Career / Re: Would The University You Attend Determine Job Opportunities? by passyjango(m): 2:14pm On Oct 25, 2011
Not at all, your university education is what you make of it. University education is about your ability to use the research tools, intellect, and facilities available to you like the library and internet to improve yourself and prepare yourself for future opportunities.

@Jarus there are people in Unilag just making up the numbers. Attending a particular school will not simply expose you, you have to take advantage of the opportunities the university provides.

Business / Re: Have You Purchased Anything From Amazon.com? by passyjango(m): 1:48pm On Oct 25, 2011
I buy books at Amazon.com and their services are okay. They show you what books other shoppers are buying in your interest areas. You also get valuable reviews of the book or item before you buy. However, not all items ship to Nigeria. As for the time it takes to receive your shipment, it depends on how stingy you are.

Knowing how Nigeria is I usually use secure shipping. It ensures that my shipment gets to me and on time. This year I have shipped books about four times and in all cases I received it within 7 days from DHL or UPS, although I noticed that DHL seems to be quicker than UPS. The guy who received his books after months probably used the standard shipping method. Secure shipping costs a lot more but of what use is saving on shipment if you are not sure the book will get to you.

Note you do not need a US address to ship items like books and DVD. Note also that for some items you may be required to pay import duties. Books attracts 0 import duty in Nigeria.

I paid with my USD denominated Visa card.
Romance / Re: Blackberry Fever And How It Affects Relationship? by passyjango(m): 7:44pm On Sep 23, 2011
Most BB phones in the market today are just junk with outdated hardware and software. If you must buy BB in 2011/2012 make sure you are buying the recent hardware with BlackBerry 7 OS like the Torch 9810 going for around N90,000 and the Bold Touch 9900 going for around N115,000. Anything else you are buying for now is not worthy of 2011.

As for the @Fancier, you need to remind the guy that you are not his wife yet, so he should know that he is just an ordinary boyfriend, because it appears the guy is now taking you for granted. He needs to know that he is not there yet and still need to make more effort to get there. He needs to separate his personal life from his business life. After all, the date will only last for a few hours and he can bury himself in his business afterwards.
Phones / Re: How True Is It That 09141 Is A Killer Number? by passyjango(m): 4:07pm On Sep 15, 2011
This is pure rubbish, you can not be killed just by answering a call. The problem is that no one will investigate this matter to put it to its logical conclusion. Instead of the media to conduct a thorough research and come up with the news behind the rumour, they will end up peddling the same rumour.

For example:
Let them show us those who claim their relations died.
Let them show us the call register that showed that the said person died as a result of receiving a call from the said number and not a heart attack.
Let an autopsy be conducted on the said victims (if any showed up) to ascertain the cause of death.
Let them show us the network from which the said call originated from, the last time I checked you can not get such a special number with dealing with the network operator directly.

It is time for Nigerians to begin to ask questions rather than take anything they hear. It is only in Nigeria that a man turns into a vulture, goat, dog, etc (too much nollywood if you ask me). This is 2011 and we still believe such crap. No wonder nothing works in this country, something is obviously wrong with our heads.

catso:

Everyone is complaining abt d man.
No one is giving advice what d woman can do to improve on her sexuality.
The woman shld do all things possible to improve her sex life, not only cumming inside that makes sex. There are other ways u can use to satisfy a man she gata learn that.
Sex in marriage is very very important, she shld not joke with it, it can turn the must faithful man to unfaithful if she doesn't want a second wife.

Moreso, Women loose appetite for sex as they grow in age, that is why i think its beta to marry a woman younger than u.

Sex is over rated (especially as a tool for preventing your partner from cheating), cheats will always cheat on you, even if you break your waist on the bed for them. The only thing is that when you catch them they will use the oldest excuse in the book, which is to claim that you do not satisfy them. This is because when you use this excuse, the attention moves away from you to your partner. Some people will even start simpatising with you even though you are the one who cheated on your partner.

Like I asked earlier, does this guy satisfy his wife? If the wife is not looking for a second husband, what gives him the right to do so? This is why single guys and babes should avoid self-centred people who think the world is all about them. They will never consider you, its all about them.

