What is the meaning of Oru in Igbo?

Why should a slave in Igboland be called Oru?

Oru is the real name of the Ijaw people. It was the whiteman who called us Ijo, but our proper name is Oru. This must mean that slaves to Igbo must have been traditionally taken from the Oru people.

In addition, a statement made by Abagworo struck me. He said that his people have a saying that "I am Oru, but I am not Ijaw". Are Abagworos people not colonised Igbos of original Oru extraction? Bear in mind Abagworo is from a riverine community in Imo State.

Thought you could speak Igbo well.
Anyway, the tones are different.
Also, "Oru" as in slave is the Anambra/Onitsha, Idemili version
While "Ohu" is the Nnewi and others version for slave.

The "Oru" you mean is different.
We say "Oru na Igbo bu nwanne" (Oru and Igbo are brothers). That is the one Abagworo belong.

I was reading on the internet when I stumbled across an interview with a slave woman from Umahia who was owned by my great-grandfather Chief John George (pure Ijaw man).

It is simply laughable to claim that slave owners were Igbo. It is well known that significant portion of Nembe and Akassa are descendant from slaves. Pray tell, who owned them?

The only difference between Ijaw-owners and Igbo slave-owners is that slaves to Ijaw become part of the family whilst slaves to Igbo become Osu.

Not true. They became "ohu" or "oru". Not the same as Osu.

I would warn Ijaw and Bini and any other Southern Nigerian tribes that they are wasting their time  and energy arguing over the issue of land. As long as Nigeria remains one, there will ALWAYS be such fracas. They would stop only after we have chased the Hausa/Fulani away and built a 20 meters high fence to separate North and South; only then can we have true peace. Heck we can't even have a SNC because Aboki refused. But we would have it after chasing them away and separating from them.

The idea of any group wiping out another in Southern Nigeria is only a myth invented by your thieving brother ndu_chucks to foment divide and rule in Southern Nigeria. There is no historical evidence to support that.
Wiping out tribes different from yours is a known military strategy of the North. Your brother Murtala Muhammad did that in 20th century Anioma and Onitsha. So, don't foist your evil culture on the rest of us.

Despite all these Ijaw gra gra here, they have NEVER fought any war against Igbo or other neighbors/groups. I would not call Ijaw-Itshekiri fracas a WAR. Such a thing NEVER happened in Southern Nigeria. So, go figure.

Are you trying to tell me that an Ijaw gave the name Biafra to Eastern Region after the secession was declared or that secessionists chose to use the name Biafra to declare that the whole eastern region including Ijawland (mind you the Ijaws did not share your seccession dreams) is breaking away from our great Federal republic?

The ijaws are Immigrate of Edo state, ondo state or warri or farcados
The Ijaw people are nomadic fishermen who fish . and they go to places where they can find fish.

The fulani are also nomadic people who trade in cattle.

So people should get the history correct.

It is like saying the fulani who bring cow to lagos to sell own lagos or oyo state. that is not correct.

the way how system work is like this. places like apapa or ikoyi use to be white settlement. most of the street are name after white people. the same thing apply. you cant say the white people own the land. in the usa. the native india are considered the own of the land. Is the same thing in nigeria. THe ijaws are not owners of Edo state, ondo state or warri or farcados, they are immigrate. even the so call land they claim is there own because of the oil . The ijaws are only saying this because of oil. The ijaws know they dont own the place. they just want to get paid for what they dont own. This is how nigerian are. Specious argument. It might seem true only because most guys are strugglers, ('losers' if you prefer) who make the fatal mistake of investing their emotions - and limited resources - in 'loving' a girl they think might be difficult to replace. More often than not, girls realize they are doing such guys a favour by dating them - and they do not love the guy as deeply as he loves them. So whenever she decides to opt out and go for 'greener pastures', the poor guy often finds it difficult to overcome his grief. Besides a beautiful girl is probably the easiest and cheapest thing to get for the average rich dude here. Why cry over something you can so effortlessly replace? So basically, post-break up trauma is mainly a struggling/broke guy problem; naija girls are quite merciless when they're in a 'relationship' with this sort of guy. But there is a way to prevent this.

The remedy for this heartbreak of a thing is simple: Never love a girl more than she loves you. In fact, never love her at all sef. Liking her - in as temporary a manner as possible - is sufficient. Emotional indifference is such a powerful tool that makes you immune to the bullshyte of most of these fickle girls. But as long as you prefer to love a girl deeply rather [size=14pt]than face the more meaningful task of making money[/size], you would grieve deeply sooner or later.
