Nigerian govt and stupid projects. How can you provide free internet access to a whole state and believe the company will not run out of gas? |
Enugu to provide free Wireless Internet By Efem Nkanga, 10.23.2008 Thursday, October 23, 2008 ICT In a move aimed at providing the citizens of Enugu State with access to communications, the Sullivan Chime administration is set to provide wireless internet at zero cost to the citizens of the state. In furtherance of this objective, the Enugu State government has signed a memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zinox Technologies, foremost technology in the country to provide access. The MoU, according to the state Commissioner for Science and Technology, Chuka Anyogu, will lead to enablement of free internet access in the state. The internet access will ensure that every one with a computer or laptop needs not pay to get access to the world wide web. This initiative, which is in keeping with the strategy of the state government to provide information and communication access to every citizen of the state, according to him, will lead to the digitalisation of the state in no time. The company, which signed the MoU, Zinox Technologies is known for spearheading the IT revolution with the introduction of the made in Nigeria brand of computers. Zinox, which currently produces over 1,000 computers per day is at the forefront of enabling the digitalisation of the country and has a project called the ‘Computerise Nigeria Initiative’, which is helping to gradually change the orientation of schools and offices and enabling a computer literate citizenry through the initiative. The ‘Computerise Nigeria’ project is a non governmental organisation aimed at encouraging Nigerians and governments in Nigeria to adopt the computer as a major working and play equipment. The Chairman of Zinox Technologies and the Computerise Nigeria project, Leo Stan Ekeh had at several fora warned that there was an urgent need to make Nigeria a participant in the emerging global knowledge economy. He expressed the belief that because the educational system in Nigeria is not equipped to produce globally competitive graduates, the products of education in Nigeria could not guarantee the development of the country. According to him, Nigeria must, as a matter of urgency, shift emphasis from luxury goods to productive tools that would rehabilitate the educational policies and grow the nation’s economy. Ekeh reiterated that the ‘Computerise Nigeria’ initiative had a mandate to meet the main objectives of setting up this NGO which is to drastically reduce the prices of computers in Nigeria and skill a lot of Nigerians in this area in order to turn Nigeria into a knowledge driven. Zinox computers is expected to expand its production facility in the next one year in a bid to hit the target of 2,000 systems per day in order to meet the high increasing demand of the Zinox brand. Ekeh stated that Zinox has kept to it’s pledge of producing world-class PCs, servers, laptops and UPS that will help bridge the digital divide in Nigeria. According to him, Zinox, computers over the years have overcome local skepticism for Made in Nigeria goods with multinationals standardising on our products. He added that the quality of the Zinox systems is made outstanding by the Zinox no-story warranty support policy, which is administered from 10 support centres in 10 branches across Nigeria. He further reiterated that ‘’it is on record today that no other IT brand in Nigeria is supported by the vast network of branches like Zinox Computers. According to him, ‘’the quality of our products described by Microsoft as "surpassing international quality standards", at inception, has continued to grow, earning respect for Nigeria in the process. http://odili.net/news/source/2008/oct/23/204.html |
Finally, EFCC probes Obasanjo FRIDAY OLOKOR, COSMAS EKPUNOBI, Abuja THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday disclosed that it would commence investigation of ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo today. Already, a team of the commission’s investigators are to be mandated to being the exercise. Spokesperson of the EFCC, Mr. Femi Babfemi give the assurance when a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) led by Mr. Debo Adeniran protested to the commission’s zonal office in Ikoyi, Lagos where they resubmitted a petition for a probe and prosecution of Obasanjo. Babafemi assured the group that the Executive chairman of EFCC, Mrs. Farida Waziri would leave no stone unturned to rid the nation of corrupt leaders. "We are very much with you. The Executive chairman of EFCC, Mrs. Farida Waziri has mandated us to receive your petition on her behalf and we can assure you that immediately she receives it, operations on the investigation of Obasanjo will commence in the next 24 Hours," he stated. The EFCC chairman, according to him, has always made it clear that the crusade against graft is a fight which must be won. While informing the protesters that the EFCC is very much in support of their agitation for a graft-free society, he said that the anti-corruption regulation campaign would soon be launched in Abuja in a few weeks time. Receiving the petition on behalf of its chairman, EFCCs Head of Operations in Lagos, Mr. Zubeine Muazu appreciated the efforts of CACOL and assured that justice is done to ensure that every person indicted does not escape punishment. Zubeiru later handed over the petition to Mr. Umar Sanda, EFCC’s former Head of General Investigations, who has now heads its e-governance unit. Sanda who received the earlier petition last year responded to allegations by Mr. Debo Adeniran that about one year after submitting the petition seeking for the prosecution of Obasanjo, the EFCC has been shielding him from facing the music. Said he; "it is one thing for us to have received the petition but it is another thing to act on it. I assure you that the chairman will begin to act on it immediately she receives it. Things will begin to unfold in the next few days". Before their reception by officials of the EFCC who defied the rain, Adeniran had accused the commission of collaborating with the government of President Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua to shield Obasanjo from prosecution. "We have been able to establish a Prima facie case against Obasanjo. It is the duty of the EFCC to investigate that", he sated. Nigerians, he threatened will move against the commission if it refuses to act fast on the prosecution of Obasanjo. Meanwhile, Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mrs. Farida Waziri yesterday asked the Senate to quickly expunge the controversial immunity clause in the 1999 constitution to enable the agency prosecute any serving state governor that may be indicted of corruption. The EFCC boss at a stormy session with the senate committee on Drugs and financial crimes however said that the agency has decided to shift its search light on the activities of the chief executives of banks following the alleged shady deals in the financial institution. Already the agency has strengthened its Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) to keep close watch on the banks chief executive in line with the renewed posture of the commission to sanitize the industry Mrs. Waziri who insisted on the establishment of special court to try indicted corrupt persons told the stunned audience that some serving state chief executive have been hiding under the immunity clause to plunder the treasury of their states. The agency, was prepared to launch full scale offensive against chief executives of banks and other private persons in a renewed bid to sanitize the banking sector She insisted that the immunity clause was un necessary saying "immunity makes people to be careless and reckless." "What is happening to the country is because of our leadersThe people of this county queue in the rain and the sun to vote them and they promise when they get there they totally forget. It is against even God’s injunction for this to be happening 48 years after independence. "Just take a trip to the local areas and see. Not a foot path, not even water. People will go and drill a hole and wait there and water gather and they are drinking worm infested water and when they are sick there are no clinics, no drugs. "The immunity (Clause) makes people to be careless and reckless. I tell you, somebody just bought a house worth N1billion in Abuja and he has just been made a governor." "The first job of law enforcement any where in the World is prevention of crime. "In preventing crime, you can take steps, you can map out strategies and on suspicion that a criminal offence is committed or about to be committed you can go in there. There is a section in the EFCC Act that allows you to go in there on suspicion that an economic crime is being committed. The EFCC boss at the meeting yesterday urged the senate to give accelerated passage to the bill seeking to amend its existing law to enable it expand its scope to include among others, powers to seize assets belonging to suspects before their conviction in court. It is also seeking the establishment of a special economic and financial crimes court and a further amendment empowering it to continue prosecution of suspects who are challenging the jurisdiction of the court where they are charged until the dispensation of such petitions. Waziri said the Nigeria Finance Intelligence Unit (NFIU) in the EFCC has been strengthened to keep close eye on the activities of chief executives and top officials of banks to ensure accountability and strict adherence to operational regulations in the sector. She said the commission has started receiving useful information from the unit, which will enhance its surveillance on the bank officials who are suspected to be living above their means through dubious insider dealing in banks. In her words "my next focus will be in banks. We have strengthened our Nigeria Finance Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to keep close eye on the activities on the chief executives and directors of banks. We know how much they earn and we know their life styles and what they are doing". Stating that the EFCC has resolved to take the war against financial crimes to the people, Waziri lamented that some politicians and counsels to accused persons exploit some loops holes in the law to escape prosecution but assured that the commission under her is working out strategies including amendment to the laws to check the problem. She urged the National Assembly to ensure that the immunity clause is removed from the constitution, if the fight against corruption and financial crime will be won, saying retaining the clause in the constitution is encouraging financial indiscipline and recklessness in the system. She said serving state governors enjoying constitutional immunity engage in sharp practices and cover their tracts before leaving office. http://odili.net/news/source/2008/oct/23/802.html |
Babalola, ex-SDP deputy national chairman, murdered By Adeolu Adeyemo Thursday, October 23, 2008 Unidentified gunmen on Tuesday night invaded the Idi-Ape, Ibadan, Oyo State residence of the former Deputy National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Chief Augustus Babalola and shot him dead. The circumstances surrounding the murder could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report, but eyewitnesses told the Nigerian Tribune that Babalola was was shot in the heart at the gate of his house while returning from church. Sources said the politician was rushed to a nearby hospital before he gave up the ghost. It was gathered that there was a heavy traffic jam and restriction of vehicular and human movements in the area as people around scampered for safety, while operation lasted only a few minutes. “Infact, the gunmen, who dressed in good attires, came out of a very fine vehicle and nobody could suspect that they could be involved in such an unlawful act until they demonstrated it,” an eyewitness said. Before he was killed, the gunmen reportedly demanded for the key of his vehicle which he gave to them and later shot him on the chest and made away with the vehicle which they later abandoned in a place in the city that day. Speaking on the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Miss Bisi Okuwobi, confirmed the incident and described it as unfortunate. She said the police would get to the root of the matter as thorough investigation would be conducted. http://odili.net/news/source/2008/oct/23/604.html |

