Thanks for the detailed transcript. Congrats again. Rukydiva: After delaying us for about 2 hrs ( heard due to fire /security breech) not certain. I was able to sit though (military security officers let me, and the elderly). Others were asked to move towards carpark to wait.
We eventually went in
Officer: good afternoon DH and I: Good Afternoon
Officer: passports please Me: hands over ( hubbys had visa expiring in march but needed to increase chances based on stories heard even though we have been to US few times) I decided we applied together
Dialogue not working for me and don't remember exact words but was seriously praying he doesn't ask if I was preggy.
*****If he did, I will say Yes. If he asked if I wanted to have baby there, I will say most likely not. If he ask why, I will say I need family around me and they are based in Naija***** this was my plan though didnt want to lie so I prayed he dosent ask.
Newyas was BI/B2 and vacation is the reason. He asked where we were going. We said Washington then vegas. ( hubs answered)
Asked what he does and where he works- hubbs responded (he's a finance person. officer then made a joke) . Asked why hubs traveled more and without me, I chipped in "I wonder " hubs now explained some were official .lol he's been like 3 times more than me
Asked me what I do- said self employed, baker. He asked staff strength, I said 3. Me being No 1 and smiled.
He says I was held back the last time that how did I get back. ( I used a bit of emotions here) and said it was very stressful, business was on lockdown, hubs was back home, my embassy wasn't forthcoming with info as regards the evacuation. That I was so glad I got one eventually at an extra cost of 1500 which I didn't mind --- officer then chips in saying " sure you were glad to be back. Hubby chips in that that was the most important.
He asked if we had kids, we said No and he gave the surprise look with smiles( note: been married for a while).
He then asked how my business is. I responded saying really slow and using hand gestures .
Then he says pick up your passports in a few days.
Other observations.... I was praying not to go to a particular Officer- he is white and skinny. His voice was kina loud and we a could hear convos btw pple. Only that you can't laugh cos you don't known how yours will be . Lol.
He had refused some but gave last 2 couples before us but the questioning nobi here( he spends time asking and asking).
Our interviewer was a chubby friendly guy. He spent some time with the elderly woman before us due to language barrier( he took her passport and gave mama the paper, mama say make im return her passport o) officer explained that her visa will be ready in a few days . Mama say thanks and left. We were next.
Observation:- Friendly officers dont mean they will grant visas o. Dont fall for that trap. I have also learnt to answer with short responses o. So u don't say what they didn't not ask and put yourself in trouble.
Then try not to be nervous even though you sometimes can't help it. Nervousness could be misconstrued for not being honest. Try to say at the back of your mind that it's not do or die .
All the best! |

Kettlecorn: Whatever dude. I'm not part of the echo chamber/try your luck gang that doesn't and cannot think things through thoroughly. And this is not derailing, it is actually very germaine to the topic of this thread. Those that can have deciphered the message which is that the pandemic has indeed indirectly made getting a visa more difficult right now and will make better preparations if they indeed have a strong reason to go for an interview at this time. I agree that a pandemic may make getting visas especially for "tourist purpose" difficult. Even though I don't think same applies for student visas. I guess there are currently little/no student visa appointments though, maybe until another semester is approaching. |

Infiosa: Finding resume on a travellers may be flagged as a red flag but business cards should not attract any form of suspicion. From my personal experience, I have shown my business card to the immigration officers at the POEs on different occasions. In fact, it was indeed a convincing proof that I have strong tie to return to the home country. The mentioned excuses for denial of entry at the POE are circumstantial not travel restrictions on non-citizens. The only and most updated requirement for non US citizens is Convid 19 negative test. I will appreciate if you can make a reference, at least we are all because of necessary information. Exactly! B1 visa, specifically, is a business visa!! My aim, too, is to ensure correct info is being put forward |

Kettlecorn: Your answers are there too.
Check out this interview testament from a student that had ben previously denied a visa but went ahead to attend remotely. He was ultimately successful: Me: I would be going to continue by undergraduate degree in biology at Edward Waters college in Florida. I started taking classes for the fall semester in Nigeria because of the pandemic and ended with a 4.0 GPA, I have my result with me. V.O: wow, 4.0, that's great. (Then, Takes a look at my I-20), oh I can see you have a full ride, that's great. You are right! However, the outcome of visas can go several ways. Some never attended any remote learning and had their visas approved. Some started remote learning and was denied. In my opinion, attending remotely is not the reason why anyone will be approved. Except your school is still strictly online, Pandemic will not be a reason why someone with a valid visa especially a student will be deny entry, except there are other red flags. |
Travel › Re: USA Visit Visa Part 4 by pointednose: 11:08am On Jan 30, 2021 |
Kettlecorn: Everyone is guaranteed entry if you have a valid visa, and COVID is not being used at any POE to deny entry This is so far from the truth, it is not even funny. Only US citizens are "eventually" guaranteed entry into the country. They can be detained and delayed but will be let in. Everyone else, including permanent residents can and have been denied entry in the past. A visa holder has no guaranteed entry. The decision is up to the immigration officer and they can deny entry without giving you a reason. If you know your way around, you can start an appeals process right there, but it is a very convoluted process and almost impossible without prior legal representation arrangement. Its generally true that a visa does not guarantee entry into the US, but let's put this in context. The issue I personally responded to is the fact that students and other non-essential travels are not encouraged or allowed to travel. I know so many people who have visited the US in the last couple of weeks/months. This is a place where people come for info, so I don't want anyone to think he or she cannot apply for a visa cos its a non-essential trip. Being granted a visa is another subject matter, which is at the call of the consular officer. |
Travel › Re: USA Visit Visa Part 4 by pointednose: 11:03am On Jan 30, 2021 |
Kettlecorn: Getting a student visa has always been relatively more difficult from Nigeria because of the high level of japa tendencies of our citizens. Adding a pandemic to the mix has only compounded issues. You cannot deny the fact that it is even more difficult with the pandemic. My point is that even when it is clear that conditions are not ideal and the likelihood of being denied is even higher, people are still trying their luck. You have to be smart to succeed. The people that I know that started the online option have the backing of their schools which have already made representation to the State department so that after their first year, they will easily be granted a visa. There are options out there. You will only look desperate if you try to push through now. Level of denial is currently high. Most schools are operating remotely even when on campus so what is the benefit of going there in person? Even visiting friends and family is a long shot and trying your luck. How can you justify a vacation when you need to quarantine for 10 days upon entry? The official policy is that only essential travel is encouraged. The only people guaranteed entry are citizens and permanent residents and they are subject to testing and quarantine. I don't know where this is coming from but A LOT Of people have gotten student visas and have travelled to the US in the last couple of weeks. Even visitors on B1/B2 visas are travelling already. |

quincynyc: Lol it is well o May God help us. Any idea on d Canada own then? Is it d same process with birthing in the States? What do you mean by if its the same process? You apply for a Canadian visa to get one. And its a very different process that requires documentation majorly. No physical interview like that of the US. |

sandraigho: My cousin went today and was denied. The CO tackled her as she had a baby in the US 2yrs ago and got a discount from the hospital. She has a very good travel history and this was her 3rd time renewing her US visa Abuja or Lagos? Is this her first time of renewing after that baby she had 2 years ago? Was this in Lagos or Abuja? What is her reason for applying for visa now? Which state did she give birth? And how much did she pay for birthing? Maybe if you can get a transcript (details of how the interview went, the questions and her responses) may help us dissect it better. |
