A Nigerian hacker, Obinna Obioha, 31 years of age, has pleaded guilty to wire fraud and admitted to participating in a scheme to hack into computers and email accounts in the United States for the purpose of stealing money from American companies.

The announcement was made by United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian and Vadim D. Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of the Albany Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

As part of his guilty plea, Obioha admitted that, while in Nigeria, he worked with others to hack into computers and email accounts used by dozens of victims in the United States and around the world.

After monitoring victims’ information to identify imminent commercial transactions, Obioha and his associates created knockoff email addresses that appeared similar to – but varied slightly from – victims’ legitimate email addresses.

Obioha and his associates then used those bogus email accounts to send fraudulent invoices to victims, instructing them to wire funds to bank accounts controlled by Obioha and his associates, under the pretense that the wires were payments for actual deals that had been previously negotiated by the victims.

Obioha admitted that between January and September 2016, he was involved in at least 50 wire transfers, and that about $6.5 million was sent to the bank accounts that he and his associates controlled. The accounts received money from fraud victims in New York, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, and Texas, among other places.

Obioha was arrested on October 6, 2016, after flying from Lagos, Nigeria, to JFK International Airport. He has been in custody since that time.

United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian said: “Foreign criminal enterprises prey upon American businesses and are using increasingly sophisticated means to do so, as demonstrated by this scheme. Obioha’s apprehension and conviction is a reminder that foreign nationals targeting American businesses cannot operate with impunity and that the reach of U.S. law enforcement agencies is global.”

“The FBI plays the long game,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge Vadim D. Thomas. “Today’s plea is proof that no matter how distant justice may seem, no matter where criminal enterprises may operate, the FBI and our law enforcement partners are committed to securing justice for our businesses and communities.”

Obioha faces up to 20 years in prison and a maximum $250,000 fine, as well as the possibility of being ordered to pay restitution, when he is sentenced on July 26, 2017 by United States District Judge David N. Hurd. A defendant’s sentence is imposed by a judge based on the particular statute the defendant is charged with violating, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Wayne A. Myers.

Education / Nigeria's First Unified School Portal And School Management System! by OmniPotens(m): 9:18am On Dec 14, 2015
Following the recent move by President Buhari to unify the various Nigeria databases like the Banks, Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, etc, 2Logics, a Lagos based Web development agency have taken out some painstaking time to come up with a solution to aid the unification of the Nigerian Schools and improve on the quality of educational services. It is ePortal.NG (www.eportal.ng).

What is ePortal.NG?
ePortal.NG is a full scale unified School portal / management and Administrative system supporting from K-12 to Higher education needs. With her user friendly interface and easy to use but powerful functionality loaded, Student, Parents and School management have become fun and a lot easier for every level of School administration.

Basic Features currently available on the ePortal.NG
School Management
Students registration and management
Courses management
Classes management
Subjects management
Academic calendar management,
Fees management, etc

Records Management
Students profile and record management
Teachers profile and record management
Parents record management
Supporting and Administrative staff management
Resources management

Alerts System
Text Messages
Email Messages
Newsletters

Grading and Grades Management
Flexible grading system is present to allow Schools setup as many grade scales as possible to manage their students scores. This enables the automatic grading of Students scores at the end of the semester/term. Different grade scale can manage different sessions, classes, courses, term/semester, etc.

Reports
In few clicks, you are able to generate different reports on different modules on various result sets in different formats and export them equally for offline study. ePortal.NG seeks to make life very easy managing your school and her activities.

Report Cards
Very intuitive and comprehensive report card template that helps Parents and Guardians know how good or bad their wards are performing on every subject. Our comprehensive report card gives Parents a clear view on what actions are needed to help their wards improve on subjects they are performing bad at.

More features are coming on board from time to time as the development team is on an endless mission to help improve Nigeria's education technologically because it is about Education Technology in recent times.

Some days back, the development team hosted a chat session to answer questions about their technology. Here is a link to that discussion https://eportal.ng/post/what-is-eportal-ng-and-of-what-relevance-is-it-in-nigeria-education

Looking at this project, it is becoming clearer that Nigerian developers are really taking their technologies to higher levels of supporting and improving on the quality of services rendered by the different sectors. ePortal.NG is really a promising technology that would aid Nigeria educational sector in various ways.

You can view the project to see what they have https://www.eportal.ng

What are your views?

Education / What Is Eportal.ng And Of What Relevance Is It In Nigeria Education? by OmniPotens(m): 3:02pm On Dec 02, 2015
Check this out!!!
===============
Today, we are happy to come live and answer any questions about our application and discuss about its future in Nigeria education if it gains the acceptance by Nigerian schools.

ePortal.NG has been developed to ease the stress of School management by providing schools with many administrative modules for faster execution of their daily tasks. Teachers get to work lesser calculating and computing scores. The result module has simplified this process, saving lots of time and stress for Teachers and making them concentrate on other school works. Good part of all these is that schools don't get to pay for all these services. They even request for more missing features and get them added to the portal to aid make works easier; all at a ZERO cost.

