Indications suggest an Israeli soldier has been taken captive by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip, the IDF Spokesman said Friday at noon, hours after a 72-hour humanitarian cease-fire agreed upon by Israel and Hamas collapsed after holding for less than two hours.

Mortar shells fired from within the Gaza Strip landed near a border-region town some two hours after the truce deal brokered by the United States and the EU kicked in, and shortly thearafter Palestinian medical sources reported that at least 25 Gaza residents were killed and dozens of others wounded by IDF artillery fire directed at the southern Strip.

The names of the five Israeli soldiers killed by Palestinian mortar fire near the Gaza Strip border were released by the IDF. The number of Israeli military fatalities now stands at 61.

Sixteen Palestinians were killed by IDF fire overnight and in the early morning in Khan Yunis, according to Gaza medical sources. Nine of the deceased belong to Al-Farah family, of which four are children aged 4 to 12.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the Palestinian death toll since fighting began is now at over 1,450, and the number of wounded has risen to over 8,200.

PoliticsEXCLUSIVE: How We’ll Fight Military Onslaught On Us – Sheikh El-zakzaky by Onyocha(op): 6:06pm On Jul 31, 2014
July 31, 2014 Festus Owete

The sect was on a procession to mark the annual Quds day in Zaria when soldiers reportedly shot at them. But military authorities say the incident will be investigated before apportioning blames

———————

Islamic cleric and leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, has said his group would employ legitimate peaceful and legal means to challenge the killing of 35 of its members by the Nigerian military last Friday rather than resort to violence like the extremist Boko Haram sect.

He said although the group was still bitter over the incident, it had accepted the incident as a spiritual test of the group and its leader.

Mr. El-Zakzaky described Islam as a religion of peace and said being a movement of peace, his organisation would never be provoked into taking arms against the Nigerian state and its innocent citizens.

The Islamic Movement of Nigeria is far too peaceful, mature and organised to take the law into its hand to foment trouble, he said.

According to him, rather than resort to violence which could have fatal consequences on the country the group would take its case to the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, and other civl rights bodies for redress.

The organisation will also seek legal redress in court if necessary, the Islamic cleric said.

“We are very angry,” Mr. El-Zakzaky told PREMIUM TIMES in a telephone interview on Wednesday. “Thirty-five members of our organisations were murdered by the military. It was a peaceful procession but they shot at our members unprovoked.

“But in spite of the tragedy, we will remain peaceful. Islam is a religion of peace. And we are organised. We are matured, and nobody can provoke us into violence.”

When asked if his angry members won’t be provoked into descending on the country like the Boko Haram sect, the cleric said his members are aware of examples of past Islamic prophets and leaders who were spiritually tested in various ways but who did not resort to violence or ungodly conducts.

The Boko Haram sect took up arms against the Nigerian state when its leader, Mohammed Yusuf, was extrajudicially murdered by the Nigeria Police.

“So many things like that have happened to great servants of Allah in the past. Imam Khomeini’s (of Iran) sons were also killed, but he never lost focus. We will never lose focus. Why should we be provoked? We don’t attack, we only talk about faith and what we stand for. We are a peaceful people and no one can accuse us of ever instigating violence.”

Members of the sect were on a procession to mark the annual Quds day in Zaria when soldiers reportedly shot at them at the popular PZ roundabout in the city.

The crisis started when the soldiers allegedly tried to disperse the sect, which was denouncing Israeli’s attacks on Gaza.

Mr. Zakzaky’s three biological sons, Mahmud, Ahmad and Hamid as well as 32 other members of the Islamic Movement were shot dead.

Mahmud was a student of Almustapha University, Beirut, Ahmad a Chemical Engineering student of Shenyang University, China and Hamid an Aeronautical Engineering student of Xiang University, also in China.

A fourth son of the cleric, Ali, was shot in the leg. He survived, and is in hospital.

Mr. El-Zakzaky however told PREMIUM TIMES that five days after the incident neither President Goodluck Jonathan nor agents of the Federal Government has made public statements on the matter.

“The government is yet to contact me. As you know the President is yet to make any public statement on the matter. The Minister of Defence is also yet to do that. What has happened has happened. And people have been coming to see me,” he said.

He explained that his group was on a peaceful procession that day and did not in anyway provoke the soldiers.

However, Defence spokesman, Chris Olukolade, a major general said the military would investigate the matter to establish who was wrong.

He said soldiers do not take delight in killing anybody.

Mr. Olukolade added, “The people from within that crowd shot at soldiers. We don’t want to be drawn into any controversy. We are interested in ascertaining what really happened.”

