Op Make sure you locate that girl's father and hear his side of the story. There's the danger of a single story. Don't ever work on a single narrative especially from women who love to play the victim card. You might be shocked when you hear the man's side. If the man admits he's wrong to have abandoned them, then you can go in peace knowing he got served. Until then, blood is blood, no stepfather can ever be a father. Acknowledge the real father and hear him out.

Please get this clear
Your father is the one that take care of u not the one who gave birth to you
What if you were taken away from your father against his wishes, and all his efforts to relate with you were frustrated?

Do you know we are in an era where women now claim ownership of children? Remember the case of FFK and his wife Precious? Precious was claiming FFK should release her babies to her.

Also, consider the girls that his previous wives had with him. It is unlikely that FFK would have ignored his financial obligations to them since they were the only children he had then. But when the ladies married, FFK was not present at the events.

This could not have been without the influence of the ladies' mothers. One thing I know and have observed in my marriage is that, whether in marriage or in divorce, no woman would ever want the child to like the father than them. On average, women rival their husbands when it comes to children'shows of love, affection, and relationships with parents.

The 9 months pregnancy they carry (the pain of which is inestimable though) makes them to perceive fathers merely as free sperm donors. In the event of divorce, you will hear things like "S/he is my baby"; "leave my baby for me"; "give me my baby" etc.

In courts, they win the babies to their side in 99% of cases, since the courts have taken it as a norm to grant them custody of children, even in cases where the wife is more occupationally engaged than the husband.Today, in a divorce case between a couple of husband ( a teacher) and wife( a banker), the court will more likely grant the child's custody to the banker-wife, even when the children are fairly grown up to around 12 years.

It is because of this current trend of female-invested custody of children that I would advise the OP to try to see the lady's biological father. Doing this requires his wisdom. He had to convince the girl to approve his going alone to see her father .

If he so gets her approval and eventually meets the father, he should sympathize with the father no matter his understanding of the father's side of the story. Before leaving the father's place, he should discuss how he would make an effort to convince the daughter to pay him a visit after their marriage.

If he can do this, I'm sure the man in question would appreciate his wisdom and bless his union with his daughter.

Later in their marriage, he could be the person that would reunite the girl (after becoming her husband) with her father, and the girl could receive her father's blessing too.

My dearie what's your own with this matter it will surprise you, your marriage may not hold again. Why open old wounds so you're the one to make the useless father a responsible man. Face what face you trust your fiancee and go ahead and honor the step dad that's in her life and have been responsible for her what's your business with what happened even after she has told you not to bother?. More spending sef if you don't face front and focus on important thing already a man is in the house is the step-dad not a man so what are you looking for? Well if you push further you will find what you're looking for!

My Fiancee told me about how her biological dad abandoned her and her mum after getting her mum pregnant.

Her mum later married another man who adopted her as his child.

Now she's grown and I've proposed to her, I wanted to go for her official introduction and list collection.

Would it not be nice to hear the biological father's opinion? Should I just ignore the fact that the man is still alive and proceed with the marriage arrangement?

Although she said I should not bother about that, but this is Nigeria and as an Akwa Ibomite I don't think it's proper. Although she's against me trying to find out about the man's opinion. Should I care?

What can you say about this?

Note: she only told me that the man abandoned them, but what if it was her mum that actually took her away?

I appreciate all you comments so far, but I see many of you ignoring traditions and the points I raised because of emotions.

Have you not seen where person was mandated to pay bride price twice either because of one or two mistakes?

That's the girl's story, what if they all lied to her and she grew up with it? What happens if the tradition doesn't permit another man to collect bride price of a girl whose father is still alive?

Please drop emotions and be more critical in this matter I beg you guys. I've heard of a scenerio where they have to change the venue of a traditional marriage simple because it wasn't supposed to be held at the place it was holding then.

Are we simply trashing the traditions when indeed the bride price follows the tradition?

Oga dem don advice you. You clearly wanted someone to support your idea but majority have adviced otherwise. my question to you, do you want a peaceful home? If your answer is yes, please my brother kindly carry on with the wedding plans. But if you choose to dive into the ocean searching for egoistic quest to ''follow tradition'' , my bro, you no go fit fight this battle finish.

Abeg make we think or ask person wey dey advance for his own opinion before we comment.

What if tomorrow now, they said because of A wasn't supposed to be A, I have to come and pay goat and Elon musk before this and that?

