I was already agnostic when I left Nigeria. Now I'm an atheist.

But you're right, it's much more difficult to denounce religion as a Nigerian living in Nigeria. That is why I have the utmost admiration for Nigerian-based atheists. Here in Europe, you don't exactly need much convincing to see religion for the fraud that it is, especially when you observe the way most people go about their daily business without God playing any role in it whatsoever. In Northern Europe where I'm based, God is virtually a non-issue. Yet, these countries are doing excellently in virtually all areas you can think of.

There seems to be something about the Nigerian society that makes it extremely difficult for even die hard skeptics to break away completely from those shackles. Before I left Nigeria, I had two really good female friends who were almost as agnostic as I was before I left. I recently had a phone chat with one of them after a long time, and I couldn't believe that she was practically preaching to me. She claimed to have experienced "certain things" that changed her mind about God. I guess this is what Nigeria does to people. I have seen skeptical folks here in Europe travel back home for a few weeks, only to return even more religious than they used to be. I recently became acquainted with a US-based Nigerian lady. She was born in Nigeria but has lived practically all her years in the US. She traveled to Nigeria two months ago and has now changed from agnostic to an ecumenical Christian, although she claims to still have issues with many aspects of the bible. I just don't get it.

On the other hand, I have at least 2 Nigerian friends here who have completely abandoned religion since they arrived here. I've heard of a 3rd guy but I haven't met him yet. I started to suspect one of them just about 2 or 3 weeks ago when he called me on phone and the discussion drifted to him telling me about some Christopher Hitchens video he watched on YouTube. He sounded really excited as he narrated how Hitchens basically hitch-slapped his opponent to a pulp. I then asked when he started watching such kinds of videos and if he was now an atheist or what. He gave a typical Nigerian response: "O boy, na so we see am o. But I still dey keep low profile for now because I no want make anybody know, especially for my church." He attends JW where he also met his current girlfriend. cheesy

Religiousity and superstitious beliefs in Nigeria are particularly overwhelming, that it's only in Nigeria you will see an atheist that believes in "Jazz". grin

Why Cleverley Isn’t As Bad As People Think

Summary:

It is obvious that some people have a sustained dislike of Cleverley and you can understand why because he does a lot of his work off the ball. He does seem to go missing at times but he does occasionally show that he offers a tactical advantage to both United and England. There is no doubt that he needs to start creating more chances and score more goals, much like Aaron Ramsey has been doing, if critics are to change their opinion on him. But he is not as bad a footballer as most people make out.

wesley80: Dude, you're only trying to be smart by half.
Considering my post was not even directed at you, I deem you an irredeemable retärd for taking this so personal because your charlatan master is being shown for the fraud that he is.

wesley80: Firstly, the Argentine president never had cancer but was diagnosed wrongly and given a clean bill of health after her surgery.
You must be dyslexic. Show me where I wrote that the Argentine president HAD cancer.

wesley80: Secondly, her head injury happened in AUGUST this year long after the prophecy and was not disclosed, so you my friend are the desperate liar here as there obviously are no "health antecedents" for TB Joshua to have built on. Whoever heard of hypertension requiring surgery? Certainly not me.
You must have serious problems with comprehension. Did you not see where I wrote that her head injury was recent? And where did you read that her hypertension requires surgery? (by the way, there ARE possible surgical procedures to treat hypertension!). Fact remains that the Argentine president has a history of health problems, which is what my initial post tried to show. A simple Google search would easily reveal that to you. For a calculative charlatan like TB Joshua who obviously has so many resources at his disposal, having even more inside information to build his "prophecy" on would hardly prove difficult.

wesley80: Thirdly, you admitted the term 'soon' was relative but yet couldn't resist brandishing your callousness in attacking the prophet over a term that could be 'relative'. If you've listened to his prophecies as I have you'd know to tell which is imminent and which isnt, in any case your criticism here only gives up your unashamed folly.
You are a fool of epic proportions. The whole "soon" issue is exactly what makes his "prophecy" a fraud! A man "prophesies" that something would happen "soon". Because "soon" is very relative, it means that whenever it happens - 1.5 years, 3 years, 10 years, 20 yrs later - he would have been proven right after all. This is the very definition of vague. Are you so daft that you can't even grasp this basic logic?

