Politics / Re: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala And Her 4 Children Are Harvard Graduates by orgasticdance: 7:33pm On Jul 17, 2013
tsmack: I truly fear for this nation!

Despite the amount of time some people spend on the internet, they still spew their ignorance (with pride) all over the place. And these are supposed to be the leaders of tomorrow?

You should at least do yourself the justice of googling up Harvard before embarrassing your family and country on the social media.

In case you don’t know, Harvard is not about money. It is about ability!

You need to prove BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT that you belong to the top strata of achievers - irrespective of your race and age - before you are accepted into the school. Besides, most people use STUDENT LOANS to fund their studies. It is almost automatic.

Harvard is NEVER about money!

Ngozi's children should be celebrated because gaining admission into such a school is an achievement on its own. Why do you think some Companies only employ graduates from Harvard?

Or have you ever heard of an Harvard graduate being “unwillingly” jobless? I don’t think it’s possible!

Invest in your life by spending time reading about value adding stuff. You don’t have to play the internet idiot; leave that to the others.

God bless Nigeria!
Yes it takes ability to make it into harvard. But this shouldn't be story worthy from a public servant. . You won't see anyone celebrating David Camerons children going to harvard because great britian has equally capable schools in oxford and cambridge. You won't see anyone celebrating the obama kids going to oxford or cambridge when you have the worlds best schools in the US, or as a US leader you are expected to evoke that sentiment. Ngozi Okonji Iweala, as with so many Nigerian leaders who pay lip service to change, are all hypocrites in my opinion.
Education / Re: Preparing for GRE by orgasticdance: 4:53pm On Jul 17, 2013
^^Yeah this would be the perfect time to sit for the exams, if u have a little time on ur hands 2wks to a month should be enough to prepare for the gre. I don't know of anyone in nigeria who has gained admission while still in school. u may need to wait till your final semester results are out before sending in your transcipts. My guess is u can start the application process by writing the gre exams and sending ur scores to ur prospective schools. U have a solid cgpa, also focus on closing out strong. what programs are u looking at for ur postgrad?
Education / Re: Preparing for GRE by orgasticdance: 1:27pm On Jul 17, 2013
Find Out!:

Do you have Grubers GRE? If not, send an empty message to selfstudy360@gmail.com. You'll get an instant reply containing GRE materials and Grubers is one of them. The Grubers is quite helpful for Verbal, especially the vocabulary aspect. Above all, keep studying examples and taking sample tests. I wish you all the best.

Cheers.
Thanks

kokoA: Personally I feel Chimamanda is over-hyped. She is a very good writer no doubt, but her books to me aren't anything out of the ordinary. The other dude went to far with his anger though..
if u can make that clear distinction btwn ordinary or great fiction why arent u writer of one urself? CNA didn't do anything wrong, she just echoed our frustrations with the caine --must we write for queen mother?; and she's entitled to her views anyway. Calling her out as Abubakar did only serves to burnish her reputation as a more established writer than he ever would be. If na me talk say my favorite fiction is in my computer (which is quite true) nobody go send sad

Damn I'd miss NBA, NCAA and the likes. I no longer consider football as a real sport cos of the NBA. Now that The Heat have decided to zone in on a third consecutive title now this. Online streaming is too expensive, ESPN must be back!
If ur in lagos try cobranet, they have a plan that allows u browse free between 12am and 6am, and they were quite reliable when i used them last year. I practically watched the entire 2011/2012 finals without any glitch from them. I'm no more in lagos and this development would suck big time when playoffs start.
TV/Movies / Re: ESPN To Close Its Channels In Africa July 31 by orgasticdance: 6:41pm On Jul 16, 2013
SimonAndal: Who cares? It's not like they broadcast sports appealing to the ordinary African (football). Bye bye!

NBA, Sportscentre, Pardon the interruption with Mike wilbon, Around the horn with Tony reali, PressPass with Tommy smith, those nonsensical yet enjoyable "this is sportscenter" commercials, are a few of the reasons I tune to ESPN and i'm an ordinary african and yes i also watch my football on supersport; and don't forget it was ESPN who used to bring us champions league football on tuesday and wednesday nights before the south african channel did their thing...

