Nigerian Troops Kill Sheik Zakzaky’s Son, Others In Zaria SaharaReporters has just confirmed that Mahumd Ibraheem Zakzaky, the son of Sheik Ibraheem Zakzaky, was among those gunned down by Nigerian soldiers in Zaria as a group held a rally in support of Palestinians on Israel’s invasion of Gaza. Mahmud Zakzaky and a few other demonstrators were killed in the shooting this evening in the ancient town of Zaria. In a statement issued by Ibrahim Musa, editor of the movement’s weekly magazine Almizan, and sent to the New York office of SaharaReporters, the Islamic group accused the military of killing several of its members with impunity. The statement also claimed that more than 40 other members sustained serious injuries. “Reports reaching our news desk now indicated that some soldiers of the Nigerian army have opened fire on the tail end of the Quds procession held after Jumaat prayers in Zaria, Kaduna State. The procession, which took off from Sabon Gari Jumaat Mosque, reached Kofar Doka peacefully with no incident. However some soldiers attacked the procession [at the] PZ junction in Zaria. “They shot Mahmud Ibraheem Zakzaky, but [his body] was taken away by the Muslim brothers. But several [other] Muslim brothers were shot by the security agents. “As at the time of writing this report, there is no confirmation on the number of Muslim brothers shot or killed by the soldiers, but our says say five people were killed. The Quds procession was held today peacefully in more than 10 Nigerian cities. Why the attack on the Zaria procession? “[The] latest report on the attack by soldiers on Quds peaceful procession is that ten Muslim brothers were gunned down by the soldiers, among them Mahmud Ibraheem Zakzaky, son of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, and a Muslim sister with her child on her back. There are over 40 Muslim brothers’ casualties with different degrees of gunshots by the soldiers. The story is still unfolding, with reinforcement of soldiers coming from Kaduna, according to our news sources.” http://saharareporters.com/2014/07/25/nigerian-troops-kill-sheik-zakzaky%E2%80%99s-son-others-zaria |
Pro-Palestinian Protest Turns Bloody In Zaria, As Troops Kill 5 Shiite Muslims Although details are still sketchy, a security source said a full investigation is underway to determine the cause of the clash. Nigerian troops have reportedly killed at least 5 persons from a Muslim Shiite group in Zaria, Kaduna State of Shiites under the leadership of Sheik Ibraheem Zakzaky. Sources told SaharaReporters that soldiers opened fire on members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria during an annual procession called ‘Quds Day’ in solidarity with Palestinians under Isreali attacks in Gaza. The clash happened at PZ area on Sabon Gari Road. A convoy of soldiers from the Zaria Army deport reportedly ran out patience after waiting for 35 minutes for the procession to end. As they meant to leave, someone in the crowd reportedly opened fire as the protesters blocked the road. Today's event, a source in Zaria told Saharareporters, holds the last Friday of every Ramadan fasting season. However, this year's procession was dedicated to the Palestinian people in Gaza. Although details are still sketchy, a security source said a full investigation is underway to determine the cause of the clash. Mr. Zakzakky is an implacable foe of Islamist sect Boko Haram, a reason why today's clash between the sect and Nigerian troops remains a mystery. As at the time of publishing this report, it was said that tension is still high in the town. And both military and Shiites are yet to react official regarding cause of the killings. The development is coming barely two days after General Muhammadu Buhari (rtf) and and an Islamic cleric, Sheik Dahiru Bauchi escaped bombing attacks by suspected terrorists. http://saharareporters.com/2014/07/25/pro-palestinian-protest-turns-bloody-zaria-troops-kill-5-shiite-muslims |

Mira Bar Hillel Tuesday 22 July 2014 Israel has discovered that it's no longer so easy to get away with murder in the age of social media All you now need is a mobile phone and a Twitter account to hold power to account, and help change history https://www.independent.co.uk/incoming/article9618273.ece/alternates/w620/Gaza-11.jpg It used to be said that a lie goes twice around the world before the truth has put its shoes on. Not any more. I arrived in Israel on Christmas Eve 2008, the date chosen by Israel to launch Operation Cast Lead, an attack to end all attacks on Gaza. The tanks rolled in, killing over 1,300 people, many of them women and children, and reducing their homes, schools and hospitals to rubble. But all I heard from the media was that some Israelis were very, very