Nigeria Has Taken Over Ghana Entertainment Industry

Patriotism is defined as love of and/or devotion to one's country. I strongly believe that one way or the other, Ghanaians have lost touch with that word over the years and the reasons for this trend are best known to themselves.

I have notice over the years with dismay how the Ghanaian always want to behave like a westerner or look like the Nigerian and copy what a Nigerian has done whether through music, film, or comedy. They always want to play second fiddle to these Nigerians.

The above confirms that Nigerians have taken over our entertainment industry and dictating the pace now. They have hijacked our once vibrant entertainment industry.

It is more easier for you to turn on your radio, hear a song being played that sounds so much like Nigerian-made and if you are not cautious you will definitely mistake it thinking it was done by a Nigerian artiste but 'Na lie', its your Ghanaian star trying to sing like a Nigerian.

Why won't they want to sing like Nigerians? After all Dr. Poh tried it and it worked, it was an instant success, 4x4 also made something similar on Obrafours compilation and that was also an instant hit.

Nigerians have taken over every available space in Ghana and its worrisome.

Information available indicates that the percentage of internet fraud in Nigeria is falling and escalating in Ghana. The number of Ghanaians involved is rising sharply as the number of internet users increase in the country.

Internet fraud is falling in Nigeria and rising sharply in Ghana because, Nigerians have invaded our land and gracefully practicing their 419popularly known as “Advance Fee Fraud” here. This again should be blame on the Nigerian presence in Ghana.

Sorry for that little digression, am not here to judge anybody but I feel Nigerians presence in Ghana is doing more harm than good. I suggest something needs to be done immediately to arrest the situation.

Music

We have seen how Nigerian artistes have grown their fan base in Ghana with frequent call-up to share the stage with their Ghanaian counterparts. Shows from comedy to music awards have all seen Nigerian artistes dominating.

Whiles putting this piece together, I had a break to enjoy some latest videos on YouTube, soon I was watching 4x4's World Trade Centre (I want to touch your body) featuring Fresh Prince (Not Will Smith LOL), I was enjoying myself taping my feet on the ground and surprisingly a Nigerian close to me asked me a question I deem stupid and dumb.

The question was that which Nigerian artiste made that song? Indeed that question was asked in their usual arrogant manner.

I was indeed disappointed but didn't blame him though, why wont he ask a dumb question anyway? He later explained that, that song sounded more like a Nigerian-made track than Ghanaian hence his question. So his question is justified, you might say?

Why would a Ghanaian artiste want to be or sound like a Nigerian artiste? Sometimes am compelled to ask myself if it because they are allotted the VIP escort and a VIP treatment when performing in Ghana? My beef is why Nigerian music is flourishing in Ghana? Okay, I don't care how Ghana music is doing in Nigeria because I know they are not making it big there.

I spoke with some individuals, to solicit their views on this ill-fated development and from what I gathered; it bores down to the language barrier. Ghanaians turn to enjoy the 'pidgin' style of the Nigeria artistes.

A lot of people were of the view that Nigerian's ability to sing in the queen's language could be attributed solely to their success, which I support 100% but it's debatable because I have seen Ghanaians scrambling for Nigerian gospel done in Yoruba or Igbo.

"It's as simple as ABC, the majority identifies with the queen's language and that's what the Nigerian feel comfortable in, who cares about the Twi, Ga, Hausa or Ewe", one said. I am not really surprised though because copying has always been our culture and most annoying thing about it is that we copy it 'dito dito', like its said in the local parlance.

But does it worth to shun one's indigenous language and focus on another language under the pretext of selling a record (album)? Certainly not but business-wise, its understandable.

Entertainment in Ghana has lost what it started with, and now associates itself with copying; it has failed to learn new things making it easier for the Nigerians to take over.

It's like Ghanaians have lost sense of direction now; all the hit tracks you hear on the radio are Nigerian-made, from 2face's True Love to P Sqaure's No One Like You to Timaya' Den Mama to 9ice's Gonso Aso to D'banj's Fall In Love to Olu Maintain's Yahooze to Danfo Driver and the list continues.

Nigerian songs have taken over even in the nightclubs and the pubs.