Ask him to go see a psychologist, for all we know he could be sick. Is he actually satisfying the wife or does he think that sex is all about him?
Romance / Re: Why Do Some Girls Like Abusive Relationship? by passyjango(m): 10:24pm On Aug 31, 2011
Most have low self esteem. For example, we have heard of cases were a father continually abuse their daughters for years. The question often why did they not run away. It is dominance, the father by beating then establishing dominance forcing them to fall in line. Human beings are animals without proper human social interaction.

Coming back to the subject, one likely scenario is that the guy is usually older than the girl hence can easily manipulate her. The guy is probably the one who broke her virginity and the only sex partner she has ever had. She has been pregnant for this guy severally and has conducted several abortions. She may have even lost her womb in the process.

Because this guy is a lot older, he has had a lot of time to establish dominance in the relationship, making himself the centre of the universe for the girl. So the girl will remain there until the guy is done with her. If the girl has lost her womb she may feel worthless and take anything just to be with the guy.
Family / Re: I'm Planning Of Marriage But The Question Is Can 30,000 Salary Sustain Both Of Us by passyjango(m): 3:57pm On Aug 31, 2011
Of course, N30,000 is possible but will not be easy. First you and your wife must be disciplined and cut your coat according to your size. The wedding should be modest, invite a few people that matter for your wedding. N80,000 will be enough for such a wedding. Your problem could be the traditional marriage. However, if you are low on budget you must not do everything, just the introduction and wedding.

If you are earning N30,000 make sure your wife is not still a student who you have to be spending money to train but someone who has completed NYSC and hence viable financially so that she could start contributing to the family. It is also important to avoid shallow ladies and go for ladies with mature minds.

Both of you should manage, but you must also aim for higher things. There are married people surviving on less than N30,000. The important thing is not to live above your means. Look for a modest accommodation, buy food in-bulk instead of in small quantity. For example a bag of rice is cheaper in the long run compared to cups, the same goes for other food stuffs and FMCGs.

Remember that what counts at the end of the day is not how much you earn but how much you save and how wisely you invest your little savings to create other income streams.

Do not mind people telling you to wait until your situation improves except if you are still young (less than 30 years). If you are already 35 or more and still earning N30,000, you have nothing to wait for especially if their is a worthy lady in the picture.

Family / Re: Would You Pay Bribe For Your Child To Pass Exams? by passyjango(m): 4:13pm On Aug 29, 2011
If your child failed Maths or some other subject for 4 or 5 times it is your fault and the solution is not bribery. The first time that the child fails, you should investigate and find out why and take remedial measures. Our problem is that most of us lack analytical skills, when things happen, instead of us to calm down and analyse properly we choose to panic and expose ourselves to corrupt tendencies.

We blame JAMB, WAEC, NECO, Govt, teachers, every-other person but ourselves. The bad news is that when you blame others for your misfortunes, you are enslaving yourself. Take responsibility for your failures and the failings in your society and you will empower yourself to solving them.

When a child fails a subject, it could be because of a shaky foundation. The solution is not to continue building on the shaky foundation, but to strengthen the foundation first. For example, a kid may be in SS3, but knows very little of SS1 and SS2 maths. How do you expect him to pass WAEC with such a hollow foundation in maths? The solution is to get a private teacher and instruct the teacher to start from JS3 maths up to SS3.

If you do not have money for a private tutor, buy maths textbooks for the child from JS3 to SS3 and encourage him/her to read it. Make sure he/she solves the exercises. Maths is best learnt by solving problems. Forget about lessons, it will not work for such a child. Bribery is never a solution.
Family / Re: Would You Pay Bribe For Your Child To Pass Exams? by passyjango(m): 1:43am On Aug 29, 2011
Do not be surprised that some of the parents will not buy textbooks for their children, yet they will find money to bribe for them to pass. Others do not have the time to help or encourage their children to do their homework, yet they will find time to seek out someone to bribe for their child to pass. From morning till night, kids are watching movies and yet their delinquent parents expect them to pass.

There is no parental upbringing as most kids are solely responsible for their own upbringing. Most of what our kids know today are things they learn from other kids or on TV or other media. The few things they learn from us are often negative like bribing, lying, making trouble with neighbours, gossiping, etc.

