Politics › Nigeria’s Population Moves To 390m In 2050 As Africa Population Gets To 3.6 Bn by Relax101(op): 10:15pm On Oct 26, 2011
United Nations – Africa’s population is expected to rise from the current 1 billion people to 3.6 billion by 2100, a report released on Wednesday by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) says.

The report, which relied on recent estimates by UN Population Division, states that Nigeria’s population will increase from 390 million in 2050 to 730 million by 2100.

Nigeria will be the third most populous country in the world by 2100, up from its current seventh position.

The report predicts a global population of 9.3 billion in 2050, an increase over earlier figures, and more than 10 billion people by the end of this century.

Much of this increase is expected to come from high fertility countries, which comprises 39 in Africa, nine in Asia, six in Oceania and four in Latin America, the report says.

“The State of the World Population 2011’’ UNFPA report was published ahead of Oct. 31, which the UN says will mark the birth of the seventh billionth human being into the world.

The UN Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that seven countries – China, India, U.S, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan and Nigeria,– accounts for half of world current seven billion population.

The 126-page UNFPA report notes that Africa’s population which is growing by 2.3 per cent a year, is more than double of Asia’s one per cent.

Asia remains the most populous major area in the world in the 21st century.

The report warns that demographic pressure posed mighty challenges for easing poverty and conserving the environment.

“This report makes the case that with planning and right investments in people now… our world of 7 billion and beyond can have thriving, sustainable cities, productive labour forces … and youth populations that contribute to the well being of economies and societies,’’ it says.

The report highlighted the challenges and opportunities individuals would confront- in trying to “build better lives for themselves, their families, communities and nations.’’

People in nine countries were profiled including: Nigeria, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Finland, India, Mexico, Mozambique and the former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia.

UNFPA’s executive director and Nigeria’s former health minister Babatunde Osotimehin said: “Our record population can be viewed in many ways as a success for humanity — people are living longer, healthier lives.

“How did we become so many? How large a number can our Earth sustain? These are important questions, but perhaps not the right ones for our times.

“When we look only at the big number, we risk being overwhelmed and losing sight of new opportunities to make life better for everyone in the future,” Osotimehin said. (NAN)

Family › Woman Seeks End To Marriage With `ill-tempered Husband by Relax101(op): 10:08pm On Oct 26, 2011
Abuja – A 43-year-old lady, Mrs Mercy Nzegwu, on Tuesday prayed the Garki Customary Court in Abuja, to dissolve her marriage with one Dennis Nzegwu.

The petitioner who works with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said the marriage was contracted under native laws and customs.

She said that the marriage was blessed with four children and wished to take custody of the last two children.

The petitioner told the court that her 53-year-old husband who used to work with the National Museum, resigned in 1996, after which the responsibility to cater for the family fell on her.

Mercy said she discovered after the marriage that the husband was an“ ill-tempered and a violent person,’’ who always abused her in the presence of their children.

She said she left her home to stay with a friend because of the constant harassment by her husband.

The petitioner sought the court’s intervention to eject the husband from her official residence at 170, Block D22, CBN I&J Quarters, Garki 2.

She said she deserved to occupy her apartment to enable her go to work as well as take care of the children.

The petitioner’s counsel, Nkechi Udoh, urged the court to grant the prayers as the client’s affidavit was unchallenged.

The respondent’s counsel, Mrs G.O.Olaniyan, who initially opposed moving of the motion, asked for an adjournment to enable her reply.

Presiding Judge, Mr Suleiman Ismaila adjourned the case to Nov. 2 for further hearing. (NAN)

Politics › Lol.oga Tinubu Refuses To Enter Dock! Try Me In Lagos State, He Insists! by Relax101(op): 10:05pm On Oct 26, 2011
By Ikechukwu Nnochiri

ABUJA -The embattled former Governor of Lagos state and leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Wednesday, declined to either mount the dock or enter his plea to the 3-count criminal charge that was preferred against him before the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, sitting in Abuja.

The ex-governor who was charged to court by the federal government on allegation that he violated section 7 of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, Cap C15 LFN, 2004, as amended, by operating 10 foreign accounts whilst he was in office between 1999 and 2007, Wednesday, insisted that “the CCT sitting in Abuja does not have the territorial jurisdiction”, to try him over the alleged offence.

Politics › Reps To Investigate Seizure Of Nigerian Children From Parents By British Police! by Relax101(op): 10:02pm On Oct 26, 2011
BY BEN AGANDE

ABUJA – The House of Representatives yesterday mandated its Committees on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Matters to investigate the circumstances leading to the decision of the British police to take custody of six children of a Nigerian family on the allegation that the mother of the children was a sex worker.

In a motion sponsored by Chairman of the House Committee on Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa and 27 others, the House was informed that the Haringey British police “stormed the peaceful home of the Musas and forcefully took custody of their five children to an undisclosed destination, without any concrete evidence against them.”