Travail of a traditional ruler •Loses wife, daughter within three months over throne Monday, October 20, 2008 - Written by Albert Akpor Escapes assassination attempts thrice •Says tragedy would not dissuade him "IF killing my innocent wife and daughter for what they did not know is part of the sacrifice I have to pay for accepting to lead my people, then, I will not be dissuaded. Their untimely and unwarranted death was meant to cripple me and make me withdraw from the mandate to lead my people to the promised land; but from what you can see now, I am ready to even sacrifice my life to correct the anomalies that had pervaded our community for a long time now." Those were the heart rendering lamentations of Oniseri of Oseri -Osun, His Royal Highness, Oba Shamusideen Amoo Mojeed who lost his loving wife and daughter in quick succession under mysterious circumstances over his popular choice as the traditional ruler of his community. Curiously, whereas it is commonsensical for anybody enmeshed in the emerging travail to back out of the race, the 55 -year-old automobile engineer, turned traditional ruler of Osulaigbo ruling house extraction; who succeeded the late Raufu Dada, the Baale of Iseri-Osun, said there was no going back on his mandate. "We have been on this tussle for about four years now so to contemplate backing out is not only cowardly but will amount to misleading my people. And again, for the purpose of history and with due respect, the late Baale Raufu Dada did not come from any of the ruling houses in Iseri-Osun. He was appointed by the government of the time based on his popularity and influence. And in fairness, he kept telling anybody that cared to listen, that he was not from any of the ruling houses and of course he never received salary while in office till he died. Even when he died, the government did not give a dime to assist in his burial rites because they said he was not recognized. So, it was after his demise that my people chose me to succeed him and normalize the wrongs which the military administration caused in our land. Narrating his ordeal after he succeeded the late Baale to Crime Guard, Oba Mojeed who was visibly determined to actualize his cause said, "The whole problem started years back in the mid 90s even when the late Baale was alive and it was rumored that one particular Alhaji of Oke-Imoye extraction (names withheld) was moving round the community and beyond parading himself as the next traditional ruler of our community in the event of the demise of Oba Raufu. Initially, we taught it was a child’s play since the man in question is not an indegene of Iseri-Osun or Osulaigbo ruling class. Like I said, he is a son of Oke-Imoye community, a neighboring community to Iseri-Osun. But when we started noticing some unseriousness in his activities, the late Baale called a meeting of all the chiefs and traditional rulers in the land on the need to checkmate the impending sacrilege. It was then decided that a delegation be sent to the neighboring traditional rulers including the Oba of Igando land to ascertain if they were behind the man arrogating the title as the next Oba of Iseri-Osun to himself. As event s unfolded, we discovered to our shock that the man in question had even gone to the extent of surreptitiously gotten the approval of an Official Gazette of the state with number ISSN0189-0174 Vol.29, date March 4, 1996 to that effect even before the death of Baale Raufu. The fraudulent Official Gazette was obtained during the administration of Colonel Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Lagos state. The fraud in the Gazette was more revealing when it was discovered that none of the purported signatories duly signed against their names against the spaces provided. Surprised by this development, an emergency meeting of council of traditional rulers in the area was scheduled at the Alimosho local government office during which we all stated our cases as demanded by history. Of truth, Osulaigbo is the only ruling house in Iseri-Osun and had four children; and so if ascendancy to the throne of Oniseri of Iseri-Osun is to be based on rotational basis, then it should be rotated amongst his children and not between Osulaigbo and Koniba. The contentious Koniba ruling house that we are talking about does not exist in Iseri-Osun. It is just imaginary! The man going around parading himself as the Oba is a native of Oke-Imoye community and not even of the strange Koniba. Incidentally, Oke-Imoye and Iseri-Osun are just neighbors and that is incontrovertible. The two communities are geographically different and religiously incompatible. So how come a son from Oke-Imoye who by implication, is a stranger in Iseri-Osun community wants to lord himself over us, to the extent of dreaming of becoming an Oba? That is sacrilegious! And to further buttress our claims, the Koniba chieftaincy family of Oke Imoye in a letter of disclaimer addressed to the chairman of Ikotun-Igabdo LCD Chieftaincy committee dated 23rd September 2008 and signed by chiefs Musibau Giwa and Akibu Giwa clearly stated that the man parading himself as Oba Iseri-Osun claiming to be representing Koniba family is a descendant of Idaoguna, a family in Oke Imoye and not Koniba ruling house. Based on this and the fact that we are law abiding good people, we sought the interpretation of a court of competent jurisdiction. We took him to court in suit No. ID\1109\2004. Having carefully listened to our prayers and based on the prevailing facts on ground, Hon Justice O. H Oshodi of an Ikeja High court ruled in our favour. As it is normal, they appealed against the ruling and the determination of the out come of the Appeal is what we are still expecting." Continuing, Oba Mojeed said in the evolving scenario, he had escaped assassination at different occasions in addition to the mysterious death of his wife and daughter. "I have escaped the assassins’ bullets at different times. If they perceived that I had left my house either to Isolo or any other place for that matter, they would send assassins after me. The last