PoliticsRe: Zaria Killings: El-rufai Bans Shi’ites, Others From Blocking Roads by Onyocha: 10:37pm On Dec 17, 2015
El Rufai talking about assassination and ambush, and then referring to the video where soldiers are seen pleading with the angry youth.i think the former claim does not hold. i did not see any ambush in that video. to "ambush" means to lay waiting to attack. there was a road block and not an ambush and clearly no assassination attempt from the parts we could see in the video released.

aside, he did not tell us why the army sent for reinforcements after the army chief had passed, and then attacked the sheikh's house and the prayer hall. that is if the road block was accidental and the youths were not reacting to the claim by the Islamic Movement that the attack on the prayer hall started even before the road block incident. El Rufai stating the prayer hall isnt legal makes one to think that the demolition was already pre-planned, and the Islamic Movement claim that the attack on the hussainiyyah (Shiite prayer hall) was before the road block could be very much true.

even if there should be demolition, why send soldiers who kill to demolish buildings when a religious occasion was taking place and many thousands of people were converging on the religious site? why didnt the police handle this? El Rufai is a trademark name for demolitions everywhere like Y'ello and MTN! and how are we to believe a building standing has been an illegal structure for many years? and did the government deny the organization permit to build that led them to put up their building in disregard of laws? the more they are telling us, the more questions we are having.

he did not mention about the fate of the dead bodies claimed today in a report to have been buried in mass graves to conceal the toll, and he did not mention about the whereabout of the sheikh and his family members. this was the same el rufai who visited Zakzaky in January in his "illegal structures". back then, when el rufai was campaigning and seeking votes and political support, he perhaps turned a blind eye that the sheikh he was visiting was using an "illegal building"!

the below are pics of el rufai in january visiting Zakzaky in the "illegal" building! tongue tongue tongue

God will not forgive all of you who wish this country evil. You shut your eyes to the truth when it best suits your needs.... What the Army did is small in my opinion, when you threaten the sovereignty and total authority of our nation, we will respond with brute force. If you want to worship your God do it in your closet and not on our public road.

Did you see the guy with the scarf wrapped round his neck, making claims that even buhari cannot use that road at that time and when the general tried to let him see reason, he kept gallivanting in a threatening manner... They got less than what they deserve and I hope that guy was one of the people the army shot.
Mr. Rambo, you have killed them on the road, why follow them into their houses and worship center? is that how life is cheap to you?

honestly speaking, what happened on the road is very much irrelevant. Both sides are wrong there.

What is relevant to me is that the army used the earlier road incident as excuse/cover up/pretext to launch two assaults at the worship center and at the cleric's home. During the siege and raid many were killed and the structures got demolished. These are crimes against humanity committed and human rights violations. No one really care that the army reacted -by taking law into their hands -to road block and many understand that the blocking of road and confronting soldiers who don't value lives is wrong. The problem is the siege on the house and the hussainiyyah.

Many are distracted by what happened on the road. The army is using the road incident to cover up their assault on and demolition of the house and hussainiyyah. Many lives were wasted. That is wrong and unjustifiable even under military rule.

The siege and assault on the home and worship center came after the road incident had ended. Why?

The COAS should please not resign. He should either remain and continue to tarnish the image of the APC government and the image of the country, or let him be sacked immediately and punished for his crimes. This is a democracy and no one should be a victim of religious persecution. Citizens should be free to choose what beliefs they want to follow.

The Shiites should not have blocked the road, freedom of religion should not be used as an excuse to constitute a nuisance to the public and disrespect public officials especially not the Nigerian army that is known for being brutal. I've seen where such religious groups take over the road without police permission, and no one is able to do anything about it. They'll think twice before being stubborn next time.
So when some members of an organization clash with the army on the road, you justify for their worship center and homes to be attacked and demolished in other locations? This sounds like Boko action.

Did the boy come with a weapon like the Shiite Muslims did? He didn't, thats why you don't see a swiss-cheesed body full of bullet holes laying on the ground.
If it was in Nigeria, the army would have checked if the teenager has a ring on his hand. Then the ring would be called a weapon and the slap an assassination attempt. Just like the way catapults, sticks and stones held by some of the Shiites became objects of assassination on the army chief who was heavily guarded by well armed soldiers.

How many more people will continue to display stupidity?

