I don't know why people are saying fuel will sell for 141 naira, it will sell now based on a slight difference from the cost price of importing fuel into the country.

Politics › Re: Breaking News: GEJ Declares State of Emergency in selected LGAs in Borno, Yobe, Niger and Plateau. by Pharoh: 5:11pm On Dec 31, 2011
The Nigerian presidency has just issued a proclamation declaring a state of emergency in certain parts on Nigerian as follows:

Fellow Nigerians, it has become necessary to address you on recent events in some parts of the country that have threatened our collective security and shaken the foundations of our corporate existence as a nation.

2.    You are all aware of the security challenges which the activities of the Boko Haram sect have foisted on the country. What began as sectarian crises in the North Eastern parts of the country has gradually evolved into terrorist activities in different parts of the country with attendant negative consequences on our national security.

3.      Government in an effort to find a lasting solution to the security threats occasioned by the activities of the Boko Haram sect, constituted a Presidential Committee under the Chairmanship of Ambassador Usman Gaji Galtimari, to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the crises. While efforts are being made to implement the recommendations of the Committee, the crises have assumed a terrorist dimension with vital institutions of government including the United Nations Building and places of worship becoming targets of terrorist attacks.

4.   While the search for lasting solutions is ongoing, it has become imperative to take some decisive measures necessary to restore normalcy in the country especially within the affected communities. Consequently, I have in the exercise of the powers conferred on me by the provisions of section 305(1) of the Constitution, declared a state of emergency in the following parts of the federation, namely:

(i)  Borno State

a)  Maidugiri Metropolitan LGA

b)  Gamboru Ngala LGA

c)   Banki Bama LGA

d)  Biu LGA

e)   Jere LGA

(ii)  Yobe State

a)  Damaturu LGA

b)  Geidam LGA

c)   Potiskum LGA

d)  Buniyadi-Gujba LGA

e)   Gasua-Bade LGA

   (iii) Plateau State

a)  Jos North LGA

b)  Jos South LGA

c)   Barkin-Ladi LGA

d)  Riyom LGA

  (iv) Niger State

a)  Suleja LGA

The details of this proclamation will be transmitted to the National Assembly as soon as they reconvene from their current recess, for their necessary action.

5.    The Chief of Defence Staff and the Inspector-General of Police have been directed to put appropriate measures in place to ensure the protection of lives and properties of residents in the affected parts of the country. I therefore urge the political leadership in the affected states and Local Government Areas to give maximum cooperation to the law enforcement agencies deployed to their respective communities to ensure that the situation is brought under control within the shortest possible time.

6.   The Chief of Defence Staff, in collaboration with other Service Chiefs, has also been directed to set up a special force unit within the Armed Forces, with dedicated counter terrorism responsibilities.

7.   As part of the overall strategy to overcome the current security challenges, I have directed the closure of the land borders contiguous to the affected Local Government Areas so as to control incidences of cross boarder terrorist activities as terrorists have taken advantage of the present situation to strike at targets in Nigeria and retreat beyond the reach of our law enforcement personnel.

8.  Let me assure our neighbours, especially within the ECOWAS sub-region, of Nigeria’s commitment to its international obligations as provided by the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons. The temporary closure of our borders in the affected areas is only an interim measure designed to address the current security challenges and will be reviewed as soon as normalcy is restored.

9.   I commend the efforts of our political leaders at various levels as well as our traditional and religious leaders for their support for the various conflict resolution mechanisms and peace building measures that have been initiated by this administration. We call on the citizenry to continue to provide useful information to our law enforcement agencies to enable us arrest the situation.

10. Terrorism is a war against all of us. I call on all Nigerians to join hands with government to fight these terrorists.

11. I wish all Nigerians a very happy New Year.

12.   Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Artists document Oko Baba as Lagos goes mega
Tuesday, March 18, 2008 - The Guardian
WHENEVER posterity finds its past missing in the archive, historians are usually held responsible.

To enrich the archive for tomorrow's sake, a research team of artists, have come up with an initiative in support of the ongoing urban renewal project of the Lagos State government.

Unavoidably, redevelopment in most urban cities across the world comes with loss of some identities while new ones are ushered in. Also, whenever the proposed mega city project of the government in power comes to fruition, the history of Lagos has to be re-written, as more structures would have to give way to this urban renewal.

Such loss of physical identities as experienced in the past with the shanty settlements of Maroko, Victoria Island and Ilubinrin, Ikoyi, both in Lagos were most likely not properly documented before the bulldozers rolled over them. It will be recalled that Maroko was leveled under the administration of the then military Governor of Lagos State, Colonel Raji Rasaki. In place of the demolished structures is a choice estate.

