How exactly does pumping money into banks "cushion the economic situation?"

Is it the 2.5% interest you get on deposits?

Or the 25% interest rate for loan repayment?.

I laff in Izon.

If you greatly diminish the money/credit- creating abilities if banks in a generator economy such as we have, then you have Nuked the entire economy.
Daahhhh!!
That's my point.
Which slowpoke drains the banking system of credit - creating abilities at a time of economic recession, when
every major economy, economies more robust and diversified that ours, are doing the exact opposite by pumping as much liquidity as possible into the economy via the banking system? shocked

Give it rest, guy. You've been decisively TKO'ed on virtually every wobbly point you tried to raise. Time to quit.

But if you're particularly desperate to haul critical darts at PMB' govt, there are far more tenable and contentious issues to pick from - lopsided appointments, selective anti-corruption drive, economy, etc. But TSA is NOT one of them. Its one of the best decisions taken.

At the risk of repeating what others have said, those people wailing (permit the word) most likely benefited from the largess that came with easy FG money in their vaults.

BTW, I'm not aware of any bank complaining of liquidity issues. Heck, I'm inundated with mails from banks asking me to come take a loan from them. Where is the money coming from?

I agree FG should spend more at this critical time, but putting the money in coffers of commercial banks is not the solution, simply because those monies are usually beyond the reach of average bizman, no thanks to their ulcer-inducing lending rates.

There is a high tendency that the phone which the person operates the app for mobile trasaction is the same phone with the number registered with the bank.
Pin? Lool......some people store their online pins carelessly in the message drafts or in a saved note somewhere in the phone.

used to be guilty of the above. Could u believe i even stored it as 'diamond bank passwd' shocked shocked embarassed embarassed embarassed embarassed

Thankfully I've since rectified it as recognizing how dangerous it is.

Moreover I believe most banks have discontinued the SMS-based or software (app-based) OTP. You must use the hardware.

Furthermore some conscientious banks (eg GTB) require a two step verification for transfers; all beneficiaries must first be registered using a secret word AND the hardware token before any transfer can be effected. So even if in the unlikely even both token and the app passward are compromised, transfers can only be made to the previously registered beneficiaries. new ones cannot be added without the secret word.

I hear you. Worse still are his paid or blind followers who see nothing wrong with whatever this old hypocrite does in Nigeria.
BTW, where was everybody when Buhari and the other northern politicians used the same BBC Hausa service to go after GEJ just about on a daily basis

Just as you and your like see no evil in GEJ.

Truth is, like salam8528 brilliantly surmised below, there is really NO difference between PMB and GEJ supporters. Its all about blind, zombie-like, sycophantic, clannish support for your respective idols - PMB and GEJ.

Despite how our APC and PDP supporters like to make it seem like they are any "different" from each other, they actually share LOTS of similarities. Let's point them out, shall we?

1) Their comments are often half thought: The minute a thread that has Buhari, APC or PDP in it's title created, many of their supporters rush in to either "book space" or drop some irrelevant comment that has NOTHING to do with the topic. Even if the op is trying to make some sense or trying to point out the incompetence of our leaders, they will rush to defend or abuse the op instead of the topic. The result of this is unnecessary bantering that leads nowhere and whatever message was trying to be delivered never gets addressed.

2) They all support and defend corruption and corrupt leaders: This is the most interesting part of it all. Despite the fact that PDP basically shared all of Nigeria's funds among themselves, were unable to put adequate infrastructure in place, have members who have been "accused" of several crimes etc you will still find several people supporting and even hoping of voting them back into power if given the chance.

One way we the nigerian youths can bring this revolution is through the National Association of Nigerian students (NANS). Since most youths in Nigeria are within the tertiary institutions, the youths through NANS can organise a well cordinated campaign (or protest as the case may be) by linking with the leadership of all higher institutions irrespective of whether private, state or federal accross the country. By this we students can in one piece embark on strike or any other means possible except violence untill all neccessary amendments are made. Believe me if all students are in one direction, the government would have no choice but to grant our desired needs.

