It’s not surprising that many people aren’t comfortable asking for more money once their job search has ended and they have an offer in front of them. If the salary is reasonable, they don’t want to jeopardize the opportunity now that they’ve gotten this far. And some job seekers are even more likely to feel this way than they did before COVID-19 hit. Even with a larger labor pool, companies still face competition from other businesses seeking the same candidates. That’s why the most in-demand professionals can still command competitive wages. If you have specialized skills and an impressive resume, you could be leaving money on the table if you don’t negotiate a salary offer. Thirty-six percent of managers recently surveyed by Robert Half said they are more likely to negotiate starting salary with new hires than they were a year ago; another 50% said they are as likely to. Still, it would be a mistake to bluster into the starting salary discussion without proper preparation. Most hiring managers will give you the opportunity to do some thinking about the offer and won’t expect an immediate answer. Here are eight tips for how to negotiate salary that can help you tactfully and confidently ask for what you want. 1. DO familiarize yourself with industry salary trends You need to enter a salary negotiation as informed as possible. Information is your strongest ally. To get a current, realistic view of the compensation landscape in your field. You’ll find the going rate for your position and experience level. Pay particular attention to the In-Demand Positions or Critical Roles sections of the Salary Guides. You can respond to the job offer more confidently if you find out the mean wage for the position you’re in the running for, or one of today’s hottest jobs. The employer may be having a tough time finding someone with enough skills and experience, and that opens the door to negotiate higher pay. Also of interest: While 44% of managers surveyed by Robert Half said they have made no changes to starting salaries, 28% have increased them since the pandemic started. 2. DON’T fail to build your case Once you receive the salary offer, don’t just counter with a higher number. Even if your research supports it, you’ll be more successful if you explain why you feel you deserve more. Highlight your strengths, detailing all the extras the firm would get from someone with your track record. Before negotiating, jot down concrete examples of how your skills and experience will benefit your new company’s bottom line. Possessing certifications or specialized technical skills, for example, can enhance your ability to do the job, so don’t fail to mention them. By tying your strengths to the role you’ll be taking on, you’ll make a solid case for why you should be paid more than the initial offer. 3. DON’T stretch the truth Complete honesty is paramount when negotiating salary. There’s no better way to see your offer withdrawn than having a hiring manager find out you invented a competing job offer or inflated your salaries from past jobs. 4. DO factor in perks and benefits Salary negotiations often include some give-and-take on employee perks and benefits. It may be less costly than a bump in salary for the employer to give ground on extra vacation days, flexible hours or, especially today, a work-from-home schedule. Consider what’s valuable to you and what would make an offer more attractive. If you’re considering multiple offers, remember to directly compare health insurance coverage, retirement savings plans and other benefits to make an informed decision. Also factor in perks such as professional development opportunities with the potential employer. 5. DON’T wing it This may sound like overkill to some people, but it’s a good idea to ask a friend or mentor to practice with you the conversation you’re likely to have with the hiring manager. The ideal partner is someone from the corporate world — a business-savvy person who can coach you on projecting confidence and answering unexpected questions. Running through your delivery several times can make you feel more sure of yourself heading into the salary discussion. 6. DO know when to wrap it up A reasonable employer won’t withdraw an offer just because you tried to negotiate. But dragging out the salary negotiation can frustrate the hiring manager and start out your relationship on a sour note. If the company can’t meet your requirements after a few discussions, respectfully withdraw and focus on opportunities that better match your compensation expectations. 7. DON’T forget to get everything in writing Once you and the hiring manager settle on a compensation package, ask for written documentation. Besides the salary amount, it should include any special arrangements such as a signing bonus or allowance for moving expenses and a job description and a list of responsibilities for your new role. Ensure the document is signed by both you and the employer. Some companies may provide this automatically as part of an employment contract, but if not, request some type of informal documentation. 