If you ask me, I think the end of all this needs to start with women saying no more to the bride-pride tradition altogether. The female will continue to remain a bought item to the bulk of these until then. undecided

Dear OP,

Calm down and listen to my counsel. I assume you are a Christian since you say you come from Akwa Ibom. Do you attend a church? If you do then

1- Meet the elders of the church and ask for counsel from experienced ones. Many of our elderly men and women have seen a lot in life and you will be surprised some have even come across the same exact type of scenario. If it is possible to find elders in church who happen to come from that lady's area or understand their native law and customs that will be even better. Let them guide you on what to do.

2- If you are not a regular church goer no problem. Try to find elders from your lady's area. Find out from them. How are marriages transacted? What are the customary rites and traditions as applicable in that part of the country. In short get someone to fully advise you.

3- Does the said lady, your fiancee have an elder brother or an older blood relative the mother and daughter are on good terms with who can stand in as the father? If there is such a person, try to take advantage of that.

Why am I saying all these? You see you don't approach this thing with emotions. You approach it with facts and we face reality.

This is Nigeria and this is Africa. Maybe if you were living abroad you can do as you like but the fact is family still has a lot to do with this matter of marriage.

Cultures and customs vary from tribe to tribe. What some tribes may condone other tribes may not. For instance some cultures will find it acceptable for the stepfather to take the place of the father figure. If that is the case no problem.

Some other cultures will not accept that. They will insist that the biological father must be present at the wedding even if the man is a deadbeat father or a drunkard.

Yes I know it is hard but that is the reality with some customs. If the biological father did not pay the mother's bride price or dowry in some cases he will not be allowed to collect the bride price, rather it will go to the mother's people.

Again there are reasons why I am calmly pointing out all these things. It is to avoid any booby trap or landmines in future. This is because like I said earlier we marry families here in Africa not just the individual -- this is the truth whether we like it or not.

Again it depends on the family. How close are they to the hometown, native laws and customs etc.

If the lady and her mother don't really fraternize with them, that might make things easier for you.

But in a case where the lady and her mother are close to the home front, frequent the village etc. It can become an issue if it is not handled with wisdom.

I understand how many of the ladies feel. Why should a man who abandoned them suddenly show up on the day of wedding and want to collect bride price?

It is human to feel that way. However everyone came into this world through the channel of a man and woman. God chose your parents in the sense that you were born through them.

There are spiritual realities tied to all these things. What you really need is Wisdom that is why I said seek for counsel.

It is also true that in some cases though not all, the women are only telling their side of the story and what suits them. It may not be the truth.

One may find out that the father is not a bad man after all but the mother cut the children off from him deliberately and permanently. They then raise the kids to hate the man. Nobody can deny such cases occur.

I don't know the implications of paying bride price to both the biological and step father. You may need to get counsel from both elders and pastors who come from that area/tribe to be well informed.

The truth is this -- there is a blessing that comes to you when the father of the woman you married gives his consent to your union.

Human beings are very deep and you want to avoid a case where what happened to your fiancee's parents repeats itself in your union.

I also strongly advise you to get a pastor to pray for you and break any curse in the lineage or any negative thing.

We don't do things out of emotions. We try our best to do what is right. We have seen cases of absentee fathers who abandoned the mother and children.

Yet when it was time to get married the children still forgave him and allowed him stand in on the day of wedding.

One of my in-laws faced a similar predicament. He father separated from his mother and did not care for his son throughout till the boy became a graduate.

But the fellow grew up, became something in life and still went after his father and took care of him though he did not deserve it. Today he has been mightily blessed and is doing well.

The summary and the bottom line is this. If possible seek for counsel from pastors and elders who are very familiar with that part of the country.

They will know what to do and advise your accordingly. Ask them is it possible to give bride price to both fathers?

Don't worry even if the absentee fathers had zero contribution to her life. You are not doing it just for him. You want to attract divine favour from God.

If they say no, fine. If they say yes,let them direct you.

Also you need good counsel because an absentee father who is deadbeat might decide to take advantage of you and start to live off you and be billing you.

To avoid all that ask for advice. If the elders who knows the customs of that area say you may not need to bring him into the picture then let the matter lie.

Also ask the elders in your family to carry out discreet investigation per the girl, her father and mother.

Trust me there are people who know what to do in such cases. All this is to avoid walking into a minefield or booby traps from either your fiancee, her mother or her biological father in the future.