Dabiri-Erewa said: “This family has been subjected to the worst psychological crisis, and are currently in a state of mental trauma from the way their case has been handled by the British police and since June 2010 till date, Mr and Mrs Musa have not had contact with their children, even after series of tests conducted on the children confirmed the paternity of the six children in favour of Mr and Mrs Musa.”

Micheal Opeyemi (A.C.N Ekiti State) in his contribution, noted that it was time for the parliament to demonstrate that it really represented the people and that it had the capacity to ensure that Nigerians all over the world were protected without prejudice to the laws of the land where they reside.

He said: “The fundamental issue here is the issue of child abuse, the British government should not trample on the rights of the Nigerians living in the United Kingdom.”

Crime › Assault On Female Students Of St. Annes Secondary School Molete Ibadan. by Relax101(op): 10:01pm On Oct 26, 2011
Men forced their way into the hostels of St. Annes Secondary School, Molete, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday night and raped four female students to coma. Three of the students are in senior secondary school, SSS, while the fourth one is in the junior secondary school, JSS.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when the miscreants scaled the fence of the girls school while the students were fast asleep. They descended on their victims unmolested.

Daily Champion gathered that the rapists who were fully armed with dangerous weapons such as cutlasses, iron bars and charms, gained entry into the hostels through the back fence, thus beating the guards on duty.

They were said to have assaulted the head teacher, while most of the girls in the hostels were similarly beaten before being raped.

Our source said that the security guard at the main gate was unaware of the incident as the rapists prevented the girls from raising alarm, by scaring them with the dangerous weapons. The rapists later fled the scene, after which the head teacher took the girls to a nearby hospital. St. Annes School, Molete harbours five schools with a principal each.

One of the principals, who spoke under anonymity, said that this is not the first time miscreants will be coming to rape school girls in Molete area in Ibadan.
"This is a kind of thing that has been happening in the school which was not revealed to the public. In fact, similar thing happened only two months ago," she said.

According him, efforts by the school’s authorities to beef up security at the school had not yielded positive result as hoodlums kept coming to the hostels to rape the girls.

Meanwhile, the assaulted girls are being treated at a hospital in Ibadan (names withheld), while the hospital management promised to conduct series of tests on them.

A doctor in charge of the hospital confirmed that four students were brought in with severe injuries while 2 were in a near coma. He however stated that they had been responding to treatment.

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Bashiru Azeez, reacting to the incident, directed that security be beefed up at the school, while he urged the Police area commander to "fish out the rapists at all costs."

Celebrities › Baba Suwe Is Using High Level Black Magic On Us" - Ndlea Officials! by Relax101(op): 3:35am On Oct 26, 2011
CONTROVERSY continues to trail the arrest of popular home video actor precipitate comedian, Babatunde Nurudeen Omidina, popularly called Baba Suwe.

Though, the anti-drug scanning machine at the airport which screened Baba Suwe detected some drugs hidden in his stomach leading to his arrest and eventual detention by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The popular comedian has excreted three times but no traces of hard drugs were found in his excreta on the three occasions. This led to outcries from members of the public especially Baba Suwe’s colleagues in the Yoruba genre of Nollywood calling for the release of the comedian. His lawyers have even slammed a N100 million suit on the anti-drug agency.

However, the controversy deepens last Friday when a Lagos High Court gave the NDLEA authority to hold on to the comedian for 15 more days. This was sequel to the new discovery by a CT scan conducted on the actor which revealed that indeed there are drugs logged his body.

The raging controversy has been whether it is true that the actor has some drugs in his body. Many are of the belief that if indeed Baba Suwe has drugs in his body, he could have health problems since he was arrested. “If indeed he has hard drugs in his body, he should have died since,” Sade Oloriebi, an actress stated.

But the NDLEA would not have none of this. According to the anti-drug agency, Baba Suwe’s case is not isolated as there have been similar cases in the past. “In fact we have had cases where the accused raised curses on us after excreting three times but no drugs were discovered on them. However, after CT scans were carried out on them and drugs were discovered, they ate humble pie,” an official of NDLEA said.

Another controversy introduced into the matter now was the issue of juju popularly called Africa Magic. “There was no doubt about it. He was carrying drugs but we know he is powerful spiritually. The drugs may have disappeared through juju. The machine actually detected drugs in his system,” an official of NDLEA at the Airport disclosed.

Another NDLEA official corroborated his colleague’s claim. “Our machine detected it at the Airport, people said we are telling lies that we are just witch hunting him now that the CT scan conducted at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) has confirmed drugs in his body again what will people say? The fact remains that this man is using high level juju on us,” he said.

For those who are bringing in the juju angle, they pointed to the actor’s different postures as the drama unfolds. When he was first arrested, it was discovered that Baba Suwe was a little bit jittery. But as event unfolds, he started regaining his confidence leading to the show of support by his colleagues. He was even reported to have boasted to close friend and colleague, Jide Kosoko that even if he was asked to excrete one thousand times, they would not find anything on him.