The defence spokesperson however rejected Mr. El-Zakzaky’s claim that the military and the government had not reached out to him.

“On the day of the incident, the officers in Zaria met him, had discussions with him and even exchanged telephone numbers with him,” Mr. Olukolade said. “And we have since said we need to investigate what really happened that day so we know how to proceed.”

When contacted, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, said it was not true that the federal government had not contacted Mr. El-Zakzaky.

“That’s not true,” Mr. Abati said. “The incident occured on Friday. The National Security Adviser contacted him on Saturday and condoled him. He also assured him that the incident would be thoroughly investigated.

“The Chief of Army Staff has also initiated investigation into the incident.”

Israeli soldiers killed

Three more Israeli soldiers were killed Wednesday, bringing the total to 56 dead since Operation Protective Edge began July 8. Three civilians also have been killed in Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces said the soldiers were uncovering a tunnel shaft in a home in southern Gaza. "The house and the tunnel were booby trapped with two explosive devices that were detonated," the IDF said.

Hamas said its fighters "lured a special Zionist unit which consisted of between 15 to 20 soldiers to a booby-trapped house with 12 IED canisters."

Twenty-seven Israeli soldiers were wounded in several incidents Wednesday in Gaza, the IDF said.
PoliticsDon’t Joke With Shiite Killings, Shehu Sani Advises President Jonathan by Onyocha(op): 8:28pm On Jul 30, 2014
by SAHARAREPORTERS, NEW YORK

Jul 30, 2014

The President of Civil Rights Congress (CRC), Comrade Shehu Sani, has warned President Goodluck Jonathan not to joke with the killing of innocent Shiite members in Zaria, Kaduna State, by soldiers.

In a statement, Sani called on the Federal Government to set up an investigation committee to look into the killings, noting that the security agencies are cultivating another crisis despite the country being unable to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency.

Referring to the members of the Sheikh El Zakzaki-led Islamic movement in Zaria who were killed in the incident, Sani said, “We have learnt that members of the movement were fired at while on their yearly peaceful procession, in solidarity with the people of Palestine, which as a result also led to the death of three children of Sheikh El zakzaki,” unreservedly condemning the shootings.

“The killings are cruel, inhuman, barbaric and a dangerous act with wider security implications for the peace and stability of our country. Its most unfortunate and sad that our security forces have not learnt their lessons on the grievous implications of cold blood killings of religious leaders or their faithfuls. While the nation is still battling with the insurgency in the north east, which was triggered by the extra judicial killing of Mohammed Yusuf in 2009, a new front is deliberately and mischievously ignited by the Nigerian soldiers.”

He described the tragic incident in Zaria as a clear testimony that Nigeria’s security forces are a part of the problem. The unprovoked attack and killing of the members of the movement is a reprehensible and abominable act capable of triggering a wider bloodletting and endless conflict. The impunity and brigandage by our security forces undermines the peace and stability of our country and by extension the authority and credibility of the Government.”

He stressed that security forces established, recognized and funded by constitutional guarantees must operate within the ambit of the laws and democratic tenets, but observed that Nigerians live in fear of both the insurgents and the military.

In that regard, Sani stated that security institutions must conform to and respect the fundamental rights of Nigerians as guaranteed by the constitution, and called on President Jonathan to take charge and accept responsibility for the situation on the ground as the buck stops on his table.

“A systematic policy and strategy of gross rights violations by security forces in the guise or excuse of fighting terrorism is unacceptable,” the statement said.

“Shooting peaceful protesters is tantamount to encouraging armed rebellion. Killing peaceful protesters is the most potent justification for violent causes. Our exigent need to end insurgency in the north east must not be at the price of the life and liberties of other innocent Nigerians. The Federal Government must investigate the killings of the members of the Islamic movement and bring to book all those who perpetrated this despicable and callous act.”

Foreign AffairsMeshal To Charlie Rose: Hamas Doesn't Fight Jews, It Fights The Occupiers by Onyocha(op): 2:38pm On Jul 28, 2014
By Haaretz | Jul. 28, 2014 | 3:50 PM

WATCH: In interview with CBS, Hamas leader Khaled Meshal manages to avoid directly answering question about recognizing Israel as a Jewish state.

Hamas political leader Khaled Meshal managed to avoid directly answering the question of whether Hamas would recognize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state in an interview with CBS host Charlie Rose.

