In a few days’ time, Nigerians will be headed to the polls to determine who will pilot the affairs of the country for the next four years.

Candidates vying for the post of President at the 2015 Nigeria election, along with their political parties have presented all sorts of manifestos during their campaigns but not much are said about Education. All we get are promises of “free education at all levels” and magical transformation of the education sector with no detailed realistic blueprint. It’s very sad given the present poor state of education in Nigeria.

Nigeria is among the few countries yet to adopt the UNESCO recommendation of devoting at least 20% of the budget to funding education. Truth be told, a lot has actually been spent on Education in Nigeria, but the question is, was it really invested on the students/school children and their teachers? The answer is the reason why no Nigerian university is ranked among best 100 globally. Our colleges of education has deteriorated to the level they have become only the last option for admission seekers who were unable to make the minimum requirements for admission into universities. Let’s not forget the colleges of education are supposed to produce future basic education teachers.

UNESCO recently rated Nigeria as the country with highest number of out-of-school children, no thanks to the increasing problem of insecurity in the North-Eastern part of the country, and a plethora of other problems. There is TROUBLE with Nigeria’s Education and everyone should be concerned!

Why should the youths/Nigerian students be bothered? It is simple, our so called leaders send their wards abroad to receive the best of education from world-class universities while you and I are left to bear the brunt of the bad educational system here which ultimately leads to unemployment.

We must take a stand now. We can’t afford to continue to stand on the sideline, the stakes are high now. We must come out en masse and vote in the coming election.
We may not really have much of options in the candidates, but we must make a choice. This begins by making sure we all have our Permanent Voter’s Card.

Now, let’s do a little examination of the front-runners in the presidential race.

Goodluck Jonathan (PDP):
Under the tenure of our incumbent president, Nigerian students were forced to stay at home for over a year as a result of ASUU, ASUP and COEASU strikes.
On the positive side, his tenure saw the establishment of nine new federal universities and over 100 Almajiri schools in the northern part of the country.

Muhammadu Buhari (APC):
It was alleged that during his tenure as the military head of state, Buhari banned Student Unionism and even the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The former general has however promised to revamp the Nigerian education sector if given the opportunity to rule the country again.

Remi Sonaiya (KOWA):
The only female presidential candidate, Prof Remi Sonaiya has promised to rebuild Nigeria into a Nation that works.

With the 2015 JAMB UTME registration officially closed, Campus Portal Nigeria have compiled the list of most sought after universities.

Out of the over 180 universities in Nigeria, University of Ilorin (Unilorin) has the highest number of JAMB UTME applicants with over 85,945 candidates seeking admission into the institution. This is followed by the University of Benin (Uniben) with over 60,020 applicants, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (Unizik) with over 58,410 UTME applicants.

The 4th, 5th, and 6th most sought-after higher institutions are the University of Nigeria, Nsukka – UNN (57,539 applicants), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria – ABU (52,785 applicants), and the University of Lagos – UNILAG (49,059 applicants) respectively.

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2014 November/December 2014 General Certificate Examinations (GCE) with an improvement in candidate's performance when compared with the previous examinations conducted by the body.

The Registrar and the Chief Executive Officer of the body, Prof. Promise Okpala, while announcing the results in Minna on Wednesday, noted that 52.94 per cent of the candidates got credit pass in English Language and 55.37 per cent recorded credit pass in Mathematics.

This showed an estimated 1 per cent increase in candidates performance compared to last year's results.

Okpala explained that 63,445 registered for the examinations, out of which, 61,386 sat for the papers with 30.57 per cent candidates recording five credits and above with 620 cases of malpractices recorded during the examination.

The Registrar added that candidates can now check their results online.

Remember the exam is strictly Computer Based...

The ongoing school fees crisis rocking the Postgraduate School of the University of Nsukka (UNN) in Enugu State may have reached a sour point as the university administration just suspended the institutions postgraduate programme indefinitely.