8. DON’T make it only about you Remember that most managers don’t love negotiating, either. Your future employer is not your adversary. Keeping your tone positive when you’re negotiating salary and perks will help you more effectively navigate these discussions. If you’d like to get a better starting salary offer, you have to ask for it. Job seekers too often accept the first number that's put on the table. But whether the economy is strong or uncertain, employers are eager to bring on team members with specialized skills and expertise that can help them the most. Homework, tact and confidence are the keys to your success. https://www.roberthalf.com/blog/salaries-and-skills/be-ready-for-salary-negotiations-with-these-8-tips?utm_campaign=Candidate-Newsletter-US&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=Newsletter&utm_content=%%%3dv(%40title)%3d%%&sfi=0033w00003rwE5vAAE |

A recent IBD poll shows that only roughly 2-3% of Americans have not made up their minds on who to vote for... The winner of the election will likely be the candidate that turns out his base the most |
PrideofLincoln1:Yes, the road to her confirmation is clear, but we still need her to answer some tough questions. Moreover, I’ll ask these additional questions “Courts are not designed to solve every problem or right every wrong in our public life.”--Judge Amy Coney Barrett in her prepared statement to be delivered to the Senate's Committee on the Judiciary on Monday, October 12, 2020. So, Judge Barrett, does that mean that Supreme Court decisions such as: (a) Brown vs. Topeka, which ruled that "separate but equal" was unconstitutional; that black American citizens had no right to protest their apartheid existence in America and should not have been adjucated? or (b) Roe vs. Wade, which ruled that a woman had a right to an abortion? or (c) Obergefell vs. Hodges, which ruled that same-sex couples could indeed marry and be afforded the same rights and protections as "traditional" married couples? These are just three Supreme Court cases, "settled law" in the words of recently-minted Justice Brett Kavanaugh, that you would, if you could, remove legal protections from minorities, women, and the LGBTQ communities--just to name a few-- because you think that these historically aggrieved, marginalized and menaced people (by a hostile majority) had no standing to bring their cases before the law? |
Here are some questions I hope get asked of Judge Barrett: What exactly do you mean by "The Kingdom of God," and how do you perceive members of the bar building it, as you have advised graduates at Notre Dame? President Trump has stated that he wants you confirmed because he expects you to support him in suits involving the current election. Given this, why would you not recuse in any of these proceedings? You are on record opposing abortion. Do you feel that a woman's bodily autonomy is unconstitutional? Is this not a civil rights question? Do you feel that personal morality is a compelling force in making decisions that effect the lives of all people? You have said that you try to see through the eyes of those you are deciding against. What do you see through the eyes of someone who has been denied health care insurance because the protections of preexisting conditions have been stripped away with the ACA? Do you personally feel comfortable having your nomination and confirmation to the bench rushed through in the middle of election now in process? |
PrideofLincoln1:Yes!! They deserved the title, especially after going through the emotions of losing Kobe |
salford1:Funny enough, the Republicans controlled the Congress in 2015 when the Benghazi investigations were in full swing, yet that Republican congress returned exactly ZERO criminal referrals to the DOJ! At this point, a lot of Republicans are clutching at straws |
raumdeuter:I wholeheartedly agree with this. |
It’s true that Mike Pence went over his allotted time a lot, and was mansplaining a lot.. But Senator Harris stood her ground and put Pence’s feet to the fire on the Trump administration’s record. |
Update: The doctors are hoping to be able to discharge Trump from Walter Reed tomorrow. |
This EPL will be the toughest in history! We have 6-7 good teams could challenge for the title. |
Na so Everton go play Champions League next season |
Seunpaul01:FYI, a vaccine does NOT cure an illness; it only prevents you from contracting the disease. |
Trump will be working from the Walter Reed hospital Thoughts and prayers for him and the First Lady |
I hope President Trump and Melania recover from Covid |

