Army Describes Shiites’ Clash As Most Unfortunate

The Nigerian Army has described the clash between members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria and some soldiers as ‘most unfortunate’.

The disclosure was made on Sunday in a statement by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman.

According to the Army’s statement, “Saturday’s incident involving clashes between detachments of the Nigerian Army, accompanying the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General T.Y. Buratai and followers of Sheikh Ibrahim El Zakzaky, suspected to be members of the Shiite sect in Zaria, leading to loss of lives as a result of the Shiite group members’ blocking roads and not allowing other passers-by to go about their lawful businesses and activities, was most unfortunate”.

The Army noted that the Nigerian Constitution guaranteed the rights of any group of people, including Sheikh El Zakzaky’s followers, to hold a peaceful march or procession unhindered while it also guaranteed other people’s rights of way on public highways.

It said for couple of years, the group has been distressing road users in the course of occupying public spaces.

The Nigerian Army said police will investigate the clash

“It is important to note that over the years, this group has subjected ordinary citizens using public roads to untold hardship, delays, threats and disruption simply because they insist on using public space irrespective of the inconvenience and hardship on other law abiding citizens and motorists,” the statement read.

While urging the residents to go about their daily activities, the Army expressed dissatisfaction with the act and added that the Police would investigate the matter.

“This cannot be tolerated and must stop. As soon as order is restored to the situation in Zaria city and environs, the Police will conduct an enquiry and the public will be informed.

“In the meantime, the public is advised to go about their lawful business and report any suspicious persons or incidents to the Police,” the Army further said in the statement.

ArmyThe Nigerian Army has debunked rumours that the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, was arrested by soldiers at his residence and his wife killed.

The assertion was made by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Mechanised Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Adeniyi Oyebade, in company of the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police and other senior Army officers on Monday.

General Oyebade disclosed that the Islamic cleric and his wife were rescued alive during the bloody clash between the sect members and soldiers, adding that they were in the Army protective custody.

He narrated how members of the movement attacked the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, who was on his way to pay a courtesy visit to the Emir of Zazzau.

According to him, the Shiite members blocked the Army Chief’s convoy along Sokoto Road in Zaria, and attacked his vehicle with dangerous weapons.

The General stressed that all entreaties by some senior officers for the sect members to leave the road were resisted, a situation which he said prompted the soldiers in the convoy to apply minimum force against them.

He said that in the process of using minimum force to subdue the sect members, both parties recorded some casualties while stating that the attack on the Army Chief’s convoy was pre-meditated and planned to assassinate him.

General Oyebade said that the sect over the years, had taken laws into their hands, unleashing terror on innocent citizens within the places they have their shrines and activities.

He warned sect members within the Northwest zone to be law abiding and not to unleash violence on security forces and members of the public as such action would not be condoned by the Army.

On his part, the Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu, said that the Shiite members had never obtained Police permit or respected any constituted authority whenever they were carrying out their functions.

He called for more cooperation from citizens and religious organisations as the security agencies strive to protect their lives and property.

" It is true that the Shiites are targeted for some infractions that would be tolerably condoned if perpetrated by mainstream Muslim groups and even genuine Shia grievances are dismissed as the intra-Muslim affair that they are by non-Muslim groups, or as illegitimate ranting of a heretical group by the mainstream sunni majority."

the above says it all. and then followed by possible external influences that have to do with middle east politics.

when other religious groups block roads, no one even throws a stone at them, talk less of shooting them. when the Shia have their processions, even though they may not be the best organized, then everybody complains and by "coincidence" a military vehicle is found plying that route.

when Jonathan's convoy used to be stoned in the north, no one was killed. is army chief higher than president? now aboki is lecturing others about civility and maintaining order.

then who gave the order for the "revenge attacks" that included attacks far away from the incident of road block and innocent people elsewhere, even though from the same organization and faith, got massacred? so the army interpreted a stone throw as an "Assassination Attempt"!!!

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has called on the Nigerian government to take “prompt and serious” action to prevent further violence against Muslims in the African country.

In a telephone conversation with his Nigerian counterpart Geoffrey Onyeama on Monday, Zarif expressed “deep concern” over the recent bloody clashes, which broke out between Muslim worshipers and government troops in Nigeria’s northern city of Zaria.

