OYINBOGOJU: Because our Oga at The Top don't care.....I lost a sister in 1999 from this maternal death crisis, and at this level, they must care, otherwise... |
Employers of labour in the country risk one-year imprisonment and loss of 30 per cent of benefits due to employees if they delay or fail to pay their salaries. The penalty is contained in a new bill before the House of Representatives, Workman (Unpaid Wages Prohibition) Bill. The bill, which has already passed second reading, shall apply to employers in both public and private sectors when it comes into effect. The details of the bill, which our correspondent obtained exclusively on Sunday, showed that employers would lose between 10 and 30 per cent of the wage value for delaying or failing to pay employees’ salaries. Section 4 (1) of the bill provides, “An employer shall not hold onto the salary, wage, pension and any other benefit and emolument of any workman for a period of seven days and above from the day the payment of such salary, wage, pension and any other benefit and emolument falls due save in the event of any force majure.” Minority Leader of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, sponsored the bill. According to the bill, a salary delay of one to seven days, shall attract a penalty of “10 per cent of one month wage”, while delay or non-payment of salary for eight to 30 days, shall cost the employer “20 per cent of one month wage”. Where the delay is 30 to 60 days, the penalty shall be 30 per cent of two months wage. Salary delay of 60 days and above shall attract a harsher penalty of “30 per cent of the wage for the duration and one-month imprisonment of the employer”. The bill provides that depending on the size of the organisation, the provision shall apply to the employer, whether as an individual, partners or the directors. Sub-sections 3-6, added, “Where the breach is in respect of other monetary benefits apart from monthly wage and monthly pension, the penalty shall be 30 per cent of such monetary benefits for the period. “(4) Without prejudice to the provisions of this Act, where the employer in breach of this section for more than 60 days is an individual, the schedule herein shall apply to such individual. “(5) Without prejudice to the provisions of this Act, where the employer in breach of this section for more than 60 days is a small company other than a limited or public company, the penalties in the schedule herein shall apply to each of the partners in the company. “(6) Without prejudice to the provisions of this Act, where the employer in breach of this section for more than 60 days is a limited or public company, the schedule herein shall apply to all the directors of the company.” (7) The schedule referred to in sub-section 2 above shall form an integral part of this Act. The bill defines employment as a contract between the employer and the employee, where the former agrees to employ the latter. The proposed legislation states, “Contract means contract of employment, and includes any contract of apprenticeship. “Contract of employment means any agreement, whether oral or written, express or implied whereby one person agrees to employ another as a worker temporarily or permanently and that other person agrees to serve the employer as a worker.” Source: www.punchng.com/Employers-risk-one-year-jail-term-over-unpaid-salaries The questions that results from the above are: a). Is this law enforceable, b). In a case where an MDA is the culprit, who would be jailed or fined, c). How would this law affect the ever worsening unemployment situation in the country, Thanks. |
dasparrow: Why do you think so many married men cheat with younger women who are in their teens and early and mid twenties? It is because the vjay of their wives have become slack like an elastic rubber band. And keep in mind, the more babies you breed, the more loose your vjay becomes. So that is that. Please poster, this ur argument no hold water at all, as some of the girls wey you refer to get vjays that are more slack like an elastic rubber band than that of the women that had given birth. That said, does anything really change in a woman's vjay after birth, as I'm yet to notice that. My wife have been so worried that she's no longer the same down there, since after giving birth last December, and I've been finding it so hard convincing her that nothing has changed there. |
greatgod2012: my sister, that should be settled on bed, except you want to keep the anger till the next day, which is not to be encouraged in marriage........but each to his/her own sha o, as for me, anger cant make me turn him down, atleast, i know he wont all me keep that anger, so it depends on you and your partner.Go and tell this to my wife, and see whether you come out of my house the way you went in. |
That's scandalous o, though statistics in this nation can't be trusted. But on a serious note, why would a woman die, while bringing another life into existence? |
