I think this is a good step on the part of Mr president. I'm one of those few people who advocate dialogue with them. I have been saying it before, Violent measure doesn't solve terrorism and will never solve it. USA have no Al-qurda or Taliban on their soil, so they could afford to deploy drones to other countries and drop missiles to kill one or two terrorists but 20 innocent people as collateral damages. As long as these innocent people are not Americans, no problem. Do you think American citizens would have welcome this kind of measure on their home soil had these terrorists been living in US? Again, I have said it before that giving amnesty doesn't mean giving out or sharing money to people. This impression was as a result of amnesty given to Niger Delta militants which was accompanied with sharing of money. I don't know why all Christians are objecting to dialogue with them. Is it the fear of Islamising Nigeria? Listening to them doesn't automatically mean that the country has been Islamised. If dialogue can bring an end to this madness within a year, there is no need to take a path violent counter measure that won't solve the problem in the next 20 years. Waste of resources as well. Violent crack down will make many innocent people victims thereby radicalising many more people.
What stu.pid dialogue are we talking about? How do you begin to dialogue with bastards who slaughter fellow citizens in church, a place of worship? How do you dialogue with animals who indiscriminately plant and set off bombs to kill hapless citizens going about their normal routine?

So what kind of dialogue will you offer dead victims, or families of the deceased? How will they feel knowing that their loved ones died for nothing? And the murderers are rewarded with state audience! It is simply not right, nor fair to the survivors, the victims and their loved ones. How can there be peace if there is no justice?

Government will be making a huge mistake extending the olive branch at this time. Boko haram should be comprehensively and militarily defeated! They should surrender and then beg for their lives. This is the only acceptable solution to this madness. They are band of criminal terrorists with no agenda or ideology.  Classifying then in the same category as MEND, OPC, MASSOB, is simply idiotic!

Suswam, Ugbah Suit: Tribunal Discovers ‘Stolen’ Exhibits with ACN

Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue

A mild drama occurred Monday when the Benue State Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Makurdi allegedly discovered that its exhibits, which had disappeared for weeks, were in the possession of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the petitioner in the case before the tribunal.

Crucial exhibits tendered before the tribunal by the ACN and its governorship candidate, Prof. Steve Ugbah, in the April 26, 2011 governorship election, had disappeared from the strong room of the tribunal in controversial circumstances as both the tribunal members and the registry staff had no knowledge of the movement of the documents.

Counsel to the ACN, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), who led Simon Orkuma, and Joe Abaagu, when the case came up Monday, announced to the disbelief of the tribunal that the ACN legal team were in possession of the exhibits.

Akeredolu, who tendered apology to the tribunal, explained that although the legal team was in possession of the documents, he could not say how they were retrieved from the tribunal secretary.

Responding, Chairman of the Tribunal, Justice Halima Mohammed, directed the counsels to the respondents (PDP, Governor Gabriel Suswam and INEC) to meet with the ACN to examine the exhibits to ascertain whether they were tempered with before it would be accepted back as evidence. The recovered exhibits were documents used in the conduct of the April 26, 2011 general election which were tendered in evidence at the tribunal headed by Justice Munir Ladan before it was dissolved following the ruling of the Appeal Court, which dismissed the ACN petition against the PDP.

However, the Supreme Court which heard the appeal brought by the ACN, had ordered a restoration of the panel’s proceedings, and also ordered the reconstitution of the current one which began sitting late last year. Counsel to Suswam, Damian Dodo (SAN) condemned the action of the ACN, saying documents already tendered were property of the tribunal and were not supposed to be taken away by any party to the case under any circumstance.

Meanwhile, the Court of Appeal in Makurdi has declined jurisdiction in any matter brought before it in which the Benue state chapter of the ACN is a party.

Presiding Judge of the Court, Justice Tsamiyya, who made the order in Makurdi, said the Court had arrived at the decision following series of petitions against it by the ACN in Benue State in which the judges were accused of various acts of corruption and called unprintable names.

Justice Tsamiyya spoke when the appeal brought before it by the ACN House of Representatives candidate for Katsina-Ala, Ukum and Logo Federal Constituency in the April 2011 elections, Hon. Mzenda Iho, came up for hearing.

He said the President of the Court of Appeal would determine how best the cases in which the Benue ACN was a party would be heard.