Very good idea. how about marching to the NASS and insisting each legislator contribute a certain about from the very fat packages they receive into pool that can then be used to finance the education of indigent students??

Obviously, most of you contributors are "big men", so its easy come here to pontificate about the of the appropriateness or otherwise of that thread that has become a solicitation platform of sorts.

Having been in such a situation before I know what difference something as seemingly insignificant as 5k can make to a struggling student. Yes the 5k will not feed them forever, but it will achieve something. Start with that little one first, and let them handle what happens tomorrow. . .tomorrow.

Youngmudulus and co should be commended for the very kind gesture they have displayed. They are true Nigerian heros, not the APC vs PDP, my-tribe-is-better-than-yours noise makers that litter the boards.

HOWEVER, though I was tempted to give my own contribution, I have held back. The reason is that I did a quick check of the post history of those dropping acc numbers and was not impressed with some of the comments I saw. There are of course genuine ones, and I wish there was a way one could verify those individuals that are truly in need, particularly students.

I do agree that with 91 posts and counting, the thread is sad and very disturbing portrayal of the plight of the youths in the country. sad

Politics / Re: List Of AMCON 217 “Chronic Debtors” by plendil: 2:45pm On Jun 27, 2016
Bagehot:

For starters, a great deal of uncertainty. Only a fool would have invested money in Nigeria in late 2014/early 2015 given the uncertainty in the political clime. Buhari also messed up by not rolling out early enough (i.e. naming ministers and what not) - again uncertainty cos of no clear policy direction, although he could be forgiven cos the power change in the country was unprecedented, as it implied APC would have had to change a lot of the structure of the erstwhile ruling PDP. Buhari's biggest f**k-up however, was trying to wish away reality - he refused to devalue the naira.

The truth is the naira was already devalued on the streets long before the government announced it - at least 8 months of lag time passed. In refusing to do what was right, Buhari gave room for profiteers and currency speculators to cash in big-time on the huge margins between the official rates and the street rates. Again, imagine you were an investor, and you had $1m to put into Nigeria, why would you do that when the government would give you N198m, meanwhile the real value of your money in Nigeria is around N340m? Also consider that in trying to repatriate profit, you would be doing so at a massive loss, cos well CBN rate + FX controls. We all assume utopia would be N1=$1; we are wrong. If that was the case suddenly, I would with my (let's assume) N6m salary suddenly be able to afford a Rolls-Royce, priceless jewelries e.t.c. as compared to my mate that earns $100k working as a software engineer at Google (insert your favourite tech giant here). Please how does this make sense?

Again I should reiterate that the financial institutions in Nigeria are still largely primitive due to the greed of Nigerian bankers. Prior to TSA, there was CRR which squeezed a lot of Nigerian banks out of public sector deposits. How about if I tell you that only GTB had over 70% of its deposits from the private sector? In other words, every bank was keeping government's money, and loaning the same money back to government at ridiculous interest rates. So there really wasn't much incentive to do 'real banking'. Now that the cockerel has come home to roost, they have all been caught napping.

As regards someone's question about how oil is not a substantial part of our economy, I beg to differ. Oil truly is a small fraction of our economy, but it is still a major contributor to government revenue, as well as our number 1 source of FX. Government being the biggest spender in the economy, by refusing to spend money (due to issues with passing the budget and whatnot) contributed to slowing growth. Asides that, of all the things we produce in Nigeria, how many bring home billions in FX?

The truth is Buhari has had a few missteps - yes. But what is happening now is just the cockerel coming home to roost; the bubble would have burst sooner or later.

WOW! Splendid!!

Bad idea.
This will only work if the banks fulfil the following conditions.
1. Install more ATM's
2. Constantly load the ATM with cash so that it doesn't run out.
3. The network on the ATM must NEVER go offline.
4. Remove charges for using another banks ATM
5. Increase the ATM daily withdrawal limit to above N1 Million

Not really ATMS per say, (though its still better than queuing in overcrowded banking halls). The idea is to explore all e-hcannels, POS, etc.