Messi and Ronaldo are paired in the same UCL group for the first time!! |
The folks who see nothing wrong with Trump’s performance at the debate are the same folks who would support a stupid policy by the NYSC requiring married women to change their names to their husband’s last names |
Mintum:But when you go on and encourage a far-right group to “stand-by”, do you think he condemned White Supremacy fully?? |
obixcel:Biden has condemned the looting and violence. I don’t see how it’s reasonable to expect a non-office holder to be calling elected mayors to advise them on how to handle the violence. |
It's true what Mark Twain or whoever said: Never argue (read: debate) with an idiot, they will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. I'm seeing people say there were two Idiots on the stage (I only saw one), so I guess it worked? I honestly don't even know how you blame Chris Wallace for this. People say he was worked in Trump's favor, but did he? It must be hard work when three people are in a room, and two people are held to standards of decorum while the third one can do whatever, and we're like: 'oh, we know how he is, but you, why would you tell a sitting president to shut up? I can't stand by that, that's disrespectful.' Well, when you lower the office of the president like this, anything goes, right? The thing Trump was clearly trying to do was trigger a fit of stuttering from Biden. That's the only reason he kept inserting words, interjecting, trying to distract Biden, and trying to interrupt his flow of thoughts. Literally impossible to debate with that kind of person without a mute function. (Which, dear Lord, please enact one by the next debate so the rest of us don't suffer). The fact that Trump had the effrontery to bring up Swine flu with COVID on his hands, shows there's no depth to which he wouldn't go. We're almost in October 2020, and he's still saying that: we're not sure how effective masks are. Still bragging about 40,000 people showing up maskless and within close proximity at his rallies. 'No one wants to come out and see you, Joe.' And I won't even talk about how he brought up Hunter's drug problem and dishonorable discharge at the same time as praising his own handling of the military and vets, at the same time as cutting off Biden when he was talking about his deceased decorated son, when he should know the mental toll it takes being a veteran and how many of them may end up struggling with PTSD, drug use, etc. I rotated at the VA as a student in ambulatory care, and almost every one I saw had either Diabetes or hypertension PLUS PTSD. Hunter may not be a saint, but let's see who is a saint out here. And oh by the way, he is NOT running for president. Biden got steamrolled because he could barely get a word in, and when he did try to talk over Trump, it was painful for the rest of us. How can we be watching a presidential debate and Trump blurts out: 'You're not smart. You graduated last or very near last in you class at Delaware.' Like huh? Are we all in the same place? Biden missed a couple of opportunities to respond to Trump, especially regarding the hundreds of judges seats left open for Trump to fill. Um, Obama nominated candidates to fill those seats, just as he did to fill Scalia's seat in the Supreme Court, and the republicans blocked it until Trump got elected. Which I won't complain about because they had the senate. You have the power, you do what you can to push forward your agenda. Fair is fair. But you can't point to that as a failure of the previous administration. That's just weird. Anyway, one thing I was glad I didn't hear was the oft repeated lie about full-term abortions. Like, Democrats want to approve full-term abortions where they rip babies out of the womb at birth and basically kill them. The fact that people believe that and hold on to that as the reason they can't support someone like Biden tells you the power of a lie. Full term abortion. Good grief. I think there will be violence at the polls. I've thought so for some time, but now I'm sure there'll be. Not everywhere, but in some places. I also think there will be tampering with mail votes. Everyone just be careful over the next few weeks. |
highflyer012020:BTW, Trump also supports gay marriage. In fact, the promotion of equal rights for LGBT people is a part of his foreign policy. |
MaziAlaye:If Trump kept to the rules he AGREED to before the debate, there would have been no need for Wallace to interrupt Trump. It’s very simple |
MaziAlaye:He’s been saying he doesn’t support “defunding the police”, long before the debate |
Moving forward, this should be the starting line up: ————————Mendy——————- —Azpi———Zouma——T. Silva——Chilwell—— ———————Kovacic—-Kante————— ————————-Barkley——————— —-—-Ziyech———Werner——Pulisic——- |
We surely need a front three of Pulisic, Werner and Ziyech for the Champions League!!! |
