Eutelsat beefs up Middle East, North Africa broadcasting Leading satellite operator Eutelsat has ordered a new satellite from Thales Alenia Space to enhance its operations in the Middle East and North Africa. The new EUTELSAT 8 West B spacecraft will be launched in 2015 to 8° West, joining satellites already operated at the adjacent 7° West position by Eutelsat and the Egyptian satellite company, Nilesat. EUTELSAT 8 West B satellite will be equipped with 40 operational Ku-band transponders and will also introduce a C-band mission to 8° West, with 10 operational transponders connected to footprints covering the African continent and reaching west as far as South America. For the 7/8° West neighbourhood, Eutelsat will redeploy an existing Ku-band satellite to 8° West in 2013. This will increase resources in advance of the launch of EUTELSAT 8 West B, enabling more broadcasters to benefit from a prime neighbourhood. Broadcasting services from both positions, said to be one of the most dynamic in the global satellite TV market. Eutelsat says that its additional capacity will meet further expansion in the market where capacity demand for video services is forecast to grow by 6.8% a year over the coming five years with HDTV channels expected to increase fourfold over the coming ten years. |

Samuel Eto'o back as Cameroon seek to prevent upset Striker Samuel Eto'o returns to the Cameroon side as they attempt to prevent elimination from the African Nations Cup at the hands of the island archipelago of Cape Verde in the final round of qualifiers this weekend. Along with Cape Verde Islands, the Central African Republic are also on the verge of their first African Nations Cup qualification in a turn about in fortunes for two of the continent's smallest countries from virtually no international competition just over 10 years ago. Cape Verde Islands are 2-0 up against four-times winners Cameroon, who replaced their coach following their first-leg defeat. Eto'o, who had refused to play in the first match after labelling the set-up around the team amateurish, made himself available for Sunday's game following a meeting with Cameroon's prime minister. |

Malawi’s Broadcasting Boom Malawians on their way to work in the morning or eating supper home in the evening will soon be struggling with a new and decidedly tricky problem - which of the myriad TV and radio stations to choose. For years, Malawians have had little choice - and under the authoritarian regime of former president, Bingu wa Mutharika, there seemed little chance of many new stations being allowed to broadcast. But as with so many things in Malawi, Mutharika's death has paved the way for radical change. Astonishingly, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has just awarded not one or two but fifteen new radio and TV licences to prospective broadcasters, who had applied for the licenses two years ago. The announcement of names of successful broadcasters comes barely a week after the Malawi Chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-Malawi) wrote to MACRA expressing concern on the delays in granting broadcasting licenses. Currently, Malawi boast just one public and two religious television stations but these will soon be joined by the new broadcasters, including Times Television, a subsidiary of The Times Group; Zodiak Broadcasting Station; Chancellor College Community; Adventist; Timveni; Good News and Beta TV. Some of the applicants that have been awarded radio broadcasting licenses are Central African Presbyterian Synods of Blantyre, Nkhoma and Livingstonia; Chancellor College Community; Matindi; Mwandama and Bua FM. The Minister of Information, Moses Kunkuyu, said that liberalisation of the broadcasting industry was one of the less publicised goals of the new Joyce Banda administration. "It is a clear manifestation that government has set its priority towards empowering Malawians through information knowledge. Government will ensure that diversity of views in the media is guaranteed. One way of doing this will be the continued granting of broadcasting licences to independent television and radio stations," said Kunkuyu. The minister further explained that the prospective broadcasters are expected to roll out within twelve months for television and six months for radio. Commenting on this development, MISA-Malawi Chairperson, Anthony Kasunda, applauded the government for promoting media freedom and media pluralism. He was also quick to ask media houses to roll out their services within the scheduled time to prevent their licences from being revoked - and to stress that this development would create employment for media professionals "This development is a key milestone in the history of broadcasting in Malawi," said Kasunda. |

Newcastle stadium reverts to St James' Park in sponsorship deal Newcastle's stadium name will revert to St James' Park after the Premier League club agreed a four-year sponsorship deal with a loan company. Wonga will become the club's main shirt sponsor from next season, replacing Virgin Money, and will also invest £1.5m in the club's academy. The firm also purchased the stadium naming rights and decided on a return to the traditional name. The stadium had been called the Sports Direct Arena since November 2011. |
Man Utd, Real Madrid dominate global shirt sales as Chelsea make huge strides Manchester United and Real Madrid have dominated kit sales over the past five years. United (Nike) and Real (Adidas) have sold an average of 1.4m official replica shirts globally each year in the past five years – more than any other clubs in the world. Barcelona are No3 on the sales list (Nike, average 1.15m sales a year) followed by Chelsea in fourth place (adidas, 910,000). The top 10 also includes Bayern Munich (adidas), Liverpool (adidas during the research period, now Warrior), Arsenal (Nike), Juventus (Nike), Inter Milan (Nike) and Milan (adidas). Veteran analyst Dr Peter Rohlmann and his team at the consulting bureau, PR Marketing, put the figures together. Oladat: pls gurus, can i upgrade a strong decoder with another strong decoder?Yes, provided they are of the same model and you are using the right cable. |
Alabiep: pls guys i ve a problem understanding dis symbol rate 5/6 or 3/4 or even 1/2,pls can somebody explain all dis 2 me plssss! You cannot have Symbol Rate of 5/6 or 3/4 etc. Symbol rate is in full digits like 2170, 13200, 27500 and not fractions. Those fractions, 3/4 or 1/2 are what we call FEC. Most FTA receivers do not need FEC, all they need is Frequency, Polarity, and Symbol Rate in put. In telecommunication, information theory, and coding theory, Forward Error Correction (FEC) or channel coding is a technique used for controlling errors in data transmission over unreliable or noisy communication channels. FEC gives the receiver the ability to correct errors without needing a reverse channel to request retransmission of data, but at the cost of a fixed, higher forward channel bandwidth. FEC is therefore applied in situations where retransmissions are costly or impossible, such as one-way communication links and when broadcasting to multiple receivers in multicast.FEC processing in a receiver may be applied to a digital bit stream or in the demodulation of a digitally modulated carrier. For the latter, FEC is an integral part of the initial analog-to-digital conversion in the receiver. |

Felixdav: @kelvinhopter, there is a "search" icon on this fta page; type in the "keywords" that relate DIRECTLY to the sat u re investigating (like mbc3, arryadia, w3c, etv hydepark, and any other u may need). The search engine will give u all the appropriate result options as they relate to nairaland fta threads. I get all my satellite info this way without bothering to ask any questions except of course if a different or new satellite channel which has not been treated becomes an fta football channel.Intelligent man and an intelligent response! |
A lot is happening out there...and is it only in South America? ![]() South America to hit TV pirates hard There are an estimated 200,000 pirate set-top boxes in use in Chile, Venezuela, Peru and Colombia today. Tomorrow many of them will be useless if the scheme mooted by the region’s pay-TV operators have their way. Starting immediately, broadcasters will address the widespread software hacking which permits users to access up to 200 channels. Nagra Kudelski is reportedly participating in the action, which traditionally involves electronic counter-measures to disable hacked smart cards. The disabling action will continue until October 22nd. By Chris Forrester |
