Five banks closed by U.S. regulators WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Bank regulators closed four Midwestern banks and one in Arizona on Friday, bringing to 89 the number of U.S. banks to fail this year as deteriorating loans continue to take their toll on financial institutions. The closed banks were Vantus Bank in Sioux City, Iowa, InBank in Oak Forest, Illinois, Platinum Community Bank of Rolling Meadows, Illinois, the First Bank of Kansas City in Missouri and the First State Bank of Flagstaff, Arizona, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp said. Vantus Bank was the largest of the five institutions to close, with total assets of $458 million and total deposits of about $368 million. InBank had total assets of $212 million and total deposits of about $199 million while the First State Bank of Flagstaff, Arizona had total assets of $105 million and total deposits of approximately $95 million as of July 24. The First Bank of Kansas City, which has one branch, had total assets of $16 million and total deposits of about $15 million. The Office of Thrift Supervision said that Platinum Community Bank had total assets of $148 million while the FDIC estimated its assets as $345.6 million as of August 29, 2009. The five failures will cost the FDIC deposit insurance fund an estimated $401.3 million, the agency said. In 2008, 25 U.S. banks were seized by officials, up from only three in 2007. The insurance fund's balance dipped to $10.4 billion at the end of the second quarter, but that level does not include the additional $32 billion that the FDIC has set aside to cover the cost of bank failures over the next year. In September, Seattle-based lender Washington Mutual became the biggest bank to fail in U.S. history, suffering from losses from soured mortgages and liquidity problems. The FDIC will insure up to $250,000 per account at the closed banks. The agency also has running a tally of problem banks that its examiners closely monitor. At the end of the second quarter, 416 undisclosed institutions were on that list. FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair has said bank failures will remain elevated even as the economy begins to recover because the bank industry is continuing to recognize loan losses and clean up their balance sheets. She has said the industry's woes are migrating from residential loans and complex securities to more conventional types of retail and commercial loans that have been hit hard by the recession. Police are left wondering how he sleeps at night ![]() BEXLEY, Ohio — Police are hopeful that surveillance images can help them identify the man who held up a bank late Friday morning. The robbery occurred at the First Bexley Bank, located on East Main Street, at about 10:50 a.m., the FBI said. A man wearing a mask and carrying a handgun entered the building and ordered everyone inside to the floor. He then ordered a teller to fill a blue pillowcase with cash. The teller complied and the robber fled the bank on foot. He was last seen running northbound from the building. The FBI on Friday released surveillance images showing the robber outside of the bank. Investigators said the man was also recorded inside the building by a surveillance camera, but they did not show his face because of the mask. Anyone with information about the robbery was asked to call Bexley police at 614-559-4444. for SOURCE: Click here |
Drive-thru ministry attracting motorists in Pinal Matthew Cordell, left, prays with John Templeton as he operates a prayer stand along Hunt Highway near Queen Creek. Roadside fruit vendor was the inspiration for minister's "drive-thru prayer stand" Vendors set up along Hunt Highway in San Tan Valley to peddle everything from turtles and mattresses to tamales. But a newcomer to the scene doesn't have a ware to sell. Hand-painted fiberboards welcome motorists to Matthew Cordell's roadside stop with this message: "Prayer Stand, Drive Thru Open." Cordell, 38, has become a familiar sight in recent weeks to morning commuters on Hunt Highway east of Gary Road. He's there from 6-10 a.m. on most Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, waiting for customers with his "assistant," a friendly 5-year-old Chihuahua named Skye. People stop by to make a variety of prayer requests, from the healing of ailments to the safety of children going to college for the first time. "They pull in, I go up to the window, we can pray and they pull out," Cordell said. "And people know they can have their needs met. It seems to be a real blessing." One woman pulled in on her way to Urgent Care for chest pains. He said the pains subsided with prayer, and she went home instead. In another instance, Cordell said a man with a severe brain