The Nigerian government is expected to take serious and prompt measures to contain violence, maintain calm and protect the lives of Muslims, Zarif said.

The Nigerian foreign minister, for his part, expressed hope that consultations with the country’s senior officials would lead to the restoration of calm to the region and prevent the escalation of clashes and violence.

At least 15 people were killed and many more injured after clashes erupted in Zaria, in Kaduna state, on Saturday.

Reports said soldiers opened fire on Shia Muslims attending a ceremony in Hussainiyyah Baqeeyatullah, a religious center in the northern city. The Shias had reportedly stopped the convoy of Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai as the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim al-Zakzaky, was planning a speech in the religious center.

Authorities accuse the Shia cleric of trying to assassinate the Nigerian army chief, a charge that he has vehemently denied.

Following the incident, Nigerian forces raided the home of the top Shia cleric and arrested him after killing several of those protecting him, including one of the group’s senior leaders and its spokesman.

Some reports had put the death toll at about 20 but the Islamic Movement of Nigeria said the army had killed hundreds of its members.

Since the arrest, the fate of Zakzaky remains unknown.

christopher123:
Sunni vs Wahabi

The major difference between Sunni and Wahabi is the beliefs and rituals. Sunnis are in majority and almost 90% percent of Muslims around the world belong to Sunni sect whereas the members of Wahabi movement are located in Saudi Arab. There are a few main and major as well as many secondary differences between the Sunni and Wahabi Muslims which caused these sects to be cut off from each other and emerge independently.

The major difference between them is that Wahabis believe that Prophet Muhammad should be praised only as a human being whereas Sunnis show extra special care and respect towards the Prophet of Islam.

Sunni Muslims celebrate the birthday of the Holy Prophet and arrange Meelaad. Meelaad is a form of gathering in which the Sunni Muslims get together and praise the Holy Prophet. The birthdays of Sufi saints are also celebrated with much dedication and enthusiasm. The day of their deaths are commemorated in the form of Urs. Wahabi Muslims do not believe in celebrating and practicing all these events which are very strongly rooted in Islam. Wahabis call these practices of events as unlawful and wrongful innovations. Wahabis also believe that this is as close as to shirk or polytheism and Sunnis follow the ways of infidel Hindus.

Sunni Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad is Nur and still present in this world. Whereas Wahabis do not believe in using pious individuals as intermediaries when asking Allah as they consider it shirk or polytheism. Sunnis believe in the saints and mysticism whereas Wahabis do not believe in mysticism, intercession and prostration as well. Sunni Muslims visit the tombs of the saints and perform tawassul for the blessings of Allah whereas it is the greatest sin for a Wahabi.

Sunni Muslims believe in four imams of fiqah or Islamic laws such as Hanfi, Hanbli, Malakii and Shaafeyii whereas Wahabi does not follow an Iman in Fiqh. Wahabi Muslims are a group of fundamentalists and have an orthodox version Islam. Wahabis in Saudi Arab do not allow their females to work side by side with their men and they also are not allowed to drive a car. The women are treated as third rate citizens and they are bound to wear a long abayaa or garment to cover them from head to toe. Sunni Muslims are moderate and believe in the equality of women as suggested by Islam.

There are many differences present in their rituals of praying, marriage ceremonies, dresses etc. Wahabi Muslims have separate mosques and schools. Wahabi Muslims are followers of Mohammed ibn Abdul Wahab in the 18th century in Arabia, and his movement came up against a lot of opposition from the Indians Sunni Muslims. Members of the Wahab movement in Saudi Arabia believe their role as a restorer or reformer to free Islam from negative deviances, heresies, innovations, superstitions and idolatries. Wahabis prefer to eliminate music and listening to songs. They are against watching television and drawings of living things which contain a soul.

Summary

1. Wahabi Muslims are followers of Muhammad ibne Abdul wahab present in the 18th century in Saudi Arabia whereas Sunni Muslims are followers of Prophet Muhammad and his companions.

2. Sunni Muslims believe in intercession and mysticism whereas Wahabis call them as deviants and wrongful innovations in Islam.

