The Ebla tablets, one of the most important archaeogical discoveries of modern times, contain details which confirm a number of the details of Biblical people. Names such as Canaan, Abraham, Saul, Israel, and David have been recognized in the tablets, which date to around 2300 BC. They also contain the oldest reference to Jerusalem, dated to before the time of Abraham (the reference is to Salem, a name from which Jerusalem is derived).

Other details mentioned include Sodom and Gomorrah and a number of other cities of the plains. Even more interesting is that they are noted in the same order as in the Biblical account found in Genesis 14:2 being: Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, Zeboiim, and Zoar. Repeatedly critics have ridiculed the idea of the existence of Sodom and Gomorrah and these tablets reveal that they existed even before the time of Abraham.

Another interesting find is the detail of the tribute that was paid by the king of Mari to Ebla after a defeat in battle. Among the payment was 11,000 pounds of silver and 880 pounds of gold. What makes this interesting is how it relates to the tribute money paid to Solomon during his reign. The amount of 10 tons of gold coming to Solomon has been scoffed at as ridiculous (see 1 Kings 10:14 and 2 Chronicles 9:13) when here we have tribute of over half a ton from just one city. This would seem to make the ten tons coming to Solomon as not at all unreasonable given the great difference in size.

Ur, from which Abram left with his father Terah is also mentioned in the Ebla tablets as is Haran.

An important aspect of such a substantial collection is the demonstration of the use of writing in everyday life, around 900 years before Moses. This adds to the evidence from other discoveries, that writing existed in this period of history. This is contrary to one of the major pillars of the 19th century documentary hypothesis of Julius Wellhausen and others, that Moses could not have written the pentateuch because writing, if it existed at all, was not in widespread use.

The Ebla discoveries also included a creation tablet with details similar to the creation account found in Genesis 1. This having been written around 900 years before Moses.

striktlymi: Trust me when I tell you that there is a whole lot to gain when one discovers God.
I have been a christian, i am not convinced of that

striktlymi: The above is rather funny! I believe what you have a problem with is worshiping a God that has been shoved down your throat...when one discovers God for himself you would be the one to cry out that you cannot worship him enough.
Now this is what is funny!!! Mind you, if by any chance i make heaven, i might have to ask God to terminate me off existence because i cant be a worship-slave for all eternity. Worshiping God day and night for billions and billions of years is no way to spend everlasting life!!

striktlymi: Doing your best means doing everything humanly possible...the question would be, if you have done everything you can do as human, what other thing can you do? Definitely nothing! So what's the 'P' if you now leave what you as a human being can't change to a God that you know?? I see nothing wrong here! Mind you, when one does nothing or little then the individual is either a bum or lazy and both are not in line with God's tenets.
I do not believe that there can be anything called "humanly impossible". Even in the bible, remember that God first created everything before he created man and told man to have FULL dominion. That means that there is nothing, on earth, natural, that should be impossible for man.

Leaving the bible, some 200 years past, DNA, the secret of life was thought humanly possible, until a naturalist put forward a theory, that eradicated God off some people's mind and got them working.

If God continues to influence our thoughts, man will know no civilization as most things would be thought "humanly impossible".

striktlymi: Can Einstein at his best fail an arithmetic test for primary school students?? Everyone would definitely say a resounding NO!!! But he can decide to willingly go there and fail it deliberately. The fact that he decided to fail does not mean that he can't pass the test. In same way, the fact that God is perfect does not in any way imply that he cannot decide to make his creatures to have limitations.
Do not forget that this imperfection hurts all life form, including man to whom God claimed the greatest love. It still doesn't make sense. I reject your analogy!!

