there has to be more to this story. Maybe he was proselytizing. I don't see why a school will suspend a student just for reading the bible. If it is true then that's a shame. |
Chinese manufacturers are now outsourcing to Africa America is still pretty sore over the millions of jobs — including an estimated 2.4 million in the last decade — that have been outsourced overseas, especially to China, where labor was cheap and plentiful, and economic growth rapid. But in recent years Chinese manufacturers have begun doing the same thing — shifting manufacturing from China, where wages are rising rapidly — to cheaper countries, including ones in Asia, and especially sub-Saharan Africa. Why? This week, Huajian Shoes' President Zhang Huarong — whose 3,500 workers in Ethiopia produced two million pairs of shoes last year — told Bloomberg: "Ethiopia is exactly like China 30 years ago. The poor transportation infrastructure, lots of jobless people." And while that may create all sorts of logistical and electricity supply problems, it also creates a massive opportunity for cheap labor and fast economic growth. China's average manufacturing wage is 3,469 yuan — or around $560 — per month. That may not be much by American standards, but pay at Huajian's Ethiopian factory ranges from $30 a month to about twice that for supervisors. The bigger picture is that China is now Africa's largest trading partner, passing the United States in 2009. In 2012, China's trade with Africa reached $198.5 billion. And according to Mthuli Ncube and Michael Fairbanks of the Financial Times: "More than 2,000 Chinese private businesses are in Africa." - - John Aziz |
Chimamanda Adichie is a brilliant woman. Nigeria needs more women like her. davidif: Goodness!!!! what's with the personal attacks on Chimamanda Adichie? This writer just needs to chill.I agree. I watched it and rewatched it because it was really good. Even Beyonce had to use it in her album. |
of course not. Is 'human rights' also un-African? |
BedLam: Lol.....I want to see how they calculate the equivalent of 100,000 naira with a calculator.haha they probably need a computer for that. |
countries go broke because of low production. money is just paper. you can't eat it, you can't use it to clothe yourself. etc ex. Mugabe kicked out the white farmers in Zimbabwe hence agricultural and livestock output went down and food became scarce. Mugabe thought he could solve the problem by printing more money. Think about ancient barter system. How do those societies go broke. probably because of famine or drought or wars etc resource depletion. Money is just paper meant to represent production of valuable resources. Banks and economists have to regulate it so that the currency is a proper reflection of production rates. otherwise, there will be inflation or in the opposite case, deflation. |
there aren't many nairaland users in the USA or they just don't want to post here? |
I heard of the color 'chartreuse' for the first time yesterday. Most of these are really just a mix of shades of colors we already know about. |
each marriage is different and it all depends on the individual couple's needs. |
This is an inspiring topic. nice one\ |
there is a saying that we should: learn from the past live in the present believe in the future. |
A really good book based on a true story about Ebola outbreak in the 80s. Now that we have an outbreak in 2014, I remembered this book and found it online. Everyone should read it. It is very chilling and full of suspense. I remember feeling a sense of fear and horror after reading the book over 10yrs ago. Warning: it is very gory in some parts. There is a lot of detail about the symptoms, source, spread, etc. It is very informative and scientific. Everyone should read it to become aware and informed. The Hotzone by Richard Preston Here is the link to read the book online: http://learn.flvs.net/educator/common/EnglishIIv10/TheHotZone.pdf Here is the link to the reviews on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/The-Hot-Zone-Terrifying-Story/dp/0385479565 Everyone is welcome to contribute and provide updates on the outbreak |
this should be on the front page |

I wouldn't do it but..it looks cool on some people. |
it is a shame that it has come to this. Both sides need leaders that will agree to work peacefully toward a 2 state solution. |
ridiculous. |
^ridiculous. then he should create a topic with the title "when armed robbery is his fault" ihedinobi2, this is your work? now it all makes sense. https://www.nairaland.com/1796883/christian-chatbox-dressing-women-discussion |
women who cover up modestly have also been victims of r.ape. 92 yr old wrinkly old women have been victims of r.ape. Even innocent girls who are not even old enough to have their periods have been victims of r.ape. so what's your point? |
all victims of crime "attracted" the criminal one way or another. have you ever been a victim of armed robbery? |
R.ape is a weapon of oppression. This is what happens to women who are raised to believe that r.ape is their fault. they disappear. their freedom is stripped from them. they live in a state of perpetual bondage. When a woman is r.aped in a society like this, she remains silent and cannot speak out because she will be punished or stoned for "adultery." A woman cannot dress freely, she cannot walk freely, she cannot use color. how is she not being stripped of her freedom, dignity and human rights? R.ape is nothing short of being a weapon of oppression. |
this topic is disgusting. ihedinobi, I hate to say this but your posts are very repulsive. There is no excuse for rap.e. |

there are many different kinds of women out there. I say marry the one that suits you. if it is a village woman that attracts you, marry a village woman. If you prefer a city or modern woman, marry a modern woman. if you want an illiterate, marry one. if you want an educated wife, they are also available. what's so complicated about this? |
The expression is not meant to be taken 100% literally. It's mostly for empowerment and confidence building. |
Instead of approaching her with pick-up lines, maybe try approaching her as a friend or brother. |
obongproff: I dont know about u, but to me school is boring. School reminds me of d tins we had to do even doe we didn't enjoy it, like going to working everyday. And if marriage is like going to school for life, den dat makes it boring for life.so in other words, anything that requires maturity and responsibility is boring to you? |
I wouldn't call Nigeria useless because where there is God,there is hope. But your stories are on point. Nigeria has a long ways to go. Pay no mind to the people who are criticizing you or calling you unpatriotic because like you said, "you need to be away from Nigeria to see it." |
aisha2: I wonder about this always. The "Real African Woman" Picture or " Sweet Mother" is usually one who is carrying plenty fire wood and backing a child with and carrying another belle. Put up a picture like that you would see comments of "awwww, wow, sweet mother, God bless her" God forbid that the picture of a woman be one who is accomplished, smiling and enjoying a spa day, a lot of people would have a heart attack and comments like " Lazy Fake modern day women" forget the fact that she may earn a million a day, employ thousands of people, have a successful respectful marriage and raise kick ar-se kids, as long as she is not pictured suffering she is not a "sweet mother" Stillfire: Obviously living up to the song; This is so illuminating. |
I pity the children involved in this. |
To me, it is prosperity that leads to individualism because communality rises out of a necessity to share and depend on one another. |