scared because a few primitive rockets were being sent from Gaza into southern Israel. Reporters were not allowed into Gaza and Israeli soldiers were banned from taking on mobile phones for security reasons. So the 2008/9 massacre, which included use of the banned White Phosphorus, went un-witnessed and almost unreported. It also failed dismally in achieving its objective, as Hamas survived and the local population’s hatred of their arrogant oppressors burned as bright as the fires which consumed their homes. But for the “international community” it was “out of sight, out of mind”. Business as usual. What a difference a few years of developing technology can make. The Gaza atrocities are now being reported on a constant basis by eyewitnesses, be they professional correspondents representing major media organisations, or amateur locals under fire. Because all you need is a mobile phone and a Twitter account. It is those devices which brought us heart-rending images – some too horrific to be shown on television – of children with their limbs or half a head blown off. Children covered in shrapnel wounds screaming for dead parents; surviving parents carrying tiny bodies. Sights which caused the battle-hardened BBC correspondent Lyse Doucet to sob during a live broadcast. They are all on Twitter now, should you care to look. This is the shape of wars to come. Anything less than total nuclear annihilation will, from now on, be recorded for posterity by the victims, as well as the victors, in their own versions. Imagine if this was the case in Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur, not to mention earlier massacres. Historians will finally have both sides’ stories to work from, and the evidence with which to back up their words. In pictures: Israel-Gaza conflict But far more importantly, aggressors will have to live with the consequences of their acts, unable to hide behind hollow rhetoric. Because the Israelis had and have nothing with which to balance those images of bloodied, mangled little corpses in Gaza. Yes, as of today they continue to bludgeon Gaza in defiance of the UN Security Council and polite requests from John Kerry to stop. But they never cared about that. On the other hand, mass protests marches from California to Chile are taking their toll. The Israeli army is getting more resistance online than on the ground. It’s not used to it and cannot cope. http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/comment/israel-has-discovered-that-its-no-longer-so-easy-to-get-away-with-murder-in-the-age-of-social-media-9621379.html |
Two Israeli soldiers were killed Tuesday evening in fighting in Gaza Strip, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit says. The deceased are Capt. Dmitri Levitas, 26, of Jerusalem and Geshur and Capt. Natan Cohen, 23, of Modiin. They were both officers in the IDF armored corps. They were killed by sniper fire in the Gaza Strip. Over the last 24 hours, three soldiers were seriously wounded, nine were moderately wounded, and eight sustained light wounds. Since the Gaza operation began, 29 soldiers and officers were killed. PenSniper: I never knew these ANC people are such a bunch of fools. They ignored the kidnapping and merciless murder of 3 Israeli kids, the incessant rockets sent to attack civilians in Israel and accuse Israel for defending its people. Looks like the HIV virus has eaten deep into their collective brains. Israel, more grease to you elbows. Please dont agree to ceasefire until you have achieved your stated goal.fanatic, do you know the name of the Palestinian kid (Muhammad Abu Khudeir) who was kidnapped and burnt alive with gasoline by Israeli illegal settlers in the West Bank? but you are quick to repeat the killing of three israeli "teenagers" who in fact were israeli reservist soldiers in the israel army of terror, occupation, genocide, apartheid and ethnic cleanSing. what does the three israelis kidnapped in the west bank have to do with israel attacking hamas in gaza? what silliness are you people parroting? |