Folks, I've observed with interest, this issue of eating, drinking and merry making at funerals. More interesting is the fact that this happens, despite the age of the deceased, or circumstances of death (accidents, illnesses, assassinations, etc.). I may not know if this is peculiar to my tribe, Igbo, or is the norm in every other tribe. Just today, i was at the burial of a man in his early 50's, and choice foods, drinks and music were on display. What came to my mind immediately was that the money spent on those things must have come ftom the poor widow, and the funds so wasted would have added more value to her and her children. That is why i'm now asking if we must eat and drink at burials, thanks. |
saintneo: Why is this nonsense on the front page?Because they've always been right after all. Because they've always been one step ahead of this lying govt. |
Do you bother to ask yourself why Diya was often referred to as Mr. Oladipo Diya as agains Lt. Gen Oladipo Diya. if we can answer this, then I think the issue of clemency and pardon will be resolved without much ado. As for sahara reporters, its obvious they trive in misinformation[/quote]Right bro, the same way they misinformed us about Patience' sickness? I wonder who actually misinforms us in this nation. |
maclatunji: Watching Doyin Okupe defending the pardon on NTA. Waiting for the excuse to be given tomorrow for this rubbish.I think it will be the turn of Abati to do the defence, as he's not said anything since then, probably gathering his (mis)facts. |
Finally, our fears have been confirmed, and what will come out of this, nothing as usual. That's us. |

Pls is this new licence still enforceable by this year August, before Police go open shop for person head? |
Congratulations fellow Catholics, we have a new Pope. |
There is nothing so deficient in this failed state now like hope. I say it again, get the opportunity to steal, and steal very well, if plea bargain does not free you, you may be pardoned one day. |
I came across this inscription on a lady's T-shirt this morning, " A man who does not lie to a woman cares nothing about her feelings". Therefore folks, can this words be true? |
kabaka1: Even if he provides d money, he should still be prosecuted in d court of law n if found guilty, he should spend some good time in prison n not just six months wey dem give Bola Ife rhymz: Democrat my brown a$$, even Fashola will resign if he finds himself in such a precarious condition. .lolSee as una dey talk, una don forget say plea bargain still dey we law books. |
Afam4eva: The most annoying thing is that Rangers always comes close to winning something every season but end up coming second, third or fourth. But they're still the most consistent club in the history of Nigerian football. The funny thing about this our club is that Just like Arsenal FC, they'll never win the league, and will never be relegated. I miss the Obiagu stand sha. |
What are those properties? Why are they been held in trust for her? I guess she acquired them from her salary as a Biology teacher. |
Ok o, so he's finally given a damn about visiting these 2 states? But why this trip, cheap political point i guess? |
andyanders: Enugu, is very notorious for robbery kidnapping and all forms of crime. Let the Police keep arresting any of them because they know themselves and cannot point out those responsible because almost every member of their families are into crime So what have you succeeded in saying? Hope you know it's not compulsory you must comment. |
And after everything, those students are dead, and nobody had accepted responsibility, nobody had been punished. What a way to go as a nation. |
Bidvest2020: What's really soo special or extraordinary here?this is how leaders on STATE VISITS are received in cote d'ivoire.so what the biggie?Pls did they equally shut down the airspace for him? |
It's been more than 48 hours after 4 students of Nasarawa State University Keffi (NSUK) were gunned down in a peaceful protest, and scores of others injured by 'Unknown' shooters, and yet the 2 Ministers' of Education in Nigeria have kept mute over the incidence. Even when both the Army and Police authorities have come out to deny involvement in the killings, the Minsters' who are the primary custodians of these students have not said anything. Does it mean they care less for the lives of Nigerian students, or that those students deserve to die the way they did, or that they are not even aware of the situation? |
chaircover: Fa Fa Fa Foul!!!!Happy B'day dear. |
Is anyone still in doubt on whether this building will eventually be erected? |
First it was MASSOB members, now it's kidnappers'. Whoever the victims turn out to be, everything about this act had Police signature all over it. |