3. Sunni Muslims strictly follow one of the four schools of thoughts or madhabs of fiqah or Islamic jurisprudence whereas Wahabis follow their sheikh.

4. Wahabis do not observe annual Sufi festivals, events or the birthday of Prophet Muhammad.

5. Sunni Muslims wear charms and believe in healing powers unlike Wahabi beliefs like visiting tombs or shrines of saints.

while your explanation is largely correct, but you aim so much at the trivial differences while forgetting that Wahhabis are part of Sunni Islam. more or less, you can say Wahhabis are radical Sunnis.

generally, Shias and Sunnis have coexisted very well over the centuries as people. but for the Wahhabis (in Saudi Arabia) referred to as salafists (elsewhere), they declare Shias as heretics/apostates and they emphasize on takfirism, declaring those who differ with them in terms of beliefs as infidels who should therefore be killed. this is the doctrine that wahhabi oriented takfiri groups like boko haram, al shabab, ISIL, alqaeda (ad every other Sunni terrorist group) share in common. they hate anyone who holds a differing religious or even political belief to theirs and they aim to eliminate such difference by shedding blood. Sunnis largely do not follow this doctrine; unfortunately, since wahhabis parade themselves as Sunnis, and the ruling family in saudi (where islam's holiest places are found) is wahhabi, sunnis are very much prone to being infected with wahhabism. yes, you read right! i used the word "infected" because Wahhabi takfirism is a big disease to humanity.

Should in case these Muslims decide to start their new round of terrorism, I think they should direct all their grievances towards all the military barracks in their area and forgive the civilians..........thanks

Shias are not Wahhabis. They don't go around killing civilians in churches and mosques. Shias themselves are victims of terrorism the world over.

And for those lying about warning shots and then claiming they were pleaded with, does all that justify killing hundreds of people ? Is the Nigerian army made up of children who kill people over who should pass first?

You liars and supporters of crimes against humanity should make up your mind. It is either they were pleaded with or they wanted to assassinate the army chief. It can't be both. How could the army have pleaded with evidently, as the pic shows, unarmed Trekkers of men, women and children, and still sell the BS that the army chief was under assassination attempt? You have killed them and you still lie against the dead. Is the NA becoming a gossip columnist interpreting events and spreading gist to suit their mood?

This is shameful. And the international community is watching. Even in New York and London Shiites hold processions. Why should they be killed in Nigeria?

And all of a sudden northerners are law abiding citizens who don't block roads. You need to go to Agege and other places and see how Sunnis block roads on Fridays. Churches do the same on Sunday's. Yet no one is killed. Jonathan's convoy used to be stones in the north and the almajiris would boast about it. No one uses to be shot. What is happening? Genocide against harmless Shias is not justified in Nigeria. Nigeria is not a Wahhabi state. Nigerians should be free to choose their beliefs , even if that means all Nigerians become Shia Muslims.

-CramJones

who the hell are you and who cares about your "take"? arent you the one that peddled false information that Putin made an anti-muslim speech? illiterate, or learned fool!

what is the truth in all of this and why should people be killed for blocking roads? Shiites (also spelled Shia)have been very peaceful, even after the military killed three of Sheikh Zakzaky's sons and 30 followers last year in Zaria, in another procession. Sunni Muslims and Christians do it (block roads) all the time on fridays, sundays and during crusades and religious processions marking palm sunday and the likes. were innocent lives wasted because they blocked road? or because they attempted an alleged assassination? and are we also meant to believe the army chief was actually talking to them and appealing to them as one of the pictures show, if they truly wanted him dead? and why was their center burnt? isnt it jungle justice? arent people innocent until proven guilty? are we in a democracy or in a military rule?

why are they "blood sucking"? last year, three of zakzaky's sons were killed. today it is reported a fourth has also been killed. the sheikh's whereabouts is unknown along with his wife and members after being "arrested".

be careful the evil you wish for others. it will one day befall you and those you love. you are talking here of Nigerian citizens and human beings. not animals or terrorists. even if the vehicle of the COAS was harassed, as someone rightly observed, Jonathan's vehicle used to be stoned in the north. yet no one was killed. what is the motive behind the repeated attacks on the Islamic Movement of Zakzaky and Shiites?