engineerd: PHUCK THE PALESTINIAN TWATS......THEIR HAMAS STARTED LOBBING ROCKETS INTO ISRAEL AND THESE IDIOTS JUST EXPECT ISRAEL TO FOLD IT'S HANDS? NOW ISRAEL'S 'RACISM' OR ISOLATION OR LAND GRABBING OF THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORY IS ANOTHER STORY....BUT CURRENTLY THE WAY I SEE IT IS SINCE THE PALESTINIANS HAVE OPTED TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE THROUGH ARMED RESISTANCE, THEN THEY BETTER BE READY TO ACCEPT THE COLLATERAL DAMAGE.....IN EVERY WAR, THE INNOCENTS USUALLY END UP SUFFERING THE MOST.....BOTH IDF AND HAMAS HAVE PROVEN THEMSELVES TO BE TERRORISTS......NEITHER OF THEM ARE OBSERVING THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT IN WAR TIME.fool! israel knows when it drops its bombs, civilians will die and mostly they fall on civilian buildings. but again, hamas is to blame. and who is hamas? are they not a palestinian organization fighting for palestinian freedom like the ANC was fighting for black freedom in south africa? oh wait! hamas are Muslims, so they must be terrorists!!! silly people!!! dont let boko haram or muslim extremists which the west have been proven time and again to support make you hate oppressed muslims who have a legitimate cause to fight for. israel is an apartheid state and it must stop its terror. the scholars, intellectuals, academicians, and prominent personalities including Jimmy Carter (former US president) who have stood up against israel to call it an apartheid state, are not fools. |
[b]the palestinians are not just fighting for statehood. they are fighting for life and land. there is ethnic-cleansing in palestine. the hausas didnt drive the igbos out of the south east and replace them with hausa/fulani tribes. palestine is being stolen from its original inhabitants by jews who are europeans just in the name of religion and being jewish. some of these jews are not even descended from Abraham at all but converts to judaism. most people have no idea who the palestinian people are simply because of prejudice that they are an arabic speaking people and most of them muslims. the palestinian christians for example happen to be the oldest christian community on earth. they are descendants of Jesus' disciples. apart, the land of palestine has never been exclusively jewish or even hebrew (jews descended from hebrews/israelites). the israelites themselves met people living already on the land (i.e. before Abraham, palestinians and israelis descended from, was born, there were people on the land; and yet still, there are some palestinians who claim descent from those pre-Abraham people known as canaanites). israelites too came and conquered it. the palestinians are descended from many races, ethnicities and nations that have all lived and ruled in palestine over the centuries. the arabians were the last to take over and rule palestine. so the people in palestine became arabic speaking, and they abandoned greek and aramaic. having anyone who is a jews, even in jupiter, return to palestine to "reclaim" the land, and worse, to drive away those on the land, is like having Voodoo worshipers from Haiti return to Nigeria to drive away Nigeria Christians and Muslims. the thing is even more complicated with palestine because the people who are indigenese are now arabic speaking and have abandoned their native tongues and intermarried with arabians. if Nigerians had become like sudanese and adopted arabic as mother tongue, then voodoo worshipers in haiti would ask the Nigerian Arabs to leave the land. worst, those Jews in europe are whites who themselves have intermarried with the whites in europe. they dont look middle eastern at all. a middle eastern jew isnt a white onyinbo person. they look middle eastern, not blonded with yellow hair and blue eyes. [b]i opened this thread and i didnt imagine the tons of ignorant comments that would flood my thread!!! ![]() may God have mercy on Nigerians who think Israeli Zionists are Israelites. this is thunder on my head!!! ![]() may God also have mercy on the fool who thinks Israelis are Christians and they are the "chosen people of God" whom God gave the land from the nile to the Euphrates. there is so much ignorance. if you dont know what is going on must you comment? why not shut up your dirty mouth? you hate hamas because they are Muslims and Israel has done enough to flood your head with propaganda and loosen the screws of your head that you cannot think by yourself. hamas is the democratically elected party ruling gaza. in other words, like the ANC was in south africa, hamas is in palestine fighting for the aspirations and dreams of their oppressed people. so you can now see the similarity between hamas and the ANC. but of course, christian fanaticism, and bible confusion wouldnt let people think. hamas are muslim so they are "terrorists". Mandela himself was once labeled a terrorist by the White Man. do you fools know that? did hamas broke the cease fire that was in place? no. it was israel that broke the truce and was killing palestinians and firing bombs at will. hamas responded with rockets. that aside, the palestinians have their land stolen, would they fold their arms and do nothing? if i were a gazan, would i fire rockets to free my land? gaza has been under siege for 8 good years. imagine you live in a land where you cannot fly, you cannot move, you cannot travel by sea, road or air. gaza is a concentration camp housing 2 million people