In a notice made available today from the office of the Public Relations Officer (PRO), the university ordered all postgraduate students to immediately vacate the school hostel and warned that not doing so will be met with unpleasant consequences.

The management of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced Wednesday, 4th March, 2015 as the date for the 2015 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Computer Based Test (CBT).
The JAMB PRO, Mr Fabian Benjamin, who made the announcement said that the examination will be written by about 1.4 million candidates nationwide.
Benjamin urged public spirited individuals and corporate organisations to invest in CBT by way of building and equipping more centres.
The JAMB spokesman added that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the National Examinations Council (NECO) and other examination bodies would soon be migrating to the computer-based examination mode soon.

Nigeria's Education sector needs a total overhaul.

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Prof C. C. Asiabaka has re-stated his commitment to restore and implement the original policy of withdrawal of students with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of less than 1.0 at the end of Year 1.
He noted that the renewed commitment was to bring back the spirit of hard work and competitiveness that initially characterised students trained in FUTO.
In his communication to the University Senate, Prof Asiabaka stated that the administration has put in place measures to ensure that only students that have the mental capacity to cope with the academic rigour of our great University are retained. He noted that most Heads of Department have failed to implement this policy to the letter.
He equally noted that students who have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of less than 1.0 are still allowed to continue registration of courses without caution by the Department. He added that the restoration of a credible admission process by Management has raised the academic standard and would eventually culminate to producing quality graduates in the near future.
He equally urged Deans and Heads of Department to put in place measures that would weed out the deficient students from the system once their deficiencies are detected.

The Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, has admitted about 10,922 students out of the 21,000 students that applied for admission during the 2014/2015 academic session.

The Rector of the institution, Mr Shuiabu Musa, made this known on Saturday during the matriculation ceremony of the fresh students in Bauchi.
Musa congratulated the new students and urged them to focus on their mission in the institution which is to learn.
He said that all academic programmes of the institution had been accredited while it had introduced new programmes in Statistics, Building, Nutrition and Dietary, Marketing and Public Administration.
The rector said that the institution had also established a School of Agriculture with Department of Forestry Technology and Animal Health and Production Technology.
In her contribution, the Registrar of the institution, Hajiya Rukaya Arabi, warned the students against indecent dressing, cultism, examination malpractices and other vices while on the campus.

The Kano State Government has approved the sum of N17 million for the purchase of forms for candidates who want to write the 2015 Joint Admission and Matriculation Board’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in the state.
The Commissioner for Justice, Mr Maliki Umar, who made this known after the state’s Executive Council Meeting on Friday, said that the amount will also carter for the training of the candidates for the examination too.
He reiterated the state government’s determination to develop infrastructure in the state as part of initiatives to improve the welfare of the people and assured that the education sector is at the fore-front of the current administration’s development agenda.

The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) will graduate about 7,000 students during the 4th convocation ceremony of the institution scheduled to hold on Saturday, 17th January, 2015 in Lagos.
This was contained in a statement signed by the institution’s Head of Media and Information, Dr Ronke Ogunmakin, which said that the convocation lecture on “Open and Distance Learning and Democratic Transformation in Nigeria’’ will be delivered by Prof. Rufai Alkali, the Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs.
According to the statement, the ceremony will be chaired by Prof. Godswill Obioma, the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC).
It said the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Vincent Tenebe, had in the last three years, consistently maintained and institutionalise every second week of January for its convocation ceremonies.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has suspended admissions into Medical laboratory science courses for the 2015/2016 academic session in order to enable the commission take stock of the programme.
The NUC Director of Academic Standards, Dr Gidado kumo, who made the announcement, said that the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) removed the course from its website for 2015/2016 session admission in compliance with an NUC directive.
According to him, the NUC has numerous unresolved problems with the Medical Laboratory Science and the Medical Laboratory Council.
He described as illegal the directive from the council for the establishment of Medical Laboratory Science faculties.