assassination attempt on my life left two of my aides dead. The case took us to the SCID Panti. While the assassins were firing ceaselessly, I had to jump into the bush for safety. I called the police and my house from the bush. It took the efforts of eight policemen to rescue me from my hiding place. After that, in the early hours of December 17, 2005, I told my wife that I was traveling only to hear later that she slumped in the bathroom and died almost immediately. Her death caused pandemonium in the entire community because it was shocking to suddenly behold the death of a hail and healthy woman. Months after, her 13- year-old daughter woke up one morning, complained of head ache, and just before she could get any analgesic tablet she gave up the ghost. As if that was not enough, the unknown killers accosted my first son Kazeem and almost assassinated him also but for quick intervention of those in the area when the assassins struck. The case is presently at the SCID Panti too. But my happiness is that in all this travail, my people have never abandoned me, God has never abandoned me and that is why I have equally vowed that I will not let them down. We cannot live and watch a stranger rule over us, no way.!" http://nm.onlinenigeria.com/templates/?a=13853&z=12 |
419 Spiritualist Jailed 20 Years Posted To The Web: Sunday, October 19, 2008 - By Jamiu Yisa A fraudulent spiritualist and his accomplice have been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment with hard labour by Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of the Ikeja High Court. The accused, Akeem Opeewe and Olatunji Abolanle, were jailed by Justice Oyewole for obtaining money under false pretence. P.M.News gathered that the spiritualist and members of his gang, who made quick money through deceitful means of money doubling, were arrested and charged to court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). They were arraigned on a 10-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence and stealing. Nemesis caught up with them when an aggrieved complainant reported their fraudulent activities to the EFCC. Their first victim was a lady who was having trouble with her marriage as a result of her husband’s alleged extra marital affairs. P.M.News gathered that the lady consulted the spiritualist who assured her that her husband would return to her as soon as some sacrifices were performed. Coincidentally, her husband came back home and she was impressed with the potency of the herbalist’s power. Buoyed by this, she introduced the herbalist to her friends, among whom was a lady who needed spiritual assistance and quick money. The lady was made to believe that she could become instantly rich if she produces N500,000. Her friend assured her that he (the spiritualist) would use juju invocation and make the money reproduce itself everyday for 11 consecutive days. She had parted with N159,000 for several purposes, which include fees for sacrifice, spiritual bath, acceptance prayers by elders and sacrifice to three so-called witches allegedly invoked by the gang, before it dawned on her that she had been duped. On realising this, she reported the matter to the EFCC which arrested the fraudster and his accomplice. The accused were charged to court and they pleaded guilty to all the charges brought against them. Justice Oyewole had no option but to sentence them to 20 years imprisonment with hard labour. http://nm.onlinenigeria.com/templates/?a=13850&z=12 |

Why do citizens in 70 countries prefer Obama to McCain? KARIN ZEITVOGEL (AFP) and JACK CAFFERTY (CNN) https://nigeriaworld.com/images/news/big/international/us/politics/obama-international.jpg This billboard in Belgrade, Serbia states, ‘Change that we can believe in’ posted by a group called ‘Europe has no alternative’ and depicts an image of John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama. (PHOTO CREDIT: AP PHOTO) If the rest of the world could take part in the US presidential election, Democratic Party candidate Barack Obama would win four times more votes than his Republican rival John McCain, a poll showed Tuesday. In surveys conducted by the Gallup Organization in 70 countries representing nearly half the world's population, 30 percent of people said they would choose Obama as president of the United States against eight percent who said they preferred McCain. In four close US partners in Asia -- Australia, Japan, Singapore and South Korea -- residents came out clearly in favor of Obama. Two-thirds of Japanese and Australian respondents said they preferred Obama to McCain, who only scored about 15 percent in the two countries. In Singapore and South Korea, meanwhile, the pro-Obama vote outpaced the pro-McCain vote by around two to one. "McCain and Obama have each pledged to reinvigorate and strengthen partnerships with the four developed Asian countries and take a more active role in Asian regional organizations," Gallup wrote. Nine out of 10 people polled in India and Pakistan and seven in 10 in Bangladesh said they had no opinion about whom they would prefer to see in the White House in Washington come next January. Gallup said the disinterest among South Asians revealed "a great disconnect between many of the world's poorest inhabitants and the politics of the United States." Latin Americans showed a similar disconnect, with 68 percent of those polled in central America and Mexico and 58 percent in South America voicing no opinion about the US election. Middle Easterners in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories chose Obama over McCain by a margin of at least two to one, although three-quarters of Palestinians said they didn't think the result of the US election would change much in their country. A majority of Europeans in 14 countries said they wanted an Obama victory, with the Dutch and Norwegians the strongest Obama supporters in Europe: nearly three-quarters in both countries said they preferred him to McCain. In France, 64 percent chose Obama against four percent for McCain, and in Germany, where an Obama rally in Berlin gathered some 200,000 people in July, the Democratic presidential contender was supported by 62 percent of those polled compared with 10 percent