Beaf: ^Edo became an empire after Ewuare came to power. Some written documents suggest that relations between Benin and Oyo, when communication was actually maintained between the two, were cordial. Egharevba states that there was one Benin-Oyo war which ended in stalemate and an agreement about territorial boundaries however. Interestingly enough there is written mention in an old document of Benin warring with a kingdom designated as 'Isago' which earlier scholars interpreted as meaning Shango which the Edo call Esago and therefore as a reference to Oyo, but which modern scholars (such as John K. Thornton) identify as one of multiple very similar names which refer to the Nupe kingdom. Robin Law's analysis of this claim (in his book on Oyo) by Egharevba in the context of other history makes me think that it was Oyo however. |
Beaf: EWAEN EDOGHIMIOYAI thought about posting that, but the author's tone/attitude is too disrespectful toward Egharevba, in all honesty. Egharevba is still rightly regarded highly by his people and is not just any other author. |
bayooooooo: Not Ade-Ajayi that I know. If he had not read Oba of Benin's book, he would not grant the interview. From the interview, he dismissed the book as an autobiography which was lacking in evidence as a historical piece. That at least showed he was familiar with the position of the Oba.The thing is he couldn't distinguish between Akoko-Edo and Edo-Akure, and actually seemed to think there was no difference between the 1st and 4th editions of Egharevba's book. I don't think he did his 'required reading' but I'll limit my criticism to just that, since I respect the man. Anyway, I get where he's coming from with his comments, but I don't really agree with his logic or the factual quality of some of his other statements (such as those about Oba Akenzua II). I don't think I have much interest in this thread anymore though, so good night. |
I was pretty disappointed in Ade-Ajayi's response. He got several things wrong not just factually, but also logically. I also suspect that he's not familiar with the scholarship on Egharevba, what Egharevba actually wrote, and also didn't actually read what the Oba of Benin wrote. ![]() |
I don't think any progress is being made and we seem to be talking past each other, so I'll just give up on getting an explanation of this Yoruba-Kanuri situation from you at this time. Another time, then. |
You think I care enough about Osahon's article to start discussing it? I've no interest in his article or his claims and as I've said before, had you not brought up this Yoruba-Kanuri imbroglio, I would not have bothered to respond to the thread. Since you brought up the Yoruba-Kanuri fiasco, you should elaborate on it. By the way, I got the impression that the Oba of Lagos was your king. Since he agreed with the Oba of Benin, what does that mean? What are you going to label him? |
You keep asking people who have expressed no belief in migration from Egypt to defend somebody else's claim of migration from Egypt. ![]() My only interest on this thread is to learn about the Yoruba-Kanuri fiasco. I've already read your tale of Yoruba and Gobir, and now I would like some more of these bedtime stories so I can go to sleep. It's got nothing to do with attacking anyone. ![]() |
Negro ntns, I'm familiar with the Clapperton-Bello stuff and have been for a while. I didn't ask about that, but about details regarding Yoruba-Kanuri entanglement. By the way, given that no Bini poster in this thread so far has accepted the "Egypt ----> Edo" stuff or expressed even the slightest belief in it, why do you keep repeating that request? I'm not interested in Egypt------>West Africa claims. |
Negro_Ntns: lol@few years ago. How many years and which Oba, Oyekan or Akiolu?Oba Rilwan Akiolu. Like 9 or 10 years ago. Anyway, that's not what I'm presently interested in. Let's hear about the Kanuri. Alj harem can probably help you out with that one. |
Negro_Ntns: If you have knowledge of me talking about it, then apparently you read it or was told about it. That was your opportunity when it was a live discussion to jump in and get clarifications. "The Correct History of Edo" is live in discussion, "Yoruba-Kanuri" is not. Do not sidestep my challenge to you to share your roadmap across the desert between Egypt and Bini.I have knowledge of it only from your mention of it on this thread. Kindly elaborate on the Yoruba-Kanuri history. Thanks. ![]() |
Negro_Ntns: We should ask this Oba to tell us what he knows about the blood ties and hierarchy between Ife and Bini. He has both the Ife and Bini blood in him and he is schooled in his ancestral roots.Actually the Oba of Lagos supported the Oba of Benin's account a few years ago and he was criticized for it by some people. So maybe we should not dwell on that. ![]() Let's instead dwell on Yoruba and Kanuri and Sudan. |
Negro_Ntns: When I discussed the Yoruba-Kanuri topic, you saw it, you read it. . .why did it take this long for you to enquire about information. Take a look at the topic on this thread. . . do you see Yoruba-Kanuri?I never saw or read about any Yoruba-Kanuri episode from your collection of stories, or else I would not be asking for it now. Kindly provide a link. I'm only familiar with the legend of Gobir and Yoruba from you so far. ![]() |
