How come my name is not on this list? This appears to be the names of movers and shakers of Nigeria. People that most Nigerians aspire to be like. I bet most of them already have one national award or another. This is a roll call of great Nigerians.

Business / Re: Can A Nigerian Become A Billionaire Without Patronizing Corruption Or Politics? by passyjango(m): 4:26pm On Feb 23, 2012
You can not be a billionaire working for another person, neither can you be a billionaire through self employment. The secret of billionaires is to get other people or their money working for them. You cannot be a billionaire through your own effort, you must leverage the effort of others. Check some of the richest people in the world, they are employing thousands of people.

The secret of of being a billionaire is create a process, perfect the process, invite other people and get them to work for you using the process you have created, lead them by example and win their respect and loyalty, reward then, and iterate. By the way having N1 billion does not make a billionaire, it is $1 billion (N160 billion).
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Help Needed, I Just Lost My Job Recently by passyjango(m): 6:30pm On Feb 18, 2012
What is Nigeria turning into? How can a human being who has put in 3 yrs of service be paid N800,000 as his bye-bye package? This is sick.

@Op, I am with those advising you to reappraise your priority. At this stage your priority should be to find your feet. You should also try to convince your loved ones especially your mother that you will get over this soon. Be confident and stop panicking another door will open soon. This might just turn out to be the best thing that has ever happened to you.

For those asking why we had the arabic inscription on the Naira note, maybe the next time you decide to argue, you would want to reember this;

Your problem is that you are living in the past. No one is doubting the contribution of Arabic to education and history. We are talking about its relevance today in our education system. Today as far as a education is concerned in Nigeria, Arabic is just a language that students learn in school.

English is the language for knowledge delivery in Nigeria and Boko Haram cannot change that. So, the only solution for northerners is to embrace English rather that sticking to the past. Arabic will never be a mainstream language in Nigeria. Soon it will only be used in mosques more like Latin is used in catholic churches.

aribisala0:

Northerners were literate and still are in Arabic long before their southern counterparts learnt how to write.
The numerals 0123456789 are Arabic too or are they not?
Stop living in the past. Only fools do so. Today the north is the HQ of illiteracy in Nigeria and today and the future is what counts for the wise.

aribisala0:

Just for accuracy and NOT to disparage the man. He IS not a Professor.

Those who believe he is should tell us where he is a Professor.
Perhaps there is a misunderstanding of what that means.
I do not know if he ever was but I know he is not NOW! If ever he was then the correct thing is former Professor!
A Professorship is not a chieftaincy title it STAYS in the institution.
A professor is a different matter, this is a term used in the US and some other places to indicate what in Nigeria is known as a lecturer.

So please tell  us which one he is and where?

I think it is safe to assume that when one uses the term professor e.g in resumes, in distinction to Professor especially for the consumption of American audiences one means lecturer in Nigerian parlance . A Chair or Tenure as it is called in America is a different matter. Did Soludo ever have a chair or tenure.

We must not confuse professor as used in the US to Professor in Nigera/British systems

Omo, it is like you drank molten Zinc this afternoon. Why don't you start by telling us who gave you the name aribisala0? While, you are still on that prove to us that you truly live in Birmingham. And where is your Birmingham, is it in the UK or in Niger republic?
Webmasters / Re: Should I Put My Blog In A Sub-directory, A Subdomain Or On Its Own Domain? by passyjango(m): 1:26am On Feb 14, 2012
You can use any method. However, having everything in one place (as in sub directory) may be easier to manage. In SEO terms there is not much advantage for any of them. Just make sure you have links pointing from your website to your blog so that it can share from some of the juice already gained by your website. This will also make it faster for search engines like Google to find and index your blog at least in the early stages.

Do not forget why you created the blog, which I believe is to drive traffic to your website. So make sure the blog does that by linking back to your conversion pages. Do I also need to remind you that the website and the blog should look alike.
Webmasters / Re: Learn How To Build A Linda Ikeji Business Blog Empire by passyjango(m): 1:13am On Feb 14, 2012
While I agree with you that passion is key to building a successful blog, I will disagree with using Linda as a model. Although she has the most popular blog in Nigeria, her blogging style will not work for most upcoming bloggers. She is more of a micro blogger posting very short posts. Her posts are interesting but they are still short.

