The Switzerland model is a bottom up approach where autonomy at different levels define government administrative areas. However, when we are all working to fill up a purse in Abuja its a top to down approach and its bad for Africa. A town can have a mayor who oversee governance and he can be a member of the provincial /regional /state parliament who is there to fight not to get funding from the centre but to retain wealth leaving his/her community
Ok..seems like a nice concept.not bad though.

Southern Nigerians..be you Igbo, Yorubas, Ijaw, Itsekiri, Urhobo, Edo, Calabar etc..we all should be united..you cannot fight this people alone..united we stand and disunited we fall..the latter is the reason we have been oppressed by the northerners..let forget the past and think of how to come out of this oppressive system we have found ourselves. If Europe had held on to their various grievances toward Germany by now it wont be a strong and united region in the world today...let us forget the past and think of how to form an alliance and take ourselves out of this situation. i am talking to the youth..stop fighting yourself for your leaders are united when sharing your common wealth but will use tribalism to divide the you guys.

Thank you. When I wanted to reply you I saw please don't make racist or tribalistic comment in this section yet the mods don't enforce their rules. That moniker should have been banned and his destructive comments hidden.
Now on the subject matter I kind of have a different take. I am of the opinion that it's the failure of bad leadership and corruption that is the real problem and not the systems. This regional system they talk about was practiced by our forefathers it didn't stop the corruption. I remember vividly Kaduna Nzeogwu the organiser of the first coup say what led him to it was because the civilians were very corrupt. Okay, look at it this way, they said we shouldn't have federal roads, ask yourself what about the state roads? Are they better...what have the state governors done with whatever they get. Look at Bayelsa and Delta. The money that has gone through that place in the past 15 years is enough to turn those places to dubai if they had visionary leaders. So its not the system, it's the people. I agree the system might need some tweaking namely realigning states and more devolution of power to the states, Letting the Local Governments function well as they have been designed. The are virtually dead now because of State Government violating there autonomy. In short, the people need to change. We need a new consciousness and mentality that holds our leaders accountable and has a commitment to Good governance. My suggestion is this, Let them start from the 2014 Confab report and Implement it. This govt is a massive disappointment playing politics with it. At the very least, implement it or call your own and the nation can move forward. On the secessionists, those ones will be worse than even what they are complaining off if they ever get Power. The Corruption and Minority subjugation would be worse. We need a leadership that can implement the 2014 Confab.
You are right..the 2014 and national confab should be implemented but the some APC political elite took the confab as a PDP thing.. with true federalism, the state will not have who to blame for their lack of efficiency..now they seem to be under the cover of the federal govt as everything is expected to be done fine them as perceived by ordinary Nigerians..but now they will be held accountable independently for their deed..at this time,..any govt/state that choose no to development his province does it at his own risk as it will no way affect other state who chooses to develop.the effect will be brain drain and investment from their state to other region/state.

Oniovo, I'd be Frank with you, most states might not survive restructuring, contrary to the opinion of many. Ebonyi, though a state that prides itself in agriculture, would find it difficult to survive under a restructured Nigeria. The same goes for Enugu as coal won't be enough.

I would no doubt prefer a restructured Nigeria but the truth is that most states are not really ready. Some Northern states might not be able to survive on their own as well.
it will be enough if the government do not live ostentatious lifestyle. It will not be enough if it is oprated under current structure the state is operating...state parastal has to be restructured to fit the reality on ground..at least they will know that people cannot be appointment into govt office except there their job is really necessary..no room for bogus payment and allowance and lavish lifestyle of political officials and their family members..

I support those that argue that Nigeria should have 6 regions and even more importantly the constitution must acknowledge all the ethnic tribes in Nigeria, no matter their size..Each region would have resource control and would each have their own sub constitution designed along their ethnic practices i.e the north east could base their constitution on sharia if they so please. This regions would then create states along their sub ethnic leanings i.e The Yoruba region could create states such as ijebu, Egba .The South South could create ijaw and itshekiri states etc.with each of this states having representatives at the respective parliament of each region.
The federal level should be a parliamentary system headed by a prime minister who will function as head of government and a president as head of state and will also double as president of the Senate. The Federal government would only be largely concerned with foreign affairs coordination and defence, border security.
Education would be a joint affair between the regions and the federal government .
All items on the concurrent and the residual list would be handled by the regions with the power to devolve them to their respective states. This is my idea of an ideal Nigeria where the South will not feel threatened by the northern conservative attitude and each region would develop at its own determined pace free from external pressures and would even begin to adopt their own indigenous language as official languages in their respective domains and would adopt their own educational syllabi without fear of one religion over the other with minimal input from the federal level. Each contributing to the centeredness their own fair share.
If the whole north decide to introduce sharia to their region then what will happen to the indigenous minority Christians there..I believe the sharia law in the north should only apply to northern Muslims or state that decide to be controlled by it and this law should also apply to the rich and poor. All core Northern state should decide if they wish to be under the sharia law or not..no state should be force to do anythings.

