the fact that that governance is about people, it is about their wellbeing. Our conduct as both public officers and captains of industry must be such that will support the wellbeing of our people.

“To this end, we must fight every form of corruption and ensure that our struggle enjoys the full benefits of our natural resources. Our processes and transactions must be transparent in order to inspire confidence and we will empower the anti-corruption agencies to effectively discharge their mandates.”

Kai! wetin dey happen to this governor? The other day it was a shouting match between him and Nwodo, today his christmas gift was rejected. I hope this guy will not be denied the ticket. I want him to continue cos he is doing a great job in Enugu. Up Sullivan!
PoliticsDrama As Enugu Rec Rejects Chime’s Gift by omamokta(op): 12:19pm On Dec 16, 2010
THERE was drama in Enugu yesterday as the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Enugu State, Mr. Josiah Uwazuruonye, turned down the Christmas gifts sent to the premises of the Enugu office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from the Government House, Enugu, saying he did not need them to survive.

He said since the gifts were coming from an interested party (Governor Sullivan Chime) in the elections in which INEC will play the role of an umpire, it would amount to compromising the integrity and credibility of the commission to accept such gifts now that the new INEC has vowed to live up to expectations of Nigerians in the next year’s elections.

We gathered that the gift items included four cows, about fifty bags of rice, cartons of tin tomatoes and wine and that they were delivered to the INEC office on Tuesday evening by protocol officers.

Sources hinted yesterday that Uwazuruonye was not comfortable with the gesture when he was informed about it and promptly ordered the government officials to take the items away from the premises of the commission.

When the news of the mild drama made the round yesterday and newsmen made inquiries, the Resident Electoral Commissioner had said nothing happened but later spoke , saying he did not need such gifts to do his work, especially when it was coming from an interested party in the crucial elections next year.

He further clarified that it is an offence for anyone working in the commission to receive such gesture when elections are drawing near.

His words: “I rejected the gifts because I don’t require cow or any other gift from the governor or any person to do my work. No matter how you look at it, whether it is offered in the spirit of the season or not, people will say you have been compromised, that you have been bribed.

“Beyond that, however, I want to say that it is very wrong of the government to do so, especially knowing the situation of our politics, which the present INEC is trying to salvage.

“If it were in the military regime when you receive such a thing, you will be said to have entered a treaty but now, such gifts will earn you disqualification,” he stated.

PoliticsPresidential Race: Ibb, Atiku Threaten Jonathan by omamokta(op): 11:48am On Dec 16, 2010
AFRAID of President Goodluck Jonathan's rising profile in the build-up to the 2011 general elections, two of his major challengers declared yesterday their intention to stop him at all cost.

Former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), and erstwhile Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant, vowed that if Jonathan made peaceful transition impossible, he should be prepared for the inevitability of violent change.

Babangida said: “Any attempt to disrupt zoning arrangement portends ominous prospects to the electoral fortunes of the PDP and also endangers orderly political transition in the nation.”

The two presidential aspirants spoke at the National Stakeholders Conference organised by the Adamu Ciroma-led Northern Political Leaders Forum yesterday in Abuja.

The event, chaired by Babangida, was to drum up support for Atiku in the South.

Atiku added that if the ruling PDP would not embrace reforms; it would stand the risk of becoming irrelevant in the scheme of things in 2011.

But the Senate President, in the aborted third Republic, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, called on the South to forget the historical part of the country in the 60s, when the nation was ruled by military regime headed by Northerners in successions. He described it as accidental.

Atiku, who insisted that he was the instrument for realising the value of consensus building, rule of law and due process, promised that he would bring the country back to the path of honour.

His words: “Our coming here is not about Atiku, it is about the peace, the unity and stability of Nigeria as exemplified by all the speakers who spoke to this audience today. Today is about building consensus for national unity. We heard some elder statesmen on consensus building. It is about the rule of law, due process and standing for what is right. I am an instrument for realising these values. I promise that by the grace of almighty God, we shall bring this country back to the part of honour.

“Before I end this short address, let me send a message to our great party the PDP: if the PDP does not reform, it stands the risk of making itself irrelevant. Let me again send another message to the leadership of this nation, particularly the political leadership that those who make peaceful changes impossible make violent changes inevitable.”