Originality is what is awarded. Aplus doesn't need to sound westerner or like a Nigerian to send his 'Letter to the west". Tinny never sounded like a Nigerian to grab the Hip Hop Award in Nigeria.

Film

We all thought Agya Koo movies are too much and believe it has halted the Nigerian invasion but it has gone from bad to worst, apart from the language which he's fluent in which is Twi, one is sure to see the Mr. Ibus, Osuofias, Sam Loco Efes, Victor Osuagyes in Agya Koo now.

His movies are not what they promise to be any longer. Trust me you will love it when a Nigerian speaks 'pidgin'; it suits and makes them who they are but why do we want to copy it, to the extent of even speaking it in our movies? Why is the Ghanaian mind always fragile?

These movies luck substance, it does not carry any significant message whatsoever to reflect in day to day life and there is an interesting twist to it now, Ghanaian movie producer's bid to sound like their Nigerian counterparts now finds it normal to hire customier, directors and actors for their movie productions.

New movies are churned out virtually everyday with Nigerian influence. Am sure they would want to hire a 'latrine carrier' from Nigeria, if the need be. (Sorry for my words, but I needed to say that). Don't we have our culture to show off to the world than copying everything dito dito?

As if by design, Ghana movie producers, as wise as they are, thought it's more prudent to do Twi version of a Nigerian production to the Ghanaian market. Everything was done as if there was a collaboration between the two productions houses. The movie in question is 'Lonely Heart' and the Twi version is 'Madam Joan', with Stephanie Okereke and Nana Ama McBrown playing the lead roles respectively.

Sadly, everything in that production was copied, from A to Z. It is not only the above named movies but it's something they have been doing now. Why this nonsense now?

Just to rap up, have you wondered why any Ghanaian production directed by a Nigerian director, always comes out nicely? That's not for me to tell you why. I am not saying Ghana doesn't have equally good directors. But think.

Comedy

I was fortunate to be at National Theatre to watch one of these Night of 1007 Laughs and music shows, which follows on the heels of the 1006 Laughs and Music which was held earlier on and of course the list of performers were long with Nigerian comedians like Basket Mouth, Okey Bakassi, Klint de Drunk, etcetera.

The only comedians from Ghana made themselves look stupid, because coming on stage to repeat a joke a Nigerian comedian has said on the that same platform years back was clearly unpleasant.

I pray KSM and Fritz Baffour don't get offended though.

The Nigerian comedians as usual excelled in their delivery and everything, at least they made sure you laugh enough to forget you have unpaid utility bills as a result of the 'ecomini'. So why don't we want to be like them?

Like an ally said “Ghanaian entertainment has lost the true originality of our Ghanaian culture which has now been replaced with money, sex and glamour”.

We have copied blindly for far too long that I think Ghanaians can stick to their way of making movies and music and still excel.

There is nothing like being a Ghanaian. Since we were born as a Ghanaian; we must live as a Ghanaian; and die as a Ghanaian!

Ghana is very small compare to Nigeria with large Ethnic Group.The city in Accra is very small compare to Port harcourt. You can never compare Ghana to Nigeria because Nigeria and Ghana are not mate despite they are the first country to gain Independence my dear.