Fantastic comment from a fantastic nairalander. Mr. Soyinka has lost every respect I have for him. Instead of attacking issues like a literate mind, he took side and ended up spuwing things that calls his reputation into question.

OBJ went Senile and Wole has followed him.
No. He never had ur respect if he lost it simply becos of some silly mundane issue... Intellectuals are humans too. And are actually more interesting when they are wrong than right undecided

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: What Must I Do To Get A Job Immediately After Service. by orgasticdance: 12:25pm On Jul 15, 2013
GboyegaD:

Nice one. I think another challenge I have is that some people are lazy. I have spoken to a number of people I know who are done with service year and all I keep hearing is that they don't have the right connections. One even told me that all he is interested in was how I would fix him up and I was like do I own a company of my own?

However, in my opinion, the best way to go about it is believing that you would get a job and drop your resumes to as many firms as you can both physically and electronically.
Drop ur resumes were..lol? This economy isn't even churning nearly a fraction of the jobs its young hardworking graduates need. If every graduate in the market simply took ur advice only 5% would still be recruited. That's why people are leaving in droves to explore other options. The point u make about people being lazy is tru to a point, but it's not always true. Ok lets say i have a first class degree in statistics and the only places for me to get a job is secondary schools. im entitled to being discouraged and even venting my frustration, does that make me lazy, i dont think so; if im smart i'd do great eventually, but in a society were things work i'll be spoilt with options right out of college...

readin this in 2013, are there any experienced engineers in the house willing to throw in more helpful info on what an upcoming engineer can do to improve himself. Iv a mech engr degree. bn out of school a few years, didnt do anything engineeering, worked in finance and went down the liberal arts route; but with the job market in tatters im tinking of retooling my self and becoming an engineer once again. i hate the physical aspects(machines, design, rigs etc) of engineerin but im adept at the soft aspects( programming, software, quant etc) . im thinking of enrolling for an msc in reservoir engr but id like to hear folks who are in other areas of engineering such as industrial and biomedical..thanks in advance

StateOfMind:

You guys can pass across your point without the assumption that people criticising beverly do worse in real life. If you do so, put it down in writing, but don't go saying people who have been criticising her do worse. We all are not perfect, agreed, but each individual has limits. There is nothing real in what she did last night, it was simply lack of self-control. Is she the first female to grace the show? This is not even about some other county mocking us, its about the disgrace she could have brought upon herself knowing the kind of society she comes from. If as a fan, she could put me through that, I can imagine her parents\siblings\friends watching that. Let's call a spade a spade, what she did yesterday was bad. She could have had unprotected sexx with that dude last night, someone you can't confirm his health status. The reason I want her home is for her own good, not particularly for the country's image. I want her home before it gets worse cos I really do still like her.

@spade, please could you tone down the insultive words you use on beverly? I know you have never liked her but those words hurt me as an ex-fan, biko.
Honestly if we really cared about the extremes to which people go to at parties we'd all be dead by now. so leave matter. ok ur a woman, i get the whole african society rap. But the problem isn't beverly per say, the problem is a society that is so full of hypocricy and self righteousness and would condemn anyone ( women, moreso than men) for the slightest shift from what is considered morally acceptable. Common! Beverly was well within her rights to do what she did yesterday. She and Ang had some good old fun b4 bassey ruined it cheesy grin If she were my sister i'd still stand by what i'm saying. She's an adult for chrissakes, she did not violate any moral code of hers (at least so far she hasn't had any remorse over what happened last night), so why do u think u must foist urs on her?

In fact the Beverley case is really giving me concern. Yes, we have all made mistakes. Some small, some big. But getting fingered on national TV? Come on!

She simply does not know what to say per time. She is just running around like the world is her oyster and she rules it. At 21, she has experienced stuff that some people don't even sniff in a lifetime.

BS. do urself a favor and watch TBN, all day all week; Beverly rocks no matter wat u or i say, she's put herself up on national tv for our viewing pleasure, yet u now want to ridicule everytin she's done just because she chose to have some fun as any normal adult is allowed to.. angry
