Shortly after my last column I felt I had had enough of the pressure and tension of life in my beloved Lagos. I concluded that the perennial traffic jam had become insufferable; that I could no longer stand the sight of the large armies of street beggars and menacing rough-necks, whom we call "area boys"; that I longed for the long-lost luxury of being able to sleep at night without keeping an ear on alert for armed robbers. In short I needed a break from everything in the environment which had given me, and continued to nourish, an apparently incurable headache. Call it a holiday, My return journey was uneventful, that is, until the coach reached the Seme border. We had crossed the Togo/Benin border at Illah Konji without any hustle. The problem began as soon as we arrived at the Nigerian side of the border at Seme and the notorious "Nigerian factor" descended on us. At the border area there was a checkpoint every 100 metres, with officials at each demanding bribes to facilitate our vehicle's passage. Beyond Seme the checkpoints came at one- or two-kilometre intervals, manned variously by the police, customs officials and anti-drug officers - all armed. I wondered how the Beninoise and Togolese authorities maintained the discipline I noticed at their borders. The supposed two-hour journey to Lagos lasted double that time. I knew I had returned home and my heart skipped one or two beats. BBC Shola Odunfa http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/8161952.stm This summarizes my feelings about Nigeria. Believe me, I would live in my "independent village" than in this giant chaos. Big countries are by far harder to manage. Small countries in Africa will give more peace of mind even if they are poorer. I want to be able to walk the streets even at 2.00 am in the night without fear of anything. I want to ride bicycles again without being shoved off the road. That is what those who chant "Giant of Africa" don't understand. I don't want to be giant of anything. I just need electricity, food, a roof over my head (even if that roof is thatch!), ability to walk around and bike around and be safe in my country. A friend just returned from Asia after escorting a heart patient there for a complex heart bypass surgery. She said that the Chief Cardiac Consultant, some of the best in the world, came to work on a bicycle! He simply gets on his bike and pedals away home after a long surgical procedure! In Nigeria, that surgeon would be GOD! |
@asha 80. I read where someone said that the Yoruba sees anyone from after Ore as Igbo and I'm inclined to believe it. Even in the North, anyone from the South without tribal marks are simply classified as Igbo. Wrong or right, that's just Naija for you. In one of the Kano riots, some Edo people where going about their normal businesses claiming not to be Igbo (when the Almajiri was busy seeking out Igbos to kill as usual). What happened was interesting. The first group of casualties were Edo folks who were going about simply saying "I no be Ibo". The Hausa mob was also simply plucking their heads off with sharp swords and butcher knives. Meanwhile the real Igbo were carefully observing these from safe groupings around Sabon Geri. When the Hausa had done killing the Edo people, the Igbo had organised; armed with guns, they started killing Hausas and chased them into the Old Kano (walled city). That was the first time the Igbo fought back decisively in Kano. That was in 1992. So back to the "Are MEND Igbos or are Igbos MEND?" The lines are quickly blurring these days. I won't be surprised if we wake up tomorrow to discover that Igbos have become MEND! |
If anybody really wants to find a workable solution to Nigeria, they should start by splitting up the country along major tribal lines first. After that, peoples who share cultural, historical and religious grounds should engage in serious "founding conferences". In these conferences, all issues should be hashed out and agreed upon way before any new nation (s) emerges. Let's start with Arewa, Middle belt, Odua, Biafra, and N/delta. I suspect the Biafrans and Deltans will form a nation fairly quickly due to already existing ties and shared visions for the future. The next phase (if there is still a need) might be the negotiated union of Biafra and N/delta. The Biafrans can then negotiate with Odua (if either party is interested), next will be to negotiate with the Middle beltans, ie Benue (if they are prepared to negotiate