I read this write up, and felt like sharing it with us: As a self-acclaimed social critic, I have had cause in the past to disagree with certain actions of President Goodluck Jonathan; I still don’t think he is well suited to be the leader of Nigeria. The man might be a good human being but it is apparent he is meekly grappling with the rigours and challenges of ruling Nigeria-he has thus exposed himself to many ridicules and yabis from different quarters. I am guilty of being a member of the yabis group. However, my recent discussion with a very special friend and mentor a few days ago brought me to a sudden realization that perhaps, we may have been mobilising against the wrong individual. According to this friend, for this extensively misruled country to have a semblance of sanity and accountability, we should invest more energy in monitoring the activities of our Local Council Chairmen and State Governors. These men and women are the ones closer to us and from experience, are the ones conspiring and acting out the scripts ruining our nation. I will explain with examples. President Jonathan might be guilty of all the ridicules directed at him; he is clueless, his government is corrupt, his missus might be having issues with communicating effectively in English, his media aides are fast losing touch with reality, PHCN under him is still celebrating darkness instead of regular power supply after billions of US dollars have been injected into its operations, he is consorting dangerously with known fraudsters, fuel-subsidy thieves and convicted felons, etc. well, we have been focusing more on the Centre rather than in our various States and Local Councils…the real place where the scam is fertilised! I will start my exposure from Anambra, my home State-a State richly endowed but shockingly mismanaged and misrepresented. Under the captainship of Mr Peter Obi, my home State continues to be afflicted by bouts of misery, misfortune and strife. Is President Jonathan responsible for the dare-devil machinations of armed robbers and evil kidnappers that continue to terrorise the good people of Anambra State? Did President Jonathan direct the Anambra State Police Commissioner to permanently block a public road in Amawbia for his own weird “security” amusement? Mr Peter Obi has been Governor of the State for about seven years now and it may well be said that his State remains the only one that does not have a functional pipe-borne water supply. How do we smuggle the President into this glaring misrule/injustice? What about contracts inflation and use of dodgy contractors to carry out jobs that ought to benefit the masses? Well, just like in most States of Nigeria, Anambra State government continue to use rubbish contractors who partner with dodgy government officials to over-invoice jobs and collect billions in payment for work not done. The government of Anambra paid billions to a contractor for Ugwu-Tank/Nise road in Amawbia even though the contractor never mobilised to site. What has this got to do with President Jonathan? Welcome to Lagos State-Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola calls the shots in this highly cosmopolitan State. Let it be on record that Lagos under this gentleman Governor is a monumental embodiment of media hype and a great work of spin by paid publicists. Well, in his first four years in office, Mr Fashola attempted to transform Lagos into a sane city, but swiftly went into “sleep mode” in his second term. Lagos remains one vast, stinking, rats-infested, lawless, disease-filled, polluted and frustrating city. Truth be told, Mr Fashola should be ashamed of his public transport; his BRT and LAGBUS, the two faces of his public transport scheme is a collection of rickety, smoky, dirty buses that are not fit to convey goats to the market! Meanwhile, Lagos government officials cruise around in air-conditioned sleek cars. The BRT and LAGBUS coaches are horrible and make the outlawed Molues look like London coaches! Because Lagosians have been traumatised into submission, nobody sees the insults being heaped on them by the government anymore. Lagos streets and neighbourhoods will horrify any sane human being-a collection of sprawling jungles, shanties, smelly gutters and totally washed out roads. I see it as one big scam-planting beautiful flower on the highways to entice and deceive visitors to the State, meanwhile, the shock and anguish lies in wait if you dare move into the streets. Is it the fault of President Jonathan that Local Government Councils in Lagos do nothing other than pay salaries and do God-knows-what with the rest of their huge monthly allocation? We really need to focus more on the activities of our State Governors and Local Council leaders-this is where the big fraud is incubated and nurtured to fruition. Since the advent of this democracy with a voracious financial appetite, past governors have been accused of stealing so much money from their various States and virtually all of them continue to spring forth silly reasons to avoid standing before a Judge to give accounts of their stewardship. These thieving Governors plundered the resources of their States while we, the malnourished and docile lot continue to slumber and point accusing fingers at imaginary enemies and evil spirits as being responsible for our plight. Imagine what difference it would have made if we had been vigilant during the inglorious reigns of Orji Uzor Kalu, Sani Yerima Ahmed, Saminu Turaki, Joseph