thanks to the israeli siege. how many of us can live like that? the difference is the palestinians are a courageous people who have refused to abandon their land and their cause. they have remained put to resist israeli occupation. look at those helpless palestinian children using stones against israeli tanks? this is a courageous people. hamas is just the cover up for israel and its illegal and inhumane occupation and treatment of palestinians. the core of the problem is not hamas but the israeli occupation. and for those talking prophecy and bible and rubbish. please view my below post on that. Published on 22 July 2014 Written by The African National Congress in Parliament (ANC) Following nationwide protests across South Africa against the ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza (Israel has killed over 400 Palestinians including 100 children in the last 10 days) the ANC in Parliament has called for the Israeli ambassador in South Africa to leave with immediate effect. The ANC must implement this and the decision to recall the South African Ambassador from Tel Aviv with urgency. The African National Congress in Parliament is extremely outraged by the wanton and unjustifiable bombardment and killings of innocent civilians, including children, in Palestinian territory of Gaza by Israel military forces. We echo the widespread condemnation of these senseless attacks on defenceless Palestinians and call on the government of Israel to immediately cease with this blatant act of criminality. It is unacceptable that as the Israeli military is flagrantly violating the territorial integrity of Gaza, claiming hundreds of lives and injuring thousands, the United Nations Security Council fails to intervene decisively in line with its powers. The office of the UN Secretary General issues statements which have not effect. The UN Security Council must stand up and act to support vulnerable Palestinian people at the time when they need their protection. The situation involving Palestine and Israel is an undeclared war, in which the aggressor, Israel, has destroyed the Palestinian economy, robbed people of their land, unilaterally changed borders, and unilaterally built a wall of exclusion to keep Palestinians out of their land. When it feels provoked, it unleashes the most sophisticated military hardware on a defenceless people. Palestinians have been reduced to cheap labour for the Israel economy. This relentless destruction of the Palestinian territory and its people by Israel must be stopped. The international community needs to act in unison on this matter. As the ANC in Parliament, we stand unapologetically with the people of Palestine and pro-Palestinian campaigners in an endeavour to exert pressure on Israel’s government to comply with the UN Security Council resolutions and stop its killings and gross persecution of Palestinian people. We remain resolute in our view that the only long lasting peaceful solution to the situation in the Middle East is the attainment of a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine in which the two states exist side by side independently and peacefully. Our strong condemnation of Israel's violent aggression, however, does not in any way mean approval of the continuing firing of rockets by Hamas into Israel, which has put the lives of innocent civilians at risk. We echo the call by the South African government for both parties to end all forms of aggression towards one another. The ANC in Parliament will mobilise other political formations in this institution to take a principled stand against the criminal acts of Israel and further to ensure that Parliament as an institution formally condemns the deadly violence visited upon the people of Palestine. We will also invite other parties to the lunchtime picketing outside Parliament in support of the people of Palestine and in calling for peace in the Middle East region. As one of the measures to put pressure on Israel, we are of a firm view that our government must recall our ambassador to Israel and also ask the Israel ambassador to South African to leave with immediate effect. During this International Nelson Mandela Day in which South Africans and the world are called upon to engage in noble acts in emulation of the world icon, we align ourselves with his profound statement that “our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians”. http://www.alternativenews.org/english/index.php/politics/politico/8322-document-anc-calls-israeli-ambassador-to-leave-the-country |