realistically). I suspect that the only group who (through historical antecedents, cultural differences and religious preferences ), may have to form a completely separate nation is the Arewa. Nigeria truly cannot be one as is. Too many innocent people have died, and even more people died to gain freedom from Nigeria. I believe they did not die in vain. The final outcome might then be: (1) Arewa (2) Union of Nigeria (where every member -Biafra, Odua, middle belt -flies its own flag, has separate anthem, presents football teams to FIFIA like England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland in Britain). I believe the Union of Nigeria can agree on a confederate constitution ( ie apart from individual constitutions each member state has) defining what powers are ceded to the center (I suspect as little power as possible will be ceded in order to avoid the same mistake of Nigeria). Before attacking my idea, please read it carefully and think it through. I welcome other smart alternatives. Any abusive words will be returned in kind! Thanks. |

Something tells me that auwal87 and other northerners are serious about leaving Nigeria. How else do you explain all these riots in the north against southerners and the imposition of sharia and other actions of impunity. Frankly I think Yorubas are the only ones who want to keep things the way they are, or who want Nigeria to stay one even if nothing works! The fiercest defenders of the status quo are Yorubas. Wonder why ![]() ![]() A haaaa! Maybe it is because of oil! ![]() |
@ No2Atheism Keep deceiving yourself. The Igbos messed up in 1966 just like the MEND is "messing" you up today. ![]() For a craven (cowardly) nation like the yoruba, the worst crime you can commit is to dare; to brave a situation. That's why they will never understand the patriotic Nzeogwu coup. That is why Abiola could not be president. That is why they are busy killing themselves in the west instead of daring to face Hausa to change the system from the center. That is why that coward Obasanjo effectively did all he could to die in office. He was too scared of life without power. To the yoruba, Nigeria can become the worst nation in the world; just don't do anything! Pls shhhhh, tip toe, tip toe, don't try anything e jo! "The future does not belong to the faint hearted, it belongs to the brave" - Ronald Reagan (after the Challenger tragedy) |
You have to understand the average Yoruba mindset to understand what he meant by "Igbo downfall". My cousin owns half of the buildings along a particular street in Shomolu Lagos, and Igbo dominate them even in Lagos through share resilience and the indomitable spirit of the Igboman, and Yorubas are here shouting "Igbo downfall". By "downfall" he meant that Igbos are not looting the Niger delta oil with them and Hausa. Like I said, the only crime Igbos committed in Nigeria was to want progress. Go and read Nzeogwu's coup manuscript, you would think he spoke of today's Nigerian politicians. If Gideon Okar succeeded, his coup would have achieved the same goal as Nzeogwus and you won't hear tribe there. The yorubas are masters of distortion and changes colors more than the chameleon. Our only fault as Igbos in Nigeria is that we want progress. We have always wanted progress (which is why they won't let us go). But we are tired of stagnation. We want a functioning nation. The Yorubas are very much at home with throwing an "owambe" party in the middle of a road in proximity of an open "gutter" ; 21st century or not. He can come back from London today and still fit in there. ![]() |
"it is my considered view that whilst some(Maybe resource control) of the demands of the East are excessive within the context of a Nigerian union, most of such demands are not only wellfounded, but are designed for smooth and steady association amongst the various national units of Nigeria." -Awolowo http://www.dawodu.com/awolowo2.htm I think I have said enough to demonstrate that any war against the East, or vice versa, on any count whatsoever, would be an unholy crusade, for which it would be most unjustifiable to shed a drop of Nigerian blood." -Awolowo Guess what Awolowo did once Biafra was declared by the East? Starvation suddenly became a fair weapon of war against the same Easterners fighting a just cause. I wish the Yoruba could for once tell the rest of Nigerians where they stand on key national issues. The Above quote may shock some people but that was vintage