Ayu said: “We are trying to tell you that we have difficult task ahead of us. If you are not present here today, the consensus effort would have been a failure. But with your presence here today, Atiku ceases to be the Northern Consensus Candidate but the Consensus Candidate of Nigeria. North is not set out to dominate anybody. I want you to ignore the Nigerian history of 60s that produced coups and counter-coups with its leaders as Northerners. It was not conspiratorial on the part of the Northern political leaders, it was accidental.

“When we had opportunity, we not only brought out President Obasanjo, who was in prison for treason, but the North made him president, even when his immediate community rejected him. It was highest show of solidarity by the North. The least our brothers from the South can do is to demonstrate and reciprocate the goodwill.”

Babangida, in his own remark, said: “The representatives of the various sections and groupings of this nation are gathered here to chart out a framework for the resolution of certain challenges facing our country today. This gathering, therefore, is not only a tribute to national unity, but also an open admission that we confront challenges as one nation, and resolve them as a single indivisible entity.

“National unity is the fundamental value which brings all of us together at this event. The history of this country provides a constant reminder that we can only disregard the issue of national unity at the risk of very horrific and tragic consequences.

“It is, therefore lamentable, to say the least, that some actors in the ongoing political process in the country are not only trying to put the question of national unity in the back burner; but are actively trying to undermine it by jettisoning measures that are deliberately designed to promote and guarantee it.

“At the risk of sounding repetitive, I would still draw your attention to the fact that our principled insistence on the issue of zoning and rotation of power between the component parts of this country is in long term interest of this country and its people.

“In our deliberations today, I want to urge all of us to keep at the back of our minds the fact that the issue of zoning and rotation of power is beyond the Northern part of Nigeria; it is certainly beyond the Peoples Democratic Party as a political party. It is simply a national challenge to come up with an arrangement that guarantees to all sections of this country a sense of belonging.

“The critical balancing fulcrum sustaining that arrangement is the principle of zoning and rotation of public and party offices. This is, without any doubt, what is responsible for the remarkable successes that the party was able to register in successive elections in the country.

“It is important at this juncture to remind all of us that when the PDP was formed, it was conceived as a big tent that would house the diverse sections, groupings and interests of this country in an amicable and orderly power sharing arrangement. The critical balancing fulcrum is the principle of zoning and rotation of public and party offices. This is, without any doubt, what is responsible for the remarkable successes that the party was able to register in successive elections in the country.

“Any attempt to disrupt this arrangement, therefore, portends ominous prospects to the electoral fortunes of the party, but more seriously endangers orderly political transition in the nation.

“The way I see it is that our task has now been clearly set; its organs and officials do what is right for the long term interest of the party and the long larger interest of our nation. To do otherwise is to send the message that we are not ready to abide by our own rules and cannot be trusted by the larger society to adhere to its own.

“This is one message we cannot afford to communicate to the people of this country upon who we depend to acquire political power; or indeed even to the larger international community.”

Roll call at the event included: former National Security Adviser, Lt-General Aliyu Gusau (rtd); former Senate President, Ken Nnamani; former PDP Youth Leader, Bibi Farouk; former Minister of Cooperation and Integration in Africa, Abimbola Ogunkelu; former Aviation Minister, Professor Babalola Borisade; former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Professor Charles Soludo; Professor Sam Oyobvare, and Hajia Chinyere Ogugua.

PoliticsParty Expels Abacha by omamokta(op): 1:51pm On Dec 14, 2010
The Kano State chapter of the Congress for Progressive Change has expelled one of its governorship aspirants, Mohammed Abacha, eldest son of the late military ruler Sani Abacha. Announcing his expulsion on Freedom Radio, Kano, the state secretary, Abdullahi Dalhatu Dankano, accused Mr. Abacha of allegedly engineering a protest against the party's officials over the outcome of the ward congress held last weekend. He alleged that Mr. Abacha's activities in recent time were undermining the chances of the party at the forthcoming polls and that the party had no other option but to expel him from the party before he wrecked the fortunes of the party. Mr. Abacha's expulsion comes barely three months after he dumped the Peoples Democratic Party over what he described as the highhandedness of former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in running the affairs of the party. In a swift reaction, Mr. Abacha's media campaign head, Ibrahim Ado Gwagwarwa, dismissed the purported expulsion, saying it was simply the display of desperation and recklessness. He added that the expulsion remained null and void, saying that the officer who made the announcement did not have the mandate to do so.

