You need the following;

-12mm diameter bar reinforcement (iron bar) = 20 Lengths
- 8mm diameter bar reinforcement = 14 lengths

Please note that no steel was used for foundation
The bricklayer advised me to do the steel work once and for all in order to save cost.

Paying for professional services rendered by an engineer could take one or more different forms.

As a client, do you intend to start the project and let it run till the project throughout a period of time?

Or you intend to raise the project to a certain stage and continue at a later time?

If you've the financial base to start and finish the project at a go; then it's advisable to negotiate the engineer's fee for the whole duration of the project.

However, if you intend to execute the project in stages due to finance or any other reason, then I'll advise that you negotiate his fees based on each stage of the project that you're going to follow during the execution of the project.

Is it bit by bit as work progress. Example, foundation to DPC; DPC to lintel. Etc

Or is it to negotiate all at once, say from start to finish.

Based on the prevailing building materials market, I will advise you exercise patience till lockdown is lifted.

Prices of building materials have increased at the moment because supply chains have been disrupted as a result of coronavirus.

Also considering movement of materials and labour to site won't be easy due to restrictions in movements.

I told him to make a reasonable supply of sand for all the items of work. As for the reinforcement for the column base, it has been captured in the measurement for reinforcement.

Good evening.

The dimensions of the Septic tank / soak away is given as Length = 3.00m, breadth = 1.80m and depth = 3.90m (13feet) according to you. Although I seriously doubt the feasibility of your depth, I'll do justice to it nonetheless.

Estimate of materials for proposed works;
1) Excavation 21m3 @ 1000/m3 = 21,000.00
2) Columns, 4nr, size 225mm x 225mm x 3900mm depth.
- cement 6 bags
_ 12mm reinforcement 6 length
_ 10mm reinforcement 5 length
3) 225mm blockwall = 380 blocks (same quantity even if you're using 150mm block)
_ cement 4 bags
4) reinforced concrete cover and oversite concrete to the base
_ Cement 10 bags
_ 12mm Dia. Reinforcement 7 lengths
5) 25mm x 300mm x 3600mm softwood as for work 5 lengths
_ 50mm x 50mm x 3600mm bracing 4 length
6) Plastering
_ Cement 6 bags
7) Make a reasonable supply of sand.

That's the quantity of materials needed for he job based on your dimensions.

The information you provided is not adequate to give you the correct quantities of materials and labour.

I'll advise you that you state the capacity of the reinforced concrete tank.

For example, you say it has a capacity of 5000 litres or what have you. Or better still, get a drawing.

Then, it will be scientifically possible to get the answers you seek.

Good evening.

If my input is not too late, I would like to proffer the solution.

Although you didn't state your concrete mix ratio and location if the job so as to the price of materials there, I'll still do my best.

Being an oversite concrete (commonly called German Floor), I want to assume the [b]concrete mix ratio to be 1:2:4 [/b]because it's like to be reinforced with BRC WIRE MESH.

Hence, volume of concrete = 300 * 0.1 = 30 cubic metres.
Thus; Cement equals 30 * 6 = 180 bags (50kg per bag)
Sand equals 30 * 0.44 * 1.58 *1.2 = 25 tons approximately (including wastages)
Granite equals 30 * 0.88 * 1.33 *1.2 = 42 tons approximately (including wastages)

If you also need cost of labour, quite this answer.

You need to provide more specific information like height of the fence and by acre what's the area of the land?

Now, answering the question bases in the following assumptions:

1 acre = 4,046 sqm (standard area)
Now, we can get the length and breadth of the land from this area, 4,046sqm

Let the land be square in shape, that means both the length and breadth are equal.

Hence Length = Breadth = 63.61metres

That means the perimeter of the land
= 4 * 63.61 = 254.44metres

Now, assuming you've 2 courses of blockwall in the foundation and 8 courses of blockwall as the height,

Hence the total height of the fence is 10 courses which is approximately 2.50m.

Therefore total area for the blockwall = 254.44 * 2.5 = 636.1 sqm

Let's assume that the length of the gate is 3.60m (main gate) and 1.20m (pedestrian gate), that means total length = 3.6 +1.2 = 4.80m

Thus, area of the gate equals 4.8 * 2.1 (height of fence above ground level) = 10.08 sqm

Net area of blockwall = 636.10 - 10.08 = 626.02sqm

Total number of blocks = 626.02 * 10 = 6260 blocks.

That's from a sound quantity surveyor.

"Inventory Officer" Vs "Quantity Surveyor'.

Quantity Surveying requires 5 years education plus 3 years working experience to become a registered QS by both the regulating bodies - NIQS and QSRBN. Even as an unregistered QS, it is almost impossible to hire graduates from other fields to do professional quantity surveying duties in any organisation. What am I driving at? Only trained Quantity Surveyors can do QS duties.

Now, Inventory Officer. Any graduate of any discipline can be adapted to perform the duties of an inventory officer.

What's the implications of these two scenarios?

It can be inferred from these scenarios that building a career in QS is more defined and specialized than a career in inventory management.

Needless to add that, as a registered QS, you can operate your consultancy firm offering quantity surveying services.

Make your decisions based on this explanation.

You really do not understand the core competencies of a Quantity Surveyor.

Engineering Degree or Quantity Surveying Degree, which one? They are not the same thing. And due respect to the Quantity Surveyors, but this man is a prime example of the faulty appointments we give in this country. A quantity surveyor has no business heading engineering services or a project team. It's not done anywhere. It is wrong because he doesn't have the prerequisite training. It is not mentioned anywhere that he went for further training in Architecture, Civil Engineering or Project Management.

The implication of this is that, all projects under him will be given out as contracts, which is not totally wrong but the problem is that the directorate he heads will never see growth or expansion meaning that professionals who should get jobs will not get employed. Up until now, I never knew the CBN has an engineering services department because most of their projects are executed by third parties.

In addition with company of your lawyer, it's a very good practice to have a town and urban planner with you when buying a piece of land.

Information that town and urban planners possess when it concerns land use cannot be overemphasized.

Kudos to you, Boay, for creating a wonderful thread about Quantity Surveyors. I always say that Quantity Surveying profession is the missing gap in the high profile corruption recorded among almost government contracts. Starting from budgeting of capital expenditure of both federal and state annual budgets to actual procurement of these infrastructural developments.

I am excited by the progress we have made hitherto, however, a lot could still be done.
