Listen to Okonjo Iweala's Igbo accent in English
PoliticsRe: Why Do Many Nigerians, Including Educated Ones, Show Inferior Mentality? by Ramnon2(op): 7:16pm On Sep 23, 2014
tpia: If you do not like the american accent then why are you there?

Move somewhere else nah.
Where did you read from me that I do not like the American accent. In your one-track mind the love of Igbo accent = dislike for American accent?
Have you also asked the Americans in Nigeria who do not speak with a Nigerian accent to leave Nigeria? Your inferiority complex is becoming palpable.
PoliticsRe: Why Do Many Nigerians, Including Educated Ones, Show Inferior Mentality? by Ramnon2(op): 7:14pm On Sep 23, 2014
Those foreigners in Hollywood who need to blend into the American mainstream might be overlooked if they think of accent change. But why would a Development professional like me who is having to deal with people from all over the world desperately need to change their accent?

Ban Ki Moon speaks English with a Korean accent
Ngozi Okonjo Iweala speaks English with an Igbo accent and still (2-I-C) headed the World Bank; And hey! She even schooled in Harvard and MIT (with those accents)
Oby Ezekwesili had an Igbo accent before becoming VP of the World Bank
Kanayo Nwanze heads IFAD with an Igbo accent

The accents of these people have not affected or diminished their responsibilities

Americans work in Nigeria, many for several years, and gained no single Nigerian accent

Only an inferior Nigerian (I mean those who had their native accents before leaving Nigeria) will take it upon themselves to desperately change their accent to sound American or British. Funny enough, the more they speak in their ''new accents'', the clearer it becomes that they are forcing such accents upon themselves. grin grin grin

tpia: you already defined it yourself in your first post.
Would you also say a German speaking English has a thick accent?
PoliticsRe: Why Do Many Nigerians, Including Educated Ones, Show Inferior Mentality? by Ramnon2(op): 7:00pm On Sep 23, 2014
chulla12: Admit fault, how?

Seriously it is easier for some adults to lose an accent without coaching.

What is the big deal about this?!
The deluded self denying baboon thinks having an American accent is so great that I must pay money to gain it. What a damned foool claiming to be non-Nigerian.
Christianity EtcRe: Why I Published The TB Joshua Bribery Audio - Nicholas Ibekwe by Ramnon2: 5:10pm On Sep 23, 2014
PerfectFortune: Nicolas Ibekwe has finally found a way to get public attention and become popular and it seems to be working for him already.

Press everywhere in the world receives money to write good stories about somebody or an events. The Briths do it through BBC while the Americans use the CNN and others.

They call it image laundering....
But no British or American public figure will bribe journalists not to publish the fact. In fact, any attempt at that will land them in court. Yes, no?

ISpiksDaTroof: See, youre just a dummy! I made that analogy to let you see that when you speak like your hosts they quickly see you as one of them as opposed to when you sound different. I bet even if you were offered a Billion dollars you couldn't lose your accent, so stop pretending like it's your choice.
Dummy, I do not need to lose my accent; would not, even if offered a billion. It's inferior homo sapien Nigerians like you who do everything to be non-Nigerian. Are you not the Yoruba man claiming to be non-Nigerian? Why do Westerners and Chinese in Nigeria not speak like Nigerians? Goat head.

Any individual Nigerian living outside Nigeria who chooses to could lose their Nigerian accent(s); it is a personal thing. But to expect every Nigerian to do so is foolish. I made that clear to the Nigerian professor.

When I see Westerners in Nigeria speaking English with a Nigerian accent, then I can consider doing so here.

In fact, many colleagues here have walked up to me telling me they love my accent and have always wanted to hear something foreign.

So for now it's my Igbotic accent all the way. That has not stopped me from being an invited speaker in uncountable global meetings.

Good for you that you attend a lot of International forums, but you need to learn to properly comprehend what you read or just be quiet if you have no idea about the topic at hand.
Take a second look at the OP of this thread and revise that idiootic comment of yours. Thank you.

Like I said Age 12 is the cut off mark to lose your old accent without professional coaching. Has Okonjo-iweala or those European friends of yours lived here since their childhood and is now in their 50's?
FYI, I was not 12 when I came to the US. In any case, the Nigerian prof who had asked about speaking in an Igbo accent realized the folly of his expectation and backed off.