Some people are talking about the Nigerian system. Who created the system? Is it not the same delinquent Nigerian parents like You? Politicians, Ministers, Law makers, Commissioners, WAEC/NECO staff, lecturers are they not mostly parents?

That is why there are no jobs, no power, bad roads, broken down refineries, hunger, and insecurity. The funny thing is that some of us are expecting that things will get better in future. If the current crop of leaders who went to school when there was some little sanity in the Education system cannot fix Nigeria, is it the bunch of cretins that we are pushing through school that will fix it?

That is why I encourage parents and kids who still believe in the power of knowledge. They should not be deterred as I foresee a future in Nigeria where there will be so many cretins and olodos that the few who patiently apply themselves to acquiring relevant knowledge will become like Gods (in hot demand).

We must begin to think about the consequences of our actions on our future. You can not cheat nature, you can only cheat yourself, for whatever you sow you shall reap.

premechaz:

If you dont do it, others will. As a parent, you are obligated to do whatever would give your child the edge, and if it involves bribing, so be it.
Give your child an edge on what? Paying for your child to pass an exam is like telling him he is not good enough. You are simply killing his confidence and don't be surprised if after his education he will still come running to you to secure a job for him. Such children will never make effort at anything, they will always be looking for an easy way out and then you and parents like you will start complaining on how youths of thesedays no longer cherish hardwork.

However, I commend your honesty because I am sure that most Nigerian parents will do the same, if they can afford whatever is being demanded.

denzel2009:

Whether you like it or not, iPhone has cornered the market. I don't even use the phone but it seems everybody has one. I foresee nokia closing shops soon.
Maybe in London. Nokia is not going to close shop. Do not forget that 10 year ago some of us were expecting Apple to close shop, look at where they are today. There are still over a billion people yet to own a smartphone, so the market is still large especially in emerging markets. Even as we speak there are other gadgets waiting to be invented. So do not think that once you have seen the iPhone/iPad, you have seen it all.

Just one good premium product from Nokia and all the noise will be over. The problem that Nokia has is not that they are not selling phones (Nokia still sells a lot more phones than Apple), their problem is that they are selling mostly in emerging markets like Nigeria with lots of poor people and low margins compared to Apple that target premium markets with high margins.
Phones / Re: What Is So Special About The iPhone? by passyjango(m): 7:15pm On Aug 27, 2011
iPhone 4 is an overpriced hardware targeted at the rich, people who have nothing better to do with their money and people with easy credit. Some talk about millions of app,  how many of those apps do you actually use? Apple is a great marketing company and knows how to sell a product to the extent that people will see the need to buy, even when there is non.

Since the most of the comparism is largely between Nokia phones and iPhone, I will like to say that it is unreasonable to compare two phones just because both of them are phones. For example Nokia N8 cannot be compared with the iPhone 4 without first accounting the price point of the two phones.

Nokia N8 is around N60,000 while the iPhone 4 is around N125,000, so it is mischievous if not plain stupid for anyone to compare the two. iPhone 4 is about twice the price, but does not offer anywhere near twice what the N8 offers.

I have even seen people compare the C6 with the iPhone 4. One thing is sure if Nokia makes a phone at the same price point as Apple iPhone 4, it will be much better.
Culture / Re: Ever Witnessed A Witch Confessing? by passyjango(m): 5:16pm On Aug 25, 2011
Witches exist, but they are not as mysterious as we make them. For example, they do not fly at night or drink human blood. Witchcraft is also an occupation just like fortune tellers, diviners, etc. Witches are also enemies of progress, for example a woman who always nags and does not allow the husband to have a peace of mind is witch, so also is a man with similar attributes. Also, a politician who loots public resources leaving his/her people to suffer is a witch.

Phones / Re: What Are The Top 5 Cell Phones Used In Nigeria? by passyjango(m): 10:29pm On Aug 23, 2011
I think a bit of education is required here. First of all it is important to know that mobile phones have different platforms. For a category of mobile phones called smartphones the major platforms include Android, Symbian, BlackBerry, Windows Phone and iOS.