for McCain. In Africa, a median of 56 percent of poll respondents chose Obama -- meaning the percentage who chose the African American presidential contender was higher than 56 percent in half the 22 countries polled and lower than 56 percent in the other half. A median of nine percent chose McCain, who did not beat Obama anywhere in Africa, even though the current US administration of Republican President George W. Bush has a high approval rating on the continent. Bush in July signed legislation tripling funds to fight the killer diseases of AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in Africa under an initiative launched under his administration in 2003. In Kenya, where Obama's father hailed from, the Democrat was supported by nearly nine in 10 poll respondents; McCain had the support of three percent of Kenyans. Around 1,000 people were interviewed face-to-face earlier this year in most of the countries that took part in the surveys. Survey sizes in Kuwait, Japan, Pakistan, Mexico and India were 484, 750, 804, 873 and 2,000 people respectively. Cafferty File: Question Senator John McCain says when it comes to foreign policy he’s light years ahead of Barack Obama. Over and over again, McCain has insisted Obama lacks the necessary experience to conduct business with foreign countries on behalf of the United States. So how do you explain this? Citizens of dozens of foreign countries prefer Barack Obama over John McCain as our next president by a margin of almost 4 to 1, according to a massive poll conducted by the Gallup Organization. About 30 percent of those surveyed prefer Obama, while just 8 percent favor McCain. This was no daily tracking poll either. Gallup polled people in 70 countries in Africa, Europe, Asia and North and South America, representing nearly half the world’s population, between May and September of this year. Citizens of the Philippines and Georgia were the only ones who preferred McCain to Obama. Not exactly the super-powers we’re looking to mend fences with. Here’s my question to you: Why do citizens in 70 foreign countries prefer Barack Obama to John McCain by a margin of nearly 4-1? Interested to know which ones made it on air? Justin from North Carolina writes: Barack Obama is the candidate of reason. Only a fool would think of supporting the ticket with the oldest presidential nominee and a woefully inept vice presidential candidate are in the best interest of America or the world especially when the current disaster of a president proves to be more coherent than the both of them. Kevin writes: They prefer him because he’s a patsy and they know he’s going to pander to them. Kennedy was on medication during meetings with Khrushchev and Khrushchev called him a pygmy. No fear whatsoever. Good thing Kennedy did stand up to him during the Cuban missile crisis. Obama needs some testosterone shots. Putin, Chavez, the Castro’s, the Girl Scouts of China…anybody could chew him up, push him around, and spit him out. F.S. from Rollinsford, N.H. writes: Jack, just to let you know that from my wife’s and my visit to Europe for 3 weeks just recently, we couldn’t find anyone in 4 countries that wanted McCain for President. They all think he is warmonger and that Palin is a joke. Do they know something we don’t? Jackie writes: To be fair, I think McCain’s negativity rests with the “R” after his name. He is a decent man who, because of his age and knowing this is his last chance, sold his soul to the Republican National Committee. Mike writes: It’s simple. It may sound racist, but it’s really not. Foreign countries are tired of old white men bossing them around and looking down on them. They finally see someone who will respect & approach them as equals. Zach writes: Let’s see, Jack…where to begin…They don’t want to get bombed? They want to work with a well-spoken, even-keel US. President for a change? They’re smarter than almost half of the people in our own country? Debbie, Illinois, writes Because they are smarter than us. Period!!! I can not believe the stupidity and the bigotry of the American people. Gosh Darn IT! http://nigeriaworld.com/news/source/2008/oct/22/1000.html |
India is wasting it's money on irrelevant stuff. They should face the famine and severe hunger torturing their citizens than space technology. They should remember the US economy is ailing and no more US IT jobs will be shipped there in the near future. |

Wednesday, October 22, 2008 I don't know the number of policemen in Nigeria - Okiro By Olusola Fabiyi, Ibanga Isine and Chukwudi Akasike The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, on Tuesday stunned senior police officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja when he said that as the number one police officer, he did not know the actual number of policemen in the country. Okiro, who met with the officers from the rank of commissioner of police and above over the rising crime wave in the country, said that all that he had was a mere estimate. He did not give the estimate but said that because of non-unavailability of correct data on all officers and men of the force, he had directed that new identity cards be obtained by all policemen before the end of December 2008. This, he said, would help eliminate ghost policemen. The IG said, "The ID card is designed to help us know the number of policemen in the Nigeria Police Force. I don't even know the actual number of policemen in the country. "All what I know is mere estimate and that is why we keep on talking about so, so and so number. There must be verification for all policemen and it is going to start by November 4. "All policemen must be physically present at the venue and no one should bring authority to collect ID card on behalf of any officer or rank and file. This would help us to know the exact number of policemen in the NPF." Okiro also stirred laughter among his subordinates when he said that even as the IG, he still uses the ID card of a Deputy Inspector-General of Police. He said the new ID card would also serve as ATM card for all policemen since it could be used by them to access their salaries. The IG said the era when dismissed policemen paraded themselves as policemen was over as the card was capable of