Dariye, Bola Tinubu, DSP Alamieyeseigha (the Governor-General of Ijaw Land and President Jonathan’s acclaimed benefactor), Peter Odili (this man got a perpetual injuction restraining any court/police from asking him questions), Chimaroke Nnamani, the legendary James Ibori (bless the Brits for helping out), Lucky Igbenidion, Ayo Fayose, Rev. Jolly Nyame, Gbenga Daniels, Chinwoke Mbadinuju, Rashidi Ladoja, Gbenga Daniels, Timipre Silva, Ikedi Ohakim, etc. these men have one thing in common-they are accused of stealing BILLIONS of Naira from State coffers. These former Governors stole what belonged to the long-suffering people of their States-today, most of them are Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and we continue to offer prayers for their protections since “the Bible enjoins us to pray for our leaders”. What rubbish? This is the height of absurdity, the most dramatic case of paupers celebrating those that induced their hunger. The same people that stole our future are now in Abuja as our law-makers-churning our ludicrous laws that will continue to promote their stinking welfare while securing their loots. We really need to take this criticism, social media fight against corruption, “occupy Nigeria” mantra, “PDP must go”, and all other lawful fight against oppression down to our various States and Local Councils. We cannot change Nigeria from Abuja; real development must start from our immediate environment-in this instance, States and Local Council. Have you not wondered shockingly why all our Governors and their cronies embark on medical tourism (now that’s a new one) to foreign countries with their sacks loaded with our money? Same rubbish Governors that have a “Ministry of Health” and claim to spend billions annually on hospitals and all that jazz. Sullivan Chime just returned from London-I wonder what happened to all the hospitals in Enugu. The sooner we realize that our enemies are our Governors and Local Council administrators, the better for all of us. Though the centre holds so much power enormous resources, the decay, the rot, the scam, the sham government, the shoddy leadership, the mess finds its resting place at the hearts of our various States. All our Governors and LG Administrators spuriously dole billions of Naira to themselves annually and sinfully tag is as “security votes”. In all, this money is simply another channel through which our funds develop wings and fly into their foreign bank accounts and those of their mistresses/accomplice. The highest scandal associated with this evil “security votes” is that the Governors and LG chaps are not required to give an account of how the money is spent to anybody. Why are we not asking our various Governors why they have refused to conduct Local Council elections? Under Peter Obi of Anambra State, there has been no such election for about seven years now. The Governors benefit immensely from this arrangement by quietly appointing mostly charlatans and stooges as “Caretaker Committee” Chairmen who aid them siphon funds, call them “visionary Governors”, and similar esoteric titles. And we the mugus continue to celebrate them and pray against witches and wizards “delaying our destiny” and ask God to burn them! Insulting and making President Jonathan the object of caricature will not change the status-quo; as long as we remain aloof to the madness, ineptitude and bizarre treasury-looting by our Governors and Council Administrators, Nigeria will remain one huge joke. If we had been vigilant in the first instance, maybe President Jonathan would have ended his political adventure in Bayelsa State as a lacklustre Governor, maybe his acclaimed luck would have seen him in jail as a guest of Nuhu Ribadu’s EFCC (never mind that Ribadu shamelessly denied he investigated and found Jonathan corrupt when offered that juicy carrot). 2015 is fast catching up on us, let us make haste and redefine the basis of our criticism, let us clearly define our targets, let us do away with the concept of impotently attacking imaginary enemies while the real ones are our various Governors and LG Administrators. The organised civil society groups, the NLC/TUC, and sundry lovers of this country must help in stopping the antics of these thieving chaps-we must change that mind-frame that being a Governor gives you the right to loot your State silly, and use same loot to avoid jail. The time to start chasing out these goons and robbers from our midst is now-before they metamorphose and end up in Abuja as law-makers, Vice President or even President-“God forbid!” www.saharareporters.com (Give Jonathan A Break-Governors Are Stealing Us Silly, by Jon Chikadibie Okafo) |
Why do we still need to keep and pay those media advisers and other govt. officials, who will serially deny that their principals were sick, only for those principals to come out with the true status of their health later. On Tuesday, Sullivan told us he was actually sick, and now it was the turn of Patience Jonathan. |
It's because i'm married to my friend. She's the only woman i could live with and for. |
