Health › Panic In Benue As Strange Disease Kills Victims Within 48hrs by Premiumwriter(op): 3:11pm On Feb 07, 2020 |
Residents of Benue State are having a horrible experience with a strange disease which is ravaging some communities in the state. The worse hit victims live in areas in Oye-Obi local government area of the state where 15 deaths have been recorded and 104 others infected since the mystery disease broke out on January 29, 2020. LEADERSHIP Friday learnt that the survival chances of those infected are very slim because they always die within 48 hours and the symptoms manifest in the form of swollen stomach, legs, internal heat, vomiting, and diarrhoea. The ailment, which cure and treatment are yet to be discovered by Nigeria’s health authorities, broke out as the country battles the Lassa fever scourge and coronavirus is sending shockwaves across the globe. The unknown disease outbreak in Benue and its devastating effects on the people was brought to the notice of the Senate yesterday by Senator Abba Moro (PDP – Benue South) during plenary. Consequently, the lawmakers directed the Federal Ministry of Health to immediately mobilise focal persons to the affected communities to investigate and ascertain the nature of the disease. The Senate also ordered the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to promptly put up surveillance to contain the disease, ensure the treatment of victims and protect others from contacting it. These resolutions were reached after the consideration of a motion brought on the floor by Senator Moro. Moro had told the Senate that the first victims of the epidemic outbreak were Happiness Ogbo, Onajobi Ogbedu, Wisdom Agwo, Andy Edu, all of whom died 48 hours after contacting the yet to be diagnosed disease by health authorities and medical experts in Benue State. He added that the symptoms of the disease were headache, internal heat, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach ache, weakness of the body and swollen stomach. Senator Moro said: “As at Monday, February 3, 2020, the number of persons affected by the strange epidemic had risen to 104 Source: https://leadership.ng/2020/02/07/panic-in-benue-as-strange-disease-kills-victims-within-48hrs/ |

doncox: Very scary. My question is, how did this virus get born sef? Where has it been since forever or was it cloned? Please those with knowledge of bacteria and virus should tell us more. the virus has been around. It is however only in the body of animals not humans. Just like Ebola has been with bat and the HIV with the primates. It is when human eat these animals when they are not properly cooked that the virus can cross to the human body and start manifesting, then we become aware of them. There are many potential sicknesses and deadlier diseases we have are not aware of. We humans are sitting on a time bomb. When they cross over into our system then we'll know them. Take for instance, Ebola is now out of the human race. This does not mean it is out of the earth. It's still there waiting to be triggered again. |

Register your NGO then lobby for the decriminalisation of LGBT activities. You cannot go in guns blazing to bully the CAC into registering an organisation that’s seeks to promote actions that are deemed criminal in Nigeria.
All around the world, LGBT guys are bullies and troublemakers. You dare not hold contrary opinions if you don’t want to lose your job or business. They ask for tolerance but are unrepentantly intolerant. thta is just one thing with them gay people. where does their own right end? they just want to live and not let us live. you can't have an opinion that is contrary to theirs. i wonder when the world will wake up to this canker worms eating away our humanity. |

dumodust: We learnt it in and out of classrooms... And yes, I write my mother tongue too. English is also not a classroom affair, it's all around us. The English in our classrooms is a colonial creation and only serves the purpose of bridging people with diverse cultures and languages not to subdue our own into oblivion. The Chinese speak Chinese, the Germans German, even English in the UK is diverse, the Scottish and Irish accents are incredible but they wear it proudly. English is our vernacular, nobody said you should not know English but my mother tongue is not beneath it. I consider myself trilingual- Igbo, pidgin, English in that order you guys keep making points that does not correlate with the situations in Nigeria. How many of the countries you mentioned above have as many languages as Nigeria? In Benue State alone we have more than 10 languages. In just a state. Should a child be taught all of these languages in order to be able to communicate with others or be allowed to master a single language with which he can communicate with not only those in his immediate surroundings but also with the world? Look at the internet today, a lot of friction makes it almost impossible for Indians and Chinese to do business because of they don't understand English. Any freelancer here can tell you this. Just because you're good on English, your local language and pidgin doesn't mean everyone will be. And how about the igbo man leaving in Lagos? Should special igbo curriculum be made for the kids? Language is not our only culture. If you want your kids to be able to speak your mother tongue, make special arrangements for it. Speak it to them, teach them while they are at home. Or even enroll them in igbo schools (if anyone ever comes up with such ideas) Let it be that you promote the language you love. It shouldn't be a national problem or a formal school problem because that will create more friction than you can imagine. Let your mother tongue be something your kids picks up from you at home. (how often do you personally prompt your kids to speak your local dialect at home or even speak it to them?). This is where the language get lost. It's not in school that they lose the language. I've seen many parents encourage their kids to speak English or even speak English with their kids at home. This is good but if you are concerned about your mother tongue then it's bad. It's however very bad if we want the government to encourage local dialect as much as they encourage the teaching of English. It'll bring more disunity, poor bonding and lack of communication, confidence and opportunity |

dumodust: He's very wrong and very much misguided and your supporting argument makes no sense. Children are able to absorb more than one language during their formative years. I'm a product of that multilingual system and I speak my native tongue, English and pidgin fluently and able to switch in several appropriate scenarios without even noticing that I am as a result of my upbringing. Your mother tongue is your mother tongue, an essential part of your identity and culture... No one respects you for totally adopting another man's culture. And referring to native languages as for poor people is derogatory and I am sure this guy doesn't have much coins in his pocket. English is our vernacular was it in the four walls of the classroom you learnt pidgin English and your mother language? |

mvem: Japanese and Chinese because of pride speak their own language...you don't see Japanese prime minister speak English in the UN meeting even if he can. See! igbo is dying. I see many Igbo youths that can't speak igbo, forming phonetics. Unlike Hausa and Yoruba that is taught from childhood. Many igbo parents sometimes willingly refuse teaching Igbo to their kids because they want them to appear more western or civilized which is very wrong. See many igbo brought ups in Lagos, Kaduna, kano etc can't speak igbo. In the North even in official setting they joyfully speak their hausa but in the east it is not the case. I don't know why many igbos sometimes pretend they can't speak igbo and this is rampant among young youths and those slay Queens...The language will slowly die with this mentality erasing our culture. We should encourage igbo to be spoken and no one should be shy to speak it. We igbos always try to appear more western which in the long run will affect our heritage. are they as diverse as we are? does japan or china have over 250 languages within its boundaries? if we all encourage our local languages over english then how should the country be governed? if buhari today can only speak fulani fluently and osibanjo only yoruba how are they going to communicate with each other and moreover the over 250 other ethnic groups? and should the government make provisions for maths, biology, chemistry to be translated into the over 250 ethnic groups individually? the problem of choosing to teach in our local language will bring far more problem and disunity than the common english. |

Bros nigeria is not even a country. it's just a land filled with different trees nonsense codemaniacs: Nigeria is not a multicultural nation.
it is a british created country that has at least 250 countries within it.
when you are in the SE in igbo speaking states you should speak or learn to speak igbo because the SE is practically an igbo country,
when you are in the SW in yoruba speaking states you should speak or learn to speak yoruba because the SW is practically a yoruba country.
what you are promoting is disrespectful to this ethnic nations.
Nigeria can never ever be united.
you can't choose an ethnic language over the other because you don't expect Yorubas to make igbo/hausa/efik language the "unifying language" of the SW.
you can't get jobs in germany without learning german. many other countries make it priority to learn their language before you can get a job there. |

tobstarizhia: I am strongly against pidgin being spoken in school, or anything different from the language that is taught. Like it or not, Nigeria is a multicultural entity, and as such we need a unifying lingua franca to better understand one another. Hence English. It annoys me when I see people speaking the English poorly. middle class citizens mind you, not necessarily the poor. Pidgin or vernacular is a poor man's language, and the sooner we stop representing that in all our media the better. Improving our mother tongue is also commendable. nothing wrong in that. In a class room setting where English is the language that is being taught, any other language should not be tolerated. the only person that seems to be making any sense on this thread. nigeria is a multicultural nation with more than 250 ethnic groups and language. we need a unifying language and of course we cannot choose hausa, yoruba or any of the other ethnic group over the other. hence english. don't know why some people tend to criticize the adoption of english |

Now I'm hearing with my left ear that the deadly respiratory infection known as Corona virus which started in Wuhan, China MAY actually be closer to us in Nigeria than we had imagined. It is already in Kenya, Ivory Coast and Ethiopia. And come February 2, hundreds if not thousands of Chinese resident in Nigeria who went home for their Lunar new year will start returning to Naija. With our govt announcing Visa-On-Arrival policy plus the porous nature of our land borders, not forgetting the general governmentlessness in the land,
How prepared are we to tackle this deadly disease?
How does the Corona virus spread? What are the symptoms? What are the preventive measures we need to take to avoid the virus? who you com de ask all these questions? |

emmysolo2001: Good evening everyone.
So I'm an aspiring medical student. I've been at home since 2016 till date. I wrote JAMB 4 Times. The first score was 196, second was 203, third was 210 and I worked harder and got 218 this year.
Yes it is not enough because I'm an average student hoping to study pharmacy in university of Uyo but I got my first admission from Obong University Uyo to study biochemistry and I agreed but honestly I hate the course. It has no relationship with what I want to do.
Now I'm scared of never getting to study what I really want.
Is there anyway I can study pharmacy because I can't do transfer and change my course?
Or do I write jamb again? my story is very similar to yours. I wrote jamb 3 times for medicine. On the third try I was given physiology. I accepted it since I was tired of staying at home and partly for fear of not getting another admission if I had rejected it. I went to school. I'm in 200l now. But I wrote jamb last year again. Got a very high score and have been admitted for medicine. Bottomline is, get that admission. Go to school. Study hard, then write another jamb again. It's way easier to score higher that way because most of the things they will teach you in 100l is basically sec skul work. So you'll get the chance to go over those things again. Above all, work hard towards it. |
