I beg... change d constitution not politicians. This is just an excuse. You have probably made up your mind to hate him. Obi is not a magician but wanting another 4years of APC is just unbelievable. If the US was experiencing the level of hardship Nigerians suffered under this APC Govt, the govt in power will never smell the seat in the next election. Only in Nigeria people want to give the same APC a second chance. I will rather Atiku the thief win than Tinubu the thief.. |

tshtsh: Student visa is not equal to japa. I keep telling anyone who cares to listen. If a person wants to japa they need to make a solid plan and follow through their plan. For the UK if one is unable to meet the academic and financial obligation, they can get withdrawn with their visa curtailed hence mandating them to leave the country. Again if they complete their studies but do not receive clearance from the university, they will not be able to apply for the post study visa. In addition if they are unable to secure a job+workvisa sponsor after the post study visa they'll need to study again or leave the country. While working, they'll need to maintain some work status for 5 years to qualify for permanent resident visa. There are many IFs in this journey and always a good idea to keep as many options open. How many years does the post study visa last and how may years for the job+work visa? |

freeman67: Before I would have just ask you to read the beginning of this thread and the other thread for mutual fund for better understanding but lots of pages have piled up so it won't be easy.
1. As an intending investor, yours is to look at Treasury Bills as a short term government debt. Meaning government borrowing money from you that is willing to invest now for certain reasons and at the end of the day pay you a certain percentage for that money borrowed. Though it is through the banks and other financial houses that the money is collected, the borrower, end user or benefactor is government.
While you should look at Stanbic IBTC mutual funds on the other hand as the asset management arm of Stanbic IBTC collecting/ pooling money from you and other investors to invest in different classes/types of asset (depending on the mutual fund) on your behalf.
2. They don't usually have the same rate. TB Rates are usually guided by the CBN MPR. While mutual fund rates is dependent on the underlying asset class of the particular mutual fund.
3a.For treasury there is primary market auction which is scheduled for every 2 weeks (Here you have 90, 180 and 365 days tenure). The auction day of the week is mostly Wednesdays so you can just go to the bank on Monday of the auction week to put you request.
There is also secondary market auction which could happen every week day depending on the bank and availability of TB disposed to be auctioned. Here the tenure you get is the tenure available. It could be 356, 10, 27, 18, 99 or 63 days etc. Any tenure less than 364 could be available. It also limited to particular time frame. Eg The last I know of Stanbic is from 10 am - 1 pm.
b. For mutual funds you can invest anyday, anytime. It is not particularly tenured per day. You could deposit and withdraw at will. Thank you. |

Politics › Re: Petrol Imports Gulp ₦17 Trillion, Refineries Stay Dormant by Phraences: 6:37pm On Nov 13, 2022 |
Kobonaire234: The reason why the subsidy is not gone (and it has been there since 1973) is not because of 'The North'...and the North does not benefit directly from subsidy.
The reason is simple. If subsidy went by September 2022, the price of fuel will go up to N492 per liter. Maybe as high as N500 per liter. That would mean higher prices from most small and medium scale enterprisies and businesses...and higher transport costs...which mean, in the interim, higher food prices.
That is politically expensive. It has nothing to do with the North, and everything to do with Nigerians not being willing to pay higher prices for fuel or for food, and a host of other things.
The marketers, and importers, and NNPC won't be directly affected...infact they would have enough profit to ensure fuel would flow easily.
No Nigerian leader up till today wants to remove subsidy. Even the three main candidates are talking about removing subsidy, but won't be willing because it would spark riots nationwide...that would make ENDSARS look like child's play.
I have talked about removing subsidy on this site for a long time. Guess who are the people that abuse and curse and shout and call me oppressor....they are mainly Southerners.
Smuggling even is not just a Northern acitivity...it is also done by big Southern businessmen, and by hundreds, if not millions of Northern and Southern young people. (I even confronted one SOutherner involved in smuggling on this site....yes, he was a Southerner.).
TLDR: The problem with subsidy is not the North, it is the fact that Nigerians want cheap fuel. Seems there is no solution then!!! |

Kobonaire234: Actually
1.Dangote intial funding for refinery was $3 BILLION in his own money, and 6 billion from the banks. Loans. (Not dash, LOANS. With repayment tenor).
2.Yes, he got money from the CBN....in the form of a loan. (Which he has to pay back).
3.Yes, government is right to give him dollars at the official rate. It is called incentivizing local production...since out of the over 20 official refinery licenses issued by NNPC, he and 3-4 others have decided to build refineries. The thing is, at the end, the returns Dangote refinery would bring to the country....jobs, tax revenue, forex...are far more than any money government gives him.
Infact if I was president of Nigeria, and someone like you came with a plan to build 2 refineries, or 2 power staitons , I would give you dollars at official rate. Because I see benefit to the country. Who are the 3-4 others please?. Cos it's only Dangote refinery i know about. |

MeineMutter: That’s your own imagination. Nigeria is not supplying those countries. You could have said Nigerians are smuggling petrol to those countries. We ordinary Nigerians are part of the chaos in the petroleum sector value chain. Right from exploration to distribution. Everybody believes its parts of hustling.
Na sone go dey go until all the refineries are fully privatized, NNPC dismantled, and subsidy fully removed.
I only know Nigerians would be on the street to protest, immediately any of these is about to be implemented.