Students have a lot to benefit from ePortal.NG in the long run because academic records keeping is serious business for those who understand what is at stake. Imagine a scenario whereby you need to travel for hours, stand in queues, pay extra money just to get an old missing result, how sad do you feel about those many stresses? How about losing your school file to natural disasters, either you, your school or both, how do you go about making up for those paper records gone or saved locally on destroyed storage drives? Look into the future... Have you at any point been asked for your school records verification either by your employer, embassy, new school, etc, how difficult has it been having to travel to get missing results you don't instantly have access to? ePortal.NG is just right beside you to cut short or off all these kind of stresses. All your school records from all schools are at once place. You just need login to your account, print or download any records stress-free. With our upcoming Students-only portal, connecting and sharing resources with other students on board will create a whole new world of opportunities for every student of participating schools. There are a whole lot yet to come that we don't need put out here at this time.

Parents are not left out of this. They don't need to worry about getting updates from school about recent happenings. Schools use the alert system to push out updates to them. Students sometimes tend to hide away their report cards from their Parents when they perform badly but with ePortal.NG, there are no lies about report cards. Even Schools will find it difficult to alter Students results because altering a single result affects the entire class result. Parents can now know the actual performances of their wards every term/semester and know what subjects they are needing more help at for a better performance next term/semester.

There are just a whole lot to gain from this innovation. Even the Government of Nigeria can tap in and achieve a lot using ePortal.NG especially now President Muhammadu Buhari is working towards harmonising as many Nigerian databases as possible. ePortal.NG has stepped up to make this possible, easier and more beneficial to everyone connected to education...

Excerpt from https://eportal.ng/post/what-is-eportal-ng-and-of-what-relevance-is-it-in-nigeria-education/

Let's go over and see what's new in our ecosystem and how better we can utilize the innovation and improve on our educational system.

Education / Should Parents Be Held Responsible For Their School-going Children's Discipline? by OmniPotens(m): 6:15pm On Sep 08, 2015
Now, I say that Parents Should NOT Be Held Responsible For Their School-going Children's Discipline Problem. I have my few reasons for this.

Children should develop their own Individual Responsibility earlier.
It should be so, because children should be taught to be less dependent to their parents and to other elders in such a way that they learn to behave by themselves. For a child, it is very common to commit mistakes. By this, parents should know how to resolve such situations and teach their children do the right thing. In this manner, children would be developing their responsibility.

Children usually have the attitude of Authority Aversion.
At this point, children usually don't listen to their parents. And so, we can see how parents are not responsible to their children's discipline problems in school but their children themselves are. I just want to point out here that these children are in a certain school to learn and to be educated. By it, I mean that children are the only one that should be held responsible for their own actions.

Failures can never be avoided.
We cannot expect parents to watch over their children all over the day. So, we can say the parents never should be held responsible for the reason that they are not always their for their children. Even though the parents are the one who knows the children best and the ones who taught and raised up their children but we can expect some parental responsibility failure at this time. We cannot assure every parents to be teaching every good attitude to their children.

And so, by these points it can be stated that Parents Should NOT Be Held Responsible For Their School-going Children's Discipline Problem.

Do you agree to this?

Education / Should Class Attendance Be Optional For University Students? by OmniPotens(m): 8:41am On Aug 04, 2015
This has been an issue to reckon with among Parents, Teachers and Students as to whether taking class attendance should be optional for university students. Many have reviewed this from their different views yet there seems to be no resolve around it and the question still lingers on with many diversified opinions being taken by different parties about it.

William Emmanuel Yu, a Teacher at the Ateneo de Manila argued that she doesn't bother checking attendance even though her University encourages it. Her reasons being:
1. They are not children anymore. They can decide for themselves. The earlier they start making life choices and owning up to it the better.
2. They (or their parents) are the ones paying for their tuition. So if they don't want to maximize their investment then it is their loss.
3. If they are disinterested or disruptive then better to keep them off my class and spare others from the distraction.
4. If they already know the material and can pass all the requisite exams and submissions then they deserve to spend their time on something else and not waste it on my lecturing something they already know.

James Gay argued that "If your aim is to get all of the students to learn the material and pass the exam then make attendance compulsory. If your aim is to prepare them for the real world and to make them grow up and take responsibility for themselves, don't make attendance compulsory".

Shikhar Agarwal in his argument stated:
- I certainly do not like text-book-only style of teaching and learning that is being done in universities. As a matter of fact, I hate this.
- I also understand that students have varied interests - drama, dance, sports and so on. And hence universities should not impose "education" on them.

I have no problem with optional attendance if the students use the time, that they get from missing classes, constructively in pursuit of their hobbies and interests. For e.g, a student may coach for tennis, may spend time with his band group, may practice coding instead of going to some class which he doesn't like (likeHukka) and so on. So, here I would say that the students are indeed mature enough.

