Human Development Index: Who is Marginalised?

According to Wikipedia
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite statistic used to rank countries by level of "human development" and separate "very high human development", "high human development", "medium human development", and "low human development" countries. The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education and standards of living for countries worldwide. It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare. It is used to distinguish whether the country is a developed, a developing or an under-developed country, and also to measure the impact of economic policies on quality of life. There are also HDI for states, cities, villages, etc. by local organizations or companies.
HDI combines three dimensions:

1.   A long and healthy life: Life expectancy at birth
2.   Education index: Mean years of schooling and Expected years of schooling
3.   A decent standard of living: GNI per capita (PPP US$)

In the context of marginalization, and realisation of potential in Nigeria, which Zone or ethnic group is currently the better off in Nigeria using those three dimension and who is marginalised?

The state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, stated this during the Imo International Gas Roundtable held at the Concorde Hotel, Owerri with the theme,"Gas to Wealth."

Represented by his deputy, Mr. Jude Agbaso, the governor recalled that in his previous meeting with oil and gas operators, he had pledged to offer free sites and certificate of occupancy to potential investors, facilitate their licences and permits and provide incentives and security to them.

He said that the roundtable offered a platform for deliberating and formulating appropriate gas policies that would ensure enhanced investments, generate employment opportunities, stimulate Imo economy and attract foreign investors.

The state Commissioner for Petroleum and Environment, Mr. Steve Ahaneku, disclosed that Imo State had gas reserves in excess of 7.8 trillion standard cubic feet in Oguta, Ohaji/Egbema and parts of Owerri Municipal.

He said that the Okorocha administration was committed to not only reduce gas flares but ensure that private/public initiatives geared towards the reduction and elimination of flaring would add economic benefits to all communities in the state.

Ahaneku further stated that when the gas resource was further utilised, it would generate products such as electric power, fertiliser, gas-to-liquid and fuels among others.

Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Anthony Eze, noted that the roundtable would provide the opportunity to review gas reserves in the state as a prelude to their utilisation.

Can a " a mere geographical expression" be qualified as a state?

Nigeria is a failed state, anything is touches turns to dust, Ojukwu is better off embalmed in Biafra.

@She-guy, you are wasting your time. Over 70% of the population does not believe in one Nigeria any longer. We are bidding our time waiting for 2015 or when the last straw will come.

you can preach all day if you like. Niger was Zik's baby. Nigeria died with Zik. Today we are strategising on how to quit the corpse Nigeria. Should we implode it from the inside? Should we hope Boko harem will do the job? Should we support united states agenda of splitting Nigeria? Will the hausa/Fulani misadventure in the middle belt tip the scale? Will it happen via SNC?

This are the possibilities. Only naive people will believe that after 50 years we should keep talking about the same thing. Knowing well that: 'to do the same thing the same way and expect a different result is the beginning of insanity." Are we a country of mad people?

the real issue here is that 1. There is political boko harem  represented by Ndume. 2. There is the business Boko Haram which has also been unravelled. But the most dangerous and critical of these boko harams is 3. The boko haram who are driven by religious fanaticism and terrorism.

They are the origInal and dastardly boKo haram whose origin there is no shortage of literature on.

"Nigeria is a mere geographical expression." - Awolowo.

By the statement Awolowo "saw" that Nigeria will continuously struggle to be a country, which each component striving for it's agenda and identity, never truly realising their potential in the geographical enclave.

Awo grudgingly accepted that reality. Ojukwu saw the same thing; he saw the mass murder in the north and the born to rule mentality and realise it won't go away soon but would rather be entrench as a system.

Ojukwu and acted, but Awo for some well discussed obvious reasons reneged on his early believe.

Today here we stand discussing the same thing the saw ages ago.

We are one country in body, but never in soul and spirit: and some will do whatever necessary to sabotage the country. PIB is languishing in the NASS exactly because Niger is a mere geographical expression. Awo and Ojukwu definitely saw this. In action lies the difference.

1,000 Nigerians Killed in Post-election Violence, Say Sultan, CAN

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammed Sa'ad Abubakar III

By Ibrahim Shuaibu and Senator Iroegbu

The post-election violence in parts of the Northern states claimed 1,000 lives, Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammed Sa'ad Abubakar lll, and President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, have said.

The religious leaders spoke Tuesday at an international conference on Islam, Peace Building and Political Engagement, organised by the Bayero University, Kano.