The question many are not asking is how does the blocking of road and the road incident that earlier happened give right for the army to later on bring reinforcements and to lay siege and attack the cleric's house and worship center? The attacks were at three locations. And the buildings got demolished. In whose name?

olapluto:
A few inferences from the videos going around:
1. The Shias were not peaceful. They clearly refused pacifications by the Nigerian army spokesman (who risked his life in approaching them).
2. The Nigerian army DID NOT set out on that day to kill Shias.
3. The video released by the Shia on this post is even exonerating the army. The soldiers can be seen guarding the road in order to let the COAS pass.
4. The attack on the Hussainiya is being investigated by the army.
5. The death of people is very sad and unfortunate. We can only pray for the families grieving
6. It will be very hard to nail the Nigerian army on the cross, with the videos released so far...unfortunately.
Moving forward, Shias should stop blocking roads and constituting a law unto themselves. This entails all religious sects too (including RCCG on Lagos-Ibadan expressway).
Mr Zakzaky should henceforth reign on his followers to respect the Nigerian law. If they are not comfortable with the Nigerian law vis a vis Shia practices, I suggest they should all apply for Iranian visas and citizenship.
All the story story you wrote beating around the bush really centers on two points:

1. The Shia blocked the road and the army shot and killed them to clear the road.

2. The hussainiyyah and Zakzaky's house got attacked later on as revenge and many got wasted by the army. In other words state terrorism.

Pictures are circulating online and on newspapers of a destroyed hussainiyyah and house. Mr. Sani Usman, spokesman of the army, in the video you posted couldn't deny it. So when asked by the broadcaster in the interview what took the army to zakzakys house, he said an enquiry is going on and he can't comment. You still find him credible to believe his "facts" and come feed us BS here?

Senator Shehu Sani has indicted President Muhammadu Buhari over the killings of Shiite in Zaria, Kaduna State by Nigerian soldiers last Saturday.

The lawmaker representing Kaduna central senatorial district, also said the clash between the military and the Shiite sect shows that the country was yet to learn anything from the “painful experiences” of the past.

While condemning the action of the Shi’ite for attacking the convoy of the chief of army staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Burutai, he said the military should not have used force on them.

In a statement on Tuesday. He said, “silence amounts to nothing but aiding and abetting a clear and undisguised abuse of fundamental human rights.

“The attacks on the homes and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria is nothing but an indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force by the military.

“Silence and neutrality to this amounts (sic) to nothing but aiding and abetting a clear and undisguised abuse of fundamental human rights.

“It’s absolutely wrong for the members of the group to deny the convoy of the chief of army staff the right of passage.

“However, killings and arson is not the legal, civilized and proportionate response to “road blockage.

“Nigeria is a democratic state, the professional conduct of the apparatus of the state must be done within the ambit of the law and respect for fundamental rights of the citizenry.

“Nigeria as a democratic state must learn to balance its security exigencies with the need to observe and uphold its constitutional and moral obligation to fundamental human rights of its citizens.

“Any excuse to circumvent human rights, is a step towards tyranny. Northern Nigeria have in the last seven years been neck deep in violence and soaked in blood opening a new front will not augur well for the peace and stability of Nigeria.

“The Zaria killings simply affirmed the fact that as a nation we have not learnt our lessons from our painful and hard experience. The action of the military is untenable, intolerable and unacceptable and has a serious repercussion to our global image, perception and moral standing.

“In the light of our recent experiences, it’s in the best security interest of our nation to encourage and support religious groups to operate openly.

“The Islamic movement and their leader have repeatedly denounce terrorism and insurgency. Zaria killings were avoidable. The use of force must always be the last resort and not the first resort and must be done within the principles of internationally best practices of rules of engagement.

“We have a duty as patriots to support our military to protect and defend our country, but it must be held to account within the permissible line of morality and the law. Those who are in support of the Zaria killings are giving a helping hand to arbitrariness and spitting on a fundamental right that may be used against them someday. The enduring spirit of a democratic state is upholding its moral values and achieving its goals. Our ultimate goal of restoring peace and order in our country must not be at the expense of sacrificing those very principles that distinctively separate us from those oppose to our democratic values.