You still haven't answered. what is with the black like cultsts when Allah SWT has already told his believers never to wear attires with no other colour but black. what is with with the temporary marriages. You claim to believe in prophet SAW and know that insulting a woman is also insulting her husband. How illogical to let another man sleep with your wife. what's with the stopping people from going to their daily activities. is that the peace we preach. Imamates are innovations and you should know the punishments ordained by Allah when it comes to innovations. what's with the insults offered in some prayers. The problems the Shi'ites caused in the former regime will not repeat itself because Buhari won't take it. so in this regime I know you will manage and go extinct like the dinosaurs if you guys don't respect yourself. I hope and pray that Allah removes the veil that has covered your eyes. Allah SWT said that a person who sins for all his daily activities so much that sinning becomes acceptable to him Allah removes the fear of Him from his heart. Think and check every single daily activity I hope you see the truth before you meet your creator

This is your answer:

"And the servants of the Most Merciful Allah are they who walk on the earth in humbleness, and when the ignorant folks address them, they say: Peace (Salam) " (Holy Quran 25:63)

hayzed1090:

Salam alaykum brother, pls wat is the difference between imamate and caliphate? Thanks

Salam brother,

In Shia Islamic theology, Imamate is the leadership of the 12 holy Imams from the Ahlul-Bayt of the holy Prophet Muhammad. Imamate or Imamah means "leadership", both in the spiritual and political sense. The Shia hold that the 12 Imams are the rightful successors (caliphs) of the Prophet Muhammad chosen and appointed by Allah and declared by the Prophet; in other words the Prophet left a successor to carry on from where he stopped. They were imams, and not prophets as Muhammad (s) is the last prophet and messenger of Allah. The imams are interpreters of the Quran and brought no new revelation themselves. They inherited the prophetic knowledge of their forefather, the holy Prophey Muhammad. The last or the twelfth Imam is the Mahdi who is in Ghaibah and will return along with Prophet Isa (Jesus).

Caliphate in Sunni theology refers to the political succession to the Prophet. Sunnis believe anyone can succeed the Prophet and that the Prophet left no appointed successor. They believe the promised Mahdi is not the twelfth Imam and he has not been born yet. The office of caliphate is political and the caliph doesn't need to possess superior knowledge to lead the ummah. Sunnis therefore do not believe in the Twelve Imams. They believe Imam Ali (as) was the fourth caliph and that Abu Bakr was the first. The Shia believe Imam Ali was the first Imam, a position that combines a political and religious/spiritual office. To the Shia anyone aside from the Twelve Imams who claim to be successor to the Prophet or leader of the ummah is an unjust usurper and tyrant. This point is very sensitive because Sunnis feel it is an insult to people like Abu Bakr and Umar (the first and second Sunni caliphs) who were companions of the Prophet. Shia do not believe the companions of the Prophet are above scrutiny or criticism and hold that a number of them were unjust after the Prophet passed away and they oppressed the Prophet Muhammad's Ahlul-Bayt.

You can google more on the topic or even check the Islam section on nairaland for more info. Make sure to confirm your sources and use info from both sides to compare for a fair conclusion.

URGENT ALERT: Nigeria - Mallam Turi martyred; Army have invaded of house of Mu’allim Ibraheem al-Zakzaky

Saturday, 12 December 2015 22:52

Updated 09.31, 13 December 2015

Background

Mu’allim Ibraheem Al-Zakzaky (el-Zakzaky) is the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria. His movement has been highly critical of political corruption, the Nigerian-Israeli governmental relationships and intelligence sharing, Boko Haram and the relationship it has with facets of the Nigerian army, as well as other issues. The movement itself is heavily involved in educational and social programmes across Nigeria.

Last year at the annual pro-Palestine demonstrations some 40 people were shot and killed by an army unit, including 3 sons of Zakzaky. This is not the first time the movement has experienced violent suppression and abuses.

This week activists from the movement were killed in separate attacks. Today at the funeral of some of these in the Hussainiyah Baqiyatullah (Islamic Centre) in Zaria, an army unit approached and opened fire on unarmed mourners. Eyewitnesses report some 30 were killed.