Delafruita: whats this one saying?whats the long epistle to prove?that palestinians didnt align with isrealis?of course they didnt.isrealis MIGRATED from all over the world to RECLAIM their so-called god-given land and decided to reclaim it by force from those who didnt only exist side by side with them 2000years ago,but those who have remained there for milleniaeven the so called land God promised to them wasnt given to them alone. go to the book of genesis and read. the land was promised to Abraham and his "seed". Ishmael is mentioned no less than 14 times as the "seed" of Abraham. that is notwithstanding the fact that palestinians descended from both Isaac and Ishmael and a handful of other races, nations and ethnicity that have all lived and ruled on the land of palestine. i still wonder how only one group out of the 12 tribes of israeli (Jews-descended from Jacob's son, Judah) wants to claim the entirely cake only for themselves. if it isnt racism and apartheid, what is? |

Israel finds Hamas are no longer amateur fighters By Ben Wedeman, CNN July 22, 2014 -- Updated 0917 GMT (1717 HKT) "...What is significant now is that Hamas fighters appear to be better trained, with a new set of skills that I don't think Israel anticipated. One Israeli soldier who came out of Shaja'ia was quoted in an Israeli publication that Hamas is fighting like Hezbollah, which waged a successful guerrilla war against Israel's occupation in the 1980s and 1990s, and inflicted high casualties on Israeli forces during the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel in Lebanon...." experimentist: Only 25?even if it is only 1, the difference is on the israeli side it is soldiers (combatants) who are being killed while on the palestinian side it is innocent civilians who are being massacred by israel's army. they will target neighborhoods from the air, knowing fully well that civilians will perish, and then blame it on hamas for firing rockets. they possibly just want the palestinians to fold their arms and watch their lives and property and land ripped apart and do nothing, or may be, they want the palestinians to abandon their land and move- so they can build their illegal settlements on palestinian land. when it comes to confronting the palestinians on the ground, the israeli army flops big time. saturday night was one of the deadliest in gaza after 15 israeli soldiers were killed. israel took vengeance on the poor civilians of gaza. |
Nine IDF soldiers killed, death toll rises to 27 The Israel Air Force killed 35 members of two Gaza families in separate strikes Monday, raising number of Palestinian fatalities to 508. By Gili Cohen , Amira Hass, Amos Harel and Jack Khoury | Jul. 22, 2014 | 3:43 AM Nine IDF soldiers were killed Monday, the 14th day of Operation Protective Edge, including four killed by terrorists who infiltrated Israel from Gaza through a tunnel that emerged near Kibbutz Nir-Am. The casualties brought the Israel Defense Forces death toll to 27 since the ground operation began last week. The Israel Air Force killed 35 members of two Gaza families in separate strikes, near Khan Yunis on Sunday night and in Rafah Monday morning, according to witnesses. Also killed in the earlier air strike was Ahmed Sahmoud, 34, a known member of Hamas’ military wing, and the presumed target of that attack. The four IDF soldiers killed near Nir-Am were: Lt. Col. Dolev Keidar, 38, of Modi’in; Sgt. Nadav Goldmacher, 23, of Be’er Sheva; Warrant Officer Baynesain Kasahun, 39, of Netivot; and 1st Lt. Yuval Heiman, 21, of Efrat. With the death toll on both sides mounting, UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in the region to try to help bring about a cease-fire. The two met in Cairo on Monday. Netanyahu vowed Monday that the operation will expand until its goals are achieved. “The IDF is advancing on the ground according to plans, and the operation will continue to expand until its goal is achieved – restoring the calm to Israeli citizens for a long time,” he said after a meeting with Ya’alon, Chief of Staff Benny Gantz and the commander of the IDF Southern Command, Maj. Gen. Sami Turgeman. The incident in which the four IDF soldiers were killed near Nir-Am occurred at about 6:30 Monday morning, when at least 10 Palestinians entered Israeli territory from the tunnel and split into two groups, one tried to make its way to Kibbutz Erez and the other to Kibbutz Nir-Am. The terrorists were wearing IDF uniforms, which confused the commanders in the field and led them to seek positive identification. Photos from airborne drones showed the “soldiers” were carrying Kalashnikov rifles, which are not used by the IDF, at which point the field commanders realized they were terrorists and opened fire. One of the cells, however, managed to fire an anti-tank missile at the military jeep carrying Keidar and his men, killing them on the spot. During the firefight several of the terrorists tried to backtrack and make