What is important is to first of all understand our makeup, how we have been wired to function. In Africa we have affinity to the land, culture and our peculiar ways we organize our societies. You can't suppress that but rather look at how you can take advantage of that to create a country where each group will feel part of the country while taking ownership of their land, cultural values etc
Hmmm! that is a food for thought..so what do you suggest then?

Who da hell will want to restructure a country with 300 ethnic groups? You want to go back to something that failed 50 yrs ago. What your grandfather practiced that lead them to civil war. Only a foool, a useless person, a stupid person, and an eediot will repeat it.
We cannot go back to regionalism because it will increase ethnic tension. Awolowo, akintola, ahmadu bello and co would not advise you to practise it today. They all knew what they faced. There was hate, tribalism, nepotism in their time. No matter how you look at it, nothing will make nigeria better until we separate.
Regiionalism can ecxel in an indigenous country with less ethnic diversity. Those ones that are still shouting restructure are yet to face reality.
Restructure ko destruture ni.
Nonsense!!
Deedee..sometimes if you have nothing positive to say it better to just observe as a spectator..you did not even bring any suggestion on how to live together as Nigerians but to discredit people commendation and contribution toward a restructured Nigeria...yes our fathers did not do well when Nigeria practiced regionalism but that does not mean we will fail. That is why we have history.which we have certainly learnt from..now this time around the state will retain their positive ( which was not there in the 60s) and who ever cannot survive on their own can merge with another viable state in that same region..it a thing of choice and not by force...so every state will have to wear their thinking cap on how to generate income to their states and regions as a whole..what is your suggestion if restructuring is not the solution? that we split up? why split up if there is an option of restructuring to ascertain if a region can leave in peace with one another...

Every region should look inward JOOR... no more rubbing from Peter to pay Paul. 70% to regions and 30% to federal government is OK. The federal government can take care of the less wealthy regions.

Regional or state/County/local police is paramount.

The regions should be created by Tribes or closely related tribes. We should not make a mistake of lumping some less populated tribes with big ones else the oppression and marginalisation will continue. I am interested in all the Ijaws in one region.

The Federal government will only control the military, foreign affairs.

The national assembly should be unicameral and equal members from each state. We don't want some regions using their numbers to oppress others.

THESE ARE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR ONE NIGERIA. ELSE SEPARATION BECOMES INEVITABLE.

I AM READY TO CHAMPION THIS FOR MY PEOPLE.

A restructured Nigeria should not have more than 6 or 7 regions. We also need to look critically at how revenues will be shared between the regions and federal government. We have to structure the system in such a way that regions with less endowments won't be left behind. We are going to have a single currency and economy so, we can't afford an extremely rich region and an extremely poor one. A straight jacketed 70-30 or 50-50 proposal is not feasible and won't work. We need to find a way around this.

Issue of regional citizenship also needs to be discussed and agreed upon. Will all Nigerians have the rights to live anywhere in the country and do business without restrictions? Personally, I won't mind regions having the power to bounce some unruly fellows. grin

We should have a regional and federal police covering different areas of crime prevention. INEC should remain a federal body to conduct all elections in the country. Regional INEC is a no no as it will be abused by regional lords.

Representation at federal Parliament should not be based on equality of regions but on population. We should conduct a credible population census and delineate legislative constituencies based on population.
Nice one.To add to your comment..every state should do a credible census among their citizens especially permanent residence in their respective state.People from other state that are interested in relocating to that state must be registered with the local govt .They must take account of their presence for data purposes. All citizens of a particular state should be identified by their state name and not the ethnic group they are from..so that there would not be another form of ethnocentrism and marginalization within that state.all citizens of state must be given a sense of belonging.

2019: APC have betrayed Nigerians trust, they should prepare to handover to us- APDA

More than a year into the 2019 general election, newly registered party, Advanced Peoples Democratic Party (APDA) has signed a note of caution to ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to prepare relinquish to power to it.

