For context:

This N225 naira per KPH is about 15 cents per kilowatt hour. The minimum wage in Nigeria is N30,000 monthly

North Dakota pays about 10 cents per kilowatt hour. Minimum wage in North Dakota is $7.25 per hour (N1.3 million naira monthly).

Texas pays about 15 cents per kilowatt hour. Minimum wage in Texas is $7.25 per hour (N1.3 million naira monthly).

Where is that useless mannabbq hellinus and frestuffng and other moronic government propaganda agent on Nairaland?

Come and explain to Nigerians why this increase in hardship by the government is ok given the above analysis

He told us- demons were involved may be the DISCOS and now, they think by increasing Tariff, then DISCOS will perform! A Big Fat Lies!
You don't increase rates, when the Organisation is not performing!
It will end in shame- for more Darkness for the Masses!

How many Nigerians can afford that in Nigeria?

Is that the solution for all Nigerians?
There are scalable off-grid power solutions in existence worldwide. All it takes is to domesticate these technologies back in Nigeria. There are scalable solutions for homes and communities with mini-hydro, wind turbines, solar, or hybrid wind turbines that are combined with solar, etc.

Even at that, I have read testimonials online from some folks in Nigeria who do not regret going off-grid as they do not have to pay any power company for electricity.

So, you don't want the Gencos and Discos to recover their costs?

The government is owing the Gencos and Discos $1.2b and 1.3tr Naira respectively. Government has no money to be subsidizing power.

If you really want power, you must be ready to.pay the price for getting.

Even in Freetown, nothing is free.

Government should go further snd deregulate the price they charge. That is what revolutionized the telecom sector.

MTN and Econet charged N50/minute while MTEL charged 22/minute. Mtn and Econet pumped billions of dollars into expanding their phone network while Mtel which charged people friendly prices went out of business.

The nation needs tens of billions of dollars of investment in electricity generation but as long as government keeps fixing the price, it would scare off the MTNs and Econets of the electricity business from doing their magic.

We now enjoy cheap calling costs. The same would also happen in the power sector.

Oga shut up your dirty mouth jare...do you know the years and years of pain that has been cost by a lack of power. The government doesn't have money for electrical subsidy but are busy with useless governmental expenditures and financing extravagantly..do you think Nigerians are rich people . Since this useless government got in all they have been doing is raising things up and increasing the suffering of the people without relief of any kind... I'm sure you voted for the tyrant that's why you are here saying crap...come for me I'm here waiting..punk

At what cost?

Can a person earning 35k afford it?

Isn't it too much....over 300% increment why? Not like power is even constant

Power is constant in my area o. At least 20 hrs in a day, we have light except on grid collapse or major repairs and maintenance.

You are the illiterate here!
Industries are labelled in band A category
The common man is the consumer & will be made to pay for their products. They are going to factor in this increase in their cost of production & the common man on the street will be made to pay for it dummy!

What does American minimum wage have to do with pricing? Simply stating power should be cheaper using comparison energy prices in America is sufficient.

All those in the electricity chain must charge a cost reflective rate to cover expenses. They can't underprice because salaries are low. It does not work that way.

I too did my findings and also queried the high price.

However, I am not an expert in the industry so won't speak like one. I, however suspect that issues line creaky infrastructure, insufficient competition and so on have roles to play.

Charging cost reflective pricing is a step in the right direction. The present blackouts are due to the huge debts of $1.2b owed the gencos and N1.3tr owed the Discos by the government.

Government should go further and fully deregulate the price.

You people haven't learnt anything from the petrol subsidy issue and the naira floatation issue. You have no sense, also, of pacing and timing in policy making bearing in mind the travails of the population.

No worries.
Life has a way of eventually teaching everyone.

Enjoy.

How much is electricity in other west African countries compared to Nigeria? All those countries that do 24hrs go and find out the cost? You want comfort but you don't want to pay. Will Tinubu use his teeth to provide power? What's important is availability. Then cut your coat according to your size. If the poor want 24hours power then let them work for it. Nigerians need to be productive. Government's strategy is to use the rich to subsidize the poor which makes sense.

The highwayman will have his knife to your throat ready to slice it open and you will be egging him on, praising him, and justifying his actions.

After all, he reasonably has no choice but to slice your throat. How else will he earn a livelihood ?

Ride on.

One of the biggest error about life is that, as a person, u are made to suffer simply because of the f00lishness & decisions of others. This alone will never make humans to have a balanced life. When majority are stupid, the right thinking ones will still be made to suffer. Quite unfair

Surely it has to be that you are being paid a stipend to write this obnoxious daft nonsense?

As others have pointed out, do you not realize that, just as with the petrol subsidy issue, this will have a ripple effect on the prices of daily goods and services?

Yes, including those used by poor men?

What is wrong with you people? What makes you so desperate to defend your oppressors? Is there foam in your head?

How do you know the set of people will not be affected?

I live in an area that is on band A, and I'm going to be affected..

I just moved to the estate just because of their constant light, and majority of the people who are there ran to the estate, because of the 20hrs electricity we enjoyed..

This will allow alot of customers to bypass their meter with reckless abandon...

We know electricity is not cheap, but government should first of all people every measures in place to make sure that majority of her citizens are good before implementing policies that will kill them. The minimum wage is still stagnant and alot in increased is being perfected to completely kill the poor..

Even my company will also be affected, I'm a facility manager, and the PHCN is what we solely rely on, to cut cost on the diesel usage in all our malls, as we also fall under the band A category

Band B-E still dey N66/KWh!

How many of Una dey band A that uses minimum of 20 hours electricity per day?

Band A are those who uses minimum of 20 hours electricity per day! Only the pricing of these people were increased! Many people in band A were downgraded to Band B.

Band B uses minimum of 16 hours electricity per day!

Band C uses minimum of 12 hours daily!

Band D uses a minimum of 8 hours daily!

Band E uses a minimum of 4 hours daily!
If you want to hide something from an African put it in a book. Many of them will never find it.

The increment affects only those in Band A, enjoying at least 20hrs per day. But the Ibo Op made it look like it affects all power consumers in Nigeria. This is a form of progressive tax where the rich is made to pay more so the poor will benefit somehow. Just leave them alone. It's hatred for Tinubu that will lead some people to early grave.

Nigerians are now paying more than their US counterparts, while earning 43 times less. So as a Nigerian you pay more than someone earning 4300% your salary

In the initial stages of transition from controlled to free markets, prices tend to be high. When NITEL/MTEL was the sole monopoly for telecoms, prices were subsidized and low. Very few Nigerians had phones. When the market was privatized and deregulated, MTN started with a price of 50K per simcard, which was 500% of MTEL prices.

So prices will come down. That's how free markets work.

Good Luck to Nigeria.