In his address, the Sultan revealed that over 800 Muslims were killed in the post-election violence and called for restraint by religious leaders in discussing such matters to avoid incitement.

He blamed the incidence on ignorance and moral decadence among Nigerians and the elite for what he called the perennial ethno-religious disaffections in the country.

He said it was regrettable that a lot of people no longer have confidence in those governing them, adding that a lot needed to be done to revive the moral value of the citizens.

The Sultan noted that corruption and greed as well as injustice were also threatening the corporate existence of the country, and cautioned religious leaders to prevail on their followers to tow the path of morality and justice.

According to him, “we believe in living together with one another, and we will remain living together as family,” adding that “peace, tolerance are the best ways of having formidable society that will prosper unity.”

In his contribution, Mr. Mark Lifdo, who represented the CAN President at the occasion, disclosed that over 200 Christians lost their lives during the 2011 post-election violence.

He also revealed that 770 churches were burnt and vandalised during the violence.

He lamented that Christians in the North were not allowed to build their worship places, adding that the development does not augur well in a country that wants to promote unity and peace among its citizens.

The CAN president also tasked the Federal Government to tackle the security challenges in the country head on, to give room for rapid socio-economic development.

He also enumerated three main causes of insecurity in the country, which he said included limited access to power, structure and resources, lack of ideology, lack of political system, economic and armed conflict.

According to him, “there is serious need for leaders governing the country to quickly address the issue mentioned accordingly so as to have a united society.”

In his paper, the Keynote Speaker and Chairman of the Presidential Committee on 2011 Post-election Riots, Sheik Ahmed Lemu, lamented that the Nigerian society had lost its moral values, due to greed, injustice and absence of good governance.

Also speaking, former Military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, identified the battle for supremacy and contest for political power as the major factor militating against efforts to sustain national unity and peaceful co-existence in the country.

Gowon noted with concern that efforts by successive administrations to entrench the culture of peace and harmony have remained a mirage due to ethnic polarisation and religious misunderstanding, which he said, are mostly fuelled by those he described as “political charlatans”.

According to him, politics with the attendant struggle for power in the country had deepened suspicion among Nigerians and poisoned national unity and peaceful coexistence.

Ostensibly referring to the Boko Haram uprising in the North-eastern part of the country and other militant groups, the former Head of State stated that at no time was the practice of Islam in Nigeria so challenged by identity crisis than it is now.

Gowon regretted that the creation of states started by his administration had been bastardised to serve as a means of dividing Nigerians instead of uniting them, disclosing that the politics of state creation had triggered the battle for supremacy and the contest for power to the disadvantage of national unity.

He said: “I wish to quickly state that our political journey as a nation has tended to play the ostrich over a few issues that have continued to resurface as thorns in our flesh in our efforts at peace building.

“These issues are constitutional in nature and we have the opportunity to address them now that the Justice Belgore Committee is set to look into the issues requiring constitutional amendment.”

Meanwhile, the immediate past President of Ghana, Dr. John Kufuor, has urged Nigerians to develop spirit of nationalism above the prevailing geopolitical and ethno-religious loyalty, which he noted, has held the country backward.

Kufuor equally called for the grooming of nationalist and visionary leaders, who he noted would be capable of moulding contending groups together instead of encouraging the excesses of ethno-religious champions with chauvinistic interest of promoting geopolitical rivalry.

He gave this charge Tuesday in Abuja at a prelude investiture ceremony of the 4th annual forum of the laureates of Nigeria National Order of Merit (NNOM), award winner’s lecture with the theme “Employment Generation and Attitudinal Change as Indispensable Tools for Good Governance and Rapid National Development”.

He said: “Nigerians should develop a high national consciousness where every Nigerian considers themselves first as Nigerians before anything else, including as Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa and so on.

“The challenge is to accelerate the pace of this development by using institutions of the Federal constitution as a nursery ground for producing leaders who are national in outlook and with a missionary zeal to realise the great potential of a united Nigeria which is apparent.

Speaking in the same vein, President Goodluck Jonathan expressed optimism that cooperation of the laureates could stimulate the nation’s economic growth through employment generation and other economic activities

Monuments and street name are not the only way to honour a man. Beside is there anything to suggest that he was interested in those while he was alive. His losing election in those era could not be dissociated with the frauds that are passed of as election in Nigeria.

In any case only bastard Igbo sons question the love Igbo have for Ojukwu. As for what his traducer think of him, who cares?