At the time of writing there are reports that soldiers are advancing on the house of Al-Zakzaky, and that supporters have been forming a human shield to proetct the household. Reports state that 20 people from the human shield have been shot and killed by the military.

PRESS RELEASE - Nigeria: Military attacking home of leader of Islamic Movement

Saturday, 12 December 2015 23:12

Eyewitnesses are reporting that soldiers from the Nigerian army have launched an assault on the private residence of Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky in Zaria.ÂÂÂ
The assault is ongoing with the unarmed followers and supporters of the Sheikh reportedly trying to protect him with their bodies.

The attack follows this afternoon's violence in which soldiers opened fire at mourners attending a funeral in Zaria at Hussainiyyah Baqiyatullah. The funeral was for Muslims killed yesterday in violence attributed to Boko Haram, but which many in the area claim has connections with elements of the military.

Reports say approximately 30 people died in that incident.

Last year three sons of the Sheikh were targeted and killed by armed forces during an after an Al-Quds Day march in Zaria.

please don't be stupid. people should know enough and conduct proper research before they have opinions. Muslims believe in Allah as the one and only God and the Prophet Muhammad(S.A.W) as his last messenger. you have to believe that to be a Muslim. Shi'ites are not Muslims because they do not believe in the Prophet Muhammad. They claim that he was the wrong one. So again i repeat Shi'ites are not Muslims.

You are wrong madam. You are the one that needs research. Stop reading rumors and falsified information. I am Shia Muslim and that is not what we believe. We believe in Almoghty Allah as the one and only invisible God and lord and in Muhammad (s) as the last prophet and messenger of Allah. We differ with Sunni Muslims in that we believe in Imamate and Sunnis don't. Sunnis believe in caliphate.

Nigerian Army, Shiites in war of words after deadly Zaria attack that killed many

December 12, 2015Premium Times

The Nigerian Army and members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria Saturday have accused each other of instigating attacks that led to the dead of members of the movement on Saturday.

While the Army is accusing the Shiite followers of attempting to assassinate Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, the Islamic movement said soldiers simply decided to attack “defenseless people”.

A statement by the Army spokesperson, Sani Usman, said Shite members barricaded the road Mr. Buratai’s motorcade was passing to pay homage on the emir of Zazzau, and also attend a review parade by 73 Regular Recruit Intake at the Nigerian Army Depot in Zaria.

“The sect numbering hundreds carrying dangerous weapons, barricaded the roads with bonfires, heavy stones and tyres,” he said.

Mr. Usman also said the Shite members “refused all entreaties to disperse and then started firing and pelting the convoy with dangerous objects”.

He said the barricade was obviously a deliberate attempt to assassinate the Chief of Army Staff and members of his entourage.

“The troops responsible for the safety and security of the Chief of Army Staff on hearing explosion and firing were left with no choice than to defend him and the convoy at all cost as well as open up the barricaded road for law abiding citizens,” he said.

“This is in line with the Nigerian Army Rules of Engagement and Code of Conduct. This kind of behaviour will not be tolerated from any individual or groups and should not be allowed to repeat itself,” the statement said.

The army said the sect carried out the attempt on Mr. Buratai’s life on the instructions of Ibrahim El-zakzaky, the leader of the Shiite group.

The Shiites, however, said Mr. Usman was lying.

A statement signed by Isak K and posted on the website of the movement said the claim that the COAS “narrowly escaped assassination as a result of attack from Muslim brothers and Sisters of the Islamic Movement is a blatant lie”.

The statement said Mr. Usman’s claim “raises series of questions in the mind of right thinking people”.

It said members of the movement who were unarmed were gathered for a ceremony at their Husainiyyah base, to change the flag on the dome of the building to herald the beginning of the month of Rabiul /Auwal- the birth month of the Prophet of Islam, Prophet Muhammad.

“Any excuse given by the military as reason for besieging Hussainiyyah and firing for hours, leading to the death of yet to be specified number of people, is considered a lie of the decade,” the movement said.

A PREMIUM TIMES reporter in Kaduna said a member of the sect who asked not to be named for security reasons informed him that 20 members of the movement may have been killed, while many others were arrested.

He said soldiers opened fire on the sect members after the convoy of the Army Chief had passed.