To avoid such loss of history, the artists, 27 in number, took off with what is expected to be a series under the theme, Documenting Eko. The first of the series, Documenting Eko-1, Oko Baba, a group art exhibition of works of the artists from their research on extinction-bound timber land, Oko Baba, in Ebute Metta is scheduled to open at the Terra Kulture, Victoria Island, on Sunday, March 23 through 30, 2008. The works, during a preview revealed that the show is an opportunity for people to see the other side of habitation that is so uniquely cut off from the urban structure, yet a major feeder to the constructions of high rise buildings on the islands and the city in general.

Among the exhibiting artists are Rukeme Noserime, Kolade Oshinowo, Raqib Bashoroun, Emma Idiong, Adeola Balogun, Grace Soyinka, Odun Orimolade, Kema Mordi, Shade Thompson Aladegbongbe Aderinsonye, Toni Ogunde, Sheba Onabanjo and Mary Onote Kasim.

Oko Baba, a sub settlement of Lagos Mainland local government council is a very well known timber industrial area that takes a chunk of the coastline stretching close to Iddo, near Lagos Island. Having existed for over 50 years without recognition by successive government of the state, the Lagos State government under the immediate past governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu started the negotiation to relocate the 'industrial estate' to a new site in Agbowa, Badagry local government council. Set to execute the outcome of that negotiation is the new administration of Lagos State under Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola.

It would amount to a disservice to posterity if the bulldozers roll over the place without proper documentation in the art gallery, the artists explained. The show, which is expected to be of benefit to a cross section of professionals, mostly those in the creative business, including architects and others, have a multi purpose value for technocrats and policy makers in the business of urban development. The coordinator of the exhibition, Rukeme Noserime, during the preview at Terra Kulture, the exhibition is to compliment the project of the state government in relocating the people.

In their diverse medium such as oil, wood, ceramic photography and textile, various activities inside the timber land from which multi purpose use of wood are derived make the artists' expressions. From Oshinowo's representational piece, Man Alone, oil and acrylic on canvas, Bashorun's Shield, wood; to the clay and rubber works of Kema Mordi, Thompson's dress work Couture Kaftan and Jewellery, Orimolade's mixed media, What If, and Soyinka's ceramic works, posterity has a thumb up for these historians.

Bashorun's Shield, a semblance of Victorian art piece may not be able to stop the bulldozers from rolling over the timber land very soon, but this work is a tribute to the natural colours of wood. Between seven to10 the artist used colours of such gift of nature to mankind as each colour further offer different shades to demonstrate that nature couldn't have been so kind to man.

Oshinowo's brush strokes must have come at the right time to save another loss of history in what looked like a mountain of wood off-cuts, waiting for another round of recycling. Even as a heap, those natural colours of woods could not escape that bold stroke Oshinowo is known for.

In addition to the artists' social responsibility, this project also meant a lot to the creative sector, given the significant place of wood in the art gallery.

This much, the curator of the show, Balogun explained noting that artists, framers and every other persons who have something to do with art gallery should show concern for the future of the timber people.

For Orimolade, her mixed media, What If, , suggested a disastrous occurrence in case of a fire outbreak. "What if there is a fire. Just as in other communities that cooking is done; machines are in use, electricity and so forth. The recent news of fire then gives credence to these fears and brings up the need to evaluate the possible effects of an outburst of fire in such an environment."

Fears like this and others that may inhibit adequate development of the people in their new location are part of the concerns of the artists. The artists who are teachers from the Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos State did not stop at using the gallery as a major outlet to justify the responsibility society expects of them. They have taken upon themselves the role of activists to ensure that the new timberland, Agbowa, meets the required standard.

They had a presentation for the Lagos State government on the future of the timber workers, who, perhaps, have known no other jobs in their lives, but wood.

Factors crucial to this redevelopment, Noserime, Head of Department, Fine Art, Yabatech said are being addressed. The sudden culture shock for a people that have lived and worked in a place for over 50 years could be easily corrected only if the new abode, Agbowa, Badagry, as promised by the state government meets the standard required of modern timber industries, Rukeme warned.

This much, he said is part of the concerns of the research group as presented to the state government: "At Oko Baba, wood does not have a waste product. This is the whole essence of this research documentation. It is also to highlight the effective role of the government in trying to enhance the whole timber market phenomena in respect to current global trends. This is a very laudable and bold attempt by the Lagos State government."

In her ceramic works, Soyinka revisited motherhood from the point of view of Oko Baba and concluded that motherhood remains the same anywhere. "In the city or the village settlement of Oko-Baba, motherhood is a creative challenge. No matter where a mother is located, household hi-tech gadgets are not what make a good mother. Basic household equipment and strength of character is what make good mothering strength to identify what is good and right; strength to encourage, strength of today for tomorrow. Strength to keep on when others long to quit motherhood calls for strength."