ISpiksDaTroof: Same reason you go to China and it's advisable to learn Mandarin.
Duh! Learning Mandarin is not the same as expecting an American (for example) to speak mandarin with a Chinese accent. I am not surprised that you are equating language with accent; you have always been a confused, identity crisis-ridden fellow.
PoliticsRe: The Dangers Of GM Crops And The Tyranny Of Monsanto In Africa by Ramnon2: 4:10pm On Sep 23, 2014
For now, Africans should just keep their native gene banks away from Monsanto, Syngenta, BASF and others. But GM crops are are not all bad; it depends on what purpose. We can do GM for non-food crops such as cotton, ornamental plants and others. We can also do GM for food crops for specific purposes such as drought resistance (DR). The important thing is to be sure that no major genetic fitness is lost by the introgression of the new DR gene. We should also ensure that the selection maker is not one of those AB resistance markers. I agree that a lot needs to be made known about GM technology, and Africans are usually the last to know these things.

tpia1: you modify your accent so people can understand what you are saying? huh

even within nigeria you modify your home accent to match wherever you are, in order to communicate.
The important thing is to speak clearly, coherently and understandably, and these I have mastered long before even coming to America.
I hope you read that too

Stop diverting this thread, pls. Ramnon2 is not English. It is not any language. It is just a coinage I made for Nairaland. And, I have an Igbo pseudonym of course. Thank you.

Why would anybody even try to lose their accent?

joseph1832: Its simple,They've not fulfilled the socratic dictum: "man know thyself". For any man who truly knows himself, will never feel inferior to any man, be him an american or south african. "Education is an eye opener".
My sentiments, exactly.
PoliticsRe: Why Do Many Nigerians, Including Educated Ones, Show Inferior Mentality? by Ramnon2(op): 3:30pm On Sep 23, 2014
ISpiksDaTroof: He speaks like an Ibo man because his accent (like most Nigerian accents) is one of the hardest to lose and not because he "Chose" not to lose it. If he arrived in this country, say, prior to his 12th birthday of course he would speak like his hosts, just like if an American child lives in your country at that age he'd develop the speech process of his hosts. This has nothing to do with "National Pride".
You're speaking like that because you can NEVER lose that accent without professional coaching.
I am a regular attendee of international forums; I am yet to see any Indian, Chinese, German, French, Russian etc, raised and educated in those countries and now living in the US who tries everything in his power to change his accent to American. Only some complex-ridden Africans (especially some Nigerians) do so. The important thing is to speak clearly, coherently and understandably, and these I have mastered long before even coming to America.

Ask Okonjo Iweala - who even studied in the US- the accent she used to manage the World Bank for many years.

Orunto: This is business. When marketing a product, you talk in the style and language of the market. This is superior mentality. As I am concerned, you are the inferior being trying to remain maumau in the US even when you are the President of the market.
See this inferior malu. So the American/Briton working in Nigeria who do not (and do not) adopt Nigerian accents are inferior in Nigeria? You are a proper goat.

EUROBOMBER: A 30-year old man, Olaniyan Oluwakayode, reportedly ra.ped a 20-year old girl in his apartment at Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area Lagos, and uploaded pictures of her taken during the act on the Internet.

The victim who hails from Akwa Ibom state alleged that despite pleas from his sister, Oluwakayode still went ahead to upload the photos on a popular social media, Vanguard reports.

Recounting what happened, the victim said Oluwakayode had never been her boyfriend or fiancée, but a guy who had been asking her out for a long time but she had refused.

On her way back from work last week, on Tuesday, he was said to have ambushed her and dragged her into the bush. There, he threatened her with a knife saying if she shouted, he would kill her. From the bush he dragged her to his house where he locked the door and ra.ped her.

From the bush he dragged her to his house where he locked the door and ra.ped her.
This is nearly incredulous. Is the house in the bush, so that no one saw him dragging her into it?

PoliticsRe: Nigeria: Jonathan's Ambition, A Threat To Igbo Presidency - Udenta O. Udenta by Ramnon2:
Udenta should go and sit down somewhere. Every Igbo should suport Jonathan to complete his tenure. There is no vacancy in Aso Rock until 2019. After Jonathan it could go back to the North (a decent northerner, not APC Boko Haram northerner) or to the Igbos. There is no hurry to the presidency as Nigeria is here to stay. And if by the very unlikely chance that Nigeria divides, then Igbos can rule themselves.

The question is what has the presidency benefited the people from where the president comes? Igbos should not allow few Yoruba-Igbos brainwashed into beating the Yoruba drum to bamboozle them into unnecessary hurry to Aso Rock. At the right time, the right Igbo man shall lead Nigeria to its predestined place.

oops!!! This is state news, 4 years old.

OrlandoOwoh: Diobu is Ikwerreland, but not dominated by them. The number of Ikwerre in miles 1 and 2 is low when compared with mile 4 and above.
Of course it is part of PH metropolis, so expected to be an admixture of Nigerians. Again, the Ikwerre dominated areas will be more mono-ethnic, so variation from more diverse Ikwerreland should not be a surprise, no?
PoliticsRe: Nigeria Has The Best Spoken Pidgin English And Various Variants Of It. by Ramnon2: 9:43pm On Sep 22, 2014
OrlandoOwoh: Diobu, Town and Borokiri are the best in Pidgin in PH. I'm not so much impressed with the variant spoken in Ikwerre dominated areas from Mile 3 upto Rumuola and beyond.
Where is Diobu again? Is it not part of Ikwerreland? As far as I know -may be things have changed now- mile 1, 2,3 4 all along Ikwerre Road, are Ikwerreland