Not a very good move though. Boko Haram will definitely strike back, giving this as an excuse. They should have caught him alive by all means. What now stops his aggrieved cousin from joining BH. God be with us
Nwannem,

Would it have been better the let him escape, if they couldn't catch him alive after the four hour battle? What if he rigs himself with explosives and take half of the assault team with him.

In my opinion, I think they task force did all they could to capture him alive, but had to adapt to the tactical situation. In any case, that is one terrorist mastermind and financier dead!

Negro_Ntns   wrote; Nigerians are robbed!  Even when the condition makes it elementally possible for us to go home and begin a new culture now that we have a weak government and an enabling separationist in North begging us to go away. . . . we remain immobile and dont know what to do or how to begin that new nation we cried so long to have.

Its a pity!!

Negro_Ntns, what you said above is very interesting. I do hope you continue in this new path because we need it, the lower Nigeria needs it, and you need it too. I knew you were better than all those previous hate messages and today is my vindication.

Anyway, back to the post, I believe the rest of Nigeria excluding core north have had it up to their noses. To even imagine that we pretend to be cowering under the core north is beyond ridiculous. How can a section of Nigeria that has education, international awareness, control of press, belief of freedom, resources, connections etc be intimidated into accepting the unacceptable. Right from the end of civil war the north has cornered everything to themselves. I cant even believe we are still talking about helping to educate them after all these years of free reign they had with Nigeria. While I believe that its good to educate the mind but must we be forced at gun point for it? Did the south and middle belt cause a single core northern problem? Why must we pay for everything wrong with Hausa-Fulani? I want to ask Yorubas, Ijaws, Isokos, Igbos - who paid your tuition? Was it not your parents? Did you bomb, main, or kill because you were poor or uneducated? Besides who paid for those students in Igboland that lost their parents after the civil war? Why must we be made scapegoats for every ill that goes on in the core north? I remember when I was in one of those "computer classes" in Nigeria with one cool-looking dude from the north and we kinda started talking about what kind of career we would want to pursue. I was of the impression that maybe he would be interested in big things given the way this guy looks and carries himself. Anyway, this guy said that after hes done with the computer classes he would be joining Nigeria army, not that there is something wrong with being a soldier but with the condition of our country don't you think we need more of wealth creators than soldiers? I mean its not like we are at war. Anyway, I assume he went into the army while I left for the US for Engineering. Folks this is where the difference b/w the core north and the rest of Nigeria lies; We pursue knowledge, they pursue something else and when that fails them we become the cause of their failure. I'm not saying some of them do not pursue knowledge, all I'm saying, which I believe is self-evident, is that majority of their people would be economically useless in a 21st century ideal capitalist world. I guess in hindsight we all can say - thank God for Nigeria being a miserable third world, else how would you have explained the perennial masacre of some middle belters by cattle rearers. Let me even shed more light on how the south and core north have irreconcilably diverged. When I came here, the first school I went to had no single northerner, in fact I only met a total of 7 Africans (2 yorubas, 1 Igbo, 2 Ghanains, 1 Congo, 1 Rwanda) in my classes and none came from northern Nigeria. So, the question is - if the core north is not showing up where the rest of Africa is converging then where are they showing up? Is it when they loose election that they would show up to maim our corpers? Igbo, Yoruba, South South, and Middle Belt we need to tell ourselves the home-truth which is - Lets cut the core north loose, we have been patient for too long.
Interesting perspective Sam.
And at bolded, the question is how? 1967-70, gave us and idea how it could be done. That blueprint is still tenable even in 21st century Nigeria, and I can bet my live that the outcome will not be the same.

Currently, the situation between North and Southern Nigeria, has a parallel with what obtains in North and South Korea. The Southern Koreans have a well advance economy, and indeed a very skilled and innovative populace, compared to the backward but militant North, who have thousand of missile trained on their illustrious Southern neighbour. But interesting, should skirmishes resume (they are technically still at war), the South will suffer heavy but recoverable losses, especially to their economy and populace, but the North will not survive it.

This scenario fits into the Nigerian equation. Southern Nigeria will not suffer irreparable losses in war with the North, but the North might take forever to recover from such war! However, unlike the South Korean, Southern Nigeria is an jungle of mistrust and suspicion! That explains the inertia!

As for SNC, Northern politicians will not agree to it based on the current argument, unless there is a more compelling reason/event!

When I read comments like this I just shake my head

what does yoruba got to do with the eastern Nigeria ?

are they the ones stopping edo and whatever group u want in ur country ?

