Warship: Lol. Folks think a problem is a piece of cake till they have to solve it. I think you'll find that ETF (now TETFUND) already placed some burden on the industry. Your solution has already been deployed tay-tay as ETF. It's not enough. 1 Like |

semyman: Sometimes I blame ASUU when I read posts like this. One solution to this problem has always been to jerk up school fees. Someone has to fund the system, and if you folks don't want us to make government do it, then go ahead and pick up the slack. Funny how you guys don't realize that government has already gotten away with murder at the secondary level. Today, public secondary schools are increasingly an option for only the poor. If you want qualitative secondary education for your kids, you know what to do. No strike, no tantrums, no name-calling or demonizing. If you're poor, you take your kids to podunk college, where their odds of ever seeing the 4 walls of a federal university become almost zero. Someone wants to destroy public universities in a similar way. It's either government, or fools who don't realize what's at stake, or parents who don't want to pay for top education. ASUU won't let that happen (and you lot better hope ASUU doesn't just throw in the towel in disgust). The irony is this: whatever happens, the lecturers are the ones who will suffer the least. And, lest I forget, yeah, we're ready for no-work-no-pay. Bring it on. 10 Likes 2 Shares |

CornelG: What's the point in rushing to complete an education if what you are getting is rubbish? Kids in public secondary schools have no problem with their calendar, right? They finish at the same time as the kids from private school, and yet, the quality of the education they get is so low that they (generally!) stand no chance when competing against the private school kids, as I have stated in a previous post. If I were you, I'd be concerned about the quality of education, rather than how fast I get a worthless degree dumped in my hands. Getit? 2 Likes |

CornelG: I've enjoyed the banter with you because you come across as a nice fellow, but if you still want me to "explain" even after the examples I have given (TETFUND now funding billions of dollars of projects; staff recruitment training and retention), I'll start wondering if you're not just trying to wind me up. 2 Likes |

Education / Re: Suny Edeko: 'I Will Sue ASUU For N10bn If They Disrupt Me' by proffemi: 4:05pm On Nov 14, 2018 |
CornelG: Lol. Visit any university. Ask if they have projects funded by TETFUND. You will find that almost every new project of note is funded by TETFUND. This is a *direct* outcome of ASUU industrial actions. While there, ask the staff how many lecturers and even non-teaching staff have been sponsored abroad for graduate studies. Find out how many lecturers used to bother returning after graduate studies, and find out what the figure is now. Don't stop there o. Ask them how successful they were in retaining their good students as lecturers in the days of poor salaries. Ask them what the picture is now with the marginal improvement in remuneration. If you're indeed wiling to let go of preconceptions and face the truth, you will realize that ASUU's tactics have worked over time. So why did you say they should stop using those tactics again? Right. 2 Likes |

Okoyeebo: No, you should not spread ignorance like a cold. OAU has not left ASUU. The university's chapter has a problem where the leaders of one of the factions were expelled from the union. It thus makes it easy for the university administration to pretend that no lecturers are on strike. Lecturers in ASUU (OAU) are very much on strike, while those in the splinter group are not. Now, you know. As to whether ASUU is impotent or not: I agree that the union has barked up the wrong tree on occasion. Be that as it may, without ASUU, public tertiary education would have collapsed by now. Government has abdicated its responsibilities to public primary and secondary schools. They would do the same at tertiary level but for ASUU's neck lock. I know this because it has already happened at primary and secondary levels. The overwhelming majority of intakes into my university (a top federal university) are now from private secondary schools. Products of public schools are probably trooping to colleges of education and polytechnics. So, rich kids get into top universities and poor ones find lower-ranked alternatives, after a caricature of a secondary education. The only thing stopping a similar gulf in quality from opening up at the tertiary level is ASUU. So, keep demonizing ASUU, but know this: if the day ever dawns on which government breaks the back of ASUU, lecturers are not the ones who will suffer. You can take that to the bank. 8 Likes 1 Share |

If you are amnesic, you can at least scroll through your history and tell me what I said, or what gives you the goddamn right to spit on someone old enough to be your father, for trying to help? You young ones need to learn that there are sometimes real consequences to being obnoxious online, especially when you are dumb enough to leave a trail all over cyberspace. |

Bacteriologist: "Timilehin", if you wanted to know if I'm in the same class as teachers who made your own life hell, you could have found out. Well, I am not. My interactions with other students on Nairaland are oh-so public records. Note this, and note it well: those so quick to resort to abusive language online do so under the mistaken notion that you can remain anonymous for ever. You are not anonymous to me. A quick check reveals that in your case, your godless existence and circumstances are certainly reason enough for the unprovoked bile. You obviously need help, and I see no point in poking an individual in such a bad place psychologically. You can feel free to say whatever you like, seeing as you need to vent, but do so knowing that I basically know your entire life history. Stay on the right sides of decency and abusive language. |

greatman55: Your mentality shows gross misunderstanding of the whys and the hows of examination regulations. This had nothing to do with fatherly heart. You either have a case (in which case, the dept. has to sort out the mess) or your don't (in which case, you should please eschew sentiments, lick your wounds, and look to the future). The questions I asked earlier should rapidly establish how much of a case you have, but for reasons best known to you, you would rather chit-chat with other students who don't know their left from their right, than engage with people who can actually advise you. |

greatman55: Pertinent questions which you can answer now: 1. How was the change of exam time communicated to students? 2. How much notice were students given (how close to the exam date was the time changed)? 3. Was the change of time in response to a request from members of the class? 4. Was the request above communicated to the lecturer formally? Other pertinent questions 1. Was the HOD aware of the time change? Formally notified? Informally? |

Would you even know logical if it bit you? May I remind you of your initial comment? This foolish guy is helping to feed criminals, tomorrow he will come on here to complain of how he was robbed, Ode!! what does Ode! even mean? Ewu gambia! It is the job of the government to feed prisoners. Can anyone sound stupider in so few sentences? gypsey: [s]Gypsey, you don't sound like a really bad person, so I'll offer this advice: let it go. You can't win them all, and you obviously came down on the wrong side of this issue. Don't take my word for it. Scroll through the posts and find out how many people have been inspired. The more you try to dig in, the more you come across as a [I don't want to use strong language]. With all that is happening in Nigeria, we still have people who would risk their lives for others (just like the brave heart who drowned in Rivers a few weeks back). Cynicism may say they are fools, but they are not. I assure you that at least a couple of those prisoners today would take that act of kindness to their graves (because that is just how things work for some people). Please learn not to see a man who wasted ~N2000 gala. See instead the proof that we all can inspire ourselves with simple acts. And knock off this pointless back-and-forth (Just my opinion o, no vex).[/s] |

gypsey: The irony is that an slowpoke would consider me a cretin for pointing out the obvious: an act of kindness at great cost inspires others. I won't bother asking you which of my sentiments are illogical, because I can see right through your posts at the sorry state of your intellect. Did you notice how many people were moved to tears by his simple act, or are you too busy choking on your cynicism? Remain cynical and stupid if you will, but don't blame our outlook for your dark view of the world. |

borie4u: I agree with you absolutely. The man took a great risk. But that is EXACTLY why it is a great inspiration to others. An act of kindness becomes exponentially more powerful when it comes at great cost or risk. Now do you understand me ? edit: by the way, you teacher misled you be telling only half of the tale. What he didn't tell you is that most of the good we have in the world today came from the "foolish" risks of others. |