This signal was given by the youths of the opposition party under the aegis of the Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance Youth Frontier (APDAYF), who contended that APC have betrayed the trust of Nigerians.

According to the youths in a statement jointly signed by the National Coordinator of the youth group, Comrade Inioribo Tamunotonye and the National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Sam-Najoma Awudu, they boasted that with the wide acceptance of APDA, the ruling party should not bother waste scarce resources to field any candidate during the 2019 General election.

“APDA was unveiled on June 5, on June 7, we received formal recognition from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and we got our certificate on June 16,” the statement reads.

“But if you enter the remotest part of Nigeria, you will hear and see people talking about the party, you will see people freely aligning with APDA as if we have been in existence since the beginning of this present democratic dispensation in 1999”.

The youths, who said no political party in the history of Nigeria has enjoyed the wide support it had garnered since it was unveiled, asserted that the party’s acceptance among Nigerians testified to the fact that it is the new hope of the people.

They also said the coming of the party has bolstered opposition in the country, as the people now have a viable alternative against the ruling APC.

“Before the coming of APDA, opposition in Nigeria was practically dead after the APC took power from the former ruling party, but today, Nigerians can boast of a viable opposition in APDA, a worthy alternative to the failed APC administration. In APDA Nigerians see a party they trust with their mandate to form government in 2019,” It noted.

“Having betrayed the trust of Nigerians, the only favor the ruling APC will offer the populace is to prepare their handover notes ahead of the 2019 General election so as to ease transfer of power to the APDA incoming government”.

“APDA is the only political party that has truly surrendered power in the hands of the people. APDA is the only political party in Nigeria that recognize that everyone irrespective of tribe, age, societal status or creed, is important in the Nigeria project”

“The youths being an important segment in Nigeria has constitutional provision of having a minimum of 25% slot in all party and public offices at every levels of the party and government formed by the party. This is unprecedented in the history of Nigeria”
“We call on fellow youths to take advantage of the APDA platform to actualise their noble ambitions of offering service to the nation”..

Na so APC take come make mouth tire..until we give then the power to rule but they couldn't do anything but to blame blame blame PDP for two years like sey them vote them in to come and give excuse...please APDA should not be telling us how they will come and dispose of APC from power they should rather orientate us on what their party stand for and what they intend to do for Nigerians when they get into office..do they support restructuring, will it be at their priority project when that are voted into office? or not..are they ready heal the land that is is full of injustice and oppression between the elite and the poor? are they ready to build institutions? and how do they intend to do that?...what are their ideology regarding membership ..is their party open to every tom dick and harry just like the way APC did...APC Lack principles and ideology and that is the problem they have..all the corrupt party members from PDP are now in thier party in other to avoid persecution..APC they could not say no..because they lack principles..so please we tired of parties telling us of how they will come and dethrone another party in power..we don't need that ..we need proof that APDA party have a solid foundation and a clear vision of what they intend to achieve if they are given the mantle of leadership..abeg make una pack go one corner for now jare. When we see wetin una party represent and we kon hear una manifesto then we will start to take your party seriously..for now we are still licking our wound from what we got ourselves into

Ask them to withdraw quit notice immediately; condemn herdsmen activities

LAGOS— Prominent leaders from the Southern part of the country, including retired generals, civil servants and activists from the South’s three geopolitical zones rallied yesterday, warning that the quit notice by Northern youths to the Igbo in Northern Nigeria would be taken as a declaration against all Southerners. Acting President Yemi Osinbajo (4TH R) Chairman, South East Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Eberechi Dick (4TH L) Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu (3RD R) with other Traditional Rulers from South East during a Consultative meeting aimed at promoting peace, as well as protecting lives and properties of all Nigerians at the Presidential Villa Abuja on Sunday The Southern leaders in a stern declaration called on the Northern youths to withdraw the ultimatum handed down to Igbo, warning that failure to do so, will be taken as an ultimatum to all people from Southern Nigeria to quit the North.