alj harem: I am waiting for PhysicsQED to tell me the difference between Epha and Ifa BTW.You obviously haven't read up on this in any detail hence your going to that website. My point, which you don't seem to get is that it is factually wrong to even so much as imply that the numerous versions of that divination system are "Yoruba derived". I'm not going to bother to belabor this point since ive already looked at this in detail and I know that I would get nothing from here that would improve on the facts that I already do have. |
Negro_Ntns: . . You should be interested in Osahon's myth since you fervently oppose Egarhevba's. They are the two sides of the Bini coin. Why do people keep throwing around Egharevba's name when they haven't bothered to read him? ![]() Egharevba said the Binis came from Egypt before this Osahon guy was even born. The Yorubas have their Egyptian or Near eastern fantasies as well so it's nothing out of the ordinary for southern Nigeria. By the way I hold Egharevba in infinitely higher esteem than this Osahon chap, so don't misrepresent my views. I only posted on this topic to find out about the Yoruba-Kanuri entanglement, since what you guys are talking about now is no longer interesting. |
alj harem:Just for the record, "epha" is NOT derivative of what the Yoruba call "ifa", rather they share the same source. The same system is known by a virtual legion of ethnic groups by various related names. The notion of some sort of ethnic exclusivity is modern academic mythology. |
Beaf: The only two near perfect versions of past history you can get in Southern Nigeria are the histories as related by the Edo's and Ijaws. Every other history is made up.Nobody's history is going to be "near perfect" in a society relying on oral history and it's completely unnecessary to make polarizing (and unsupported) statements like "every other history is made up". |
Negro_Ntns: I knew you would soon pop in to single out Negro_Ntns for attack. Do me a favor, share your tale of the beginnings of Bini and its journey from Egypt. Feel free to quote all the Eurocentrists you can find in your archive to back up Osahon and your Oba claim. ![]() That wasn't any kind of 'attack'. It was light teasing at best. Unlike Osahon I'm not interested in any mythical Edo Egyptians. I want to hear about Yoruba-Kanuri interactions. Don't disappoint. ![]() |
Didn't this guy's footsoldiers used to spam this forum a while back? ![]() |
This again? This is a boring topic now. Talk about something more interesting. Negro ntns, tell us about Yoruba-Kanuri interactions. You had quite a story last time when it came to Dan Fodio, Gobir, and Yoruba. I want to see if you can outdo your previous tale. ![]() |
"Goodluck Diigbo"? Seriously? |
I thought an underwater hotel already existed? I'm pretty sure I saw a video of that, but maybe this is the first fully underwater hotel. |

http://www.conceptvessel.net/iyare/index.html ^^^ This is an interesting and informative site. It's not a substitute for the books I've mentioned earlier as far as learning about Benin, but it has some other things (such as a few videos, and a forthcoming attempt at a 3D reconstruction of the palace). I encourage anyone interested in Benin's culture and art to check out three sections especially: "Exhibition" "Culture" and "Videos." The Exhibition section, relying on information from previous scholars on Benin gives brief summaries of the significance of several pieces of art and material culture from ancient Benin. The Culture section, although small, has some interesting pictures and information as well. The Video section shows 5 specific palace ceremonies being performed in modern times. http://www.conceptvessel.net/iyare/exhibition.html http://www.conceptvessel.net/iyare/culture.html http://www.conceptvessel.net/iyare/videos.html It also has a page of suggesting sources of information: http://www.conceptvessel.net/iyare/resources.html http://www.conceptvessel.net/iyare/downloads/iyare_print_resources.pdf |
This is some high quality, grade A trolling right here. Keep it up spartakos, it's entertaining. |
@topic, you can't be serious. |
@ekt bear, Japan is actually putting a lot of effort into solar following their nuclear crisis, but that's clearly for reasons of safety rather than cost. |
@ekt. Bear, I'm not typing from a real computer right now so I can't post links, but the article I was referring to is called ' solar and nuclear costs: the historic crossover ' . However upon doing some further searching about the article i found that it had been seriously debunked, so i was indeed wrong there. My mistake. @Gbawe, I agree natural gas is the way to go and i was pleasantly surprised to read that the current administration is trying to get foreign investment in that area. |
No offense, but the very idea of this sounds foolish. |
gsmgold: say what?Allegations that her claims of working at certain places and getting certain degrees were totally false. I never really saw a refutation of the allegations and I was wondering if that situation was ever cleared up/explained or if the allegations were basically considered true. |
Were they even in consideration? |
@ekt bear, I think the cost of solar recently went down to around that of nuclear. |
Just out of curiosity, how was that issue of her having fake degrees and/or employment history resolved? |
