Thats the bug question, if they came from the same place they would have seen themselves as one people because there obviously weren't 30-40 million Igbo people with dozens of subgroups 3 thousand years ago. this is sad, but we have to live with it, and deal with it. each time i go to the US, i am always selected at security checks in the airports for more security search. i take it, my fellow nigerians caused it, i bear it. no wahala.

i have always spoken against violence in whatever form. i am a firm believer of the truth that violence begets violence and once blood is shed . . .a vicious cycle of blood shed and hatred is started. that is why I disregard the tactics of the niger-delta ''freedom fighters'' . there is no justification for violence. this violence completely tainted ken's near perfect campaign for the rights of niger-delta people and put his intergrity to disrepute.

and for shell, i dont think they are naive to believe they can buy peace with money. i do believe however, that they have created for themselves a PR initiative for future arguments to their advantage. next time people complain about them, they'll just remind all of their out of court settlement of the reverred ogoni-9 families.

you made some vital points. but look at it this way:

the issue now is that MEND needs the rest of the country to do this fight. and by the time they get the rest of the country, the international community will join the fight. b/c this is a humanitarian matter. nigeria is known all over the world as a corrupt nation and every nigerian initiative is suspect. by the time the international community sees kidnaps/ financial ransom. . . this whole serious issue is ridiculed as another scam/money making business.

unlike some of the examples u mentioned, the nigerian govt/niger-delta issue is not about break away or political freedom per se. it is about environment/health/ social ammenity/wealth distribution. we need not go to war for such issues that a country should offer naturally to its people.

an the good thing is that the fed govt is at least pretending to be ready to give the niger-delta what it should have. unlike the examples u gave where the oppressor is not hiding the fact that they want to opress forever. and when the fed govt grants amnesty b4 embarking on violence, the fed govt wins the first battle___the moral battle. this makes MEND look like common criminals. that is tooooooo baaad for this mission.

MEND has to look professional/humanitarian. violence must be eschewed. in all its ramification. b/c ur cause is a just cause and it will be easy to gain support. afer all, how popular is the nig govt. that's all i'm saying, shun this violence, get the support and see if the rest of the country get conscience or not.

another thing they can do is to use their force to ensure a free and fair elections in those areas. that way u guys can have real representatives at the center, who will even be part of the movt. orMEND can even form a political party and send people to abuja. things will start happening. try it.

the ANC was never involved in kidnapping or killing people, nelson mandela made it categorically clear that they were not anti whites, but anti white supremacy. ANC had international support, but even the international community that had sympathy for MEND is taken aback by the steady kidnapping of foreigners for money which eventually led to the death of at least one british national.  the same international support they need badly.

fact: the international community will not send any troops to fight for the niger-delta or to stop the federal army

fact:  MEND cannot over power the full weight of the nigerian military, even in the creeks.

fact: the little infrastructure destroyed in the mess, will take another decade or more to debate when to start rebuilding them. needless to say, the lives lost, are lost forever.

fact: after all the violence, the solution will come from the dialogue table.

fact: MEND cannot go it alone, they need the sympathy of the other regions of the country. this is sad, but true. that sympathy is being lost with each day of violence, kidnapping, etc.

fact: the niger-delta economy/security is going down, who looses? all of us but most especially the niger-deltans

fact: a concerted continuous non-violent effort with sustained pressure will make the niger-delta issue a primary one for the nation. and this will bring some changes in the area.

fact: the best brains from the niger-delta leading this charge will be productive, they'll be joined by other forces from other parts, imagine people like gani and soyinka joining the pressure, things will change. nigeria didnt go to war to drive General IBB out of power, na y'aradua we no go fit influence his policy? fact: there are people who benefit from this mayhem and they will want it to go on. they are routing for MEND to continue. na siddon look we dey

the problem in the niger-delta is something that every nigerian is unhappy about. most nigerians dislike the injustice metted to those guys by the fed govt. and this is a fight the niger-delta will need the rest of the country to engage the fed govt. but when we see kids kidnapped, money demanded . . over and over again and again and again, that sympathy for the hardship of the niger-delta fades away.

if they think they can use violence to fight such a reasonable issue. . . it is unfortunate. very unfortunate.
