some-girl:

I have a major problem with the accents.
Good actors should learn accents and should be convincing. Non Africans like to believe we all speak the same, sound alike and look alike. Makes life easy for them especially foreign directors of African movies.
These same people would get offended when their accents are faked incorrectly.
Mel Gibson's and Russell Crowe's attempts at Scottish and Nottinghamshire accents respectively were criticized, although theirs were errors that would go unnoticed by those who aren't familiar with the accents.
Thandie and Noni Rose didn't even make any attempt to sound Nigerian. They seemed to have decided that any accent they could manage that sounded remotely African would suffice.

Thank u for saying what i've been struggling to say all the while.

ITS A MOVIE!!!! what has heritage got to do with anything, common guys when are we going to stop nip-picking at everything Forest Whitaker and Kerry Washington sound nothing like an African let alone east african who have very thick African accent, they both got 5 stars! whats with the focus on Thandie atleast she is half African, what about Anika Noni Rose? all am saying the movie wants to sell a Nigerian story to the rest of world and the best we could do is complain and mummur! Common guys if I have £20m to invest into movies about a part of Nigerian History am sorry the key roles has to be played by top dogs of the movie screen. Atleast it takes courage to learn how to speak like an African< I would like to see any of our Nollywood artist mostly Ibo or Yoruba to speak with an Hause accent?

Yes it's another hollywood movie, but I think we should also hold "our" black actors/artists to the same critical optic that other established white actors are held up to. It's not about putting black/african actors down for the mere sake of it, but being critically objective about the finer nuanced points in acting/art that make for great viewing. Olanna(Thandie's character) fluency with her native tongue igbo and her flawless britico english helped shape her development in the book. Yes, thandie and her directors/producers can get away with not portraying this element in the movie cos she's acting for a largely western audience, who will watch with their pockets; but the critic in any average african movie goer is also hoping a hollywood actress with range gets this subtle point about african accents and nails it. No signs from the trailer so far...

Education / Re: The Latest On ASUU Strike by orgasticdance: 12:06am On Jul 24, 2013
chiwizzi: I tink d strike is goin to last a bit longer dan we all realise.am not in support of it but den readin abt d pathetic level of nigerian universities, its effects on its graduates dat pour out to the economy every yr,d 0% growth in nigeria n d readiness of ASUU to change al dis,i might say i agree wit ASUU but pls 4 God's sake i hope ASUU's joking wen dey say dey r ready to strike for 3-5 yrs in other 4 al nigerians universities to b renovated cos it jus will not work.dey ll b puttin d nation in serious jeopardy.i can alredy si undergraduates linin up on d streets n crime rates sky rocketin..God help us..
Let us pray nigerians!
shove ur prayers to the side, we've bn praying since the 80s and yet nothing has been done. it doesnt take a blind man to see that ASUU is emblematic of everything that is wrong with nigeria and at the end of the day the poor man who isn't the child of a corrupt politican who can shell out money for private university or to send his wards abroad would suffer for the corrups leadership that has held this country to ransome since independence.

^^OMG, if only 10% of nollywood movies were made like this!
i was originally skeptical about the casting and the director's pedigree but the trailer is really really great. Chiwetel nails it so far as odenigbo, thandie newton's accent..eish, may not be a problem for a western audience tho...

carefreewannabe: I don't like links 'cause I'm to lazy for them BUT what is wrong with people directing you to other sides? It's business. The more people click, the more companies, that advertise there, are willing to pay. It's just another economic sector with the potential to create employment. Why these resentments toward Blogs and people making money this way? (Some of them even don't but like publishing)Is only Nairaland allowed to make money?
if u had a thrivin hair salon, and other upstart salon owners come to attract customers from ur shop, witout compensation, wont u call foul play?

FrostyZonn: 1. NTA

2. NTA

3. NTA

That Television Channel is an embarrassment to Nigeria as a nation.
No sir. An embarrasment of a country isn't worthy of being embarrassed by one if its own; NTA is a mirror that reflects the mediocrity that Nigeria is.