Christianity Etc › Re: Davidylan, Striktlymi, Ihenobi, Chukkynwob: I Renouce Atheism. by ooman(op): 8:49pm On Mar 20, 2013
striktlymi: Yes, I know and the similarities are striking...anyways since you have decided to hold both views (one for the sake of argument while the other as your personal belief) then I will try and remember.
cool!!!

striktlymi: There is absolutely nothing wrong if you are the one to bring it all 'together' safe for one small problem...if it is in favour of proving the existence of God, it won't be your call but God's...don't worry I know he exists and don't ask me how I know tongue
What!!! Anyways, i have no personal gain if it is later proven that there is no God, and no personal gain if God gets proven. But two things remains a problem - 1. I hate the idea of spending my own precious little time in worship of a God. 2. I hate how the idea of God makes one reliant on him and stops one from being hard working enough - The saying "Do your best and leave the rest" comes from the God concept.

striktlymi: The bold I believe is primarily because you are looking at it in just one perspective...if you look at a problem long enough, you will definitely crack it, all it takes is to figure out what you are missing...there is time, all it takes is to look and maintain an unbiased mindset.
Actually, its about everything in nature. A perfect God cannot create an imperfect world. A peaceful God cannot create a chaotic world. They just dont agree. What happened? Did God get his maths wrong?
Christianity Etc › Genesis: A Great Work Of Plagiarism by ooman(op): 8:43pm On Mar 20, 2013
After ancient Ebla documents were found. It unbelievably contained all characters and creation account as recorded in the bible. Even more surprisingly, these documents were older than the Jewish Genesis, and so it was concluded that Genesis was copied by the ancient Jews from the Eblas. This view has not gone undisputed. However, dating of the Ebla document confirms that it is much older than the Bible, the question then is, Did God appear to man twice? How come an even more ancient document contained just what a newer version contained with modification? It became apparent that the Old Testament is a great work of plagiarism of the Ebla mysticism with modification and Quran, a great plagiarism of the Old Testament with modification

The ancient kingdom of Ebla boasted a population of 260,000 at the height of its power circa 2300 B.C. The grandson of Sargon the Great, Naram-Sin, destroyed Ebla in 2250 B.C. University of Rome professors Dr. Giavanni Pettinato, an epigrapher, and Dr. Paolo Matthiae, an archaeologist, discovered almost 17,000 tablets in 1975 and 1976 at Tell Mardikh, the ancient Ebla. These tablets are a scholar's treasure trove.

The Ebla tablets are court records and copies of records taken from the royal archives. Dating from around 2300 B.C. to the city's destruction circa 2250 B.C., the tablets name names and places and false deities that are named in the book of Genesis. For example, Adam, Eve, Noah, and the false god Baal are mentioned and so is Abraham's city of Ur. One single text provides 260 geographic names. Others list animals, fish, birds, possessions, and the names of officials.

Most of the tablets are economic records concerning tariffs, receipts, and other commercial and legal matters. Treaties and trade records made with the Hittites were also found. These treaties and agreements are similar in form to treaties recorded in the Old Testament book of Exodus, but they record transactions that occurred long before Abraham bought the Cave of Machpelah from the Hittites of his day. Others are literary texts that include mythology, incantations, rituals, and hymns to false gods. A creation account found among the texts mirrors the Genesis creation narrative.

Genesis should not therefore be taken seriously. The Quran also is absolutely ludicrous!!

I apologize to Christians but this is the truth.

striktlymi: C'mon ooman you really need to come to terms with the fact that everyone has a right to his/her own opinion irrespective of our beliefs, unbeliefs or a refusal to believe. If a 'fellow' Atheist's perspective is different from yours then it should be a good thing if and only if (iff) the individual is objective and logical in his/her approach.

Sometimes what we need to crack open a case is just a fresh pair of eyes...what we need do is try to understand where the next man is coming from; you can say: 'using the binoculars' of the other person in order to see what they see and be on same page with them...

Seeing what the next person sees does not mean that you must accept what they see but it would afford you the opportunity of presenting your argument in a much better light and in a more understandable way to the individual.
OK
Christianity Etc › Re: Davidylan, Striktlymi, Ihenobi, Chukkynwob: I Renouce Atheism. by ooman(op): 8:13pm On Mar 20, 2013
striktlymi: Hmmm...I guess you mean in the narrow sense of Atheism i.e 'positive Atheism'. Don't tell me you claim to be an Atheist because it makes you look cool in a debate wink. Anyways, there is a very thin line between non-theism and 'Atheism'.
Actually, non-theism in its entirety is the view that there is no God while NOT doing away with the possibility that there might be one we have not known. It separates itself from atheism with that fact because atheism, regrettably, is the belief that there is no God, in other words, Gods cannot exist.