In the interview, which aired on "Face the Nation" on Sunday, Meshal said, "When we have a Palestinian state then the Palestinian state will decide on its policies. You cannot actually ask me about the future."

Earlier in the interview, the Qatar-based Hamas leader said he was "ready to coexist" with Jews and Christians, but added, "I do not want to live with a state of the occupiers."

"We are not fanatics; we are not fundamentalists. We do not actually fight the Jews because they are Jews per se. We do not fight any other races. We fight the occupiers," Meshal told Rose.

Sunday was the 20th day of Israel's Operation Protective Edge in the Gaza Strip, and 10 days since the Israeli army launched its ground incursion into the strip. Egypt and U.S.-brokered cease-fire efforts had still not borne fruit on Sunday. Some 1,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza during the fighting, while 43 Israeli soldiers and 3 civilians have been killed.

Regarding Hamas' demand to lift the blockade on the Gaza Strip in exchange for a truce, Meshal said, "Life is not a prerequisite. Life is a right for our people in Palestine," he said. "This is a collective punishment; we need to lift the siege. We have to have a port. We have to have an airport. This is the first message. The second message in order to stop the bloodletting we need to look at the underlying causes, we need to look at the occupation,we have to stop the occupation."

Meshal also told Rose that the breakdown in peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians earlier this year was Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's fault.

"Netanyahu doesn't take heed of our rights. Netanyahu has killed our hope, has killed our dream, and he has killed the American initiative," he said, referring to U.S.-brokered negotiations.

The interview will be aired in full on PBS, and additional segments will be broadcast on "CBS This Morning" on Monday.

aren't there protesters in support of the Palestinians even in Europe and America? you should read in the news how pro- Palestinian protesters clash with pro-Israel protesters in Paris, and also both groups clash with the police. how many did the French police kill? and is there a state of emergency in Kaduna for the army to take law into their hands? there is no state of emergency. so why did the army have to go to the protest zone, and not the police? so many questions and all these questions have answers that cannot justify this brutality in Zaria against Nigerians, regardless of their background or religion.

Hamas: We killed 90 Israeli troops

Sun Jul 27, 2014 12:52PM GMT

Al-Qassam Brigades, which is the military wing of Hamas, says Palestinian resistance fighters have killed at least 90 Israeli soldiers over the past 20 days.

Palestinian fighters say over 90 Israeli forces have been killed in the ongoing offensive against the besieged Palestinian enclave. Based on Israeli media reports, at least 142 soldiers are in hospital, one of them in critical condition.

The Israeli army also says 43 soldiers have died since July 8.

Also on Sunday, at least one Israeli soldier was killed by a shell fired from the Gaza Strip.

This is seen as the heaviest loss of life for the Israeli military in years

Israel has kept tight reins on media outlets with regards to the exact number of Israeli soldiers captured or killed during its ongoing assault on the besieged coastal enclave.

The rising death toll of Israeli forces during the ongoing assault on Gaza Strip has prompted growing opposition to the war among the Israeli public.

Thousands of Israelis have rallied against Tel Aviv’s war on the Gaza Strip.

Demonstrators from left-wing and anti-war activists gathered in Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square despite police calls urging them not to attend the rally.

They carried banners reading “End the Occupation” and “Stop the Massacre in Gaza”. They also chanted slogans against Israeli officials for what they called dragging Israel into repeated wars and military actions.

At least four demonstrators were arrested after they tried to block a nearby street.

More than 1060 Palestinians have so far been killed and over 6000 wounded since the Israeli military first launched its onslaught on the Palestinian enclave on July 8.

its like the proliferation of the same nonsense that has been trashed earlier on in the thread is the norm with bigots. what made them "terrorists"? and how could they have shot at soldiers? what is the reason exactly they would do that? how many of the guns they used to shoot at soldiers were seized? how many of the gunmen were arrested? why were two of the children in army custody killed? why would "terrorists" who shoot at soldiers take their children, women and elderly to conduct a religious procession? from what i have heard, the pro-Palestinian rally Zakzaky holds along with other Shias worldwise really annoys the israelis, and he himself has been a target of assassination previously.

i think your silly bigoted questions would keep being repeated, but i've got no patience to spoon-feed every idiot who browses with a mobile phone and gets cheap access to the internet.