“The right to life and human dignity is foundation upon which all other rights stand. We must learn to defeat ideas with superior ideas and not superior spears.
“I call for peace and justice. I call on President Muhammadu Buhari to launch a full scale investigation.”

The below video is circulating online, and particularly on Facebook by Shiites. the video counters the claim of the earlier video released today purportedly by the Nigerian Army showing Islamic Movement in Nigeria followers blocking the way of the Army Chief. according to this counter-video, there was already an attack staged by the army on the Shiite Hussainiyyah (prayer hall) unprovoked and during broad daylight. based on the purported video, the attack on the Hussainiyyah started before the way was blocked on the COAS, and it did not start at night after the road block clash, which is seen as the primary cause of events, that the army later on escalated to cover the Hussainiyyah and Zakzaky's house in their attack. accordingly, the claim is that the road block was a reaction, and not the instigator or primary cause of the tragic events. the below videos shows soldiers dragging followers of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and shooting while screams can be heard in the background.

the video is titled:

"The Attack of the Nigerian Army at Hussainiyyah Baqiyatullah before the Coming of the Chief of Army Staff".

PoliticsLetter To President Buhari Over The Zaria Killings Of Shiites By The Army by Onyocha(op): 4:41pm On Dec 16, 2015
“The appropriate thing to do, according to the law, was for the police to carry out investigations and charge him (Mohammed Yusuf) to court for prosecution, but they killed him, his in-law was killed, they went and demolished their houses. Because of that, his supporters resorted to what they are doing today." ~ Muhammadu Buhari, June 2, 2013

Zaria Massacre: A Letter To President Muhammadu Buhari

Dear Sir,

I write to register my displeasure, as a concerned citizen of Nigeria, over the killing of defenseless citizens of this country by the Nigerian Army at the weekend in Zaria.

I am sure you received a briefing from your National Security Adviser over the incident. I know, in your daily bulletin, internal and external security challenges were captured, with pictorial attachments to boot. I know on your press clippings, your media office highlighted major issues for you. As addict of international Hausa radio services, you may have heard their lead stories regarding your country. I'm sure you know, more than anybody else, what happened in Zaria.

By way of rehashing, may I inform you that armed soldiers laid a siege on the residence of the leader of Shiite movement in Nigeria, Ibrahim Elzakzaky, killed hundreds of people, demolished his house and bombed the group's sanctuary at the weekend.

I know they told you the killing of the hundreds was precipitated by the Shiite adherents' effrontery, as they denied the convoy of your Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, passage through the area. Yes, it is true.

Permit me to tell you that my heart bled when I spoke with a friend working at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika. He told me 172 bodies including women and children, were registered in that hospital alone, adding that dozens other bodies were deposited in other hospitals.

I know your commitment towards fight against terrorism, but despite that I doubt, just doubting, if Nigerian troops had killed 172 Boko Haram insurgents, in spite of your spirited efforts in the last six months.

Sir, the magnitude of the Zaria crackdown tells one that such operation could not be executed without the express orders of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

May I kindly remind you about the principle of rule of tacit admission, hinged on an ancient maxim of common law that says "silence gives consent".

Dear Mr. President, your deafening silence, is construed as admission to even some of your fanatical supporters.

Sir, I am surprised that as a person who repeatedly condemned killings of civilians, particularly in the North East, such atrocities are happening under your watch – and even command – as a C-in-C without uttering a word.

Your Excellency, a few years ago you remember how we supported and defended you when you criticized your predecessor and cautioned the military on rules of engagement and violation of citizens' rights.

Sir, when you were hosted to that popular radio programme, "Bakonmu Na Mako" on Liberty Radio on June 2, you reechoed your standpoint on human rights violation and rules of engagement.

I hope I won't bother you a lot if I reproduce some of your words during the interview, criticizing late Umaru Yar'Adua of killing members of Boko Haram without subjecting them to trial.

“The appropriate thing to do," you said during the June 2, 2013 interview, "according to the law, was for the police to carry out investigations and charge him (Mohammed Yusuf) to court for prosecution, but they killed him, his in-law was killed, they went and demolished their houses. Because of that, his supporters resorted to what they are doing today."

Your Excellency, you never denied saying these foregoing words, advocating justice to even those who took firearms and explosives against the state.

Yes, we have seen pictures of the Shiites bearing cudgels, slingshots and machetes but we have not seen one picture showing them bearing a gun, even a dane gun.