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos, his predecessor in office, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, The Director of Pan-African University, Professor Pat Utomi, and other prominent citizens have urged progressives in the country to rise up and use every tools available to fight and defeat every anti-democratic force that would negate the nation’s democracy.
Delivering his opening remark at the presentation of the book entitled: ‘Discourse, Politics and the 1993 Presidential Election campaigns in Nigeria’ yesterday at Airport Hotel Ikeja, the chairman of the occasion Senator Tinubu, said the book clearly demonstrated that June 12 would continue to resonate for many years and decades to come.
Senator Tinubu who was represented at the event by the Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, explained that the power of June 12 phenomenon lies in the ability of man to shape history and to transcend the hurdles of parochial obsession by enacting the progressive leap which would determine and define the politics of the fourth republic.
According to him, “June 12 demonstrated beyond all doubts, that ethnicity, religion, class could no longer be used to divide and conquer the Nigerians masses”.
He noted that one of the many lessons from the 1993 election lied in the fact that life is a struggle and that political power could only benefit our suffering and poor masses if the progressives are ready to contest for power in the most adverse conditions.
He said, “reactionaries will do everything possible to hold on to ill-gotten power because it is the passport to their ill-gotten wealth, our historic task is to use all legal and legitimate institutions, values and processes to engage them and dislodge them from power because they lack the vision and mission to transform this country to the benefit of the people.
Describing the book as a befitting contribution to the struggle the chairman said, “By reviewing an event of great historic value in the struggle of the progressive to win power and ensure that the poor masses bid farewell to poverty, it galvanizes us to action and sensitizes us to the burden of development that we progressive always carry”
Also, governor Fashola who was represented by the State Commissioner for information emphasized the need for the people to hold the system accountable for that mandate.
“We can not ignore it as a nation even in posthumously. the position of Lagos is very clear that Abiola be declared the winner of June 12 1993 election and all the benefits accrue to him.” he said.
The Guest speaker of the Occasion Professor Pat Utomi, said there is a slow growth in Nigeria in spite of the enormous human and other factors endowment because there is a major disconnect between the people and those in governance.
He added that rather than showing commitment to the plight of the poor masses, people in power are more committed to delivery the goods and loyalty to their enthroned godfathers.
He added that what the nation required is a citizen legislature made up of professionals who would take a live of absence from time to legislate on issues that would promote national growth and development.
He said “democracy is not the problem, but how we choose to structure it and the commitment of those entrusted with governance.”
He said June 12 provided the necessary opportunity to enshrine permanently the meaning of democracy and value of good election which was unfortunately denied by a few cabal.

THE country may be losing additional one thousand barrels per day following a multiple explosion that rocked a Chevron facility at Abiteye and Makaraba production station in Delta State yesterday.

Spokesperson of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Restore Hope, Colonel Rabe Abubakar, told The Guardian that soldiers deployed in the area reported that there was explosion but that Chevron was yet to determine the cause.

The Movement for the Emancipation for the Niger Delta (MEND) has claimed responsibility for the attacks and vowed to extend the sabotage code-named 'Hurricane Piper Alpha' to Chevron's Tank Farm in Escravos.

An oil industry security source disclosed that a multiple explosion rocked the facility. He explained that part of the facility was gutted by fire, which was still raging as at press time yesterday.

According to him, "we really cannot ascertain the exact cause of the massive explosion that rocked the facility. Our greatest concern is the safety of Chevron's tank farm here. We have not been able to figure out who was responsible for the explosions."

But MEND's mouthpiece, Jomo Gbomo, said just as the militant group was releasing a British hostage, Matthew Maguire, a major gas pipeline manifold and another major crude oil pipeline belonging to Chevron, which was recently repaired at over $56 million, were blown up by the militants.

Gbomo said: "The pipelines are located just 200 metres from the abandoned Camp 5 in Delta State, where the army is supposedly in control. The pipelines were due for re-commissioning. So, as it stands, we are back to square one.

"The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta carried out the recent attacks against Chevron in Delta State. The Makaraba oil well three and five and it's Trunk line and Gas lifts were blown up at about 5pm yesterday, June 13, 2009. Earlier on Friday, June 12, 2009, the Otunana oil well 1 and its Gas lift and Trunk lines were also destroyed."

He warned: "The Hurricane is heading towards the Chevron Tank Farm in Escravos; so, we wish to warn workers in that facility to leave now or else the same fate that befell the Elf Tank Farm in 2003 at Opumami, Delta State, will happen again in 2009 but with a worse consequence."

MEND has in the past 18 days attacked three Chevron facilities in Delta State. The first attack was on major trunk lines, which affected the flow stations at Alero Creek, Otunana, Abiteye, Makaraba and Dibi resulting in the loss of over 100,000 barrels per day.

The attacks are coming on the heels of the expiration of the 72-hour ultimatum issued by the group, warning all oil workers to leave the Niger Delta by last Monday or risk being victims of its planned series of attacks.

Meanwhile, the anti-bunkering patrol team of the JTF has arrested four suspects, who were engaged in illegal bunkering at Ogbodo Community in Delta State.

Colonel Abubakar explained that the suspected illegal bunkerers were arrested in possession of one wooden (Cotonou) boat, two speedboats and two pumping machines at Ogbodo.