rejecting them as soon as they slotted it into any ATM. He later met behind closed doors with the officers to strategise on ways to check the rising crime wave in the country, especially in the last quarter of the year. It was gathered that the police boss enjoined his men to be more vigilant as the year gradually runs to an end. He was also quoted as asking them to embark on stop-and-search operations. The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Mr. Parry Osanyande, had on October 15, 2008 told journalists in Benin, Edo State, that there were 377, 000 policemen in the country. If that figure is correct, it would mean there are about three policemen to one thousand Nigerians on the average. He added that out of the number, 100, 000 were involved in duties that were not part of their normal assignments as policemen. But on Tuesday, the PSC Spokesman, Mr. Ikechuchukwu Ani, told one of our correspondents that it would not be easy to get the actual number of policemen until the officials of the commission returned from their tour of police formations across the country. Ani said, "I would need to find out from the commission and you know that the chairman and other members of the commission are currently on tour of police formations. "As I speak with you, they are in Calabar (Cross River State), so you have to wait till Thursday when they would have probably returned." Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police command on Tuesday deployed its surveillance helicopter in search of two sisters - Chinonso and Uchechi Ajanaku - who were abducted by gunmen in Port Harcourt. Naval gunboats and police patrol boats were also deployed to search the creeks, while heavily armed troops, operatives from the State Security Service and the police patrolled the city as part of the efforts to track down the gunmen and rescue the children. Chinonso, 11; and Uchechi, nine, are children of one Mr. Ajanaku, who is said to be an official of the Shell Petroleum Development Company. It was learnt that a car conveying them to school was blocked by the gunmen along Odili Road, off Trans Amadi Road, at about 7.30 am by the hoodlums. After forcing the driver to stop, the bandits reportedly forced the door open and dragged the children to their waiting vehicle and sped off. When contacted, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bala Hassan said, "We have deployed our helicopter to provide air surveillance while all the entry and exit points to the city have been kept on close watch. "We are out to ensure that the kidnappers are apprehended and the two children rescued." Meanwhile, an expatriate employee of Julius Berger Plc, Mr. Guy Bartlett, who was kidnapped by gunmen in Akwa Ibom State about two weeks ago, was released to his family on Monday in Uyo. Ekiti: School feeding: Parents accuse govt of using charms From Toba Suleiman in Ado-Ekiti, 10.22.2008 Wednesday, October 22, 2008 Parents in Ekiti State yesterday accused the state government of using “juju cups, plates and spoons,” to feed their children and wards during school hours. The state government commenced the school feeding policy last year. The feeding programme, which started precisely May last year, where pupils and students in public primary and secondary schools are fed twice a week, with eggs and chocolate, was part of Governor Segun Oni’s campaign promises to the people of the state, if voted into power. Commissioner for Education and Technology, Mrs Abiola Ayimonche, described the allegation as “another Action Congress (AC) propaganda,” urging the people of the state to disregard it. She said, “that kind of talk is AC propaganda and the allegation is manufactured by the AC. This government wants to improve the nutrition of our children and when somebody does a laudable project like this, the person deserves commendation.” However, yesterday’s parents’ peaceful protest started during a Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) meeting at the Holy Trinity Primary School, Okesa, Ado-Ekiti, when angry parents alleged discovery of what they called “demonic incisions” on cups, plates and spoons being used to feed their children. Source disclosed that the meeting begun peacefully with the parents and teachers discussing about the progress of the school, neatness and personal hygiene of the students and other matters affecting the pupils and the school, until the issue was mentioned by a male parent. The trouble actually started when the parent narrated his experience before others started reacting, the source said. http://odili.net/news/source/2008/oct/22/214.html |

naijaking1:IBB raps Obasanjo over foreign reserves By Beifoh Osewele Tuesday, October 21, 2008 Former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida has faulted the decision of the immediate president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to amass the nation's wealth in foreign reserve. The retired General who was guest on an AIT talk show, Focus Nigeria believes that the whopping sum of 65 billion US Dollars presently lying idle in the foreign vault should have been channeled towards development of infrastructure in the country. Reacting to a question on the nation's huge foreign reserve against the backdrop of the current global economic meltdown, the Minna-born former military leader fondly called IBB says leaving such money out there when the nation was growing under the weight of decay in infrastructure did not make sound economic decision to him. 'We should have invested more on infrastructure,' he begins. 'If I had that kind of money, I would have spent it more properly.' He, however, excused Obasanjo's decision to keep the money in foreign reserve rather. 'It depends on the philosophy of government. 'If I had that kind of money, I'd have spent it; without having to put it somewhere and looking at the books.' On the safety of the nation's money, IBB says Nigerians have no reason to worry having been assured by the Professor Charles Soludo, governor of the apex bank, the CBN. 