Politics › Re: Nigeria’s Domestic Debt Too High — Obi by PHIPEX(m): 10:02pm On Dec 18, 2011
ak47mann:
The Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has said Nigeria could collapse as a result of the huge domestic debt that government is progressively accumulating.

Obi, who spoke while hosting the National Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Awka on Saturday, is the honorary Special Adviser on Finance to President Goodluck Jonathan.

Although he did not give an idea of how much the domestic debt is, Obi said the situation was alarming.

Nigeria is said to owe an external debt of about $40bn.

He said, "The level of domestic debt is high. Domestic debt is more dangerous than external debt. You owe your own people and they see you every day. That means they can take their frustrations on you."

Obi, who boasted that his government had been able to run for five years without taking a loan, warned against the tendency of borrowing money and raising of bonds to support budgets by some state governors.

He said, "Each time they issue bonds to support a budget, they are starting a crisis. You cannot borrow money to fund consumption. Where are they going to raise the money to pay back the loan?

"When you increase the cost of governance, you increase the size of greed. When you raise the cost of governance, people in government will become lazy because they are looking at money, not service. When the money is not there they won’t be able to work."

He recalled how he had to borrow five bullet-proof cars from Delta State free of charge when the President visited Anambra State recently to save the state the millions of naira that it would have cost to buy the cars.

Also speaking at the event, the President of the NUJ, Mr. Mohammed Garba, urged the governor to help build a befitting press centre for journalists in the state, while the Vice-President, South East, Mr. Ambrose Nwachukwu, asked the governor to prevail on his colleagues in the zone to improve on the conditions of service of journalists in their employ.

Kobojunkie:
@Poster, I have never taken bribe, and I have never given a bribe. But sometimes I wonder if I had been wrong in not conforming to what had become the norm in the country then.
What if I had paid tthat Naira 12,000 when the lecturer asked me to pay up if I wanted to to mark my papers . . . Maybe I would have been a medical doctor today. And maybe I would have gotten over having to bribe someone to mark my own papers and give me my own scores(not even pad my scores oo). But, I believe I did a good thing to stand firm on my principles . . . even though at the end of the day, I was told I would have to go back to first year medical school(year one from year three) as a result of my 'stinginess'. Honestly, I still battle the what-ifs to this day.
Its a painful one indeed but am sure there must hv been a certain conviction u had then that made you reject it, Surely time will prove u right. Am currently facing a similar situation bt I'v chosen not to yield even if I gain nothing else bt my Conscience.

This is a tricky question, depending on the situation and what you term as "bribe", we all have given at one point in time. Lobbyist give "perks" etc, it's the motive that counts. I haven't given one per se, so NO I don't give or accept but I have given gifts for someone to expedite something for me, lol smiley smiley smiley
I stated what I termed a bribes in the OP; A bribe for general knowledge here is to persuade somebody with enticement: to give somebody money or some other incentive to do something, especially something illegal or dishonest.

Of course appreciating someone for being a help to you may not be a bribe but conditioning such a help on the reciept of a gift should be termed a bribe. This is just my opinion.

Whenever I come across the issue of corruption in the country, my mind's first point of call is usually THE GOVERNMENT. But a report I once came across says that our Private sector is even more corrupt than the public sector (govt). I would have argued against it but considering the society we find ourselves where you are easily told to do it cos "every one else does it" or when it seem you want to go against the popular norm, you hear things like "This is Nigeria", am thus tempted to agree with the report.
A bribe for general knowledge here is to persuade somebody with enticement: to give somebody money or some other incentive to do something, especially something illegal or dishonest.
This means that it could include things like "runs", kickback, financial lobbyings etc

Lets answer sincerey since we have an anonymous Identity.

I'v critically analysed Okija-Juju's arguement and am baffled that a human being can hv this kind of hatred for a people, I can bet that if u hv ur way, u would hv incited another round of ethnic cleansing. With your level of hatred being a human, I wonder the level Satan himself will hv for his enemies. I can see that ur well educated but truely ur not learned in this matter.

Yes it will be investigated, a 7man panel of enquiry will be set, their report will be submitted after 3 months and that will be the end of it until another one occurs months after. You will be surprised that those who should take responsibilty for sefety in our waterways are even thanking God that its "just 40 people". We'v lost dignity for human lives, maybe its the consequence of over population afterall sometimes scarcity creates value. May their souls RIP!

The "smartness" of those few confused persons behind that rock at Abuja is indeed great, they want to kill two birds with one stone by Taking away that prestigous name and pretend to have recognised and immortalised the "Rejected stone"; what a conspiracy! What stops them from naming a national monument in Abuja after him or better still since the police headquarters was named after a former senior officer why not name the Defence headquaters after one of its finest officers?