The National Universities Commission (NUC), has disclosed that the dearth of quality teaching staff in Nigerian universities is having a negative effect on accreditation performance.
Speaking at a public lecture organised to mark the first Founder’s Day celebration of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, the NUC Deputy Director, Ashafa Ladan, said that the Needs Assessment report on Nigerian universities shows that less than 50 per cent of lecturers have doctorate degrees.
Ladan warned that some private universities proprietors would “either have their operating licences suspended or undergo forensic auditing due to their failure to put in place proper structure for governance and administration as contained in their academic brief and the university law.”
The NUC director added that profit motive made some proprietors to violate procedures and requirements in an effort to begin lucrative and marketable courses before maturity period.

The long awaited West African Examination Council (WAEC) November/December GCE result is finally out. Over 70 percent of the candidates who sat for the examination, failed to make five credits with Mathematics and English Language inclusive.

The Head, National Office of the Council, Charles Eguridu, who announced the results on Thursday at a news conference in Lagos, said of the total 241,161 candidate who sat for the examinations in 2014, only 72,522 scored five credits with the two key subjects, giving a pass rate of 29.27 percent.

He noted that a total of 241,161 candidates representing 97.69 per cent had their results fully released, while 5,691 others, representing 2.31 per cent had a few of their subjects still being processed, due to some errors.

Mr. Eguridu said that the errors were mainly traceable to the candidates and cyber cafés in the course of registration or writing the examination and explained that the errors were already being corrected by the council, to enable the affected candidates get their results.

However, the examination body said it withheld results of 28,817 candidates.

The 2014 convocation ceremony of the University of Ibadan which took place on Monday, November 17, saw a total of 7,786 graduating students receive their first degree certificates.

In his address at the event, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Adewole, explained that the 2013 convocation ceremony could not hold due to the strike action by the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). He said that this year’s convocation was for the graduates of the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 academic sessions.

The VC, who gave a breakdown of the results, said that a total of 222 graduands bagged First Class degrees as another 1,885 got Second Class Honours (Upper Division). A further 4,147 graduating students made Second Class Honours (Lower Division) while 786 and 223 made Third Class Honours and Pass respectively.

The university awarded a total of 5, 959 graduands higher certificates from 13 Faculties and Centres. The figure comprised 46 M.Phil, 123 Masters in Public Health; 4, 467 Academic Master’s; 1, 313 Professional Master's and 153 Postgraduate Diplomas.

Also, 329 graduands from the College of Medicine and 237 graduands from the Faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy participated in the convocation with 614 Doctor of Philosophy graudates, which includes one Doctor of Medicine degrees, spread over 12 Faculties, two Institutes and one Centre.

In his welcome address, the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council, General Adeyinka Adebayo, CFR, (rtd) remarked that “UI is unarguably the largest producer of postgraduates in Nigeria”. He urged the graduands to be good ambassadors of the University and not indulge in any act that would tarnish the image of their alma-mater.

Report has it that the students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) are currently protesting the hike in their school fees by the management.

It was alleged that the school fees was increased by Ten thousand naira (10.000.00) said to be developmental fee.

At the time of this report, Security officers from the Plateau State Special Task Force (STF) are at the school premises to ensure that law and order prevails.

The convocation ceremony of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) which took place on Saturday, 22nd November, 2014 saw a total of 2,900 students receive their first degree and post-graduate degree certificates.

The break-down of the results which is for the 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 session graduating students showed that 14 bagged first class degrees while a total of 517 made second class upper division.

A further analysis of the results indicated that 857 students made second class lower division as 872 and 445 graduated with third class and pass degrees respectively.

In the postgraduate category, a total of 195 students got their Masters and Ph.D certificates.

Speaking at the convocation event, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Hilary Edeoga, congratulated the graduands and urged them to be good ambassadors of the institutions.

He commended the prevailing peace and cordial relationship existing between staff, management and students of the institution at the moment.