The team's presentation to government, Noserime added included findings on the health implication for the timber workers as a result of constant exposure to woods, a Lagos State owned cyber caf among others.

I am very sad because i lived most of my life in ebute metta and i do know that place very well. That is where we all get our wood for different purposes and truly speaking a little fire will ignite the whole place just as someone already explained.  sad

The government should speed up the process of relocating them to a safer and conducive place, my condolence to the dead people and the child in that picture. The bridge should be checked immediately because i don't think it is safe for cars to pass through it anymore without adequate repairs.

Yeah sure not about me but in this same thread i have been accused of selective bashing and multiple ID syndrome to cure my fathom proposed problem. cheesy

There is nothing wrong with criticizing others. If they feel bad about it. . .it is not your place to complain for them. Unless you are using another handle to take care of YOUR PROBLEM!
Never said it was wrong but it should be done by the right person, at the right time and circumstance. This is clearly not the situation hence my contribution to this thread. I am not complaining for them but highlighting and helping the management of this site in things they should look into to make this environment a better place for everyone without all these destructive actions.

I do not have any problem and neither am using multiple ID's to cure any problem, this is me or can we say the three people who called him out are one and the same person?.

Lasinoh:
I have just highlighted two paradoxical areas in your write up there. It only shows you choose to practice selective bashing on NL. Attacking while making general posts on NL is ok with you then? wink But not while addressed to an individual in a thread? wink Well dariling 'Einstein', PEOPLE MAKE THE POSTS TOO WHEN THEY 'GIVE COMMENTS'. . . or are they donkeys and totoises? grin So, what difference does it make if you are in a group or alone when the 'bashing' takes place?

Read his thread again. There is nothing absolutely offensive about it. He did not attack anyone. He only gave a subjective analysis of the NL elections. He did not bash anyone. What he wrote are EMPIRICAL FACTS! Now, I don't like Eko Ile and her theatrics around NL. . . but I will always be fair in my approach and opinion in dealing with NLanders or people in and out of the www. Read again and learn a thing or two. You might just benefit from it! kiss
It would be a good excercise if you can point where i have bashed anyone or thing here on nairaland cool. I am willingly to accept my mistakes and make corrections going to the new year. Attacking while making general posts is never okay with me and that is why we have a report to moderator button. The thing there is that you cannot guage peoples comments or how they react to other peoples comment. That is different from someone just waking up and deciding to make a thread such as this. It seems you are getting me wrong, i am against any form of attacking, both to individuals and groups when making comments. The moderators are there to regulate such actions. This is about someone creating a thread and the theme of the thread is to criticize other members.

With all due respect there is absolutely and not even an atom of any form of knowledge or thing to learn ( personally ) from the post made by the original poster. People know me and i say it the way i feel no matter what the consequences might be. You rightly said nairaland elections and to our surprise he was only reflecting on the election that partains to the politics section only. So are we waiting for his reflection about the other sections as well? grin. Even if we are to restrict it to the politics section, there was three elections and he only reflected on two because he wanted to attack the people he mentioned up there. There was no reflection on the hall of fame where tinubu came last. So what can we say about him that does not allow us to even glance though one page on this section without hearing about tinubu this and that. This same tinubu was not able to win the hall of fame so that tells us that he has been campaigning for the wrong personality then?. undecided

He goes further to attack beaf because Gej was inducted into the hall of shame but we all know that beaf is not the only one that supports goodluck. Why is he not attacking the others?, even a new member that spends just three days in the politics section knows that eko ile can never say anything good about GEJ, beaf or the igbos. This was an avenue to just bash beaf and no reflection like he is making it to look like. Now he goes on to attack onlytruth for the same reason that they do not get along and because he is igbo. He has never said anything good about the igbos and this is like telling an arab to reflect about the nation os isreal. Do you expect anything positive to come out of that? and we all know that he is not going to say anything negative about gbawe or katsumoto. Katsumoto came last in that election and surprisingly he even has nothing to say about him or he was blind to that fact too?.

This was clearly no damn reflection but just an avenue to attack those he is not getting along with because there would not have been any relflection if only truth and GEJ came out positively during this elections. We are waiting for the reflection of the other sections and lets see what he has to say about those. grin

I am really surprised and shocked about this, even before the moderators act on it but why should someone come out and make such a thread in the first place?.

Lasinoh:
Mu he he he he
Na today attacking other members scale through 'moderator' and 'supa-dupa-moderator' tri-focals. . .SELECTIVELY? cheesy
I am not really talking about the attacking that goes on when they give comments, i can start attacking Ejine and we can resort to tribal bashing for example but starting a thread to attack others is very strange to me.