Of course, those of us with a brain can easily see why TB Joshua refused to be specific, unlike idiots like yourself. The last time he gave a specific time period to his "prophecy" in 2011 when he "prophesied" that the Boko Haram insurgency would end by March 2012, he FAILED spectacularly. Now, I expect a raving baboon like yourself to come here and tell us how the "prophecy" failed because the Nigerian government refused to listen to him. I dare you, isn't that your explanation? cheesy

wesley80: Finally you accused him of predicting 'death'! A common attribute of you armchair and ignorant critics is your constant penchant to relegate facts and allow your petty emotions cloud your judgement even when contrary facts stare you in the face. The prophet makes his position absolutely clear; a situation shall arise, perform surgery and he/she dies, ignore surgery and he/she would live. Now who is the calculative charlatan saying She doesnt have much time to live on earth?
The Argentine president suffers from chronic hypertension. Some news sources report hypotension. Either way, it's obvious she has had issues with her blood pressure for a while. Therefore, "prophesying" death (arising from possible complications) following a surgery hardly requires divine revelation, I would think. TB Joshua is a calculative, unscrupulous son of a gun. Pity you are unable to see that as you have apparently exchanged your brain for a meager plate of morsel.

Meanwhile, why haven't you updated your initial post, or posted a follow-up comment to tell us that the president of Argentina has successfully undergone a surgery already, and is now recovering at her residence? ---> http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-24438437
Christianity EtcRe: Is TB Joshua's Argentina Prophecy Coming To Pass? by Purist(m): 12:51pm On Oct 13, 2013
The Argentine president obviously has a history of ill health.

- She had previously been diagnosed of cancer
- She suffers from chronic hypertension
- She recently had a head injury

As of the time this so-called "prophecy" was made, her health condition certainly was not anywhere near optimal. Even a certified fool would have been able to venture out a guess and "prophesy" the impending death of a certain leader in Argentina, given these antecedents (notice how "leader" is so generic).

Furthermore, this "prophecy" was made as far back as April 2012. That's exactly 1 year and 6 months ago. Yet, we were made to believe back then that an Argentinian leader would die SOON. Pray tell, how on earth is 1.5 years "soon" (and we're still even awaiting this death o)? My understanding of "soon", although relative in itself, does not in anyway indicate that we would have to wait for a whole year and half to see the manifestation of the predicted event.

But of course, TB Joshua, being the calculative charlatan that he is, has obviously studied this woman's health history extensively to know well enough that she doesn't really have much longer to spend on this earth. We just have to wait for when it will inevitably happen, even if it would take 2 years, 5 years or even 10 years. After all, he "prophesied" that it would happen "soon", and we all know that "soon" is very relative term.

And to appease the TB Joshua apologists in the event that she fails to die any time in the foreseeable future, remember that TB Joshua prophesied the death of a "leader", not necessarily "president". So even if some local Argentine politician dies next week (which is more than likely), his "prophecy" would have come to pass anyway.

TB Joshua -- scamming gullible Nigerians since the 90's. cheesy

The Rumours and the Reality – Pogba, Morrison and Januzaj
by Manchester United Youth historian, Tony Park

So after watching the young Belgian take the Premier League headlines on Saturday evening, and rightly so with a magnificent performance, many fans re-opened the Paul Pogba debate. Maybe, it’s never been fully closed, but when Ravel Morrison’s scored a superb solo goal for West Ham today, bloggers, tweeters and forum posters were out in force.

----

On Morrison:

Ravel Morrison... what a player! His story is much simpler.