Preliminary investigation, according to him, revealed that the suspects were on their way to Emereje, in Delta State, to dispose of the crude oil found with them.

He said the suspects had been handed over to the military Police detachment for further investigation.

The suspects are: Money Samuel (26) from Obazua in Edo State, Moses Sehu (28) from Burutu Council, Robert Olowu (33) from Ughelli Council and Francis Ofotorku (28) from Okpe Council, all in Delta State.

Col. Abubakar said the JTF also intercepted a tanker lorry registered Plateau XF 915 JNN, loaded with products suspected to be crude oil.

Also intercepted alongside the tanker, according to him, was a towing van meant to pull the tanker whenever it got stuck in muddy area.

He said the suspected owners of the tanker fled on sighting the JTF troops, but the suspects were given a hot chase and in the process, one Mr. Sunday Ohwoavworhua was arrested.

"Preliminary investigation conducted into the incident revealed that the product suspected to be crude oil was siphoned from the Uzese/Eriemu (SPDC) trunk15 pipeline following an earlier vandalisation on the pipeline by the saboteurs," Abubakar said.

He explained that the tanker was in the custody of the JTF and the suspect was assisting the security outfit to track down other members of the syndicates that specialise in vandalising and siphoning crude from pipelines.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) can conduct a popular and acceptable election similar to the annulled June 12, 1993 polls only when politicians in the country change their attitude to politics and electioneering.
The above was part of the submissions by stakeholders at the end of a one-day forum on democracy and Social Justice held in Abuja.

Participants at the event with the theme “ INEC and the future of Democracy in Nigeria” were unanimous that politicians needed a thorough re-branding of their attitude to politics.
In his paper, Nigerian-born American Professor Mathew Atobe, said that good governance shall hold sway in the country when there was accountability, transparency, responsibility, efficiency, equitability and a consensus-oriented political culture in the nation.

He argued that good governance would only thrive when every interested Nigerian was given an opportunity of participating in all levels of politics without fear of being harmed.
Also another don, Prof. Mike Ikhariale in his paper, stressed the need for politicians to reverse the culture of “do or die” for the INEC to be an unbiased umpire in future polls.
He explained that the problem was not the law but the politicians, who had always gone out of their way to engage in electoral fraud, using the Commission as a tool.

National Secretary of National Conscience Party, Yunusa Tanko in his paper, recalled the good old days of the political class which honoured their different ideologies, as against thuggery and electoral fraud.
Tanko enjoined the Federal Government to accept without amendment the Justice Mohammed Uwais Electoral report and heed good opinion and enjoy the latter benefits.
Civil Rights activist cum Journalist, Mr. Sina Loremikan argued that the nation would not find political greatness for as long as the electoral system remained faulty.

He contended that the INEC must be truly independent of government and any political interest, to give the nation a credible political roadmap to the future.

Loremikan stressed that the known political culture of electoral malpractices dating back to the 1970s including ineffective funding of the INEC, insecurity, electoral compromise, late and even non-availability of electoral materials among others had continued to make the nation a laughing stock among the comity of nations.

Daily Times former Political Editor, Emeka Nwosu queried the right of government to appoint the leadership of INEC, the use of ad-hoc staff at elections, and the misappropriation of funds allocated to elections, saying that the loyalty of the Commission would always lean towards the benefactor.
Nwosu however commended the Justice Uwais report as it affected election riggers and urged the Media to continue holding government accountable to the people.

In his remarks, Civil Rights Journalist and Legal Practitioner, Mr.Richard Akinnola recalled the ugly political situation in the country and in particular the 2007 general elections, saying that politicians were the problem of the system, using the INEC as umpire.
He alleged that in many cases, elections were rigged between the polling and collating centres when authentic and fake results were presented.

Onyekachi Apam, Dele Aiyenugba and John Mikel Obi were the first players to arrive at the Super Eagles Sheraton Hotel lodgings in Lagos on Friday ahead of their trip to Malta.
Defender Apam arrived at about noon while Mikel joined him about an hour later.

"All the three players are in camp right now, but most of the others have called in and said they will be in camp by 16h00," Team Coordinator Emmanuel Attah told KickOffNigeria.com.

Both players checked in immediately and went up to their rooms to await the arrival of team staff and other players.