their way back to the Strip through the tunnel before the air force blew up the tunnel’s exit. Nine bodies were later found, and the IDF believes that the rest of the terrorists succeeded in returning to Gaza. The IDF believes the infiltrators were members of a Hamas force that was specially trained for this mission. In a video that documented the incident distributed by the IDF Spokesman one can see the terrorists were wearing regulation army boots, camouflaged helmets, and even had rubber bands tightening their trouser legs, making them look just like IDF soldiers. Three Golani Brigade soldiers were killed in two different incidents early Monday morning in Gaza City’s Sujaiyeh neighborhood. In the first incident, Staff Sergeant Jordan Ben Simon, 22, of Ashkelon, was killed, apparently by misdirected IDF fire. In the second incident, Staff Sgt. Tal Ifrach, 21, of Rishon Letzion, and Staff Sgt. Yuval Dagan, 22, of Kfar Sava, were killed in a firefight. According to the IDF, since the ground operation began last week, 14 whole tunnels were exposed, and another 45 tunnel shafts were discovered, some of them in private homes and mosques. Hamas, the army said, has over the past decade considerably upgraded its tunneling capabilities; whereas in the past the tunnels were relatively short and 10 meters underground, the average tunnel depth today is 25 meters. Hundreds of thousands of man hours have been invested in tunnel construction, the army said. Earlier Monday, the IDF released the names of six of the 13 soldiers who had been killed overnight Saturday and Sunday morning. They are: Master Sgt. Moshe Malko, 20, of Jerusalem; Maj. Tsafrir Bar-Or, 32, of Holon; Capt. Zvika Kaplan, 28, of Kibbutz Meirav; Sgt. Oz Mendelovich,21, of Atzmon, Sergeant Nissim Sean Carmeli, 21, a lone soldier from Texas who lived in Ra’anana; and Sgt. Gilad Yaakobi, 21, of Kiryat Ono. The Gaza fatalities on Monday included 25 members of the Abu Jama’e family, who lived east of Khan Yunis, and 10 members of the Siyyam family in Rafah. The home of the Abu Jama’e clan is a complex of eight apartments that houses the extended family. Fighter jets blew up the home on Sunday night while the family was eating its Iftar meal to break the Ramadan fast. Palestinian rescue workers labored throughout the night to rescue the wounded and retrieve the bodies. From preliminary investigations by B’tselem and the Palestinian Center for Human rights, the attack was apparently not preceded by any warning, not even a “knock on the roof” missile. In addition to Sahmoud, the dead included a woman of 60, one of her sons, four of her daughters-in-law and 19 grandchildren aged four months to 14 years. Two of the women were pregnant. In Rafah, the Siyyam home was bombed Monday, after morning prayers and the start of the fast. The strike also wounded 25 people. According to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, the IDF fired four warning missiles in the general vicinity of the Siyyam home; one landed in their garden, one hit a neighboring family, the Zuarovs, and the third and fourth hit the house of Ahmed Abu Sanima and wounded him. None of the three families knew which of the families the missiles were meant to warn. The Siyyam family, however, began to evacuate its home on the assumption the warning was meant for them. The moment they left the house, a fifth missile landed right on them. Two men, their wives, and six children aged 9 months to 15 years were killed. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the number of Palestinian fatalities during Protective Edge is 508, among them 69 women and 130 children. http://www.haaretz.com/news/diplomacy-defense/1.606531/1.606531 |

The Israeli Army Is Suffering Some Of Its Most Severe Losses In Years Armin Rosen Jul. 21, 2014, 6:26 PM So far, 25 Israeli soldiers have been killed during the first four days of ground operations in Gaza. This equals over one-fifth as many as the 121 Israeli soldiers killed during the 2006 Lebanon War, widely remembered as one of the worst debacles in the history of the Israeli military. It's more than the 22 Israeli soldiers killed during the 2002 battle in the Jenin refugee camp. Jonathan shocked by reports of Nigerian worker losing baby afta being beaten up by Lebanese employer orders." so according to the above tweet by Abati, the worker was beaten by the "orders of her Lebanese employer",and not by the boss himself. please moderators should stop being xenophobic and stop misleading people on nairaland to stir up controversial topics that are baseless. the question now is: who beat her up? were they her fellow Nigerian workers? and did the Lebanese boss really give orders to beat her up? what did she do?-even though i do not personally condone physical abuse as punishment. also what is the matter with this administration and Lebanese? the owner of Amigo, another Lebanese, was detained for 7 months, his businesses shut, and reputation tarnished only to later be vindicated of the charges by the court. what is going on? also do nairalanders read before commenting? |