If they are not ready to give Ikemba the respect he deserves let them leave the Eastern Govts to bury their dead cos am sure they will not disappoint us. HYPOCRITES

With all sincerity, If u were the president and you desire to get a direct response from the citizens what will you do?

I believe the president need not read all the mails to get a feeling of our yearnings, he may simply sample opinions from the mails. He is also not under any obligation to heed to all suggestions, afterall the divergence of opinions on every issue raised on NL is a good example of what such mails will represent. If you ask me, I don't think he has taken a bad step.

What if Jubril Aminu never made that statement? What if Jubril Aminu is a bigot? What if those of you quick to condemn Muslims are just as hypocritical as the ones which you insult? From some of the statements Ive read on this post theres an alarmingly, and scarily, high rate of ignorant people and bigots on this forum. You insult Muslims, but the damage the Christian world has done to this planet cannot matched by even the worst of Muslim extremist--- and thats a freaking fact.

You doubt me? You're in Africa, look at your surroundings! Now, do you get the picture?

Condemning Jubril Aminu is one thing but to now turn around and cast aspersions where they do not belong is, quite frankly, ignorant.
My answer to your questions are; what if Jonathan is not our president, what if Gaddafi and Ojukwu are still alive? or Have u met any of them one on one? Am sure we have the right to believe media reports untill they are refuted.

When the few educated Northerners speak like this, what then shall the Boko Mallams say, the statement sounds like the "conditionalities" of Boko Haram. The situation is really more pathetic than I thought, who shall deliver these Northerners from the hands of their wretched elites?

"Nigerians like to move around too much. Now if you dont have somewhere important to go to, you'll stay at home" - Olusegun Obasanjo responding to the fuel price increase.
Sike:
Everyone knows this is harsh but, If a Nigerian could spent so much to study abroad, why wouldn't they do same in their homeland.
I find it difficult to select my dumbest quote from the two above.

for those who saai that University education is not for all, I agree but will you willing prevent your own child from gaining it?
If your answer to the above is yes, then may God make it so, but if its no, then check well cos u might be a hypocrite.

Thought Nigerians understand the importance of Human capital development. How can someone in his right senses ask where all the graduates will be employed, How many graduates has Nigeria produced or what is the percentage of our graduates to the entire population. I agree that there should be an increase in tuition fee but not to the amount in question. Americans can afford to pay more for higher Education because they can afford it but nigerians may not.

Christianity Etc › Re: Evangelism In Public Buses Is Madness by PHIPEX(m): 11:02pm On Nov 19, 2011
I hope to be careful here because as  Christians we must ensure that Christ is preached which is our primary responsibility but we must consider others in caring out our responsibility. As it stands now there is no law that says one should not preach and untill such laws are enacted whoever preaches BREAKS NO LAW. But

Ro 14:16 Let not then your good be evil spoken of: (probably because)
1Co 10:23 ¶ All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

Let us not forget that there are several ways we can pass across the THE SAVING TRUTH without causing and unnecessary problems, one of such is Tracks and a forum like this where ur freedom of expression is more guarranteed.
If we all are offended by Boko men that said we MUST all become Moslems, I believe we must not Force our believe on other cos Christ told us that
Lu 6:31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. As someone said earlier, can you imagine goin to a hospital and shouting one your voice for the patients to repent because they are about to die?

To all who care to listen, Remember that if u prefare ur quiet silence to message of salvation now, a time shall come when you will  here the statement below;
Luke 16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

My discovery today made me surprised beyond measure. I was at Okota/Ago junction (in Lagos) when I heard the usual moslems' call to prayer. Surprisingly, the sound was coming from a 2 storey building housing a shop on the ground floor, a mosque on the first floor and a popular Penticostal church on the 2nd floor. I believe this sort of Peaceful coexistence is highly commendable especially in a country like ours.

Does this show then that the constant religious riots in the north is more of political than Religious?

One gud thing I can take from this is that they all invested in Nigeria, which should be a puzzle to our politicians like Ibori who think they will make the list by hidding our money in Swiss.

For those who are asking of Igbo Billonaires, Does a tree make a forest? If the tallest tree in the world is found in the Desert does it convert it to a forest?
Ask Economists and they will tell u that income inequality is one of the greatest challenge of Africa, where one person has Billions and 100 other persons can not earn a dollar a day. A situation where one individual in a village is a Billonaire while every other person around him is in penury. Am sure that can not be said of the Igbos.