What of hausa and fulani, what have they done ? Are yorubas and hausa the only people in the country ?

Are you trying to advertise Biafra for minorities like a commodity or business where you hit a jackpot of oil to go ?

Did Ojukwu propose federalism in Biafra ?

The most tribal people in Nigeria today are Igbos, Quote me on this anytime anyday. Just because you are romancing and begging the South-south today is no mistake. Well at the end of the day it is their choice if they follow or form their own country.

I don't understand this obsession if comparing Igbos with Yoruba everytime, It is a clear case of propaganda and envy. It a big shame though come to think of it.

Look here, I am trying to be nice to Igbos this year because I hate some of the comments i have made here and I am trying to make it up to my igbo brothers and sisters even with Nchara and co continue to post rubbish I would overlook because I see him as a bitter person. DON'T PISS ME OFF !!!

It would not take long before I go back. thanks, lets learn to respect each other and make comments without dragging insults with the yorubas or hausas to it.

Talk about ur eastern region no point insult the yorubas to drive home ur point. Ok !!!
My friend sharrap there and stop talking trash! What exactly is your problem? Do you think you can open your stup.id arse and spill bull crap about Igbo all the time with rebuttal? Have you ever condemn Nagoma, Navfam, Eko Ile, Bluetooth, Seanet, ile-idi, gbawe, ekt_bear, negro_ntn, and host of other for their usual anti-Igbo comments and rhetorics? What about your silly, inane self, that patrol the forum daily dropping anti- Igbo snippets all over the forum like a buffoon. Are you any better? You claim you have put your bigoted live behind you. Apart from you, who else believe your lie?

You bette go and purge yourself of hatred and bigotry before coming to point finger or issue unnecessary threats at any one.

If I were to follow your logic that Igbo are the most tribal on whatever basis your warped and bigoted mind reasoned, can't I also claim that Hausa/Fulani and their Kanuri brothers are all almajiris and terrorist on the basis of happening in Nigeria? Wouldn't that be more apt, more descriptive and fitting than the tribal label you have been going around trying to paint Igbos, especially since the fuel subsidy misadventure led by misguided politicians? Answer me fool!

The fact that some of us allow you to run your mouth like a kanuri goat infected with diarrhea does not mean that we are not aware of your campaign of calumny and bigoted propaganda against the peace loving people of Igbos. Some of us actually ignore you, because we consider you a very childish and irritating nuisance.

Look aboki, stop issuing threats and remove the glove, you really can do more than a dead terrorist!   Is there anyone here even among the Yorubas that you pretend to defend who doesn't know that you are a multifaceted chameleon of no honour? Bring on whatever stup.idity you want to display and lets watch your naked dance of folly.

You are an id!ot my friend, and no one take you and your threats serious anymore! Olodo!

The upbeat recorded by oil prices in the international market since this year has continued to reflect positively on Nigeria’s external reserves which had increased by $1.046 billion.

THISDAY findings showed that the reserves which stood at $32.915 billion as at December 30, 2011, had grown by 3.2 per cent, to $33.961 billion as at January 20. THISDAY check further showed that the reserves had maintained a steady growth since this year.

Oil prices climbed further on Monday as tensions increased over the security of oil shipments from the Persian Gulf. The price of oil had stayed around $100 per barrel in recent weeks on concerns about tanker traffic through the Persian Gulf.

Benchmark oil rose 67 cents to $99 per barrel Monday, while Brent crude rose by 50 cents to $110.36 per barrel in London. The price of Nigeria’s premium crude oil grade- Bonny Light according to findings, stood at $112.2 per barrel in the international market on Monday.

The reserve, which is derived mainly from the proceeds of crude oil production, had peaked at $62.2 billion as at May 2008. The external reserves closed last year at a low level of $32.9 billion, which was 0.6 percent less than its corresponding period of $33.1 billion in 2010.

Experts at the Financial Derivatives Company Limited (FDC) attributed the inability of the reserves to record significant accretion despite the relatively high oil prices, and crude oil production to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s use of the reserves to meet the demand gap of forex at the Wholesale Dutch Auction System (WDAS).

“Due to volatile oil prices and the uncertainty surrounding global markets, reserve growth has yet to pick up. Oil prices experienced significant volatility in 2011 fluctuating between a high of $126.64 per barrel and a low of $93.52 per barrel,” the investment and research firm explained in a report made available to THISDAY.