injury began improving following his intercession. Cordell doesn't look the part of a minister, nor does he want to be one. He's a former body-shop worker who felt God was calling him to missions work. A roadside fruit vendor was the inspiration for his prayer ministry. That was in the spring, but he said he wasn't ready. Illness and personal issues sidelined his plans until mid-August, when his pastor began preaching a series about leaving one's comfort zone behind. It was like "a kick in the head," Cordell said. "When it's something God wants you to do, you can't get away from it," he said. "You keep running from it, and misery is just going to follow you. Once you (accept) this is what you're called to do, you're going to realize that the blessings were just waiting for you all along." Most people drive past the white canopy erected at the entrance of an empty fenced-in parking lot. Christian music pumps from car speakers, its volume competing with the din of passing traffic. The first prayer seekers of the day begin to show up about 7 a.m. On one recent morning, 32-year-old Sergio Alvarez pulled up in a black Nissan Sentra. His wife had given birth to their first child, a girl they named Brianna Isabella, less than two hours earlier. Alvarez, who was still wearing a hospital band on his wrist, asked for a prayer of blessing. Cordell clasped one of Alvarez's hands in both of his own and closed his eyes. "Dear God, what an incredible miracle, God, the miracle of life, Lord," Cordell said. "I want to pray a blessing on this child, God, that she'll have a healthy life, she'll grow up knowing you, Lord, and God that you'll give them the courage and strength and knowledge in you to bring her up in your ways." When the prayer was through, Alvarez thanked Cordell and promised to stop by a week later with his wife and the new baby. Pinal County Sheriff's deputies have stopped by, too, after passersby called 911 to report traffic being backed up for miles near the prayer stand. Cordell complied with the deputy's request to move the stand down the road but wasn't asked to leave completely. The Sheriff's Office and county code enforcers have been clamping down on roadside vendors accused of obstructing the right of way and trespassing on private property in San Tan Valley. District councilman Bryan Martyn said the county is exploring ordinances to manage them. "Right now, the rogue vendors, we need to control that aspect," Martyn said. "If you're in the right of way I'm going to have to ask you to move along in the interest of public safety." It's not clear whether the prayer stand falls in that category, but Martyn said he's intrigued by Cordell's mission and plans to stop by. "As a Christian brother I'm really interested in what he has to say. He wouldn't be out there if there wasn't a need in the community. Right now, a lot of people just need someone to listen to them." And Cordell does. He said people have been so open with him and quick to reveal things some might think taboo. He notes from each prayer request on his cell phone and often refers to the list when seeking divine intervention throughout the day. Cordell's goal is for people to hear about his prayer stand and start one of their own. A church in Chandler followed his lead by offering drive-thru prayer one evening last week. His wife asked him if he was upset about someone else taking his idea. "I said, 'What are you, crazy?'" he said, laughing. "That's what I wanted. It wasn't my idea, it was God's." for SOURCE: Click here |
Gani Fawehinmi From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Early life Fawehinmi, popularly called Gani, was born on 22 April 1938, into the Fawehinmi family of Ondo, in Ondo State and died on the 5th of September 2009 at age 71. His father, Chief Saheed Tugbobo Fawehinmi, the Seriki Musulumi of Ondo was a successful timber magnate, a great philanthropist, an opponent of excessive taxation of the poor and a deeply religious muslim leader. He was reported to have brought Islam to Ondo Town. Chief Saheed Tugbobo Fawehinmi died on 5 February 1963 at the age of 89 years. Gani's grand father was the Late Chief Lisa Alujanu Fawehinmi of Ondo, who engaged in several successful battles for and on behalf of the Ondo people in the nineteenth century. Hence, the appellation the 'Alujanun', which means spirit. He died at the age of 92. Gani had his early education at Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary School, Iyemaja - Ondo from 1947 to 1953 and his secondary school education at Victory College Ikare, a Christian School from 1954 to 1958, under the leadership of the Late Rev. While at University, his father died. He completed his degree in London with a measure of difficulty due to lack of