Nixing Mandela funeral as too costly, Bibi shows world what he's truly made of Israel's prime minister proves he is not the smug, petty, vindictive, waffling, in-your-face insulting man he seems. He's something worse. [img]http://www.haaretz.com/polopoly_fs/1.469927.1368339930!/image/1693250460.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_640/1693250460.jpg[/img] Prime Minister Netanyahu and his wife Sara in a plane bound for London, May 3, 2011. Photo by GPO By Bradley Burston Published 14:39 09.12.13 In his eleventh-hour decision against attending the funeral of Nelson Mandela, Benjamin Netanyahu proved that he is not the smug, petty, vindictive, waffling, in-your-face insulting man he seems. He's something worse. The problem is not so much that the prime minister had first informed the South African government that he would, in fact, attend the ceremony, alongside Presidents Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, French President Francois Hollande, and scores of other world dignitaries, among them Iranian President Hassan Rohani, in what is expected to be a world gathering unprecedented in scope. Nor is the basic problem the fact that the decision was made so abruptly and with such lack of consultation, that the office of President Shimon Peres was thrown for a loop, and it was unclear if arrangements could be made to have Peres represent Israel in Netanyahu's stead. The problem is the reason Netanyahu chose to give: Money. The trip would cost too much. The problem, then, is the message Netanyahu has chosen to send: My Israel, which so craves and demands legitimacy and recognition as a full partner in the community of nations, does not consider a man like Nelson Mandela, or a nation like South Africa, or the sentiment of an entire world, worth the price of a plane flight. In sending this message, Benjamin Netanyahu has treated the passing of Nelson Mandela as he does every challenge in statecraft: He has addressed one problem by creating another. His message is clear: My Israel, which spends untold tens of millions on such matters as bolstering and protecting settlement construction during peace negotiations with the Palestinians, or erecting detention facilities for African asylum seekers rather than formulating coherent and just refugee policies, has nothing left over for this man Mandela. But that's only the beginning. With a wink and a nod to the settler right, the academic rabid right, and the KKK-esque far right, Netanyahu is sending an even stronger message: This is where I stand on this Palestinian-lover, Mandela. And this is where I stand on his Palestinian-lover heirs. At home, the decision has been interpreted as Netanyahu's response to recent reports of profligate household spending. Bottom line, Netanyahu seems to be suggesting: I have learned my lesson from having lavish bedrooms installed in airliners for relatively short trips, and for overspending taxpayers' money on flowers and candles and pool water for my three homes. I will economize. No more empty frills. Like the Mandela funeral. Worst of all, perhaps, and certainly setting a new standard in irony, Netanyahu's skipping the Mandela commemorations will allow him to oversee an extraordinary exercise in ramming through a Knesset bill to allow authorities to jail African asylum seekers for up to a year without trial, and to keep them from finding gainful employment in Israel. Just last month, the cabinet approved a budget allocation of 440 million shekels ($126 million) to fund the provisions of the as-yet-unpassed and High Court-vulnerable bill – more than 60 times what it would have cost for Netanyahu to attend the funeral. Never has Netanyahu sent a message quite this infuriating, with so much apparent success. He is betting, apparently, that the moderate majority has expectations so low, its resources of outrage so overtaxed and depleted, its capacity for response so beaten flat, that it will do little more than shrug and trudge on. And this bet may well be the smart money. What we are stuck with, in the end, is the message that Netanyahu is sending to the world. The world that Netanyahu's Israel is determined not to be a part of. "The whole world is coming to South Africa," foreign ministry spokesman Clayson Monyela said at the weekend. The world, yes. Israel, maybe not. http://www.haaretz.com/mobile/.premium-1.562552?v=12AF99EAF04CD4FBDE3AF193EBF1FE32 |