The leaders also handed down an ultimatum to the Federal Government to implement the report of the 2014 National Conference by October 1, 2017, noting that it will see to the complete transformation and restructuring of the country. The stern declarations by the Southern leaders came as Acting President Yemi Osinbajo in continuation of his troubleshooting missions averred before South-East Traditional Rulers that agitations for secession by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and the ultimatum issued to Ndigbo by a group of Northern youth groups broke the laws of the country. Also yesterday, top presidential aide, Senator Femi Ojudu revealed that the Presidency opted not to invite IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to the troubleshooting sessions because the government did not consider him an Igbo leader. Among the Southern leaders present at yesterday’s meeting were Chief Ayo Adebanjo, former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Alani Akinrinade (retd); former Chief of General Staff, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe (retd); President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo; his predecessor, Prof. Joe Irukwu, former director-general of the Nigeria Intelligence Agency, NIA, Chief Albert Horsfall, Senator Femi Okurounmu; Bassey Ewa-Henshaw and Koforowola Bucknor-Akerele. Also present were Dr. Okey Anueyiaya, Chief Sydney Dike, Chief Eric Ebeh, Dr. Walter Ofonagoro, Ogita Iyalla-Finnih, Dr. Kunle Olajide, Chief Mike Uwaka, Ahaji Abdulaziz Ude, Chief Goddy Uwazurike, Prof George Obiozor, Charles Odunukwe, Iyaze Ebigwe, Col. Tony Nyiam, Dr. Amos Akingba, Mr. Supo Shonibare, Chief Tokunbo Ajasin, Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga (rtd), and Chief Guy Ikokwu. In a communiqué read by Mr Yinka Odumakin, the Southern Leaders said the meeting became imperative, following the ultimatum given by the Northern youths to the people of the South East to vacate the north by October 1, 2017. The eminent leaders said they decided to forge a united front to avert the danger arising from the ultimatum. The communiqué, which was endorsed by Chief Adebanjo (South West), Ebitu Ukiwe (South East) and Albert Horsfall (South-South) warned that any attack against anybody from the South will be considered an attack against Southern Nigeria. The communiqué read:

“We the people of Southern Nigeria comprising South East, South West and South-South of Nigeria decided to come together to forge a common and formidable front and sustenance of sound principles of national development, equity, fairness, social justice and political emancipation. The meeting held against the backdrop of the ultimatum given by the Arewa youths to the people of South-East and by extension to all Southerners to vacate the north by October 1, 2017 and the refusal of the Nigerian state to activate the law against any of them, giving us the impression that these youths are not acting on their own but by the back of their establishment. “We consider the need to avert the impending danger arising from the ultimatum given by the Arewa youths. “We agreed that there is a growing demand by our people and other Nigerians to form a stronger federation in which principles and practice of true federalism are upheld. “We observe that the cry for self-determination will continue unabated and become much more stringent unless the Federal Government sincerely addresses the issues of restructuring of Nigeria. “We, therefore, resolve that we reject the attempt to reduce the current crisis in Nigeria, flowing from the unresolved nationality question to an Igbo and North affair. “The meeting, therefore, insists that any further discussion on this crisis should be between the entire South and the North of Nigeria.

The South-East is advised to consider any further meeting where the South-West and South-South are not involved as Southern Nigeria because the issues involved affect all of us. “We also demand that Arewa youths and their sponsors must withdraw the quit notice given to the people of the South-East as failure to do so, will be taken as an ultimatum given to the entire Southern Nigeria to quit their region and any attack against anybody from the South, will be considered an attack against Southern Nigeria. “We, therefore, advise the Federal Government to take seriously and live up to the primary responsibility of any government which is to protect the lives and property of every citizen of Nigeria wherever they may reside. “The meeting also condemned in strongest terms the activities of Fulani herdsmen, who have taken over the entire Southern Nigeria and Middle Belt of Nigeria, including invading state Houses of Assembly, preventing them from making laws, cows going to classrooms and chasing our children out of schools, killing our farmers on their farms and raping their wives.” On the need for restructuring, the leaders said “we also resolved on the need for the restructuring of Nigeria and to uphold the principles of true federalism as agreed by the founding fathers of Nigeria and practiced effectively in the years before the first military coup in Nigeria. “We reaffirm our stand on true federalism is the system of government founded on the democratic principles and institutions in which the power to govern is shared between the national and the federating units.