'I am happy the CBN has assured the ordinary people that the money is safe. I don't have to doubt him. I believe he's telling us the correct thing. If he says there's no threat, I'd be silly to doubt him.' The gap-toothed general denies that he frittered away the huge revenue totaling 12.5billion USDollars that accrued to the nation in the wake of the US-Iraqi war. He says contrary to accusation his administration did not squander any Gulf War windfall, arguing that because he envisaged that something like the accusation was going to come up, and he had prepared himself to answer the query whenever it came up. He insisted that there was no squandering noting that 'we documented everything.' Asked to assess the performance of Umar Yar'Adua, Babangida says ruling a country with 140 million people with diverse interests, religion and so on is not an easy task. 'You need to give anybody who comes into power enough time to study, analyse and implement his plan. That is what he's doing,' he says. Nigerians, he reasons, should give Yar'Adua time, offer constructive and meaningful suggestion to the government and make input into government policies. http://odili.net/news/source/2008/oct/21/503.html |

Tuesday, October 21, 2008 Workers in trouble for diverting N660m 'Adedibu diesel' By Sunday Aborisade, Ibadan Two civil servants in Oyo State who allegedly diverted diesel meant for the residence of the late chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, from the Oyo State Government transport pool, are now in trouble. https://odili.net/news/source/2008/oct/21/punch/images/pix20071116057195.jpg The late Chief Lamidi Adedibu They are accused in a petition to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission by Mr. Idowu Olanrewaju, to have allegedly perpetrated the fraud, which the petitioner put at about N660m during the 11- month tenure of Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala. Specifically, the petitioner named the state Principal Transport Officer (Technical), Mr. James Opalola, and a driver attached to the state Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Mr. Moradeyo Kayode, alias 'Salake' as the alleged perpetrators. They were said to be claiming 600 litres of diesel at the rate of about N130 per litre, for onward delivery to Adedibu's house everyday, including weekends, to power his giant generating sets. The deal allegedly terminated when former Governor Rashidi Ladoja was reinstated but resumed in earnest immediately Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala emerged as governor on May 29, 2007. The petitioners noted that despite Adedibu's death on June 11, the 'shady deal' continued until September 25, 2008 when Kayode was allegedly arrested at Oje market in Ibadan by officials of the Pipeline Vandalisation Task Force. Some workers at the pool, who were dissatisfied with the development, allegedly wrote a petition to the state government over the issue and a probe panel was set up to investigate the scandal. The petition further alleged that the perpetrators of the deal were still working freely at the state secretariat, obviously living above their income. The petitioner, who also sent a copy to the Chairman, House of Assembly Committee on Anti-Corruption, Accountability and Due Process, urged the anti-graft bodies to investigate the matter and bring the culprits to book. The petitioners specifically alleged that the state government was trying to cover up the matter because Opalola is an indigene of Ogbomoso, the hometown of Governor Alao-Akala. When contacted on the matter, Opatola said he could not speak with journalists and directed our correspondent to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security and Protocol, Mrs. Comfort Alebiosu, a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police. Alebiosu, in turn, said she was also not competent to react to such a sensitive issue and pleaded with our correspondent to get official reaction from the state governor. http://odili.net/news/source/2008/oct/21/414.html |
Police smash fake airline tickets issuing syndicate Written by Kenneth Ehigiator & Gabriel Abatan Tuesday, October 21, 2008 MEN of Murtala Mohammed Airport Command of the Police have smashed a syndicate that specialises in issuing fake foreign and domestic airlines tickets to unsuspecting travellers. They also arrested a syndicate of three which arrange fake travelling documents for their victims to embark on international trips. Vanguard gathered that the syndicate, whose members work in collaboration with some Afriqiyah Airways’, had already issued seven fake Afriqiyah’s to London from Lagos, and another two to Germany from Lagos via Tripoli, before it was smahed. Commissioner of police in charge of the command, Argungu Hashimu, who confirmed the report, also said three persons, including Daniel Emecho, Raphel Anorie and Stan Alonge were also arrested at the domestic wing of the airport for issuing fake Arik Air tickets and boarding passes to unsuspecting passengers. According to him, Alonge, who is a ground staff of the airline is the one who secures the ticket and hand them over to his accomplices to issue to passengers. The commissioner paraded three suspects who presented themselves as travel agents to dupe three travellers to the tune of N1.33 million. The suspects, he said, swindled Isiaka Afolabi, Tolu Tejuosho and Gbenga Tejuosho of N996,000 and N335,500 by securing for them fake travel documents procured from Oluwole on Lagos Island. According to him, the fake documents were to enable them travel to London and Georgia, USA. respectively. He said the fraudsters, including Adetokunbo Adegbada and Rotimi Onyerongbe, also issued their victims fake $1,600 as basic travel allowance. Hashimu also told Vanguard that one Bashiru Bala was arrested at the car park of the Lagos international airport for operating illegal Bureau De Change, adding that the suspect was picked up with N489,000 and $890 respectively. He said all the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations into their cases were concluded. The command only a week ago smashed a kidnapping syndicate and robbery gang operating at the airport. http://odili.net/news/source/2008/oct/21/300.html |