funds(From his father). This involved doing various menial jobs in London. While in college, he was popularly known as "Nation" because of his passionate interest in national, legal and political affairs. He was an avid reader of Daily Times and West African Pilot, the most popular newspapers at that time. In 1993 Fawehinmi was awarded the biennial Bruno Kreisky Prize. This prize, named in honour of Bruno Kreisky, is awarded to international figures who advance human rights causes. In 1998, he received the International Bar Association's Bernard Simmons Award in recognition of his human-rights and pro-democracy work. In 1994 he and some other notable Nigerians formed the National Conscience Party of Nigeria which exists till today and he stood for a presidential election in 2003 under the umbrella of the National Conscience Party. Gani Fawehinmi became a holder of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) the highest legal title in Nigeria in September, 2001 Critic of Military Dictatorship and Corruption With his boundless energy he tenaciously and uncompromisingly pursues and crusades his beliefs, principles and ideals for the untrammelled rule of law, undiluted democracy, all embracing and expansive social justice, protection of fundamental human rights and respect for the hopes and aspirations of the masses who are victims of misgovernance of the affairs of the Nation. Dele Giwa In 1986, while Chief Gani Fawehinmi was Dele Giwa's Lawyer, the latter was killed in a bomb blast under suspicious circumstances . As a result of his activities chief Gani Fawehinmi, had been arrested, detained and charged to court several times. His international passport was seized on many occasions and his residence and Chambers were searched several times. He was beaten up time after time and was deported from one part of the country to another to prevent him from being able to effectively reach out to the masses among whom he was popular. His books were confiscated by the Federal Military Government and his library at Surulere , a suburb of Lagos were set ablaze. His law Chambers at Anthony Village, Lagos State, were invaded by persons suspected to be agents of the government 26 August 1994. The guards were shot, seriously wounding two of them. In the process of his crusades for the rule of law, the hopes and aspirations of the poor and the oppressed, he fought many battles against military dictatorship as a result of which he had been arrested several times by the military governments and its numerous security agents. He was dumped in many police cells and detained in several prisons between 1969 and 1996. His supporters have called him "the scourge of irresponsible governments, a sphygmomanometer with which the blood pressure of dictators is gauged, the veritable conscience of the nation and the champion of the interests and causes of the masses". His promotion to becoming the Senior Advocate of the country was delayed as a way to victimise him. Eventually, he got the award in 2003 i.e. the Senior Advocate of Nigeria. Rejection of National Award In 2008 Mr Gani Fawehinmi rejected the highest order that can be bestowed on a citizen by the Nigeria government—Order of the Federal Republic(OFR)—in protest of the many years of misrule since Nigeria's independence. Many Nigerians call him the people's president. Death Gani, as he is fondly called, died in the early hours of 05 September 2009 after a prolonged battle with Cancer. He was 71 years old. for SOURCE: Click here RIP . . . |

Owen Ali-Balogun, described as "a Tottenham man", knocked a prostitute unconscious before raping her & defiling her body. A VIOLENT Tottenham man has been jailed for eight years and placed on the sex offenders register for life after raping a prostitute he had knocked unconscious. Owen Ali-Balogun, 28, of Vartry Road, appeared at Lewes Crown Court, in East Sussex, this afternoon after being convicted at the Old Bailey on June 22. In the early hours of Wednesday December 3, 2008, the 43-year-old sex worker was soliciting in Seven Sisters when Ali-Balogun came out of an off-licence, approached her and propositioned her for sex. The pair entered a small park area at Manchester Road, in Tottenham, and Ali-Balogun started to touch her before handing over payment. When the victim rebuffed his advances he delivered a heavy blow to her head which knocked her unconcsious. It was then, when she was unable to defend herself or run away, that Ali-Balogun raped her and defiled her body. The victim woke to find her face bleeding and her body aching which resulted in extensive bruising to her back, neck and head. Sentencing Judge David Rennie said Ali-Balogun posed a "serious and significant risk to the public" having displayed a disturbing