Please attest to what you know for fact. The death of Oba in Yoruba land is not a matter for liver-hearted humans. I am an insider who knew the corners.
I believe you are referring to the practice/culture of Oro, whereby headhunters go about looking for heads of innocent and hapless individuals to accompany their king to the great beyond.

This culture is also cleverly captured by Wole Soyinka in his book, "Death and the King's Horseman." A culture which requires the King's horseman to commit ritual suicide, and be buried with the Kings.

It was a tragedy, as the Kings Horseman was unable to complete the ritual due to fair, and cowardice! His son - Olunde, a Western educated medical doctor completed the ritual on behalf of the cowardly father.

According to a Yoruba tradition, the death of a chief must be followed by the ritual suicide of the chief's horseman, because the horseman's spirit is essential to helping the chief's spirit ascend to the afterlife. Otherwise, the chief's spirit will wander the earth and bring harm to the Yoruba people

And you wonder why ordinary people will turn militant overnight. Obj was a big problem and cause of militancy in the ND, and was indirectly responsible for boko haram when he failed to deal effectively with sharia in the north.
PoliticsRe: Former Militant, Boyloaf, Becomes Presidential Envoy by PointB: 5:05pm On Feb 02, 2012
@Jason, and brainpulse,
It all boil down to the same thing. Can you guys produce evidence of boyloaf criminal conviction? If you cannot are you not groping unintelligently?

Boyloaf just like obj, and tinubu, and bankole have not being convicted by any court in Nigeria. What is good for the goose is good for the gander!

If you compare Boyloaf to boko haram, the obj is an equivalent of Hitler. The victims of Obj genocide in Odi and Tiv are calling for justice. The government failed to dock Obj, and the same government failed to dock Boyloaf.

so you guys should quit your stupidity cos it is becoming irritating!
PoliticsRe: Calmly, Honestly, Sincerely And Truthfully by PointB: 4:52pm On Feb 02, 2012
The antecedents and pedigree of people on my list is there for everyone to see. Likewise there fault and failings.

It is too early in the day to start campaigning for any of them; and by the way there is nothing wrong for calling for Nigerian president of SE origin, cos if you look at that list, everyone on it will have a torrid time trying to outperform any of the SE candidate. That in itself is fact. But then because 'best man' is relative, political equity must be put into consideration. There I stand!
PoliticsRe: Former Militant, Boyloaf, Becomes Presidential Envoy by PointB: 4:43pm On Feb 02, 2012
@Demdem
the real killers here are Obj, Tinubu, and Bankole.

while Obj not only physically massacre Odi, and Tiv people, he stole ND oil and share it out among his cronies, and drove the people to militancy! He did not stop there. He rubbed salt into the injuries by installing his cronies as governors all over the country to further destroy the people. Have you called for Obj head yet?

How about Tinubu who jumps from one crime to another? From identity theft to drug peddling to certificate forgery. Now imposing candidates, election rigging and Lagos state treasury looting is his forte as we speak? How many times have you called for his head? Have you not rather elevated this common criminal to Awo status? A leader of Yoruba people?

bankole? The less said of the young theif the better. I won't forget that Yoruba elders actual went to appeal on his behalf. Shamelessly.

the problem with some of you Yoruba two-faced treacherous poster is that you think you are smarter than the rest of Nigerians and no one see through your scheming. Always looking for who to bring down.

anyway, you have met your match in Ijaws, the rest of us will watch this unfold. And throw our weight to maintain the balance from tipping.

So if Obj, Tinubu and Bankole can half free, the least Boyloaf should get is ambassadorial position not some glorified errand boy position called envoy!

Good to know that some of the names I deliberately listed can be excised on the basis of your 'understanding.' That also imply that you understanding is subjective and cannot be authoritative. The fact that you don't even know what constitute a 'best man' is another indicator of the hopelessness of starting thread like this. Because there is no acceptable agreement on what constitute the best man, political inequalities must be given consideration at this time of our polity. There can be no convergence of ideas under the present lopsided political arrangement. I hope you learnt a lot in the last Subsidy/regime change protest! I do hope you did!

what is the difference btw Boyloaf and the other militant boys?

If die-hard and shameless criminals like tinubu and bankole can breath free air, why should a remorseful militant be punished?

those boys are reformed militants and are as responsible as any of those you mentioned. The oil is mined in their creeks and they'll probably make more money from bunkering than from working with the president.

Perhaps you are the one who does not understand me. Your best man theory will only work in an ideal society. Nigeria is not one.

My solution is that we first solve the problem of political inequality. If Nigerians had not voted Abiola and Obj, you won't stand here to ask me to forget tribalism and sentiment and vote for the 'best man.'

In any case, I have identified a few best men for you to choose from, and they are: Rochas, Amechi, David Mark, El Rufia, Fashola, Chime and Okonjo Iweala.

Now what is your excuse?
PoliticsRe: Uwazuruike To Igbo Leaders: You Are Callous by PointB: 3:08pm On Feb 02, 2012
^^
I don't see anything directionless in the leadership of Igbo tribe.

on contrary, i see leaders who are passionate in providing solutions to the plight of their people. Take the different directives as alternative solutions. A lot of Igbo are reluctant to leave their 'comfort' zone to start life afresh, even in with the state of situation. Igbo leaders are offering them suggestion and solutions to the security problems.

Perhaps the question we should be asking, what are other southern leaders doing to get their people out of the chaotic situation, Igbos have taken the lead even though their is no one size fits all solution to the problem.
PoliticsRe: Calmly, Honestly, Sincerely And Truthfully by PointB: 2:56pm On Feb 02, 2012
@Op,
'He who comes to equity must come with open and indeed clean hands.'