Party brawl

In a similar development, Buba Galadima, a member of the board of trustees of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) yesterday announced the dissolution of all the executive committee members of the party nationwide, with effect from Saturday. He disclosed that the decision followed reports received by party officials indicating that the party's ward congress was marred by irregularities nationwide. Mr. Galadima said the party stands for justice and as such, all members of the party should be rest assured that none of them would be marginalized, stressing that all members would be given equal opportunities, irrespective of their status in the society. He said that the ward congress failed to hold in Bauchi, Katsina, Delta, Niger, Nasarawa and Jigawa states due to unforeseen circumstances beyond the control of the party, claiming that the leadership of the party in the states failed to comply with the rules and regulations, guiding the conduct of the ward congress. He, however, added that the party's national leadership has summoned an emergency meeting slated for Monday in Abuja to deliberate on the disputed ward congress, as well as resolve the thorny issues at stake and restore the party's credibility, integrity and the public's confidence. Meanwhile, the Kano State secretariat of the Congress for Progressive Change has been sealed by armed mobile police officer over threats by angry youth to set the premises ablaze, after the party's first ward congress in the state last weekend which was allegedly marred by irregularities.

PoliticsIbb Threatens To Quit Pdp by omamokta(op): 11:17am On Dec 08, 2010
Former military president Ibrahim Babangida has written to the national secretariat of the PDP threatening to quit the party unless it abides by the power rotation formula in deference to last week’s court judgement that said the policy was binding.

In a letter to national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo yesterday, Babangida said the party’s national executive committee was duty bound to respect the court and enforce the zoning policy. This would mean stopping President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid and allowing only Northerners to seek its presidential ticket for next year’s elections.

An FCT high court, headed by Chief Judge Justice Lawal Gummi, last week ruled in a case brought before it by a presidential aspirant, Sani Aminu Dutsinma, that the provision for power rotation in the PDP constitution was binding, though the court stopped short of asking the party to enforce the policy. The PDP leadership said the ruling was in line with its resolve to retain the policy but allow President Jonathan to seek nomination.

“If the Party has become so helpless in the face of these gross violations of its own constitution by its officers and its highest elected representative, then many of us shall have no alternative but to reconsider our continued membership of the Party,” Babangida said in the letter to Nwodo, a copy of which was circulated to newsmen.

Section 7.2(c) of the PDP constitution says the party “shall adhere to the policy of rotation and zoning of party and public elective offices and it shall be enforced by the appropriate executive committee at all levels.” The FCT high court said though this means the policy remained binding on the party, the court lacked powers to enforce it.

Babangida told Nwodo and the PDP National Executive Committee to enforce the policy, in deference to the court judgement.

“I urge the National Executive Committee of the Party to enforce the constitution of the party in its totality in the forthcoming election. To do otherwise is to condone this attempt at a gross and deliberate violation of the constitution of the party.

“To do otherwise is tantamount to a declaration that the National Executive Committee of the Party rejects the principles of equity, justice and fairness enshrined in the PDP constitution. It means that they reject the policy of rotation and zoning of party and public elective offices and that they are not prepared to enforce it in so far as it relates to the office of President.

“It means that they are opposed to the creation of socio-political conditions conducive to natural peace and unity by ensuring fair and equitable distribution of resources and opportunities.

“It simply means that they reject and are therefore not prepared to conform to the principles of power shift and power sharing by rotating key political offices amongst the diverse peoples of our country and devolving powers equitably between the Federal, State and Local Governments in the spirit of federation,” he said.