see this from urban dictonary: A nontheist sees the God question as insoluble and irrelevant. Nontheists approach the God question from an empirical position, which has so far shown them that it has been impossible to either prove, or disprove the existence of God. A Nontheist considers the god hypothesis as dealing with matters that are unfalsifiable, therefore placing the question outside the realm of human knowledge

striktlymi: Now the scientist is talking...this has been my ish with you! You attempt to draw a conclusion when all the evidence is yet to be reviewed...what we have as far as science is concerned with respect to the ish of Deities is incomplete records.
What could possibly be wrong if i be the one to lay the idea of God to rest?

striktlymi: Goodluck with the bold cause you are gonna need it...
Thanks

striktlymi: I was kinda hoping that you would have seen enough evidence to move towards Deism at least...anyways there is still time to review the evidence a bit more closely.
Deism means a belief in a creator, or at least an Intelligent Designer, but when i look into nature, both organismal and cellular level, sorry but what i see is superficial design, the only thing certain is reactions obeying laws of possibility along a constant gradient of change.

Christianity Etc › Re: Davidylan, Striktlymi, Ihenobi, Chukkynwob: I Renouce Atheism. by ooman(op): 7:30pm On Mar 20, 2013
striktlymi: ooman now I am worried...why be a non-theist when you hold the view that God is non-existent?
I just told you. Atheism makes a clear cut in a debate.

In a more scientific sense, a possibility remains open until we can observe otherwise. That is, an hypothesis remains credible until it can be proven wrong. This is what I do when I try to be an atheist, I try to prove the God hypothesis wrong, so that it can become scientifically incredible.

But until then, nontheism is what I claim when not debating, like now.
Christianity Etc › Re: Davidylan, Striktlymi, Ihenobi, Chukkynwob: I Renouce Atheism. by ooman(op): 7:12pm On Mar 20, 2013
striktlymi: Okay, cool! Since there is no more ish. Now what's the OP about??...ooman, Atheism, non-theism...what's up??
The 2nd law. That and nontheism. Naturally, if you ask me my take on theism, I would tell you am a nontheist. But I love to take an atheistic position in debates because it makes a clear boundary.

Nontheism is so beautifully neutral, its so much more than I quoted on wikipedia. Look it up.

Nontheism does not take a strong position that there is no God, instead, it gives freedom of beliefs without grudges.

More?

striktlymi: I knew the bold is the barrier...try and look beyond that and you would see areas where both of your arguments intersect. I am of the opinion that the hallmark of one who is gifted in the art of articulating his/her thoughts in an argument is not really in how cogent his/her argument is but rather on the ability of the individual to be open to the facts inherent in the argument of the 'opposition'.

ifeness: Few years ago scientist claimed there were only 7 planets while the bible claimed only the earth exists....

Science keeps expanding. At the moment scientist only have 5% knowledge of the universe itself. This is because we are still a type 0 civilization. We still feed on dead plants and animals.

We know it is possible for humans to live without food...therefore feed on energy.

Talking about the different types of civilizations;

A Type I civilization would be able to manipulate truly planetary energies. They might, for example, control or modify their weather. They would have the power to manipulate planetary phenomena, such as hurricanes, which can release the energy of hundreds of hydrogen bombs. Perhaps volcanoes or even earthquakes may be altered by such a civilization.

A Type II civilization may resemble the Federation of Planets seen on the TV program Star Trek (which is capable of igniting stars and has colonized a tiny fraction of the near-by stars in the galaxy). A Type II civilization might be able to manipulate the power of solar flares.

A Type III civilization may resemble the Borg, or perhaps the Empire found in the Star Wars saga. They have colonized the galaxy itself, extracting energy from hundreds of billions of stars.

By contrast, we are a Type 0 civilization, which extracts its energy from dead plants (oil and coal). Growing at the average rate of about 3% per year, however, one may calculate that our own civilization may attain Type I status in about 100-200 years, Type II status in a few thousand years, and Type III status in about 100,000 to a million years. These time scales are insignificant when compared with the universe itself.

Evolution does matter, we just dont know much yet.
I know you will misinterprete it, that is why I edited it. I meant it doesn't matter in discussion with striktlymi!