It may be working for her because she is in the fashion, entertainment and gossip niche, but for most blogs it wont work. Her blogging style can only work for established business brands and celebrities. Upcoming bloggers need to pay attention to SEO and social media, which I do not believe Linda pays any attention to (especially SEO).

Most traffic to her blog has her name as part of the keyword. Which means that, if she were not known she would not be seeing as much traffic as she sees today. So upcoming bloggers need to pay attention to the keywords in their niche as most web surfers have no idea who they are yet, but they know what they are looking for. Target what they are looking for and they will find you and gradually you will build your own reputation.
Webmasters / Re: Nigerian Blogs by passyjango(m): 12:53am On Feb 14, 2012
For your blog to be successful, you require two ingredients. 1) Reputation 2) Traffic and it takes passion, time, extensive research and reading, as well as hard work to put these two ingredients together. You can post your link all over the place, but until you have taken the time to put these ingredients together, you may be wasting your time and of course server space.

Creating jobs is good, 370,000 jobs may not make any impact on the huge unemployment level in the country, but will make a huge difference to the youths you are lucky enough to secure them as well as their families. However, we need to move away from will and start getting things done.

Phones / Re: Airtel Nigeria Invests $600m In Network Capacity And Quality! by passyjango(m): 11:02pm On Dec 08, 2011
That is money wasted. I have not seen any improvements in Airtel over the past year. Of the four GSM networks, Airtel is the least exciting. They used to be great, my first modem was a Zain modem, but today I use it when it is very very very very necessary (every other network is off). I wish them luck, but if this is all they could achieve with $600 million, I suggest they spend $6 billion in the coming year.
Politics / Re: Fulani Herdsmen Kill Many In Benue Communities And Villages by passyjango(m): 10:50pm On Dec 08, 2011
Fulani herdsmen do not believe in or have loyalty for any entity called Nigeria, neither do they respect any borders within it. As far as a Fulani herdsman is concerned, any land grazed by his cattle belongs to him and he will kill to protect his father's land. So, take note. Similar incidents have happened in other parts of Nigeria be it South West or South East, South South, or even the North.

So, it did not start today and will not end anytime soon until the government comes up with a solution. For crying out loud, why should we still be relying on illiterate herdsmen for our beaf consumption in 2011 (almost 2012 and 8 years to the almighty 2020 when everything will happen)? When will we start to cultivate the ranch culture and mass production of beaf, so that a kg of beaf will be N100, rather than really on inefficient herdsmen?

We need to domesticate the Fulani herdsmen. It is wrong to leave a segment of society to waste just moving from North to South then North again ignorant of the world around them. If they refuse domestication, government should create special routes for them and make their routes as far as possible to the rest of us, as wild and domestic animals do not belong together.

Nigeria should also use tracking systems to track the different clusters of Fulani herdsmen. They should combine this with data from the multi-billion Naira satellite they launched some months ago, or/and GPS to monitor when they are deviating from their allocated routes towards settlements of domesticated people, so as to mobilise adequate security.

Back to the issue of ranch and mass beaf production, every state in Nigeria, especially those in the south should work towards encouraging and mobilising young people to go into cattle rearing in ranches. Once they are self sufficient in beaf production, the state should ban the herdsmen in their state. They can make laws making it compulsory that only beaf reared in ranches will be sold in the state, blocking the herdsmen from accessing their market.

Once they are blocked from the market, the herdsmen will have know option than to change their routes.

Ojukwu is no doubt a great man, who has already left his mark in history. I will remember him for fighting for what he believed in, something that the current cowardly generation of Nigerians can not do, but should learn. May he rest in peace.

