Properties › Cost Information: Cost Of Building Materials And Other Related Construction Work by QSFemi(op): 6:53pm On Sep 18, 2016 |
Hello building/construction professionals. I want us to have a cost information database (Cost bank) for every building/construction materials available in Nigeria. This will be updated with reference to economy changes viz-a-viz inflation, deflation, interest rate etc among other factors. The COST BANK will enhance accurate estimate of building/construction projects. Let's keep it rolling: In my area, Lagos; Cement now goes for 2400 naira 225mm (9-inch) block for 250 naira 150mm (6-inch) block for 220 naira |
Properties › Re: Cost To Build Four Bedroom Bungalow With Pent House In Mowe Area by QSFemi(m): 6:26pm On Sep 18, 2016 |
First of all, the dimension of your drawing is not readable and secondly, you need to give specification of some of the materials you will use. For example; type of roofing sheet, type of floor and ceiling finishes, choice of windows and doors, electrical installations, plumbing installations etc. Any figure you will get here without quantification of materials and labour with regard to your drawing is just guess-work and speculation, except if that's what you are looking for. Even at that, if you need an estimate based on previously conducted projects (archive of well documented cost data of completed projects), you will still need to allow for cost indices in order to arrive at a very accurate estimate, which will not be more than or less than 5% of the actual cost you will expend. That's my professional opinion. Adebayowest: Can someone please advise on rough estimate to build 4 bedroom bungalow with pent house in mowe area.
Much appreciated.
Note- The land soil is very good. No any other condition. |
Properties › Re: Cost Of Building A Three Bedroom Flat In The North by QSFemi(m): 5:43pm On Sep 18, 2016 |
Let me chip in a little professional advice. In order for you have a realistic estimate, I will suggest you give some specifications about the choice of materials or finishes you intend to use. For example: state the type of roofing material, type of floor finishes, ceiling finishes, type of doors and windows, painting, choice of plumbing material for WC, Wash hand basin, electrical installations, viz-a-viz conduit wiring or surface wiring, chandeliers, type of luminaries etc. If you can give some of this specification, I will give you an estimate that won't overrun my initial estimate with more than or less than 5%.

Thanks for that invaluable information. I will work on the areas you suggested and keep you posted about my progress. adetola007: It's no longer news that people are doing PhD without masters. I have 2 senior colleagues currently enrolled at University of Texas at Austin and University of Kentucky. That being said, I believe you're qualified to applying, all US schools require a minimum of 3.0 on a scale of 4. Try converting your score to a scale of 4 online here http://www.wes.org/students/igpacalc.asp .This will be you a rough estimate on how your grade correspond to US grade. Then you'll need to write GRE and make at least 320. You can get help on gre from here https://www.nairaland.com/1832477/how-achieve-high-scores-gre You'll also need to write a statement of purpose, a letter explaining your motivation for graduate school. You'll also need to write TOEFL and you need 3 letters of recommendation from your former school. If you have a publication, it'll further enhance your chance. |

From your expressions, I just got to know that MSC is not needed to pursue a PhD program. That caught my attention. Can you please give me sound advice on the following scenario? I have a B.Tech in construction economics, second class honours upper division (4.06/5.00) and would like to pursue a career in academics, up to PhD level. My first instinct is to enrol for MSC before going for PhD. Now that I got knowledge of this direct access to PhD program, I was impressed. How do you think I should go about it? Thanks adetola007: Unfortunately I can't tell you specific schools to apply since our major isn't the same. This is what I'll advice you to do: 1. I can send you the list of all American universities, if you're meticulous enough, you can search the schools on Google to see if they're offering your major or better still, search for all schools offering your course in Google. For example, your search can be like this ' list of US schools offering Geography at graduate (MSc, PhD) level as not all schools have graduate programmes for their undergraduate programmes. 2. Now that you know the schools offering your course, search for the school on Google, include your major in the search to expedite the process. Most times Google will bring the address of the graduate programme, if it doesn't, enter the general departmental website and navigate to graduate study. 3. Carefully read their admission requirements such as gre and TOEFL (if necessary) that you need. Let's say if the school needs 310 on the gre, your target should be 315+. 4. Read their FAQS to get further information, if need be, contact the graduate coordinator, his/her email address will be on the site. 5. Now read their funding opportunities, most schools will tell you all PhD students are fully funded, others may say they fund top 20 or so. Some will explicitly tell you that there's no funding for MSc students while others fund but priority given to PhD students. With this you can decide whether to apply for MSc or PhD program. NB MSc is not a prerequisite for PhD program in most schools. 6. Based on the above information, you can start eliminating schools from your list. With these, I believe you'll be able to make better, informed decision. Good luck to all of us |

NL1960: QS is not needed for every project. Should somebody go and subscribe to the services of a QS because he wants to build a small building in his village?.
On this your 10m, 17, 19, 21, 25, 30m example, if we use my elimination method, 10m and 30m are out leaving 17m, 19m, 21m and 25m. The average of 17m, 19m, 21m and 25m is 82/4 which is 20.5m. So, you can use this to take a decision.
If you subscribe to a QS, does the QS normally factor in inflation and exchange rates that can drastically affect the estimates?. I hope you know that most people building do not have all the funds at once. Is time value of money factored in by the QS?. Most people normally stagger a project. So, if QS for instance said foundation will cost x amount when exchange rate was N197 to a dollar, do you have to go back to the QS now that exchange rate is N370 to rework all the estimates? Yes. QSs take into consideration changes in economic variables viz a viz fluctuations in their Estimate. |