In all my years watching youth football you can rarely say “he is a cert…!” Norman Whiteside was a cert. Ryan Giggs was a cert. Paul Scholes was a cert. Ravel Morrison was one of the most talented footballers I have ever seen come through the system. Having joined the club at seven years old, a self-confessed Arsenal and Thierry Henry fan, he was special from the start. By the time I started watching him at 13/14 he could do everything.

His talent is unquestionable….he was a ‘cert’.

Unfortunately for the young Mancunian, his problems off the pitch were worrying. Coming from a severely fractured upbringing, his teenage years were a catalogue of personal misdemeanors. I won’t go into detail but an average Google search will show reports of gangland fights, witness intimidation, theft, violence, periods of truancy from the club, refusal to train, amongst other episodes, all of which left the lad with a criminal record.

And it was getting worse.

The club tried getting senior professionals such as Rio Ferdinand to help as a role model. They put him in stable digs with other families. They gave him psychological counseling. When everyone had given up on Ravel, Alex Ferguson still wanted to give him another chance…so aware of his precocious talent.

Unfortunately, the type of behaviour being ‘allowed’ or at least being ‘accepted’ was causing problems amongst many of the junior players.

“Why should I come into training if he doesn’t?”

The club is always bigger than any individual and Ferguson eventually decided to transfer him to another club. A change of scenery was probably best for both parties.

Coogar has a point here. There is a strong reason to suspect that our creativity is suffering at the moment because of Rooney. This is not an indictment of Rooney's ability at all, but a question of where he's most effective for the TEAM as a whole. The article below sums it all up so aptly.

IS WAYNE ROONEY CENTRAL TO UNITED’S WOES?

Since Wayne Rooney returned to the starting line-up following the 4-1 win against Swansea, Manchester United failed to registered an open play goal in the Premier League, with this unwanted record continuing in the 2-1 defeat against West Brom Albion this weekend.

In a country where power is appreciated over technique, running over positioning, tackling over tactical intelligence and directness over possession, Rooney has been hyped up for possessing these ‘ideal’ qualities. In last 5 matches, Rooney has been hailed by pundits, journalists and fans for his good performances due to his non-stop running, determination and work rate. With Rooney scoring 3 goals via free kick in last 3 matches, all this has served as a smokescreen, for Rooney struggles the #10 role .

If we analyse Rooney’s stats from the past 5 Premier League matches, he has made 34 long passes and only 4 through balls with an average pass accuracy rate of only 74%, very poor for someone playing as a playmaker.

Rooney has been unable to provide any threat in between the lines as he does not have the quick feet and quick thinking to play in most congested area. When there were opposition players around him, he’s been poor holding up the ball and finds himself unable to escape with the ball to create openings.

Due to his limitation, Rooney’s frequently drops deep to find himself a little bit of space, thus playing long diagonal ball to the wingers hence the whopping 34 long passes, not good enough for a player whose primary role is to inflict damage higher up the pitch.

With Rooney unable to offer any options and threat through the middle, United have opt to attack through horribly out of form wingers. Unfortunately something easily dealt with by defending deep and limiting the space at the byline so that our wingers and fullbacks have difficulty providing quality crosses.

As a result, United have looked short of ideas and penetration in the final third of the pitch, with opposition teams easily stifling United’s predictable attacking play.

Following United’s 2-1 defeat to West Brom, David Moyes admitted:

“We lacked an intensity and spark to our game, and in the end they deserved the win, I can’t argue with that. In the first half we had a lot of the ball and tried to move it – we probably controlled a lot of the game – but I thought for all our possession we didn’t create a lot of opportunities. And when we did, we didn’t take them.”

“Possession without cutting edge” is a recurring theme for his side since taking over the helm from Sir Alex and with the 2-1 defeat to West Brom, Moyes has said that he needed to evaluate the players at his disposal. The problem is that he has been chopping and changing all the outfield players… except Wayne Rooney.