Well its a very difficult thing to blog in Nigeria i must confess and the major challenge is light and good internet i have been blogging now for couple of year and i will say its difficult in Nigeria .To make matter worse we have some unless hosting company whose there down time is so high and you can never know until they host you.The most annoying thing about the hosting company is that while your own site is down there own will be running.Presently am having a problem with the two of my site with this my presently host.My advice to any body that want to blogging they he should get a foreign host that all

You must not host your blog in Nigeria, you can use a reliable foreign host. There are dozens on them online. Also do not buy your domain name from the same host so that it will be very easy to leave when you are not satisfied with their service. They will normally offer a free domain to tie you in, but it is best practice to buy your domain separately.
Education / Re: Osun To Distribute 150,000 Laptops To Students Free by passyjango(m): 1:21pm On Nov 19, 2011
I think this should signal a red alert at EFCC. Certain questions needs to be answered first,

1) Who owns the company or group of companies that will be responsible for importing and supplying the laptops?

2) By how much are the prices of the laptops inflated above market price?

Answering these questions, will enable us determine the true purpose of the laptops. Is it to boost education in Osun or to boost the economic condition of members of the Osun state ruling class?

shocked. By the way, how about the helmet policy for okada riders? That one has died a natural death, probably the contractors have sold-up all the helmets. The contractors have now brought in some new number plates and every car owner in Nigeria will be harassed to buy one until it is sold-up.
Business / Re: Nigeria Should Clean Up Oil Spills In Niger Delta - Dutch Cabinet by passyjango(m): 10:33pm On Nov 18, 2011
The guy made good sense. Nigeria is a major shareholder in Shell's joint venture operations in Nigeria represented by NNPC and so cannot wash off her hands off the oil spill. Although, I do not agree that only Nigeria should take care of the mess, I do not also think that only Shell should. Each member of the joint venture should contribute a stake proportional to their share in the joint venture. So, since Nigeria holds majority stake, they should contribute more for the cleanup. That is what joint venture is all about, you share cost and profits.

As for those comparing with BP in America it is different. The American government has no joint venture with BP. BP operates as a listed company in the stock exchange. All the government does is to regulate the industry and collect taxes.
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Unemployment Rate In Nigeria Hits 23.9% - NBS by passyjango(m): 12:06am On Nov 18, 2011
ekt_bear:

Heh. You are right. However, there is absolutely nothing the Nigerian government can do to fix unemployment unless it fixes electricity first.

The only labor intensive sectors fo the economy I know of are manufacturing and subsistence farming. For somewhat obvious reasons, you don't want to encourage subsistence farming grin

So unless Nigeria decides to tackle electricity (or alternatively, implement population control) we should expect unemployment rates to continue to rise.

Then they should improve electricity supply, responsible governments also do that. That is actually part of the engineering (or is it now re-engineering) that I am talking about.
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Unemployment Rate In Nigeria Hits 23.9% - NBS by passyjango(m): 11:22pm On Nov 17, 2011
It is possible for GDP to rise without commensurate increment in employment. However, all responsible governments specifically engineer growth to occur in sectors that are labour intensive in order to boast employment.

As for people arguing with the proportion of the unemployed, you need to understand that only those skilled to work and actively looking for work are captured as unemployed. So, if you are not applying for work or do not have skills considered as employable skills, you are not unemployed whether or not you are working. So, all the almajiris in the North and Area boys in Lagos and Onitsha are not unemployed as far as this stat is concerned.

However, I must confess that I have a problem with any stat that suggests that unemployment rate in Nigeria was 4.9% in 2007.
Phones / Re: MTN Crashes Blackberry Price To N1500 For Full Package by passyjango(m): 10:35pm On Nov 17, 2011
Lord_Reed:

@Passyjango
No Blackberry and other smart phones do not access the same infrastructure in a sense. Yes they both go through the same cell site but BB traffic is routed through RIMs servers which compresses the data for quicker delivery to BB phones. When you add other compressions like that offered by Opera then you can understand why the networks can offer cheaper access to BB users.

In the final analysis it is the same infrastructure. Yes, BB is routed through RIM but correct me if am wrong, what the network charges you is for upload/download on your phone (after compression on RIM servers) via their network and not for what goes through RIM's server. So it is the same final infrastructure that we all use.

I just want you to understand the reasons why operators are shifting towards limited BB data bundles and to prepare your mind for future price increments until an equilibrium point is reached. BB usage pattern is changing and data demand rising putting a toll on network infrastructure, so networks are reevaluating pricing (basic economics) to institute responsible usage of resources.