Such units had control over their own affairs and bequeathed equal status with their constitution which is consistent with the federal constitution. “We affirm and resolve in the implementation of the report of the 2014 National Conference aimed at complete transformation and restructuring of our country and to build and Confederate Nigeria unity through peaceful and harmonious unity, progress and genuine development. “We want concrete steps taken on the implementation of 2014 National Conference Report before 1st October 2017. “We resolve to reawaken once more the spirit of friendship and mutual respect among our peoples and extol our common determination to pursue peace, progress and enhance the continued existence of Nigeria just as we commend the convener of this dialogue in bringing us together. We appeal to them to continue to do so in future.”

you should be ashamed of yourself for being a hypocrite, you grew up in the north and yet you have the guts to called them your enemies, I know that you wrote these just to gather likes from the yoruba, but sorry to say what you wrote up there won't change anything in nairaland i can bet with my last penny.
Hé said the north is the common enemy of thé south becos all southerners are easy prey to their religions violence...to the Hausa /fulani you are an infidel and a sacrificial lamb at the alter of their religion.if you are not one of them.. however the middle belt and the northern Christians are exempted...

Nigeria has a problem called tribalism, almost 57yrs of independence & only a few citizens can actually be referred to as a true Nigerian the rest of us owe our allegiances to our respective tribes. That's why we have this policy of a politician from diff tribe/region for our presidency every regime even if the candidate is an unqualified, unhealthy or corrupt all that matters is his tribe, granted all our politicians care only about themselves. I get this nation should never have been created but come on after 57yrs and buttload of energy and money spent on education. Tribalism is our HIV and every other problem is the AIDS. Let's learn from France, yes France is a multinational state like ours. We can either separate or truly unite anyone of this 2 is not better than the other but we must decide.
FYI 'm Yoruba but I support succession.
SE and Biafra people d Nigerian govt not people is the problem we all all suffering although SE more than others. Nnamdi Kanu is a bigot who incites violence online his rants will not win you friends local or international. its 2017 use d international community and judicial system as your weapon. for those who still want war FYI read your history humanity repeats everything, we have done this before it was horrible. the British thought WW2 would be quick, we will be home for Xmas was the slogan. 6yrs and tens of millions dead. check on Syria, with present technology in warfare.
Note: not conflict can only be resolved through war.
No body is asking for war..a national cry for restructuring..is it tooo much to ask? are we slave to the Hausa/Fulni's? that unless they agree to a policy that is the only reason it must be implemented, if not then the rest of the country can go to hell and burn? are we saying we Nigerians do no have a say in the injustice, and marginalization committed in the land?..why you sit there are talk as if all is well with Nigeria..maybe the day a Fulani head man touches a member of your family and is allows to live at large with blood in his hand then you will feel the pinch of the injustice we have been talking about...I am tired of this present Nigeria..we need to restructure but our government seems to be deafened to our plea..why should the north threaten the Igbos and go Scot free but other innocent supporters of IPOB/MASSOB were quickly killed by our security officers for just carrying out a peaceful protest...don't you think something is wrong this this country, where a group of ethnic nationality is seen as first class citizens; who can kill at will and carry arms unchallenged but cannot be applied to others that do not belong to that ethnic group..if you are an Hausa/Fulani..please hold your peace but if you are not then open your eyes.Nigeria must restructure and if the north refuse then then i think there are more peaceful ways to separate from this bondage we find ourselves. But we must continue to make our voice heard and give our politician sleepiness night though through a peaceful and civil manner until they hear our cry.I am from the south south but i am seek and tired of our cowardice.

Saving money on a DNA test for a woman i call my wifehuh I would gladly remain unmarried for life than marry a woman i cant trust by by at least 90%.. Our fathers were very lucky chaps, only God would save men from evil women of this new era..
who told you it did not happen in our father and mothers' time..at least I know of one case in the early 90's while growing up.the difference then was that there was no DNA to ascertain the paternity of the child. It has been there since and not a recent development.Cheating from both parties brings pain to both the husband or the wife who happens to be victims..while women's consequences of infidelity could result to to pinning another man's pregnancy on their husband to train, the husband on the other hand could contact STD'S from his affair and transfer to his wife..or still other women could get pregnant for him and pin it on other men..so in both ways both parties in the union who cheat do suffer the same consequences of heart break. No one is better than the other. So men should remain faithful to their wives while the wives to do the same to their husbands. No gender has a monopoly to cheat.

Odumakin is on his own, he is definitely not speaking for me.
If you are a yoruba would you rather be with the Hausa Flani or fight to free yourself and your people from them first before besiding if you wish to remain in southern Nigeria or not..you talk like a northerner of a childish Yoruba teenager. All we are asking is for Nigeria to be restructured which will be beneficial to all the ethnic group..there are times you play and time to be serious..enough of the hate going on..it wont do us any good.