Lets wait and watch, it seems they are heading somewhere. When the whole mysteries are unearthed, the world will know the truth.
PoliticsHow Okah Organised Abuja, Warri Bombings, By Sss by omamokta(op): 11:12am On Nov 11, 2010
NIGERIANS were yesterday told by the State Security Service (SSS) how the Leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger-Delta (MEND), Henry Okah, used the same set of people in the March 15, 2010 bombing in Warri, and that of Abuja on October 1.
According to the SSS, more suspects have been arrested in connection with the Independence Day bombing in Abuja.
The agency further affirmed that the original destination of the arms seized at the Apapa Wharf, in Lagos, last month, was Nigeria.
Marilyn Ogar, the agency’s spokesperson, told reporters in Abuja that those who sold the car used in the Abuja bombing have been arrested.
She added that the artisan who welded the compartments where the bombs were kept had also been arrested.
Ogar said: “Further investigations into the October 1 bombing in Abuja revealed that the car dealers at Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, have been held.”
The security agents have also found the receipt of the car purchase; the welding of the components was said to have been done at the Apapa, Lagos residence of Henry’s younger brother, Charles, from where they were moved to Port-Harcourt, where the explosives were wired, before they were taken to Abuja.
Ogar added: “On the Warri bombing of March 15, 2010, the perpetrators have also been arrested. They are the same people used by Henry Okah to execute the October 1, 2010 bombings. It has been uncovered that Henry Okah came from South Africa for Warri bombings, purchased the cars which were then moved to the house of one of the suspects on March 13, where he personally wired the bombs. Subsequently, on March 14, 2010, Okah departed the country, apparently to create an alibi for himself over the bombings that eventually took place the next day.”
Ogar also gave update on the arms seizure at Tin Can Island Port in Lagos. According to her it would be a blatant lie for anybody to say that the ship that brought the arms mistakenly came into the country.
She said: “The Service has been monitoring the movement of the illegal cargo before it entered the country. The ship that carried the cargo arrived Tin Can port on July 10, 2010 with 371 containers, from which 83 were discharged at the Frano bonded warehouse, Cele-Ijesha area of Lagos. The said ship departed on July 1, 2010.
“On the October 20, 2010, 13 containers out of the 83 were moved from Frano to AP Molar terminal, Apapa port, where Service personnel requested for 100 per cent inspection of the containers. The bill of lading read, building materials comprising Glass-wood and pallets of stones with destination as Nigeria, hence any argument that the cargo came into this country by mistake is false. Presently, the consignee and the clearing agent are under arrest.”

As the nation awaits the release of the investigation into the air crash that claimed the lives of 160 officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces who perished in the ill fated C-130 plane in Ejigbo, Lagos 18 years ago, Federal Government has promised to ensure that all the entitlements and death benefits due to the widows and children of the deceased are paid.
The Minister of Defence, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode gave this assurance yesterday during the inspection visit to the new permanent site of the Military Pension Board (MPB) to ensure that it meets the required standard ahead of its Commissioning by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Kayode maintained that the lingering issue of the outstanding pension and gratuity due to the widows and families of the 160 military officers and personnel who perished on September 26, 1992 will be resolved.
It could be recalled that following inaction on the part of the Federal Government to comply with the Terms and Conditions of Service Nigerian Army Officers 1984 for Pensions, Gratuities and other Benefits to Dependants of Officers and Men who died on active service, the widows of the 160 Officers and men in 2000 petitioned the Human Rights Violation Investigation Commission chaired by Justice Oputa in a petition No. HRVIC/725 of June 29, 2001, where they entered into an Memorandum of Understanding with the Defence Headquarters to seek for an amicable settlement of the dispute.

“I have requested for the file which is already on my table, and I assure you that for these widows; we will right the wrongs that have been done to them”, he said.
The Defence Minister reiterated that the issued will be resolved and added that the Federal Government is committed to the welfare of pensioners who has faced difficult times accessing their pensions.
He said that President Goodluck Jonathan has been very active concerning the welfare of the Nigerian workers especially the retired ones, and are working at harmonisation of all pension and arrears.

“Since Mr. President came to office, he has been proactive about all issues concerning welfare of the Nigerian workers especially the retired ones. So he is not joking about anything concerning pensions. Few months ago he paid all the arrears and now he is working towards harmonisation of pension”, he said.
Also speaking, the Chairman, Military Pensions Board, Brigadier General Bitrus Kwaji, said that the permanent site will provide a one stop shop for all pensioners, adding that “their problems will be solved in a matter of minutes”.

“In our former site, we use to have a lot of challenges in terms of documentation because some of our files are still in Lagos”, Bitrus explained.
He said that the new permanent site of the Military Pension Board is expected to be commissioned by President Goodluck Jonathan next week Friday, November 19, 2010.