My fear is (as you noted in 2013) the after-effect of violent repression that lead to the death of prominent members of the Shiite group and demolition of their house and shrine.

I must agree with you that the excesses of Shiite members are becoming refractory, out of hand, but I must disagree with you that such bloody crackdown by your government is the solution.

Whenever I remember past events and noose them together with current events, I shook my head and smiled.

I remember joining you to criticize your predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, for silence and failure to act over the abduction of over 200 school girls.

I shook my head in disbelief that you are silent days after at least 200 people were massacred in Zaria.

Accept my warmest regards, please.

Sincerely,

Jaafar Jaafar

Because the Shia people had plans to carry out retaliatory attacks after they were dispersed.
So I guess the military felt they had to be weakened.
Sounds very smart but false.

Last year, three of zakzakys sons and thirty of his followers were killed by the same army. Why didn't he retaliate? Instead if retaliation, Zakzaky went to court and asked the government to bring the perpetrators to justice.yet, the government turned a deaf ear.

Also what happens to "innocent until proven guilty"? Do you kill people on suspicion of retaliation? So killing people in a worship center and in a house is good?

Onyocha:
i have watched the video released showing army officers asking Shites to clear the road. It is obvious that the Shiite followers of Zakzaky mistrust the army because of last year's tragic incident under the Jonathan administration, when three of Zakzaky's sons were killed and thirty members of his Islamic Movement in Nigeria.

Undoubtedly, the army can claim anything after watching this video. Both sides could have avoided this incident by letting go their ego. The Shiites brought death upon themselves by blocking the road and confronting soldiers who don't value civilian life and play by democratic rules. This was suicidal in my view on the side of the Shiites. The Zakzaky followers provoked the soldiers going by this video. We however don't know what the soldiers mission was on that road and if the sect members felt threatened or thought the soldiers were on their way going to kill their leaders so they blocked the road and insisted not to clear. There is need for more details especially that the video is cut at one point.

However, let us go by the narration and video we have at hand. The soldiers have "protected" themselves, refused to turn back and cleared the way and have killed those blocking the road.at this point, it is still a road blocking clash and things have happened.

What is left to be understood is after the soldiers have cleared the way, why did they proceed to the Hussainiyyah and shot at sight and destroy the Islamic center? Why did they also go ahead to destroy the sheikh's house and shoot him and his family members? After the road blocking incident, the soldiers continued on the rampage on three different locations synonymous with the Islamic movement in Nigeria, far away from the road blocking incident location. More or less, it was revenge attacks and "lesson teaching" mission by soldiers. The Zakzaky followers were too overzealous and bold to confront the army and they are wrong to display stones, machetes and sticks in front of armed soldiers. That incident has passed. Why did the soldiers continue the attacks and extra judicial killings? I expect them to exercise restraint. And even if the sheikh was to be cautioned, the police or other ways should have been employed to caution him or even arrest him in a democratic dispensation.

So clearly, the video explains the trigger and the mistrust and misunderstanding that happened and both sides lost it and the movement members more or less committed suicide.

After the road block wahala had ended, the soldiers totally lost it and took law into their hands and went on revenge attacks and extra judicial killings. Things are not done like that in democracy. There is police and rule of law.

That is my opinion and you may agree or disagree. What is on ground is pitiful. Hundreds have been killed and properties destroyed. Many homes have been wounded.

May the dead RIP!

We hope justice will prevail and impunity will not continue. Had Jonathan done the needed last year when three of the sheikh's sons were killed along thirty others, a lasting solution could have been found to end the problem of road blocks and mistrust. There is need for confidence building measures and trust with the Islamic Movement in Nigeria to be put in place by the government to reassure everyone that no one is target simply for their beliefs or what they practice and then look for ways of cooperation and understanding to avoid any future mistrust or tragedy.

The ppl that still think the army were aggressive didnt see the video footage where d army spokesman Col Kukah Sheka kept begging these touts while they kept chanting nd throwing stones to the contingent of number one soldier in Nigeria which includes many other generals. Infact; these ppl got less than they deserved. The military institution must be respected or else the sovereignty of Nigerian state would be put to question. You dont stay in Zaria to see the untold hardship ppl go thru wen ever these ppl are having their procession which happens regularly.