Nigerians have voted for Yorubaman, hausa/fulani man, and an IJaw man for presidency! We will keep talking about the same issue for years until Igboman is voted as president of the country or Nigeria is divided. All this preaching about the ills of ethnicity and all what's not is a monumental waste of energy! Over million Igbos and other tribes in the south are not happy with the status quo.

We can keep preaching endlessly or we correct this problem once and for all in 2015. South East will put forward one of their brilliant minds in 2015, we can use that opportunity to correct Nigeria political or watch us support a candidate who will make mouth watering 'promise' to us. Senator David Mark readily comes to mind here!

Nigeria progress lies in the path of political equity. My widow's mite to this debate.
PoliticsRe: Uwazuruike To Igbo Leaders: You Are Callous by PointB: 12:38pm On Feb 02, 2012
Uwazuruike, Rochas and other Igbo leaders are saying the same thing.

They have all acknowledged the the security situation in the country and the magnitude of challenge facing the security personnel.

They are all passionate about the need to protect Igbos and Igbos business and investment.

And they are all right in asking Igbo to return home or stay back in the north. This is in view of the fact that not all part of the north is volatile at the moment. So Igbos in the North will listen to the voice that best address his current need. Those in dire situation will listen to the call to return, and those in relative comfort or safety will stay back.

The seemingly divergent voice address the same situation and are both correct. Housing returnee in veteran camps (termed refugee camp) is not in anyway sacrilegious. Better a living dog than a dead lion.

Indeed not all Igbo will remain in the North, neither will all return back. The Igbo leaders positions have addressed both side of the divide in Igbo opinion. If I were in the North, I will send the vulnerables home but stay on my job/business and watch the situation unfold.

Nice piece. This article has something that many Africans unfortunately, cannot relate with. Does it not interest you to know why the Americans act all manner of movies with all manner of theories? It's called scenario making. It helps you to prepare for the "unexpected". Just think of likely and unlikely events and make a script out of it. You may be right on one or two of these scenarios. This is what keeps USA ahead of the game.
That is what I was trying to bring up. There are a lot of potential for this Boko Haram issue to spiral out of control. For instance, if those idiots kidnapped American citizens, there is only one way it will end - covert operations!

Your ignorance is clear and explains your narrow mindedness. Do you know what it takes to maintain a Cattle Ranch? I suppose to you, it simply means throwing up fences and putting cattle there, olodo.

I hope you know that many universities offer programs including bachelor's and master's degrees in Cattle Ranch management.  Try sending a cattle rearer to Oxford University to study Cattle Ranch management or to some Texas University to obtain certification in the same subject, and come back and tell me how far; without first carrying out the requisite social engineering.

Don't disgrace yourself by sounding like a dunce.
Lol, so the problem now is going to university to learn how to maintain a ranch? No fulani man is 'intelligent' enough to go to Oxford to study ranch management in aid of his fellow fulani stock? Or they can't afford the tuition fees - I mean the whole fulani tribe? And you so-called social (re)engineering, do you need technocrats from the South? Just state what your problem is!

That should be part of the solution. The other and more important one is the implementation of the necessary social Engineering to bring it to fruition. Unfortunately, our government and leaders are too shortsighted and incompetent to take on such a responsibility. We need very agressive actions from those in power or these kinds of killings will continue - mind you, the elite is not directly affected by the controversy so don't expect prompt actions from it.
What useless grammar are you vomiting - social engineering ko, cow engineering ni!

What the fulani herdsmen need to do is very simple. Sell off one or two cows, buy a land and build a ranch! Negotiate with the minions jobless almajiri to get hay for you in exchange of few naira notes or whatever means of payment you can afford. Over time, you build a more robust system. You don't need government to interfere in this operation unless for regulatory purpose!

Some arugue that Fulanis are of above average intelligience, yet they have to travel hundreds of kilometers on foot in search of food for herds; intelligent indeed! Simple ranch they cannot built; well, very soon southerners will join in this cattle trade, and perhaps we will show you guys how it is done, and you will loose your niche!

I agree with you.

Rochas may have one or two flaws naturally as human, but on the matter of administration and performance as governor, I think he has been performing above average. This water privatisation idea is a very good one. Even if the Imo Water Coporation is moribund as claimed by some, selling over a moribund asset at 100M with a guarantee of another 10M monthly income at no extra cost to the state is nothing sheer of good business acumen. The sort Imo, nay, Nigerians need.

Were I to be Federal Government I will sell Nitel for 1 Naira, if I can get even 20 million monthly, judging from the way the company (Nitel) has been left to decay!

ndu_chucks:
To ask the Fulani cattle herder to change his way of life from within, shows a complete lack of understanding of their plight. Those of them who are Nigerians need our help. The ones I'm concerned with do not go to Ghana or any other West African country. They bring their cattle to Southern Nigeria  from Northern Nigeria to help Southern Nigerians meet their needs for meat.

We must help design a workable mechanism for them and help them with the necessary transition.  This kind of restructuring can only be done by national governments and probably with assistance from the UN and other international organizations.  The killings will continue until we get real leadership from the government.
Why bring the UN into a very basic problem, when we have not invited the US yet to the Boko Haram problem.
Fulani, don't need the UN and International organisation to teach then how to operate a cattle ranch; if they are Nigerians like you claim, their state government should be able to sort this out. There are large expanse of empty land in the North, they can be put to very judicious use as cattle ranch.

In any case, the killing will continue like you said, the affected communities will soon learn how easy to isolate the cows from the herdsmen, and deal with each as appropriate.  grin grin