But is this the reality?

In my experience, NO.

- Students spend a lot of time on social websites like Facebook, Twitter, Blackberry Messenger, etc. There is almost 100% time waste on these websites. I know its fun - my problem with this is it's either at the cost of missing classes or missing pursuing hobbies. Please note, for me Facebook-ing is not considered to be a hobby.
- Students spend a lot of time watching movies - Hostels LAN have probably all the movies under sun - of all types. They watch these till early morning, and then sleep during the class hours.
- LAN Gaming is also popular - Counter Strike, Dota, etc. Again this goes on all night.
- Hangover from (drunk) parties - There are so many occasions - birthdays, job placements, hostel winning in an inter-hostel competition, your party winning in intra-hostel politics and so on. These again go all night.

I have absolutely no problem with these - I have done almost everything, and these memories, during my undergraduate, form the best part of my life till now. The point I am trying to make is that the assumption being made by most of the answers is false - the students, IMHO, are not mature enough, and they should not be given an option of not attending classes. I fully agree with Betsy Megas when she says that the students should not be penalized if they are keeping up and missing occasionally.

Also if you say that "if the students are wasting their time, its their problem and they will suffer later", then I am not convinced - its the society's responsibility to see that the future generation makes good use of the time - train them to be more responsible, and then waive off the attendance.

I have no problem with optional attendance - but the students should be mature enough to use this policy constructively, and not to misuse it, which is more often than not, the case.

Over to you now reading this, what is your view on this issue, make class attendance optional for university studies or make it compulsory?

Education / Should Teachers Be Considered A Higher Degree Field, Such As Being A Doctor? by OmniPotens(m): 2:53pm On Jul 27, 2015
It surprises me and hurts me that Teachers are not seen as being as important as Doctors. I mean that a Doctor is only a Doctor because someone TAUGHT him how to be one. Teachers are the people that educate people and help them get somewhere in life.

I know that some Teachers are worse than others and yeah, everyone has heard about teachers that just assign homeworks and did not do much of anything else in the way of helping their students to learn. But generally teachers have a very important job, and like many know, they can change the life of their student by influencing him or her by introducing new subjects or helping that student find their passion in life.

A teacher changes whether a student drops out of school or grows to love the subject. All too often, students cite certain teachers as the reason an interest turned into a passion. In some countries, teachers are too often seen simply as jobs that have no real impact. Yet, we fail to see that like a Doctor who saves a life, or a Lawyer who avenges a life, a Teacher changes a life. More accurately, the rarely found good teacher changes lives; the average teacher who doesn't have the right skills to teach simply acts as an intermediary between the student and the textbook.

Teachers are greatly underrated and underpaid and I think things really need to change.

Having read a little about our views on this, what are your opinions with regards if "Teachers Should Be Considered A Higher Degree Field, Such As Being A Doctor or Lawyer"?

What are your reasons?
Education / Are Grades A Good Indicator Of A Person's Knowledge Of A Subject? by OmniPotens(m): 4:22pm On Jul 20, 2015
For ages, many hold on to this debate, establishing their many understanding and reasoning why Grades are or are not a good indicator of a person's knowledge of a subject. Students who perform well at examinations mostly agree that Grades are while poor performing Students bet to differ.

Looking deeper into these two categories of Students, one would recall that success in examinations might be as a result of answering well easy set examination questions, having a load of time scheduled to read and pass the examination, being able to memorize word-for-word what was taught and writing them to pass an examination, copying from others during examination, having access to the examination questions before the sitting, etc. What if there comes an odd to distract your studies, destabilize your memorization, causing your not sitting to write a paper, etc, thereby making you to score low grades; does it mean you have a poor knowledge of any of such failed subject(s)?

Many have argued and looked into this subject from the live application of the teachings of such subjects or courses and as funny as it might seem from their debates, Students with poor grades stand out in the live application(s) of the knowledge of these subjects. This further deepens this debate and passing it on to more generations to come. Where do we now stand in this matter? Agree or disagree? Doing away with grades entirely would likely make our Students grow weak in their studies as there would be no better way to ascertain their performances or understanding of a subject.

To our understanding,

Grades do not necessarily translate directly to intelligence, but they do generally represent a student's effort and consistency. A student who consistently gets good grades, at the very least, applies themselves to their school work, while a student that consistently gets poor grades either clearly does not understand material or does not put forth an appropriate effort. So grades must have some correlation to intelligence. There may be exceptions to this rule, but an intelligent student will generally understand the importance of good grades.

Knowledge and intelligence are not the same thing. Good grades does not imply a person knows a subject well but at least this person knows the material on the test/examination. The person may be intelligent but it has nothing to do with knowing the subject.

Not all grading systems are equal. Check through our different educational systems and you would find out that there are variants on what score benchmarks Schools set as their Fail/Pass grades. Doesn't this also have its own downsides on Students?

Many more points to elucidate here but we would like to know your views on this subject.