pattern of violence that was over and above a serious level of force. He added: "You chose to hurt and humiliate her for pleasure." The High Court judge imposed an indeterminate term with a compulsory eight years. Ali-Balogun, who gave the victim the finger during the trial, had been released from prison on licence just three weeks earlier following a robbery conviction. He will now have to serve the remainder of that term and his eight-year rape sentence will start in March 2012. After the attack the brave victim sought help from a passer-by and made her way to a friend’s house and was encouraged to report the incident to police. An investigation was launched and the woman was taken to The Haven, a specially designated place for survivors of Rape and Sexual Assaults, where she received support and was examined. Ali-Balogun was eventually caught after officers identified vital CCTV evidence of a man wearing clothing as described by the victim in the off-licence prior to the attack. DNA evidence obtained from the woman’s clothing identified Owen Ali-Balogun. On January 14, 2009, police searched his home and found a black hat with ear flaps and a black jacket that matched the clothing described by the victim and identified as being worn by the suspect on CCTV. He was arrested and charged on January 15, 2009. Investigating officer Detective Constable Amanda Christodoulou, of Haringey’s Sapphire Unit, said: "Owen Ali-Balogun’s conviction is testament to the strength and bravery of the woman who came forward and gave evidence. This was a callous, vicious attack and she still bears the scars of what this man did to her. "I feel honoured to have worked with such a brave woman and hope that she can try and move forward with her life, knowing her attacker has been taken off the streets. "We encourage victims of rape to have the confidence to come forward to police as soon as possible. Every single allegation will be investigated professionally and sensitively and we will do everything in our power to bring those responsible to justice". for SOURCE: Click here |

Robbers Abducted Boy Who Recognised Them, Then Took Him Away For Rituals https://www.tribune.com.ng/sat/15082009/images/feat2.jpg Lekan, the abducted boy IT was a tale of woe and sobbing for the family of Agboolas of 17D, Iwajowa area, around Awotunde Olosunde area of Olorunsogo, Akanran road, Ibadan, in the early hours of Saturday, July 25, 2009 as Olalekan Agboola, a nine-year-old Primary III boy was carried away by a gang of bandits who stormed their area. Olalekan Agboola is a grandchild of Mr. Moses Agboola and Mrs. Olufunke Agboola. According to them, Lekan, as fondly called, had been with them since birth because his biological father, one Akeem, impregnated, nine years ago, their daughter, Toyin, the biological mother of Lekan, and refused responsibility of the pregnancy. “Since the birth of Lekan, when we discovered that his father, Akeem, had refused to be responsible for the pregnancy, we had taken it up as our responsibility to train Lekan up, hence the surname, Agboola, he bears till today,” Mrs. Funke Agboola explained. According to the Agboolas, the robbers stormed their house at about 3.45 a.m that day, ransacking and asking them to surrender their money and other valuables. After dispossessing them, the robbers reportedly went away, only to return one or two minutes later and abduct Lekan. What could have prompted them to abduct Lekan? This seems the question anybody would ask. Or did the robbers primarily invade the house to kidnap the innocent boy? In truth, they did not come to steal humans, rather money and other treasures, but unfortunately, one event led to the other. Reports said that it was the innocent utterance of the boy that landed him in trouble. As the robbers were leaving the house, probably at the threshold, after stripping the head of the family, Mr. Moses Agboola of N510, Lekan was reportedly said to have uttered a statement which revealed that he could identify one of the invaders, named Rilwan. “Aunty Titi, a se buoda Rilwan ore buoda Kamo ni won n deru ba wa, meaning aunty Titi, can’t you see it is brother Rilwan, Brother Kamo’s friend, scaring us?” Lekan was reported to have spoken thus. “It was when they heard and knew that Lekan had been able to identify one of them that they came back and led him away,” Titi, Mr. and Mrs. Agboola’s daughter said. Early in the morning that same day, the incident was reported at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Ogbere, Akanran road, Ibadan. Before long, the police’s searchlight beamed around and Kamo was arrested, which subsequently led to the arrest of Rilwan. Initially, several arrests, which included the landlady of Rilwan, Kamo, who facilitated