“After the COAS passed, an army re-enforcement was deployed, shooting indiscriminately, killing over 20 of our members, taking away some of the dead bodies and arresting many of our members including women,” he said.

Meanwhile, the commissioner of police in charge of Kaduna state, Umar Ambursa, when contacted by telephone, said he was on his way to Zaria with the state governor Nasir El-Rufai to ascertain the extent of the incident.

“I am on my way with the governor to Zaria. Will brief you later,” he said.

The governor’s spokesperson, Samuel Aruwan, also said he was in the governor’s convoy and would only comment after getting the details of the incident.

The guy asked a right question. DHQ would have been more specific instead of labelling the attackers Shiites. The guys that were processing today, had/have a leader, they would have used the name of the leader instead of using the name Shiitea

You are very correct!

Not all Shiite Muslims are followers of Zakzaky. Even though of the estimated 10 million Nigerian Shiites, Zakzaky has about five to seven million followers.

Zakzaky is the head of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria.

Check:

www.islamicmovement.org

Zakzaky is the head of that organization. Not the head of Shiites as a whole, even if he follows Shia doctrines. Just like we cannot say Shekau is head of Sunnis. This generalization is very unnecessary and mistaken.

There are Shiites and Sunnis in every country around the world. Beliefs/religion have nothing to do with a movement or an organization. Otherwise, is Zakzaky head of Shiites in China?

The generalization is wrong. Imagine on 9/11 the US army declares: "Muslims attack the US". Or calling bin laden head of Muslims. Of course I am not comparing Zakzaky to bin laden because he leads an organization that has denied the allegations of violence thrown at it. And it has maintained it is peaceful, even after three of zakzakys sons and thirty others were killed last year, the group didn't resort to violence. I hope they maintain peace and not react. Again, the military claimed it was attacked. Each time no soldier gets injured but civilians get killed. I don't buy the story that the army chief was attacked. The Islamic movement claims the soldiers stormed it's center.

BREAKING: Kaduna Boils: Many feared dead as Shiites, military clash in Zaria

December 12, 2015

Sabi Tukur

Several persons are feared dead after soldiers reportedly opened fire on members of the Islamic movement of Nigeria in their Husainiyya base in Zaria, Kaduna state.

A resident of the area, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, said a truckload of soldiers came to the Husainiya area and surrounded it and “all of a sudden we heard gun shots and many people died”.

“The soldiers are still there and they have evacuated some of the corpses while others were taken by the site members” the witness said.

Another witness told PREMIUM TIMES more than 20 corpses were laying on the ground.
“The soldiers have killed many people here, possibly up to 20,” he said. “The leader of the sect, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky is leaving his home to where the soldiers are. He is saying he does not care if he is killed too.”

The spokesperson of the Army, Sani Usman, could not be reached for comments at this time.

The News Agency of Nigeria is however quoting Mr.Usman, a colonel, as saying the clash resulted from an assassination attempt on the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai.

The Army spokesperson reportedly said it was some suspected shiites who first attacked the motorcade of Mr. Buratai, a lieutenant general.
PREMIUM TIMES is unable to independently confirm that version of event at this time.
There has been a history of violence between members of the movement and the military.
A similar clash last year led to the death of many members, including the sons of the movement’s leader, Ibrahim Zakzaky.

Details later..

Muharram: Sheikh Zakzaky speaks on significance of Hijra and necessity for Islamic government

By Ibrahim Usman

During the first day of the Muharram mourning session (Majalis) on Friday (25/10/2014), which also coincided with the first day in the Islamic calendar, (Hijrah), Leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria His Eminence Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky spoke on significance of Hijrah, necessity for Islamic and how the process of establishing an Islamic government is now being ridiculed.

Sheikh Zakzaky who was speaking before thousands of people at the Hussainiyyah Baqiyyatullah, Zaria explained that, Hijrah was a turning point in the history of Islam by which the process of establishing a just system started.

He congratulated the Muslim Ummah for witnessing yet another year, saying for Allah to spare one’s life to witness a new day is worthy of thanks-giving.