Again let me summarize it for you. You don't have enough information to make a decision. Seek for counsel! God will direct your way. It is well.

My brother i have a similar case but i will talk about that later. No one pray or wish this type of situation come to his or her home, but when it happens what do you do? It is indeed a flies perched on a scrotum. In my place, before a mature man marries ( if you know you know), he will send someone or an elder to go for a research about the girl's family and get facts about the place and the compound if they have anything that one should avoid or be informed abut just in case of tomorrow. You are not been inquisitive but its a normal thing to do, to have a peaceful and blessed home without rancor in the nearest future. If the girl's real dad is alive ( i dont know what caused the split between the mum and dad) but i would suggest you go deep to find so you use wisdom to follow it at the end. Please find out on your own now before its too late to know if there is anything to avoid from the family and save your own head too. Some homes are pretty on the surface but deep down there is a mess prospective suitors should not inherit. If you marry the lady today, you start your own family. Make sure you settle everything to avoid any problems. A man cannot be alive and someone come to marry his daughter without asking about the real father in law even is except he is incapacitated or mentally derailed. Do whatever your mind tells you to do, that is the correct thing bro do not follow most advise here you might miss road. Get your facts well and do the right thing to appease the gods and have a peaceful home.

Chairman what I think you should be worried about is if your new wife does the same thing to you. Her mother is already an expert on how to hide her children from their biological father. You better go tho the biological father and find out the truth. Marriage is not boyfriend girlfriend better think well before you come to Nairaland in few years and start complaining about how your wife cut you off from your children. A bad tree does not bear good fruit be wise.

Thank you all for your excellent contributions. Please note the following:

1. They said the man abandoned them, but what if it's not actually what happened, so let's not be emotional.

2. I'm not paying the bride price to the biological father, but there should be an understanding between both fathers at this point. because if the child was taken away from the man or if he had acted as a child then, both parents can come to an understanding so that my wife won't hurt any part of the tradition in the course of our marriage.

3. I know that my mother inlaw would be angry, but I still feel it's my right to know. What if something bad happens to my wife because she married in a way that violates her tradition (give Caeser things to Caesar)

4. I'm doing this for my fiancee not me, because as far as I've paid my bride price nothing can come to me, but if anything comes to my wife, it automatically affects me. So it's not just her and her mum's business.

Thank you as you put this thoughts into consideration as well.

Please excuse typos

A father SHOULD be a FATHER in ALL weather not waiting for an entitlement he doesn't deserve after period/years of negligence.

If he was barred at first, he should maintain the status and not come out to fight after what he didn't labor for. A lot needs to be changed in our dear continent.

Sir as far they acknowledge that man as the biological father and he is still alive. He is the only one mandated to handover his daughter for marriage as tradition demands.

satelliteDISH:
This is a very tough one.
The girls mother is very bitter. She has been nursing that bitterness all her life since she got pregnant. She doesn't want the man that got her pregnant and abandoned her to reap from the gains that come through the girl.
That is her revenge. To her, that is justice served.

To go see the biological father might not go down well with your mother in law and she will hate you for this.
Since your fiancee and her mother have disowned the man. They have acknowledged the step father as their father and husband, go and honour the step father with the necessary traditional items.

The biological father cannot come out of the blues and reap from where he didn't invest for over 20+ years of the girls life. It is an unfair trade.

To avoid story that touch, make sure you see her biological dad. Even if he is late, make sure you see his relatives.
This will safe you from entering a trap you know nothing about.

Two humans came together to give birth to her. Make sure you get the consent of both.

Best wishes to you and yours.

All this you spewed here is indulging dereliction of fatherly responsibility. Your culture is a very faulty one created by a set of chauvinistic men who believed that men can do no wrong no matter the magnitude of wrongs they are caught in.

A father is not a sperm donor. Otherwise, this sets societies back. Somebody makes a mess and yet receives an honour medal because culture dictates so. Get over this rubbish culture now!

An irresponsible man must not be handed the honour badge of fatherhood. Fatherhood without responsibility is criminality. You have a criminal culture I must say. sad
the culture punishes a absent father, if he didnt pay bride price for the girl's mother, on the day of the girl's marriage the father is invited but he wont recieve the bride price as the family of the mother of the girl will claim there own bride price therefore the father of the girl walks with nearly nothing but the most important thing the son in law would have seen and meant the biological father of the girl