Rilwan’s procurement of accommodation in the area, Rilwan’s father, among others, were made. When Rilwan was nabbed by the police, he confessed to the offence and gave the police names and addresses of other members who took part in the operation. Subsequently, one Dayo Adesola, 20, and his father, Adebayo Adesola, 46, who is said to be the syndicate’s babalawo (priest) were arrested around Monatan area of Ibadan. According to investigation, Rilwan, 19, who was said to have allegedly changed accommodation more than five times this year, was said to have handed over the boy to Adebayo Adesola, who has refused to disclose where the boy was. It was also revealed that Rilwan’s real name is Sefiu as claimed by his father. The case currently has been transferred to the Homicide Section, State CID, Iyaganku. Efforts to speak with the police authorities proved fruitless as they claimed that the case was still being investigated. Nevertheless, the case was brought from mentioning at the Magistrate’s Court, Mapo, Ibadan, where Rilwan (Akin Hassan), Adebayo Adesola and Dayo Adesola were charged with conspiracy, robbery and kidnapping, while Chief Magistrate, Sunday Olutunde, adjourned the case till September 16. As the suspects were being returned to the custody of security agents, there were insinuations around the court premises that one of the suspects revealed to some inmates in the prison that some parts of the boy had been used for rituals. Speaking with Saturday Tribune, “I want to see Lekan dead or alive; if they’ve used some of his parts, they should give me the remaining body to bury; if they’ve not killed him, they should please return him to me , I beg well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in this case , ” Mrs. Funke Agboola cried out. for SOURCE: Click here |

Cleric Disowns Wife Of 15 Years In Court By Omobola Tolu-Kusimo IT was drama at Ketu Grade 'B' Customary Court when a clergyman with Celestial Church of Christ, Rufus Awoleye, told his wife of 15 years that he never married her but only assisted her as a girlfriend during the period. The plaintiff, Mrs. Wura Awoleye, Iya Ijo (mother of the flock) of the church had sued Awoleye, an evangelist-cum-shepherd for the dissolution of their marriage. Before the suit, the couple had lived together for 15 years. The union was blessed with a male child, who later died. Wura accused Awoleye of planning to kill her physically and spiritually, adding that "he beats me frequently and that there is no more love between us." Awoleye in his defence denied all allegations and claimed that they were meant to blackmail him. " The petitioner is my friend who on her own volition, decided to bear my surname for her convenience. There is no form of marriage either legal or customary between us and I challenge the petitioner to produce any such marriage documents in the court.' He disclosed that as a result of the suspicion of the petitioner that he was no longer serious with the relationship, she tried to burn his church. Awoleye therefore prayed the President of the court, Chief. Alfred Gbose to dismiss Wura's request because "there is no marriage of any kind between us," adding that "it was mere friendship." for SOURCE: Click here |

- a FYI ![]() Tourists warned over fake goods Holidaymakers could be fined thousands of pounds for buying fake designer gear when they go abroad, lawyers have warned. Authorities in countries like France and Italy are stepping up a campaign against those who peddle counterfeit goods as well as those who buy them. Fines in France can rise up to 300,000 euro (£260,000). Copyright solicitor Nicholas Phillips is warning tourists against bringing back fake designer sunglasses, sports gear, handbags and watches. He told the BBC: "The most likely thing to happen to British tourists if they walk through customs with a counterfeit Louis Vuitton bag is customs officers will tap them on the shoulder and take it away from them. "They will also potentially fine them twice the value of the original bag, not the fake. [That] may run to several thousand euros - imagine twice that." The European Commission has raised fears about the growing involvement of organised international criminal gangs in the market for fake goods. It said recently: "Without doubt, one of the principal methods of dispersing counterfeits is the 'ant-like' traffic of tourists returning home from holiday, bringing back souvenirs." Susie Winter, director general of the Alliance Against Intellectual Property Theft - which represents creative industry - said: "We would urge people to think about where their money is going. "These are not cheeky chappies making an honest living on a Sunday morning, these are hardened criminals." for SOURCE: Click here |