Awo. How can anyone be compatriot with a dodgy and shifty character? Where do your people (Yoruba) stand on key national issues like resource control or Sharia or native /settler issue, restructuring, State police, Presidential system etc The 1966 crisis was a chicken and egg situation but an opportunity to form a united Nigeria came up at the constitutional conference in 1966 and Aburi talks in 1967. Why did the Yoruba "technocrats" sabotage it? The very same tactics they employed in the Obasanjo constitutional conference against the south south on resource control. I think the Igbos are tired of stagnation. We want Biafra because we can't be "compatriots" with dodgy and shifty tribes who are at home with retrogression and stagnation. We want to move forward. After inspecting the infrastructure put in place by Ngige in Anambra state (in under 3 years), I became convinced that the whole East can be like Europe (at least roadwise) in 10 years if we are let out that choking space controlled by a center at home with the 19th century. We are baffled that our people are still dying from preventable causes in 2009. I know you people (yorubas) won't agree to part ways until oil finishes but we will keep asking. If you hate us this much, then let us go! |
@Kobojunkie I know that there is no "Nigeria" because when the opportunity to create a nation presented itself 43 years ago, the Yoruba combined with the Hausa to create a cesspit. Everyone has been in that cesspit ever since. People are now beginning to challenge it and kobojunkie is peeing his pants. ![]() Solution? Balkanise that space into manageable bits and pieces! I know this presents a nightmare scenario (sorry Kobojunkie ) to the current lords of that cesspit, but too many innocent lives are being lost daily to prop up the crumbling mammoth. Igbos and their Eastern brothers were Biafrans! 2 million died to make that statement and we will never forget them! To know who is a Biafran today is easy. Anyone who hates stagnation, morbid corruption, myopic leadership, permanent national darkness, horrible roads, religious fanaticism, laziness and indolence, bloated national ego based on nothing ( Africa big brother), election rigging and selections, inept public officials, genocide and war crimes against locals and everything ascribable to bad leadership; anyone who hates these with every fiber of his being is a BIAFRAN. I just found out that I am a BIAFRAN! And I happen to be Igbo. Please let me out of this cesspit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to be a diehard Nigerian but after reading from some posters here I'm not so sure anymore. I'm convinced we need to revisit our past to iron it out properly before there can be "Nigerians". @Kobojunkie It is not enough to be ANTI SECESSIONIST. Where do your people (Yoruba) stand on key national issues like resource control or Sharia or native /settler issue, restructuring, State police, Presidential system etc ?I will ignore you henceforth if fail to answer these questions. |
bilymuse:Please HELP!! I'm looking for my MOOSE. He escaped yesterday from the barnyard. Anyone seen him ![]()

The great "Ikemba" (the power of a nation) is our living ICON. The only true and tested ICON in Nigeria. The only one who led his people through a WAR, something no other so-called national icons like Awo and others experienced. Today, like ever before, The great Ikemba cannot walk down the road in Igboland without Igbos carrying him on their shoulders singing and dancing. No one leads Igbos by the nose unlike in the north and west of Nigeria where people worship empty shells. These are the same Igbos who have no kings historically! The GREAT IKEMBA is the only Igbo who command this loyalty and support in Igboland. He has earned every bit of that respect and idiots like you cannot take that away from him. Ikemba has successfully bred Uwazuruike and many many many, more like them. Justice is unstoppable. If you think the Ikemba is afraid of your Federal govt, why did he PERSONALLY open the Biafran house in the US. The day Nigeria will collapse is the day anything foul play happens to him or even the "mago mago lawyer", that day you can sign bye bye to your fake nation. So Mr MOOSE be afraid, be very afraid, 'cos the days of free oil are fast ending. Start digging in your mama backyard in Ogbomosho! Maybe you may find something. ![]()

I never knew how beautiful it was until I saw it alongside other African flags here.