Whether U want to tell Urself the truth or not, those protesters drew the first blood. A soldier was shot in the arm... Who shot him? Let's not allow our emotions to becloud our reasoning. Those guys clearly went out of their way to invite death... Its a pity

When they refused to disperse from the highway, the soldiers made effort to clear the road and that was when they attacked the soldiers and even had the guts to attempt disarming a soldier.
What do U expect, my friend? That is asking for death! These guys behead Nigerian soldiers in the North for God's sake. Let's not politicise this incident
i don't think Aminu Ogwuche (or whatever his name is) was busy protesting on the streets. and he isn't a mob but a bloodsucker and criminal terrorist. so your analogy doesn't hold water.

i wonder if these same soldiers would shoot at Christian worshipers attending Redeem Christian Church crusades who block roads for many hours along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. apart, the questions that must be investigated is where did the soldiers originate from-from which base-and where were they heading to.

your generalization using a term like "these guys" is very sick to the stomach. these guys here are "Shi'ite Muslims". they have nothing to do with boko haram who are extremist Sunni Muslims called "Wahhabi" or "Salafist". in fact, the two groups do not even see eye to eye. when i first heard that Shi'ites were targted in Zaria, the first thought that came to my mind was that boko haram has struck the Shi'ites on sectarian grounds.

so the price to pay for a child "trying to make his father proud" is killing the child!!! cool in which kingdom do you live, in all honesty?

one was killed in the protest, and in fact, 3 were taken away. 2 were shot in custody and the 1 (Ali) had his legs broken.

as for your question about whether i have "evidence", i think i should also ask you: "do you have evidence they were not in fact taken from their home"? you are asking for "evidence" where you had none, and i am not claiming either to have. but going by the reports, and as a human being with a fair mind devoid of prejudice and sentiments, one can easily see injustice committed. and as such, and as people who value their freedom, injustice should be brought to book and the law must take its course.

"no smoke without a fire" plays in both ways. there won't be questions on the base of origin of soldiers if there was a smoke without a fire!

so it is until 350 people, not just 35, are killed before you are convinced that there is more to this than we know? how can three sons of one man be killed in cold blood? and guess what? two of the sons were taken by the soldiers ALIVE!!! They were said to be ALIVE, and then summarily executed. even if they were criminals of the highest order, and they indeed shot at the soldiers, at least some decent court proceedings to treat criminals as they deserve to be treated should have been conducted. and please, take note again that they were taken ALIVE, so there is no excuse that the soldiers were reacting. reacting after their arrest?

You are also basing your accusations on assumption and speculations.
Like I said I despise the loss of human lives, but trying to whip up sentiments by your unfounded accusations may even lead to the loss of more lives.
i am not putting any sentiments or assumptions. there are valid questions that should be answered. simple. this rally has been conducted for three decades in Zaria, as well as in many other cities in Nigeria, and even in London, New York and Paris... what went wrong this time around?

the commemoration of Quds Days doesn't even qualify to be called a "protest". it is rightly called a rally. it isn't meant to fight, and not even to condemn anyone or Israel, but to show solidarity to the weak and oppressed people of the world, and in particular the Palestinians. i wonder what sort of "violent protest" in Nigeria would have its conductors take women, children and elderly to execute it. are you for real? when you come to post on public forums, try first to read. in that way you can have some substance to share with others, and not just waste the time of others reading whatever you feel like posting. read about what is Quds Day.

The most brutal of terrorists are very intelligent and hardcore professionals in their respective fields.
And please before you misquote me again, I did not say they are terrorists.
your above is pure speculation and assumption. if they are victims of unfortunate circumstances, among the 35 killed were women and children. can you tell us how many among the dead were "gunmen"? how many guns were the soldiers able to seize? why on Saturday, after the Friday massacre, did soldiers continue their happy-trigger killings? why did they on Saturday go on to shoot at the mosque of Zakzaky and kill another three of his followers? and in all these and your attempt to vindicate the soldiers and trying your hard based on assumptions, and of course prejudice because the victims are northerners and Muslims, how many of the soldiers (who you want to sell to us as the victims) were injured or killed?

the questions that still pose themselves and can clear up all the arguments are: if the head of the military battalion in Kaduna wasn't aware of the presence of these soldiers, who sent them?; what was their motives?; where did they come from? for what?; under whose instruction?