The mutual fund is quite different from tbills. In mutual funds the rate u start with is not rate u will end with, u get the interest at end of tenure/period or when you decide to end it.
Tbills interest is upfront. Ok. Thanks. |

IbeOkehie: Freedom - in Nigeria you will suffer greatly if you're atheist, gay or lesbian or you say the wrong thing about a powerful politician or even your richer neighbor who can hire POLICE to detain and beat you up. Yes, I saw that happen in Nigeria. Such is *less likely* to happen in the Anglo-West.
Taxes - just yesterday at this swimming place where my daughter is taking lessons - https://www.aqua-tots.com/raleigh/?utm_source=Profiles&utm_medium=GoogleMaps&utm_campaign=AquaTots - someone had a heart attack. Guess what? Fire trucks and ambulance arrived in 8 minutes (I timed it because it happened right when our lessons finished). You can call the school and politely ask what happened to their instructor yesterday that had a health emergency, are they OK? What would have happened in Nigeria? That's what taxes are for, it's a REAL THING, I know people in Nigeria who DIED from exactly such an emergency.
Bills - you get what you pay for, choose what you want. Simple as that. For example, I don't have cable TV anymore. I can buy a solar system OR Generac generator tomorrow and cut off my electric utility supplier. I can dig a well in my home and supply my own water, YES IT'S ACTUALLY VERY COMMON TO DO THAT in the USA, especially in smaller towns. The fact is that maintaining such stand alone systems is difficult. For example you have to treat and purify the water to prevent disease, it's not easy. So I have CHOSEN to stay on the public system. And yes, my water bill was $20 per month 10 years ago and now it's $150, but that's my CHOICE.
Nigerian Food - I eat just about any Nigerian food I want and for your info, we get BETTER QUALITY Nigerian food here than you will ever find in Nigeria. Why? The producers want FOREX so they make sure to send THE BEST to markets in US/UK. My mother comments on this all the time. If you want to eat the best quality Nigerian food, the US/UK is where you get it.
2nd Class Citizen - I'm an Igbo man. I think have more rights in the USA than Nigeria. Another example, I can own land in the USA but not in Nigeria. Yes, no individual owns land in Nigeria, your Governor can take it at any time, that's the law. There's more prejudice, discrimination and bigotry in Nigeria than in the UK or USA.
Feeling Out of Place - When I moved back to Nigeria in 2011, that was when I felt out of place because my life style was so outstanding compared to most people around me. Once I left the confines of my home, all I saw was poverty everywhere. It made me uncomfortable. I noticed pure HATRED in the eyes of people because of my living standards. Forget feeling out of place, I felt under threat.
Your counter-factual commentary is very interesting for insight into the mind of the Nigerian. Much as I sympathize with the Nigerian people, I've said it many times they're their own worst enemies. Take what's going on RIGHT NOW, how will anyone in their right minds campaign for APC? Crazy, but it's Nigerians who believed Buhari when he said "there's nothing like fuel subsidy" LOL. Sadly, the same attitude is creeping into the USA and yes, things are changing as a result. As in, APC = Democratic Party, check the policies.
So what are you trying to accomplish by putting out all these comments? You talk about living a paradisal life in Nigeria when rich elderly Nigerians are now moving here to the USA to retire I can't mention names, but I know a whole Nigerian Army Colonel who retired here, his daughter told me a few years ago he couldn't collect his Nigerian pension while he was living in Nigeria, he got tired of the whole thing and left. I know a Central Bank Governor whose child schooled with me, that's a Big Man for sure, he lives in the USA now. I know a businessman who owns a few high value buildings in Lagos, he lives here now, he even brought his adult kids and their spouses and grandchildren, I kid you not! In fact if I start reeling out names you will be shocked. Let me tell you, if I could exhume my father's grave and bring his dead body here, I would...at least he'll be buried in a decent cemetry with manicured lawns, bright flowers and all.
I read a comment where someone else was saying that those over age 35 or whatever should think twice about migrating. Well, I can tell you from REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE that it's still a good thing and I learned it from my own mothers experience. My mother is well known in the Nigerian community here. I know at least 4 people over the age of 55 who came to USA and started life over and have now accomplished things they could NEVER DREAM OF DOING in Nigeria. Like the lady who came here at age 50 to visit her daughter and new born baby in Baltimore, she started taking nursing classes. Eventually she decided to stay in America, she brought her husband and now they bought their own home and she works as a nurse and only now is building a house in Nigeria....for what I don't know, but there it is.
It's one thing to disparage those of us abroad with an anonymous post, it's another to bring real life experience to the board as I'm doing. My wife has told me how they used to look down on Nigerians living abroad when she worked in Nigeria. And this is someone who traveled the world, surprisingly the myth persisted for her until she came to LIVE here. Now let me shock you, I used to be a big proponent of moving back to Nigeria for all the reasons YOU HAVE GIVEN HERE, until I actually moved back to Nigeria in 2011. After I came back with my tail between my legs, I was the laughing stock of my social circle. And it's not just me, I know literally a dozen people that have moved back to Nigeria and it didn't work. Our experience is a VALIDATION of the STATISTICS....it's very difficult to live in Nigeria, the conditions are horrible even for the rich. One rich guy I know in PH is telling me his biggest problem is ELEMENTARY EDUCATION for his little kids, the cost in Nigeria is too high even for him and he's planning to send his wife and kids out here to take advantage of the TAX SUPPORTED quality education here. What was that thing you were saying about TAXES?
Theory is one thing, EXPERIENCE is another. You and your kind talk about taking VACATIONS in the UK/USA, but have you LIVED here? Nobody who has actually LIVED & WORKED here will say Nigeria is a better place for ANYONE except maybe 0.01% of the population. Please stop posting comments that are at best misleading. Nigerians are generally IGNORANT of even their own country and you're making it worse. The people criticising those going abroad are those who don't have money to go or those who already have a second passport and can leave anytime they want. The truth is Nigeria is becoming unsafe everyday even for the rich people. I pray for safety for those who can't afford to go right now.. What i don't want is to go abroad and be forced to do nursing because that seems to be the only sector that pays well and vacancy is always open for blacks. |