He cited a Hadith from Imam Ja’afar al-Sadiq (AS) that says a day is worth celebrating to a servant if he did not commit a sin during the day. “It is a day worthy of celebrating for who did not commit a sin in the day, for many were given the opportunity but did not take good advantage of it”.

Sheikh Zakzaky pointed out that, the Hijra calendar consisted of 12 months right from creation as stated in the holy Qur’an, from which the Gregorian derived the idea of dedicating 12 months to its calendar.

According to the Leader, four months in the Hijrah calendar, Zul Qa’adah, Zul Hijjah, Rajab and Muharram are sacred in which war is prohibited, but that the month of Muharram is singled out as the month of grief and calamity in which the blood of Pious Ones (Household of the Holy Prophet) was spilled in the most crude manner in the plain of Karbala.

On Hijrah (Migration), he explained that the Holy Prophet migrated with his Household and companions not as a refugee, but as an invited guest by the people, and he later established an Islamic government. ”The lamented Holy Prophet established a government in Madinah not by force, but by good conduct and based on their support and allegiance to him”.

Sheikh Zakzaky lamented the manner at which the Islamic state exemplified by the Holy Prophet is now being ridiculed to means terrorism and violence. “Because they do not like a genuine Islamic state, they formed a terror cell with the name of an Islamic State. They want to show world that forming an Islamic state means bloodshed and terrorism”, he added.

Nigeria in which they created another terror cell called Boko Haram. “There is nothing like Boko Haram but the government itself, with the country’s Commander-in-Chief at the helm of affairs, the Nigerian military the members. They assign a section of the military to be the insurgents in disguise, while the other gullible and unsuspecting military fighting the insurgents. They are daily killing their colleagues and colleagues in the name of Boko Haram insurgency”.

The remark by the Leader ushered the beginning of Muharram.

Ashura Day1: Sheikh Speaks on the Hijrah of the Prophet + Pics

By K. Isah
More Pictures taken during the first gathering of Ashura Mourning at Husainiyyah baqiyatullah, Zaria on 1st of Muharram 1436( 24/10/14). Sheikh Zakzaky (H) delivered lecture on the fall of new Islamic Year 1436,

the significance of new year and bloody act of the enemies of the Prophet (SAWA) who killed his son Imam Husain(alaihis salam) in the sacred month of Muharram. Hijrah, Sheikh said, is Sunnah of the Prophet and it was not initiated by any body as claimed by those who want to give credits to thier favourite ones.

Sheikh further spoke on the migration of the Prophet to Madina, formerly yathrib. It was renamed the City of the Prophet ( ie Madina) or Tayyba. The city became the city of Islam with the coming ot the Prophet (SAWA), thus Islam got a center where Islam can be fully practiced. This shows the necessity of having Islamic state where it can be fully practised at full scale. From Madina Islam spread to other parts of Arabian peninsula to the extent it reached the whole world. For Islam to have center where it spread to other parts of the world is a necessity.

Islamic State of Iraq and Libid (ISIL) is a creation of enemies of Islam to give it a bad name, just like boko Haram in Nigeria. All this is done to show that Boko haram and ISIL are trying to establish Islam, thus portraying Islam in bad shape. Whereas when the first center or state of Islam was established- that is Madina by the holy Prophet, there was no single blood shedded. In contrast, the people of Madina received the Prophet warmly as they sing the praise of him to welcome him to the new city.

The Prophet entered Madina after having stayed for a while at Quba, waiting for his family members to arrive. Imam Ali (alaihis salam) left Makka with the family members of the holy Prophet. Before he left Makka he challenged the pagans to chase him if they are really strong enough to face him. A group of youths, instigated by thier masters, chased him to fight him. They could not face the young Ali, though one of them tried to challenge him but humiliated. The Imam arrived in Quba, where he met the holy prophet and together they entered Madina.

Those who claimed Islam flourished through war and fighting should know that Madina- the first Islamic center, received him and made him leader peacefully. Not only that the people of Madina defended their new leader against attacks by pagans and their allies with their blood and wealth. Madina became a center where Islam governed peacefully, without shedding of blood. Contrary to present new groups, who resorted to killings and destruct ions, on behalf of the enemies of Islam who created them.

Ziyara of imam Husain was recited by Leader and closing prayer.