However, when one opens fire on a group of military men, then they are left with no choice than to defend themselves.
it is like you don't read. or some people just enjoy spreading mischief, like the clown who earlier accused Zakzaky of kidnapping soldiers.

anyways, this procession was peaceful and no one shot at the soldiers. it has already concluded when the shots were fired by the soldiers. in the procession, there were women, children and elderly people. to what end would these protesters shoot at soldiers?

even if we are to go a step further, let us for argument sake say that "SOMEONE" (in capital letters) shot at the soldiers. does that warrant the soldiers going happy-trigger at defenseless civilians, or in their midst, and shoot anyone at sight? how many soldiers were injured or killed? could the soldiers not arrest the shooter,if there was one, instead of perpetrating a massacre? what if that SOMEONE (again in capital letters) was a saboteur whose sole aim was to get things bloody by provoking an attack and triggering a response from the soldiers?

these are all arguments made for the sake of arguing, and comments made by people who don't think before they comment, and who do not have any sense of humanity to feel for the oppressed or victims of an injustice.

the point of the matter that can settle all these arguments is where did the soldiers originate from? from the details already posted it is said that they are not from Kaduna. the head of the battalion in Kaduna had no idea of their presence or whereabouts and neither of their movement. the governor too, who is the ruler of the state, wasn't aware. so where did the soldiers come from? what was their motives? and where were they heading to? do soldiers take to the Lagos-Ibadan expressway to shoot at Christian worshipers when Redeem Christian Church is holding its crusades that block traffic on the expressway for hours? in other words how did these soldiers find their way in the midst of protesters? these are questions that beg for answers. aside, this should be taken seriously because it is a dangerous precedence of injustice and lawlessness that if not treated quickly poses danger to life and security. would one feel safe if the perpetrators are not brought to justice?

Adindupeter: . Who cares??. Protest my foot. How many times have they protested against Boko Haram?. Now I'm beginning to believe the stereotype that an average northern Muslim is a potential terrorist.
so in the animal kingdom you live in when someone doesn't protest against the ones you are against and the someone goes on to protest against another form of injustice elsewhere, that someone's punishment is to be shot at sight in an extra-judicial manner? the Quds day procession is more or less a religious observance for Shi'ites across the globe. the procession was held even in London, New York, and Paris. furthermore, the Shi'ite Muslims in Zaria, as also elsewhere in the country, have conducted this peaceful rally for over three decades without any hitch! why this year there is problem? do people deserve to be shot for holding a procession even if you don't like the idea or you think they are silly and they are misplacing their priorities? so whenever someone doesn't know his priorities and he goes on to hold a peaceful protest, that someone would be taught his "priorities", or rather your own priority, through the sound of bullets. shame! angry

today it is the Shi'ites, and God knows whose turn this lawlessness would target. how can people feel safe in such atmosphere of anarchy and insecurity?

Kudos to Nigeria Army!!!!!
you are a devilish criminal and extremist just like boko haram. you celebrate the killing and oppression of helpless civilians, but you expect others to sympathize with you when your criminal likes blow up Christians. what is the difference between those who kill innocent Christians and those who kill innocent Muslims?

does not protesting against boko haram justify extra-judicial killing of civilians who are protesting against another form of injustice somewhere else? al-Quds Day to Shi'ites is more or less a religious observance.

when your Redeemed Christian Church block roads and keep people hours on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, how many times has the army shot at Christian worshipers? the motives behind the Zaria massacre should be revealed. there is more into this incident than we know. today it is Shi'ite Muslims that are killed in cold blood, and God knows whose turn it might be tomorrow if such lawlessness and anarchy is not eliminated. do you feel safe living where lawlessness thrives and the rule of law is not observed?

your likes are not to be taken seriously. you are just criminal minded. the same people like you want Muslims to condemn boko haram and their crimes, yet, when it comes to the killing of Muslims (be they Shia or Sunnis) you celebrate. why are you supporting extra-judicial killing of innocent civilians? this is turning into a massacre.

gidjah: IS THAT ONE ON D WORLD CALENDAR TOO?!DOES IT HAPPEN IN YOUR STATE AND ON YOUR STREET TOO?IS THIS THE RIGHT TIME IN THE ANALS OF THIS NATION TO HAVE PROTEST INTROUBLE AREAS?IS this not a tool in d hands of the already domiciled insurgents in zaria city?i lived in that city for about 8yrs bro,i stil live up north till date
it happens where those who are concerned with it are found. according to the reports, the same event was marked in Kano, Katsina and other cities in Nigeria.

if it was boko haram who are Salafists that targeted the Shia, i can understand. your beating around the bush is implying that even embarking on a peaceful demonstration in the presence of the security men who should protect the lives of their citizens is unsafe. is that what you're implying? you are giving excuses simply because those killed are Muslims. if it was those protesting to "bringbackourgirls" who were targeted, i dont think you would find excuses for those who perpetrated the attack. any life lost is a sad thing. i think the incident should be thoroughly investigated and those at fault should be brought before the law.