Obama: Fox, YouTube link Powell’s backing to THISDAY Festival By Paul Ohia with agency report, 10.21.2008 Tuesday, October 21, 2008 Sunday’s endorsement of Senator Barack Obama for US presidency by Gen. Colin Powell has been linked to THISDAY Africa Rising Music and Fashion Festival held in London, UK, last week. https://odili.net/news/source/2008/oct/18/punch/images/pix200810181241362.jpg File Olu (Left) and Powell (Center American TV station, Fox News, which leans towards the Republican Party and is pro-John McCain in the presidential race, had suggested that Powell’s participation at the London event prepared his mind towards his sudden declaration of support for Democratic Party’s candidate, Obama. Bloggers and commentators also saw a connection between the endorsement of Obama by the former Secretary of State, Powell, and the festival which drew a capacity audience at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall. Comments published under CNN/YouTube/TYT analyses of the London event as relayed by Fox News yesterday saw some bloggers praising the retired general, while others said he betrayed a cause he believed in. Fox News connected Africa Rising to the Obama endorsement and asked for viewers’ comments on YouTube in a controversial online debate fired up by the caption: “Colin Powell dances to hip-hop… does it mean that he is voting for Obama?” Fox News had also made a speculative analysis earlier stating: “Colin Powell has his dancing shoes on, fueling speculation that he's gearing up to do the Obama Two-Step.” According to the new channel, “the normally staid former US Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff performed an impromptu hip-hop dance alongside well-known rap stars Tuesday following a speech at a festival in London celebrating African-American music and fashion. “His address at the ‘Africa Rising’ celebration inside London's Royal Albert Hall fueled speculation that an endorsement of Barack Obama is imminent.” The presenters also triggered viewers’ responses by stating that by attending the Africa Rising event and subsequently endorsing Obama, Powell want the Democratic candidate to make Africa rise. One suggested jokingly that because he was dancing with African people therefore he wanted the continent to rise. “Does Condoleeza Rice not see Africa rise?” one presenter asked rhetorically while the other pointed out that Powell did not speak about Obama at the ceremony but conducted himself like a statesman. But the responses dwelt much on the racial implication of the endorsement with most of the writers trading words and wondering if the Powell’s decision has to do with his being an African American. “I can’t believe the racism that is going on right now, we have always had white males as presidents why isn’t that being called racist? Why isn’t it racist that Colin Powell is the first black general, that means before him there were none…,” a commentator who uses the ID “mrmarkies” stated. In his own contribution, another writer who uses the ID “courageous” wrote: “Well just look at it like this. For once 98 per cent of blacks are on the same page for the right reason, change. Here's an argument. We Americans have always voted for white men. What's the logic in that?” Asked last week at the THISDAY Festival to pick between McCain and Obama in the race for the White House, Powell had refused to disclose his choice. “I am close to both of them,” he had said. “I have known McCain for 25 years. We fought in the Vietnam War together. We’re both in the Republican Party. I have not known Obama for that long, though. But I have told McCain, I won’t support you simply because I’ve known you for so long. I told Obama, I won’t endorse you simply because you’re black. It would be a negation of my belief that we should all be judged by merit.” But Powell, on Sunday, endorsed Obama's White House bid, in a stinging rebuff to Republican candidate John McCain. He expressed deep disquiet over the rightward shift the Republican Party has taken under McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin – who he said was not ready to be president. The Republican, on NBC programme "Meet the Press", said Obama had "met the standard" to lead "because of his ability to inspire, because of the inclusive nature of his campaign, because he is reaching out all across America." "I think he would be a transformational president. For that reason I will be voting for Senator Barack Obama," said Powell, who was the first African American to occupy the top US military post. Should the mixed-race Obama win on November 4, "all Americans should be proud, not just African Americans," he added. "It would not just electrify our country, it would electrify the world." Powell said both Obama and his old friend McCain were ready to be president. "But I strongly believe that at this point in American history we need a president, who will not just continue basically the policies we have been following in the recent years," he said. "I think we need a transformational figure, I think we need a generational change. That is why I'm supporting Senator Obama." Speaking on Fox News, McCain said he had "always admired and respected General Powell." "We're long-time friends. This doesn't come as a surprise," the Arizona senator said, while touting his endorsement by other former secretaries of state including Henry Kissinger, James Baker and Lawrence Eagleburger. Powell again defended his role in the buildup to the Iraq invasion, insisting that he acted in good faith on the basis of intelligence evidence that, he felt, showed Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. He denied he was keen on returning to government in an Obama administration to help repair his political reputation. Powell said he would have to be ready to serve if asked, "but I am in no way anxious to rule it in." He had harsh words about the tone of McCain's campaign and rising Islamophobia in Republican circles as smears purport to portray Obama as a secret Muslim. "I have said to Mr McCain that I admire all he has done. I have some concerns about the direction the party has taken in recent years. It has moved more to the right than I would like to see it," he said. McCain had gone "too far" with a negative advertising barrage over Obama's ties to former 1960s radical William Ayers, Powell said. http://odili.net/news/source/2008/oct/21/209.html |