The squad will train on Saturday afternoon before flying out to Malta on Sunday.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is said to be on the verge of signing Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, according to reports out of Israel.
Wenger was at the Stade Geoffroy Guichard in Saint Etienne to see Nigeria stun France 1-0 and Israeli website Telesport reported that the Arsenal manager was impressed enough to make enquiries about the goalkeeper.

"Wenger is looking for another goalkeeper to the squad and in the coming days Enyeama should move to Arsenal," Telesport reported on their website.

"Hapoel want 2 million euro for him out of which his former club, Bnei Yehuda will get thirty percent."

It is not the first time Wenger will be casting lustful glances in the direction of the former Enyimba goalkeeper.

Following a stellar Nations Cup outing in 2006, Wenger almost signed Enyeama, but the deal collapsed midway through negotiations.

This season, Enyeama's stock has risen sky high, and the goalkeeper was voted Player of the Season in Israel after only letting in 28 goals in 33 appearances.


He is also yet to concede a goal in six consecutive matches for Nigeria; five World Cup qualifiers and one friendly match, against France.


Enyeama was rumoured to be on his way to Spanish La Liga side Espanyol, but that door was shut when the club extended the contract of their Cameroon goalkeeper Carlos Kameni.

A Member of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Mohammed Annur, said he had spent more than N107 million on the construction of a modern Mosque at Zabi in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The Mosque, which is located on the Kano-Zaria highway at Zabi village, about 10 kilometres from Zaria, could accommodate more than 10,000 worshippers at a time.

The mosque, which would soon be inaugurated, has modern toilet facilities, shops, restaurants and other facilities for travellers.

"I embarked on the project for the love and fear of God. I started the construction in 1984, but I have to abandon it because I became bankrupt.

"I expected that some philanthropists, who have the fear of God, will assist, but unfortunately none was forthcoming.

"I thank God that after 24 years, he gives me the opportunity to complete it. I rely on nobody but Him. The mosque will soon be opened officially by the grace of God," he said.

ABUJA—THE National Integrated Power Project (NIPP), sites across the country, are at 75 per cent completion stage.

The Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan-led Presiden-tial Steering Council on the Completion of NIPP, said yesterday after its sixth meeting.

The committee said the declaration was after a comprehensive but segmented tour of all NIPP sites across the country.

The committee, however, observed that though electricity generation was the key element providing Nigerians with adequate and uninterrupted electric power supply, transmission was also very crucial as the product cannot be enjoyed by the citizenry unless it is transmitted and distributed to homes.

The cooperation and full support of the host communities, the taskforce noted, had become very important to achieve government target.

It lamented that recent events across the sites visited showed that there were challenges facing government resulting from lack of cooperation from land owners along transmission lines.

The committee added that equipment for the jobs are 100 per cent and general work 75 per cent completed while civil work alone in all the sites visited was put at 50 per cent.

It assured that as promised by President Umaru Yar’Adua that the country will achieve 6000 megawatts of electricity generation by December 2009, Nigeria is on course towards revamping the nation’s energy sub-sector.

The Council also announced a current electricity generation capacity of 4,500 megawatts in the country but lamented that only 2,000 megawatts is currently being transmitted and distributed because of constraints thrown up by inadequate gas supply, pipeline vandalism resulting in inferior quality of gas as well as security concerns.

Governors Namadi Sambo (Kaduna), Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta) and the Minister of State for Power, Alhaji Nuhu Way, briefed State House Correspondents after the council meeting, which had six governors from the six geo-political zones, and key related ministers as members.

Said Sambo: “You will recall that we divided ourselves into four groups and we have gone round all the power project sites at Calabar, Sapele, Egbema, Papalanto Omotosho, Omoko and Egbenema power plants.

”It is with pleasure that I inform you that the average completion stage of all the power plants across the country is as at today 75 per cent completion,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sambo has appealed to the host communities to cooperate with the contractors handling the transmission lines for the NIPP so that transmission lines could be erected along the routes to guarantee that generated power reached the end users.

According Sambo who declined to name the involved communities, the council members toured power projects in Calabar, Sapele, Papalanto, Egbema, Omotosho,; He stressed that the major challenges being faced right now are in the area of continued cooperation from the host communities.