Apple iPhone is based on iOS,
BlackBerry phones run BlackBerry OS,
Motorola, Samsung Galaxy, Sony Ericsson, some HTC, some LG, run Android
Nokia runs Symbian, MeeGo, and will soon add Wndows phone OS to the mix.

So, just because a phone does not run Android those not make it inferior to others. Every OEM chooses the platform to go for and seek license to use it.

There are also phones called feature phones, which if you ask me are smartphones based on my own definition of smartphones which is any phone that can easily download and run a third party application. Nokia feature phones are based on Series 40 platform eg. include the very popular 5130 Xpressmusic which according the Opera state of the mobile web of May, 2011 is the second most popular phone used for browsing internet in Nigeria, second only to another Nokia Series 40 based phone, the Nokia 2700c.

It is also important to note that the top ten phones are all Nokia phones. This gives credence to the fact that Nokia is still the most popular at least for internet enabled phones in Nigeria here is the list:

Nokia 2700c
Nokia 5130 XpressMusic
Nokia 2690
Nokia 3110c
Nokia N72
Nokia 2330c
Nokia X2
Nokia C1
Nokia C3
Nokia 2600c

Some of you may still want to argue that this is so because only Nokia users use Opera mini, so I will provide the top ten phones for United States as quality control. Here are the top ten phones used for browsing the web in the United States:

Apple iPhone
LG VM265
LG VM510
BlackBerry 8520 “Curve”
BlackBerry 9700 “Bold”
HTC EVO 4G
BlackBerry 8530 “Curve”
Alcatel OT-800
BlackBerry 8330 “Curve”
BlackBerry 9630 “Tour”

The problem with some of us is that we read something in foreign tech news sources like Engadget and Cnet and we believe to be true. Just because Nokia is no longer selling so much in the US does not mean it does not sell in Nigeria. Nokia still has the largest user base in Nigeria, so if are an app developer and you are developing for BlackBerry without first developing for Nokia, you must be sick in the head (especially if your target is Nigeria).

Nokia Series 40 is the dominant platform in Nigeria for any serious developer that wants millions to access their application, then Symbian, then Android and BlackBerry should sort out themselves for third place (Android will be taking the third spot soon and maybe even challenge for the second spot).

X-factoria:

The power of the National Judicial Council is not subject to any court of law. The body has authority to deal with disciplinary cases involving members of the bench. Jonathan cannot really do more than refer the case back to them if he so wish albeit he should not be seen as encouraging indiscipline among judicial officers. So, there is really nothing he can do about it.

Make una leave Jonathan alone abeg!!!!!!!

You do not know what you are talking about. Are you saying that NJC is above the law? Even the Nigerian constitution makes it clear that any law that goes contrary to it is to that extent null and void. I am not a lawyer, but I know this.

No one is saying that NJC does not have the power to remove Salami. The argument is, why do that with a case still pending in court. Why not clear the court case first? What is so special about removing Salami that you are willing to do it in contravention of the laws of the land.

Then for the coconut head, why did he not seek proper legal advice before rushing to enforce the recommendation? What does he stand to gain?

Phones / Re: What Are The Top 5 Cell Phones Used In Nigeria? by passyjango(m): 1:23pm On Aug 23, 2011
For me it should be:

Nokia
Samsung
LG
Blackberry
Sony Ericsson/Moto

Anyone putting BB or iPhone ahead of Nokia and Samsung does not know anything about Nigeria's mobile phone market. Remember the question was "What Are The Top 5 Cell Phones Used In Nigeria?" not your top five most preferred cell phones. So, it is about current user base (It is not even about current sales which I still believe Nokia and Samsung is still ahead of the rest). Nokia and Samsung sale more phones in Nigeria than the rest put together. This is because they make great phones at a good bargain. BlackBerry comes with outdated hardware and are overpriced. iPhone (by iPhone i mean iPhone 4, if you are still using iPhone 3GS you are using outdated hardware that belongs to the museum) is on the class of its own but out of the reach of most Nigerians.