He made a number of changes in the second half but left Rooney on, even though he had one of his poorer games so far and seemed short of ideas playing in the hole. The decision to sub off Shinji Kagawa at half time instead of moving him inside and pushing Rooney to the left or higher up was confusing, especially as Kagawa was one of the players likely to create something, with Nani.

During the 4-1 defeat against Manchester City, Moyes played Rooney in the hole with Welbeck ahead of him. It proved to be disaster as Van Persie has been compensating for Wayne Rooney’s shortcomings in that area with his technical abilities. If Welbeck was played behind Wayne Rooney against City, I believe it will make a whole lot of different in that match with Welbeck better equipped to beat opponents in that area.

The problem with Wayne Rooney is that he is not a #9 type of striker who playing high up the pitch looking to make a run behind the opposition back four as he likes to drop deep nor he is a playmaker or ”trequartista”with the guile, craft and technical abilities to impose damage in between the line as he lacks the touch, the hold up play or the quick feet to skip past defenders in the most crowded area on the pitch.

Wayne Rooney is still a very good all around player but I don’t think he is suited to be playing as a playmaker, David Moyes needs to find the best position for Rooney and the best way to utilise his strengths but clearly, his strengths are not made for the role of #10.

As an alternative, perhaps David Moyes should start utilising Shinji Kagawa more in the #10 role.

Sir Alex had been trying hard to bring in a playmaker toward the end of his tenure, as can be seen in his pursuit of Wesley Sneijder, the best #10 at that time. Missing out on him, in the end managed to bring in Shinji Kagawa who was named the best player in Bundesliga for the past 2 seasons.

Sir Alex’s transfer activity clearly showed that he was aware of the weakness in that area for United, and he thus attempted to rectify it.

Kagawa debut season was interrupted by injury, this year he is keen to make up for lost ground. Perhaps Moyes should give him the chance to.

I have a feeling Moyes will compensate with the cup tournaments though. The league was never going to be easy with a new manager at the helm anyway, especially if we consider the additional fact that it's always harder to defend a title. Every team tends to play you like it's a final. If Moyes wins either one of the FA Cup, League Cup or UCL grin and qualify for champions league next season, he'd have done very okay in my book.

Funny thing is, the stats paint a completely different picture. United had more of the ball and had a higher pass completion rate.

In the second half alone, Man City completed just 75 passes, while Manchester United completed 255.

superstar1: It has everything to do with DM. If they refused to show up in 1st half, I agree could be due to the players lackadaisical attitude. Not showing up in 2nd is the coach's fault. Can they try that with Fergie ? Plzzzz
I knew it was only a matter of time before someone draws a comparison with Fergie.

It seems with every bad game United has now, people are so eager to tell us "if it were Fergie", as if Fergie never had his own moments too. Looking back now, I'm so happy we lost 1 - 6 to this same Man City just 2 seasons ago when Fergie was the manager. If not, everyone here would have been telling us how this kind of result would NEVER have happened under Fergie.

You guys criticizing the manager are just being fickle and unreasonable. We had a bad game, yes. It hurts, definitely. But y'all need to chill the fvck out with the witch-hunts.

SAF's exclusive interview with MUTV

On Wayne Rooney:

“I thought Wayne’s performance was fantastic on Tuesday. I was pleased to see that.

“He’s got his energy back, his determination and his purpose to attack players.

“It was all very encouraging for me and, being a director, I’m delighted to see that. He’s back to the way we always remember him.”

On United under David Moyes:

“I loved the Swansea game, I loved Saturday [when United beat Crystal Palace], I loved Tuesday. I thought they played terrific on Tuesday night. The Swansea game, terrific. The Liverpool game? Agony.

“I spoke to David Moyes about this after the Liverpool game. We’d gone there over the years, 20-odd times over the years, and we’ve played worse than that and won, you know?

And I can’t believe the criticism United are getting. I thought that David was right – I thought they did play well. Yes, they could have done with a goal, but in the context of my experience of going to Liverpool over there – I can't remember when they hardly got in our box.