|
ezeagu:I stand corrected. Even more beautiful! |
Kobojunkie:But be honest Kobojunkie, doesn't this look beautiful? ![]()

Kobojunkie:By being "great" I meant comparatively (to the present one) , that is why I followed it with the 1966 crisis. Every nation is tested. Our colonialists where not in Africa to play "father Christmas". They did their best (considering their reasons for coming to Africa in the first place). Nigerian young army officers (being blindly patriotic about an untested nation) struck in 1966 (go and read Nzeogwu's coup manuscript, it is online). You'd think he was talking about the Nigeria of today. Of course nobody understood them and Igbo had to pay for it. But the test came in the Constitutional Conference ordered by Gowon in 1966 and later Aburi in 1967. The "Awoists" made sure it never saw the light of day by spinning beyond recognition. |
I tend to think that the 1960 constitution was really great. That is why I hardly blame the British for our current problems. They did their best for us in 1960. When we had the opportunity to strenghten the nation after the 1966 crisis, treacherous people saw an opportunity to dominate instead of a true national duty to consolidate. That is where we have been. The only crisis of stability in the old regions happened in the West. The other regions were largely stable. So, my ideas above remains valid. |
I am assured Nigeria is NOT WORKING! Biafra is only ONE OPTION. Even Biafra came about because someone reneged on an agreement. Today if Nigerians decide to HONESTLY address the REAL ISSUEs (the ones you have been denying) maybe a real nation can still emerge. It can be this way: United nations of Nigeria (or Kingdoms or States) (1) Biafra (2)Arewa (3)Oduduwa (4) Middle belt (5) Ijawland (if they want or they can join Biafra -no force) Everyone belongs to the GREAT NIGERIA (like in Britain). We maintain joint military, foreign service and interstate police. Every unit flies its won flag and plays international football as in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland. I can't wait to fly my Biafran flag. It is more popular in Igboland than Nigerian flag. |
There was this rumor during the Second World War that Adolf Hitler had some Jewish blood in him too! ![]() |
Nigeria and nuclear power, someone is planning another genocide ![]() |
The G8 is 100% correct in their concern. Nigeria has an ignoble past (genocide against its own citizens) and has poor leadership culture. If Nigerian government has even big non-nuclear bombs today, do you think they won't use it against MEND and Niger delta? Someone (N'allah) was already calling for the killing of 20 million Nigerians in the delta. Anything that has weapon making potential MUST be withheld from Nigeria until a true and stable nation emerges. |
That is why Asari Dokubo just found out this week that it is only Ibos that support 100% resource control. It is because people like you have been telling lies all these years. The Ibos support resource control, the Yoruba and Hausa does not. Simple truth. Nigeria is not working because the Hausa and Yoruba (civil war victors) decided to use Igbo and N/Delta as slaves for 40 years. Igboland was developing even before oil was discovered. Igboland will continue to develop irrespective of oil. Why because Igbo are prepared to work hard. You can keep on deluding yourself. Those MEND guys enjoy immense support in their catchment areas. The MASSOB enjoy real grassroots support in Igboland. You advocate peaceful means of agitation, what do you think MASSOB has been doing for 10 years. What do they get in return, mass murder by the Nigerian state. They are still unarmed and only protest carrying placards even today. Instead of talking with them, they are mowed down in large numbers. Do you know what that does? It only teaches bystanders or observers, that the Nigerian government lacks the leadership ability to keep the nation one, and that the only language they understand is violence. If MASSOB decides to take up arms tomorrow, do you know what a fearsome force they will make (after enduring years of genocide)? People like you are the reason why Nigeria does not have a future as one nation. Keep trying to deflect from the real issues. THEY WON"T GO AWAY! |
You write as if someone is advocating VIOLENCE here. I think you are just trying to be clever by half! Nigeria is NOT WORKING AND WILL NEVER WORK until REAL ISSUES are addressed. Like I said before, it is depressing and unfortunate that there is a HEAVILY ARMED REBEL FORCE in 2009 in Nigeria. It should not have happened. This rebel force is even far more formidable than the Biafran force of 1967. This one has the potential (going by the broad support they enjoy in the old east and even some parts of the west) to cripple Nigeria. I know people like Kobojunkie don't believe in righteous causes but they do exist. But let me ask you, what should N/Delta people have done that they haven't done before? and how long do you want them to wait? Maybe till all the oil have been sucked out of their land (I hope you know that oil has lifespan -about 30 years). So, instead trying to deceive naive readers here, go and tell the Nigerian government to do the right thing. Give oil back to the rightful owners. Let's drill for oil in Ogbomosho and Birnin Kebbi. ![]() |