I did not include Chinese because they are fakes and made from unorganised and unreconisable brands. Although Techno, which is gaining in popularity, has sold lots of phones in the past months, but I do not think they have sold enough phones to have grown their user base to rival the ones I have listed. It takes years to build user base. Nokia did not do it in a year.
Politics / Re: IBB Fires OBJ Again! by passyjango(m): 11:48am On Aug 19, 2011
IBB is a great guy, one of the best leaders this country has had democracy or military rule (unfortunately). Some claim he invented corruption, but as far back as the 1960s there was uncontrollable corruption in this country, which led to the first military intervention. Even if he invented corruption, why have we who are angels not stopped or reduced it? Or cant an invention be destroyed.

Some call him a fool. If IBB is a fool, then we all are irredeemable fools, because it is only a country of irredeemable fools that will be stolen blind by a fool. Someone even claimed that he invented assassinations in Nigeria, when we all know (or at least the intelligent ones) that assassinations are as old as this country. At least men like Ironsi, Balewa were all assassinated in the 60s many years before IBB became president.

I know you hate IBB (even though most you do not know why, and hence making so much effort to justify your hatred), but you should know that there are a few intelligent people reading your post. So, you should make more effort not to insult their intelligence.

No wonder IBB is still walking free, despite all you haters accuse him of doing. To nail a great man like IBB, you need evidence and facts, not cock and bull story. If you want to nail IBB, you have to rise above your hate and emotions, do a thorough job and build evidence that is reasonable.

People say things based on their understanding and personal prejudices. I have not even been 1km near IBB, so I am not an official spokesman. I only see the need to add my own perspective. We all must not have the same perspective.
Politics / Re: 2333 by passyjango(m): 3:44pm On Aug 18, 2011
IBB is a lot better than Obasanjo. Obasanjo failed in many respects so also did IBB. But comparing the two, IBB is a star. Yes the media have problems with him for their suspicion that he may have killed one or a number of their comrades and at such have continued their personal vendetta against him. But, those like me who have tried to objectively judge IBB's administration, may uncover something differently.

We talk about what happened to the oil wind fall. But what about what happened during privatisation? Or what happened to the NIPP projects? Why are our kids failing WAEC every year? Why is Boko Haram bombing the hell out of us? At least these have more impact on our lives today. Like I have said somewhere in this forum before, we concentrate so much in the injustices of the past that we overlook the injustices of today.

The question is, all the things we accuse IBB of doing over 17 years ago, are they still not happening today? Is oil money still not being looted? Are journalists still not being killed? Are politicians still not assassinating perceived opponents? So, while we dwell on history (which we cannot change), we are overlooking the present (which we can change). History is there for us to learn from it, not dwell on it.

Religion / Re: Does God Truly Exist? I Am Dumbfounded by passyjango(m): 12:37am On Aug 16, 2011
God exists, so also do spirits. There are forces in this world that are yet to be accounted for by science. The weakness of science is that it assumes things do not exist until they are proven to exist. So if you wait for science, it maybe too late, because science is always limited by advances in technology.

For example, so far there are no concrete proof of life in other planets. But just because we cannot scientifically prove it, does not mean that life do not exist in other planetary bodies. It is foolish to think man is just body, blood, brain, heart and other organs. There is another dimension of human existence that science is yet to fully understand.

However, God does not need your belief to exist, neither does he need your prayers. God is complete in himself. In fact, you need God more than he needs you. Even if you do not believe in him, he will continue to love you and intervene in your life when need be. So being an atheist does not remove you from the control of God, he made you and will always be with you for all eternity or till your damnation.

A father should be blamed for how his son turns out. He was his responsibility and he failed him, that is probably why he turned out the way he did. I would have agreed with you if it were the other way around. I will not want to go into the psychology of how he became a terrorist, but I am sure his father is not totally free of any blame.

However, you do not need to be a good father to be a good banker, so I do not see how his failings to his child is relevant in this case.

Have you ever lived in a compound (or yard) where resources are shared like toilet, PHCN meter, water, etc? If you have, you will know communism is not practical. Take the issue of settling the PHCN bill. Woe betide you if you are the one responsible for collecting the payment bill, you will be hearing all sorts of stories from your fellow tenants. Some will even lock themselves inside pretending not to be at home.

They will give you every excuse in the world just to avoid payment of their bills, yet they will be the first to turn on their TV when the light is on. That is human nature and that is why communism will always fail until maybe when we evolve to better beings in the next phase of evolution in some millions of years to come.