“So I was a bit frustrated with that game, because I thought they deserved better, I thought they deserved more, but they won well against Crystal Palace, a difficult game.

“Many times over the years, teams come and park the bus in the penalty box, it’s pretty difficult to break them down.

“Tuesday night, they were terrific. There were key elements of it.

On United's title chances this season:

“And also what’s important, which I think is key to the team, is that of Vida [Nemanja Vidic] stays fit, we’ve got a fantastic chance, you know that. You’ve got Robin van Persie, you’ve got Rooney, all the forwards who can win games.

On the rest of the squad:

“Antonio Valencia was back to his best. He changed the number of his jersey again. It’s amazing how it can affect a player. Maybe it was a great thing for him to do that, to use his initiative to go back to No.25. He was fantastic.

“Michael Carrick’s form has continued from last year, David De Gea is maturing, Patrice Evra was his normal self, so there were a lot of plus points for me from Tuesday.

On referee Mark Halsey's controversial new book

“The laughable part for me is how I influenced the refereeing fraternity, if you think about it.” This is a guy [in reference to himself], by the way, who had the worst record in the history of English football, fined about £100,000 and suspended so many times – that’s some influence, I must say.

“I can’t believe the stuff. Obviously the Alex Ferguson element in his book was thought important but all of the managers, most of the managers, particularly in the north-west, supported him – and a lot of the players by the way – when he had cancer.

“It was a terrible period for the lad and quite rightly I think the football fraternity got around him and supported him, we gave him jerseys for all these dinners he was having.

On retirement:

“I’m enjoying it. Obviously there’s some things you miss – the banter in the dressing-room and the humour on the training pitch, and all the relationships I’ve built over long periods with so many of the coaching staff. Some things you don't miss – press conferences on a Friday that were played over and over again for the whole day.

“I’m relaxed about retiring. I left at the right time. It was a great, great period of my life, being at United.

“It’s been seven weeks since my hip operation and I’m walking, I’m back driving again.

“The one thing I’ve got to be careful about, obviously, is doing exercise, so the gym is out of the question at the moment and golf’s out of the question.

A frustrated and disappointed fan sent en email to Ed Woodward on Transfer Deadline day. He got the response below recently (from Philip Townsend).
----

Thank you for your recent email to Ed Woodward, who has asked me to reply. There has been considerable comment on the Club's activity during the summer but most of it has been ill-informed.

The Club had two main priorities for the transfer window. The first was to keep Wayne Rooney. He is a world class player and the Manager is very keen to have Wayne as a key part of the Club's drive to retain the Premier League trophy. That aim was fulfilled.

The second priority was to add a midfield player, and the capture of Fellaini has met that need. Add to that the fact that Wilfried Zaha is a new signing and that the Manager has added the highly-rated young player Adnan Janazaj to the squad and the team does in fact have a different feel to it than the one that finished last season.

The Club has invested over £40m acquiring new players this summer, as well as re-signing Nani on a long term deal - more than it has traditionally spent on transfers. Additional resources were there to add to that but it was not possible to agree with other clubs for the right players to leave. The key point there is that the players we buy have to be the right ones for Manchester United; not just any player.

The Club has always backed the Manager in the transfer market, as Sir Alex has said on many occasions and it will continue to do so. The Club has demonstrated its belief in, and commitment to, David Moyes through the award of a six year contract. Allowing him to shape the future Manchester United team is a long term project not an eight week panic. He must be given time to assess his new squad and come to his own decisions on which players he feels will strengthen it.

It is worth pointing out that many of the players the Club was associated with during the window had never figured in David Moyes' plans and the name of Manchester United was being used by others to inflate players' values or raise the profile of their availability. Sadly in some cases, despite the fact that the Club informed the media of the inaccuracy of its reporting, they persisted in running those stories without any respect for the quality or truth of the output.

Thank you for taking the time to write.

Yours sincerely,

Philip Townsend
Director of Communications