Kobojunkie:I pity Sri Lanka. They have just postponed their problem 40 years ahead! There is this curse that follows "victors" of these tribal wars. The victors will try to shape the future like they did in Nigeria -based on their whims, the losers can go to hell! It would take great leadership to actually put that Sri Lankan war to an end by addressing the "real reasons" that started the war. Make the Tamils feel that they are secure and assured of a bright future in Sri Lanka. Integrate them by embracing them, not by trying to enslave them. Grant them autonomy (complete with local administration and flag). Otherwise, I predict now ( after Nigeria's experience) the Sri Lankan nation is sitting on a keg. Tribal based wars are hard to win. Again, whoever fought on the right side of that war (believe me the Sri Lankans know -never mind the propaganda -someone was right and someone wrong) will eventually emerge victorious even after centuries! The US civil war was won by those who fought on the right side of justice. Even at that, the losers in the South still kept almost everything they fought for, except slavery. That is why the US is a strong and stable nation. Great nations like the US are products of great (awesome) leadership. Third world countries like Nigeria are controlled by the type of minds on this forum - those who blame the victim for daring to complain! Is there any wonder why Nigeria is facing exactly the same war in 2009? And while we are at it, the nation is steadily moving backwards! Quite unfortunate and depressing indeed! |
Nigeria is not working because there is too much wickedness and hatred. A whole nation has forgotten that about 40 years ago, 2 million "fellow Nigerians" were killed between 1967 and 1970. You can go to youtube.com to view the videos of Biafran war. Someone in the video ( I suspect a calabar guy) told a newsman that he was leaving Lagos after 15 years because his safety could not be guaranteed. That was in 1967! The thing repeated itself during the Abiola crisis in 1994. I don't want to count how many people that died in "northern riots" since the end of the war. I think the question should be, why are some tribes in Nigeria always quick to shed innocent blood? and how can such tribes pretend to share nationhood with their victims? Someone from the north recently called for (by implication) killing of 20 million Niger Deltans, just for oil. Sometimes the most frustrating problem is when some Nigerians make statements like "politicians are the problem". It is like saying "headache is the problem" of a man with cerebral malaria! Who doesn't know politicians are corrupt in a nation like Nigeria, the question is why? Let's say for instance that James Ibori stole the funds from Urhroboland (no federal allocations, all revenues are generated in Urhroboland) treasury or Alams stole funds from Ijawland treasury, let's see how long they survive their peoples rage. People hide behind this mammoth of a "nation" to commit genocide, grand theft (larceny), fraud, and all manners of evil which make the lives of inhabitants of that space brutish and short! Time we tell ourselves the truth. The ghosts of the innocent victims of Nigeria are wailing before God for justice! |
OYB_MEND:I couldn't agree more! |
You need to train the one you have first to differentiate between war and "kill and go". To understand that even wars have rules and conventions. Train a modern military first! A modern military does not engage in rapes and pillages. They respect Geneva conventions of war. They are not used to rig elections. Nigerian military needs a total overhaul. The civil war impact never left, so we have the "Odis" and "Zaki biams". Until you restructure and modernise it, Nigerians should be wary of arming them even with sticks! |
Fhemmmy:I have noticed that anyone who argues for a non-tribal Naija always sounds hollow. The truth is that there is no "Nigerian nation" yet. It is possible to create one later. South Africa negotiated for about 3 years before they arrived at their constitution. Our military woke up one early morning and imposed our constitution on us irrespective of what we thought, Well, it is not working as feared! For now, there are ethnic nationalities. We can build our nation based on that. We are Africans and we are deeply tribal as demonstrated by tayo4lif. No hard feelings! |
tayo4lif:What are you smoking ![]() ??I didn't know yoruba tribalism can be this blatant. You effectively doubled yoruba states from current 16% to 31% There are characters in this forum. Chai naija get problem o! |
George_D:Thanks my bro! Don't mind those who refuse to reason, or too cowardly to face the truth. History is already judging them right before our eyes. MASSOB don't even need to do anything more. MEND is already doing it all! I rest my case. bilymuse:The "baldhead Ikemba" has outlasted your PA AWO -treachery idolized! Ikemba has successfully bred Uwazuruike and many many many, more like them. Justice is unstoppable. So Mr MOOSE be afraid, be very afraid, 'cos the days of free oil are fast ending. Start digging in your mama backyard. Maybe you may find something. LOL