Commenting on the outlook for oil prices in the international market, it said: “The slowing economic growth and uncertain global economic outlook will increase risks in the oil market as oil price volatility is expected to persist in 2012. The Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) forecasts a further decline in spot prices to $95 per barrel.

“The factors of demand and supply will determine how well crude oil prices will fare in 2012. OPEC has revised downwards its global oil demand forecast to grow by 1.2 percent to 88.87mbpd, and non-OPEC oil output of 5 3.13mbpd. Macroeconomic sentiments coupled with speculative activities will also play a major role in determining crude oil prices.”

Residents of Tsamiyar Boka, Kano, gather outside the house of textile merchant on Tuesday

Security agents on Tuesday killed Uzairu Abba Abdullahi, a textile merchant suspected to be a leader of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, during a five-hour gun duel.

His pregnant wife, who was at his residence in Hotoro, Nassarawa Local Government Area when the team stormed the building, was also shot dead. After the battle, the security men reportedly arrested one of the late businessman’s sons.

A family source described Abdullahi as a 2002 Mass Communication graduate of Bayero University, Kano, but security sources described him as one of the planners and executors of last Friday’s multiple bomb blasts and attacks on Kano.

Our correspondent gathered that the team that killed him comprised soldiers, policemen and security personnel drawn from other forces. The team reportedly stormed the suburb at about midnight following a tip-off that members of the sect were there in large numbers.

THE PUNCH learnt that on reaching the house, Abdulllahi and his men opened fire and the team returned fire. A senior security official told our correspondent that the gunfight raged from 12.30am-5.30am.

Our correspondent reports that while the battle lasted, residents were kept awake for hours as guns boomed. The scene of the incident is close to the farm and horse stable of Chief Deinde Fernandez, who is also Garsan Fulanin Kano, a traditional title in the Kano emirate.

A security official said an army officer who was part of the security operatives was shot in the leg. He was said to be the only victim on the side of the security agents.

The source said, “We had trailed this man for some time. We placed surveillance on him as soon as we received a tip-off that he usually conducted himself in a suspicious manner. So, we decided to pick him up.

“Unfortunately, in the course of the exchange of gunfire, he and his wife were killed. But we captured his son alive.

“The order we got from our Oga (higher authorities) was for us to catch him (Abdullahi) alive so he could be useful in our investigation of Friday’s multiple bomb attacks on security forces and innocent Nigerians. Unfortunately, his resistance led to his death.”

THE PUNCH gathered that before the operatives swooped on the Boko Haram leader, the security authorities had ordered the 9th Squadron Mobile Police, which is close to the scene of the operation, to be on standby.

The early morning Muslim prayers could not be said in the area until about 6.30am, instead of the usual 5.30am.

Efforts made to confirm the incident by newsmen were rebuffed by the army and police authorities who refused to give details of the attack.

The late Abdulahi’s cousin, Alhaji Ali Abdullahi, confirmed the death of the suspect and his wife to reporters.

According to him, the late suspected Boko Haram leader hailed from Gaya Local Government Area in the state. However, he claimed he was an easygoing man who related well with his neighbours. He described the incident leading to his death as “very unfortunate”.

Ali also lamented that all the efforts made by the family to recover his cousin’s corpse and that of his wife, for the purpose of prompt burial, had proved abortive.

Our correspondent gathered that most residents of Hotoro have relocated from the area to safer zones within the metropolis out of the fear that the security agents might return.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has organised a mass burial for unclaimed bodies from the Friday attacks. THE PUNCH gathered that about 50 bodies were buried in Kalebawa village, along Kano-Danbatta road on Tuesday.

A source at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, who pleaded anonymity, said the corpses, which had been at the hospital since the attack, had started to decompose.

Our correspondent saw two vehicles of the mortuary unit, filled with the corpses, leaving the hospital. He later learnt that corpses that had been properly identified remained in the mortuary for their loved ones to claim.

There was no official confirmation of the actual number of the corpses taken for mass burial, however, as all efforts to contact the hospital officials proved abortive.

Also on Tuesday, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, led other emirs on a sympathy visit to the the victims receiving treatment at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital.

Emir Bayero went in company with the Emir of Kazaure, Alhaji Najib Adamu; Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Nuhu Muhammad; and the Sardaunan Kano and immediate past governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau
