You were blind, deaf and dumb when other countries introduced compulsory quarantining at ports of entry, abi?

Health / Re: No Single Non Returning Nigerian Has Tested Positive To Coronavirus Except... by proffemi: 7:07pm On Mar 25, 2020
Incorrect. There have in fact been 9 or 10 local transmissions.

TonyeBarcanista:
By Tonyebarcanista

On February 27 when an unnamed Italian national (who came into Nigeria from Covid-19 ravaged Italy five days earlier and transited between Lagos and Ogun states) tested positive to the dreaded Coronavirus, there was pandemonium and fear among Nigerians, who reasoned that the index case might already have distributed the virus through the contact he made with those he came across with before he was diagnosed as well as those that might have had physical contact with those he was in contact with.

Many panicked, many prayed, some fasted while others became friends with Google search engine and WhatsApp broadcast messages. But a month after the index case, NOT a single person that came in contact with the Italian man displayed symptoms of the disease nor tested positive to it. This is in contrast with what is happening in Europe, USA, Iran, China and other countries, where hundreds of thousands of people contracted the virus do to contact with those already infected. In fact, this unexplained mystery caused many Nigerians to doubt the veracity and credibility of the report on the index case. Thankfully, the case was successfully treated and discharged three weeks after by Lagos state government

All Confirmed Cases Are Returnees From Abroad Except...
Furthermore, between the time that the index case was diagnosed and today (March 25), Nigeria has recorded up to 46 confirmed cases of those with the the Covid-19 virus according to the stat of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

Interestingly all the 46 confirmed cases are returnees from abroad (United Kingdom, Germany, European Union, United States etc) and they all contracted the disease before coming into the country except one case in Ekiti state that is suspicious (I'll address this in the next paragraph). Even the one death recorded by Nigeria was a case that stayed and returned from the United Kingdom (where he contracted the virus).

The Controversial Ekiti Case...
Now talking about the case of the man that tested "positive" to the virus in Ekiti state.

The state government claimed that the man in question is a driver that drove a deceased American man that came into the country along with his female caregiver. According to the government, the Covid-19 test result of the American man is "inconclusive", the result of the female caregiver that came into the country with the American man and stayed with him is Negative, but they turned around to say the driver that drove him in Ekiti tested positive. How does that make sense? I am yet to see any inconsistent and inconclusive result since the beginning of the pandemic save this Ekiti case. We leave that to Ekiti state to answer.

No Non-Returning Family Member Of Confirmed Cases Have Tested Positive So Far
Another interesting fact about this pandemic is that the results of close family members of some of the cases who didn't visit any of the Coronavirus ravaged countries came negative even when the cases are positive.

For instance, while the son Nigeria's former vice president Atiku Abubakar, Muhammed Atiku was tested positive, his wife and child results came negative (although they were with him). Even the driver that drove him tested negative. Similarly, the family of the Speaker of Edo state house of assembly Friday Ekiyo, who just tested positive, all tested negative.

Coronavirus Is Indeed A Leveler...
Also, an interesting thing about this Covid-19 pandemic is that Nigeria, for the first time, is witnessing a situation where "big men" are preferring the dilapidated hospitals that they refused to fix to travelling to the United Kingdom, Germany, United States of America etc to seek medical help. These are people that have history of traveling overseas for ordinary slight headache or fever.

Similarly, Nigeria for the first time is witnessing a situation where diasporas are seeking ways to return home for their health sake than remain in diaspora

The most interesting part in all these is that we are witnessing for the first time that Nigeria would issue travel ban against United States, China, United Kingdom, European Union, Middle East etc. This has never happened before! Indeed, Coronavirus is a leveller.

Take Precautionary Measures And Stay Safe
Though the stats seem to favor Nigerians that didn't visit nor return from the Covid-19 ravaged countries (as seen in my earlier paragraphs) and I pray it remains so, I still urge everyone to take serious every precautions prescribed by global health professionals and government. This is the only way we can conquer and defeat this pandemic.

May God repose of those that lost their lives

If I were a gambling man sir, I would confidently bet my palm-wine tappers bicycle, and even throw in my second wife for good measure, on the premise that West Africa's ENTIRE Corona virus body count will be expressed in just two digits , unlike the utter mass decimation of human life that is unfolding daily in Iran, Italy, Spain and now, ever so gradually, in England and the USA, both lands with many ties and memories for this writer, harking back to a simpler, more predictable time spent along this journey called life.

Friend, I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will indeed be the outcome here.
I believe strongly that it is possible. If we do not mess it up by behaving irresponsibly, I am hopeful that we will surprise ourselves and the world in the next few weeks. But for now, let's all get busy; we have a fight on our hands grin

Tnx 4 ur contribution but I think u have also missed d point. I don't no were u read were I said exclusively that weather isn't responsible for corona. If u read it anywhere in my comments, pls bring it to my knowledge. Even my comment, u quoted doesn't even tally with what u accuse me of. Pls avail urself of d things I said. I also did a chronology of d exchange I had with d gentleman. All u did was to pick one thing and draw conclusions and what u picked doesn't tally with d conclusions u drew

Point of correction. I read your posts. I only happened to select one at random to respond to.
I have had my say. If your conclusion, with all I have said, is that I have missed the point, that's too bad.
I wish you happy arguing. Have a good day.

Edit: just so you're clear, I decided not to say anything about your side argument about AC because it was a distraction from the main points both of you started with. Which is:

If it was so straightforward, then Australia wouldn't have had 7deaths from more than 1000 cases".
and
A country has to be warm AND humid (tropical) AND relatively poor (otherwise there’d be too much air conditioning and corona will spread indoors)

He never said the weather alone was responsible. Your taking a stance against him is what shows that despite what you said, you saw the weather as a minor factor if it is one at all. It is not a minor factor. It is very important one.

You also later implied that he was saying that the cold causes c19. He didn't. He tried to make a plausible argument that countries likely to have large-scale cooling might still provide conditions for ready spread of c19 even if they are generally hot. I'm not sure I agree with that entirely, but it is not a baseless idea.

I dont no about d weather but I think inbuilt immunity acquired over time has been helpful. Symptoms of corona include cough, catarrh & sore throat which are what we get here on regular basis, take a few drugs & its gone. Some people even take orange for catarrh. There's something WHO just aren't looking at to address d issue

Lexy, sorry, I do not wish to be rude, but this is not right.

People shouldn't argue with others based on impressions, hunches or urban myths. You have the whole Internet to help you. Study, educate yourself, and don't argue just to prove yourself right.

The Canada guy is right.

The effect of weather on the transmission of COVID is now scientific fact. A brief visit to Google scholar should make this clear to you (and would require less time than you have spent arguing pointlessly). As he also correctly acknowledged, the weather alone will not insulate any country. Other things have to be in place. Those things are being put in place very late here in Nigeria (God help us). Thirdly, I had to mentally facepalm (not physically; covid things, hahaha) so many times while reading your posts. Why mix up the weather of different countries when you can simply type "temperature in Tehran" in Google and see the temperature and humidity differences??

Guys, covid is a serious menace, but so are boneheaded arguments without educating ourselves first.

For those who want some perspective into conduct of the student in question, I leave you with just two tidbits:
1. The student in question was ranting that even the VC could do nothing to him (he stated his reasons; I won't mention them here).
2. He subsequently brought half a dozen individuals from town to manhandle the lecturer.

With the above info, conclude by yourself if this sounds like a guy who was victimized after calmly explaining things to the lecturer.

NB: As I said, I did not witness any of the above, but I have been briefed twice.

..."Dolapo, who was on the queue proceeded to explain the situation of things to the lecturer"

The OP must be a dishonest clown for writing the above.

1. I know that ATM. It is right beside the road, but sensible students know to queue ALONG the road, while others prefer to obstruct traffic. Most times when I come to White House, I have to toot on the horn for some clown to leave the road. Mind you, members of staff use this same ATM, and never obstruct the road.

2. I have heard this story from two eye-witnesses: one member of staff and one student. Your Dolapo was not the one obstructing the road. The original offender accepted the lecturer's rebuke with little protest while Dolapo flew in, doubtless because he believes he is connected. You wouldn't describe Dolapo's entry into the fray as "proceeded to explain the situation to the lecturer" unless you were either not properly briefed, or a shameless liar.

You should learn to always stay on the side of the truth. I barely know this Ajao guy, and don't care about the outcome of this case. Still: stay on the side of the truth; if you try to soil a guy's reputation with half truths and outright lies, your own downfall may follow in short order.

Some idiots have started shouting about sadistic lecturers again, when the simple fact is that no student who passed SSCE English should fail CVE 401 (Technical Report Writing, a course with the same level of difficulty as a general elective) once, never mind twice. This guy's suicide is a sad waste, but don't start the thing with ready excuses again.

Gbam.
Nigerian educational system is just cram and pass, and then obtain paper qualification. Most don't even understand how what they crammed apply to real world situation.
Although I studied architecture, I have a very curious mind. I must know how things work. That's why I was never religious. I broke our TV when I was young just to know how TVs work. And I did not stop until I learn R-C oscillator circuits, modulation and demodulation of radio frequency signals, etc.
I have asked a group of graduates to explan the real meaning of sin30 and WHY it is 0.5. Non was able to answer correctly. Everyone knows sin30 is 0.5, but how many graduates and even post graduates know why?

A system in which students pay the equivalent of $500 for an entire engineering degree cannot but have flaws. To expect otherwise is to be deluded.

The real question is:do all engineering graduates of Nigeria have these same deficits you and OP are complaining about? The answer is a big, fat "no!". Those who are willing to go the extra mile *on their own* have successfully passed through this system and worked in top positions around the globe. I myself can count dozens of my former students in this category. It is those who were unable to do the extra work that are whining. After paying a pittance compared to what the graduates from the Stanfords and MITs of this world pay, you want world-class engineering education to fall on you. Beeni! (yinmu)

Op's point that more hands-on components is needed is true, but he left his ignorance hanging out when he made this statement "...most of the curriculum is old, we spent so much time studying theories that should be thought as a mere history".

My friend, the system has its flaws. Quite a whole lot don't know exactly why we integrate. Many don't know why we change from time to frequency domain and vice versa. A lot more don't even know the direct application of Laplace, Fourier and Z-transform. Our lecturers bore the hell out of us with these things we can relate with. We write the curl of E in electromagnet wave theory but what exactly is that?

Your teacher ought to make the links for you, but lets accept for the sake of argument that he didn't. What stops you from helping yourself the way some students do? What do you do on YouTube? What about the dozens of free MOOC resources on the subject online?

The average Nigerian is a statistician
They concoct numbers and percentage from nowhere to drive home their points... it's becoming a norm for Nigerians online to use stats based on gut feeling to impress others... real ignorance that stinks to high heavens

This thread itself is an appropriate microcosm of Nigerian engineering education. The ones who need to learn the most are the once who defend their misconceptions and ignorance the most, while spewing all manners of excuses. Right on this thread, I have read up to three posts from actual people who passed through the so-called scam system and then traveled abroad. If the point was education, the ranters here have enough to learn from right here, but nope, they'd rather *not* learn, and give excuses instead.

That is the story of education in Nigeria for you.

Wrong. We teach old out dated stuff. And even that old one, we don't teach well. I follow foreign curricula and read discussions by foreign students almost every week. The difference is like Heaven and Earth.

The fault's not solely our Universities. Our primary and Secondary schooling is mediocre. Both pupils, students and their teachers are D- levels. The amount of mark padding going on in our private schools is legendary.

You make many valid points but then ruin the whole thing by defending the culture of excuse-giving that madridsta007 has consistently and rightly criticized.

Studying in Nigeria and completely relying on your lecturers, laboratories, etc, is deluding yourself.
Going outside the box in every course is the way to go.
I know graduates of Engineering in Nigeria who are currently working at NASA, Washington D.C. Two brothers from a University in Northern Nigeria.
If you rely on what you are being taught, you'll probably end up being mediocre. If you go outside the box, you wouldn't. The average Nigerian student is extremely lazy. He/she goes on the internet to chat and engage in other frivolities. It is the same internet that gives the hard-working ambitious student, Edx and Coursera free courses, which this hard-working student takes and improves his knowledge of data science and analysis to complement the theories he learns in school.

The ambitious student does not have two heads. The lazy student easily latches onto an excuse, such as describing his/her course of study in Nigeria as a "scam". No sir/ma. It isn't. You are the lazy, scamming student.
It is up to you.

Bravo.

It is impossible for anyone to implement anything. University or polytechnic
You get put so much theories to your head your brain will discard everything since you are not taught how to implent it.

Its like pouring water to a basket, the moment you finish exam, everything is gone in your head..
An average graduate does not remember anything, what is the point of learning if you are going to forget it all at the end of the day?
People that think like you are Nigerian problem.
There is need to reform the educational system in nigeria..
We are not even talking about making innovation..
Lets just be copying what developed nation are doing.. let us be manufacturing substandard phones, tv and all. One day we will get there..just like china did.

There is need for reformation. How can anyone defend the old and outdated stuffs we learn in Nigerian universities.....

You are part of Nigerias problem. Honestly

Which university and department did you graduate from? That may help shed some light on your perspective.

Many of the things you think are wrong with the system are perfectly okay or inconsequential.

Indeed, you ought to be able to remember what you were taught, but even if you can't, it may not be the end of the world. You have probably internalized some of it, meaning that they affect the very way you think and analyze things, even if you cannot recall the equations. For example, you might have applied the concept of transforms numerous times, without needing to recall any equations.

The most important outcome of an engineering degree ought to be that we teach you how to think like an engineer . The system largely fails in this, for reasons I will not go into right now. That failure is the main problem with the system. Some curricula are very good, some are just meh, but that is far less important than you think.
